A Personal Witness and A Social Call to Action

Dr. Shepherd is an accomplished meteorologist and a black American raising a family in a country that has not come to terms with our racism. I appreciated the personal details he shares as he speaks to me about what I can do (I am white and living with the benefits of my privilege) to engage systemic racism. It is a short read but describes a long journey that I hope will not falter in the days and years to come.

Reconciliation

The race awakening is a short, kind, handbook for racial reconciliation. Written in a style both personal and earnest, it contains actionable steps for moving forward. I recommend it as an excellent starter text.

The Race Awakening of 2020: A 6-Step Guide for Moving Forward by Dr. Marshall Shepherd

Dr. Shepherd is a friend of mine and a renowned professor and speaker in the atmospheric and climate sciences. I have long appreciated his thoughts on numerous subjects, so I didn’t hesitate to purchase this book. The book chronicles some of Dr. Shepherd’s experiences as a Black man and his thoughts on how we can move forward. It contains a very concise action plan for non-Black people to consider and act upon. If you’ve felt bewildered as to your first steps in anti-racism, or want to see if you’re on the right course, this book is for you. I highly recommend this read for everyone.

The author is a professor of meteorology. He writes from personal experience and observations. Writing style is simple and straightforward, and it’s a very quick read. Good introduction for someone who hasn’t dug into the topic before.

Reading this book with true sub-surface introspection was a true awakening for those of us raised in a microaggression culture and family. The courage to act on what is found is the next step. Dr. Shepherd is truly a light in a dark time in our world. This is a must read.
