Understanding the role of leadership can be difficult. Dee Ann Turner breaks down what it means to be a leader when she writes, "It is the role of the leader to help others discover their paths." This book is a wonderful resource for finding ways to stay focused and to help others or oneself to continue on a journey that invovles successes along the way. Turner describes tips on how to grow a career starting from youth to adulthood and includes helpful questions that get one thinking about the choices they make and the values they keep. Overall, this book is a very insightful read that has me interested in learning more about how to bring out my pontential in my career.

Dee Ann Turner worked at Chick fil-A for thirty-three years where she served as a senior leader. In this, her third book following “It’s My Pleasure” and “Bet on Talent”, she provides a road map to navigate your way to finding a job, keeping a job, and growing a career. Beginning with developing your resume and maximizing your online presence, all the way through leading others and thinking about retirement, the author gives valuable advice you would expect to receive from a trusted coach or mentor. She writes that the expertise in the book was born somewhat of successes, but more so in the failures as we learn much more by our mistakes than we do by our successes.
Among the subjects that the book addresses that I found most helpful were our purpose, mission and core values, character formation, how to ace the interview, building solid relationships, growing trust, listening, giving and receiving feedback, preparing for an opportunity, resilience, mentors, responding to change, self-development, growing as an emerging leader and problem solving.
The book includes a helpful “What’s My Story” section with probing questions at the end of each chapter, and a list of helpful resources (books, podcasts, etc.) at the end of the book.
Reading this book was like sitting down for a personal mentoring session with the author in a favorite coffee shop on how to find a calling that is fulfilling and work that will help me reach my personal and professional dreams. I highly recommend this book for those who are looking for a job and growing a career.
Below are ten of my favorite quotes from the book:
• Understanding our calling is critical to finding a career that gives our work life meaning. Without a calling, a job is just work.
• Organizations committed to developing their staff will be the best places to grow a career.
• The first ninety days of any new job are critical. You never get a second chance to make a first impression, and that is exactly what the first ninety days are – a first impression.
• The relationship with your new boss is the most critical element of success in your new job.
• Of all the reasons I have seen people fail in their career, by far the most common is the inability to build positive and productive relationships in the workplace.
• An organization with a lack of trust among its members is often characterized as competitive instead of collaborative. Such conditions are a threat to a healthy future.
• Anyone who wants to keep a job and grow a career will face negative feedback at one time or another. The most successful people understand how to receive it and respond to it in productive ways.
• Resilient people overcome rejection by grounding themselves in an identity deeper than merely a role at work.
• The most important role of a leader is developing more leaders.
• Allowing our identities to be consumed by our professions sets us up for a crisis when the identity is no longer our vocation for whatever reason.

Dee Ann Turner is driven by a desire to reach back and influence the next generation of job seekers with very practical knowledge gained through her successes, failures, and a career in Talent Acquisition for 30 years. In her third book, Crush Your Career, she has written a career guide for life that provides insight and practical advice for every step in a career journey. For me, reading Crush Your Career was like sitting down to listen in on a wise mentor’s conversation with her student. I found myself leaning in for more.
What is amazing to me is that whether someone is just starting out in their job search or has been employed for 25 years, there is meaningful, useful instruction for every stage in Crush Your Career. College students will find help building a resume, researching a company, gliding through an interview, and negotiating a job offer. Those in the early stages of their career will find helpful insight to keeping your job, managing performance, and preparing for the next level of responsibility. There is something for new leaders, or for those thinking about leaving their job for another organization and even for those considering retirement. So many times, as I read, I wished that someone had offered me some of the advice Ms. Turner shares in Crush Your Career.
As a seasoned HR professional, I cannot think of many books I have read that provide the kind of career guidance that Crush Your Career gives for so many across every stage of the career journey. Ms. Turner uses very helpful illustrations and applications drawn from her own personal experience that are instantly relatable and authentic. Her guidance is invaluable. I especially loved the 5 Principles of Resilience: “Resilience is the antidote to rejection” and the 10 steps to becoming a better problem solver—a skill needed to succeed in the workplace today. As a mom, with a son getting a master’s degree and almost ready to graduate, I am thankful for all the wisdom packed in this easy-to-read book. I cannot wait to see how it will impact my son and those like him, who will be entering the job market with far more challenges than I have ever encountered.
Crush Your Career will be my new choice for a graduation gift to family and friends and a resource to give new employees just starting their career and those just stepping into a leadership role. Personally, I know I will use it again and again even as I enter the last five years of my own career.

There are a few go-to books that I have, and this will definitely be one of them. This book is packed full of wisdom as Dee Ann Turner reflects back on her 30 plus years of helping others find their calling and passions. She took me on a journey of embarking in a career journey to pursue the work I was meant to do. While I am not in the midst of a job search personally, I come alongside others who are trying to discern their next steps and also have two college age children who will soon be entering into the workforce. I resonated with Dee Ann’s statement that “we learn much more by our mistakes than we do by our successes” and found her to be vulnerable with her own mistakes which caused me to reflect back on my own life. This book also gave me clarity on the importance of having a personal purpose which informs every decision I make in life and how I need to have an intentional plan to keep me on track with where I want to go. In addition to these concepts, I wrote down many others that I will contemplate for years to come.

I enjoyed the author's use of research from other sources as well as industry professionals. Being able to see that research helped me get a better understanding of how to build my career in the future. Being a younger person who is still searching for their calling and purpose, Dee Ann did a really great job of reassuring me that it is okay to not know what to do as well as steps to take to hep find the calling on our lives. I was amazed to how I was unaware of so many things in related to careers and how to build a steady career before reading this book. Dee Ann was able to answer questions I did not even know I had. I will be able to apply many of these tips and knowledge gained from Dee Ann to help me grow and progress through whatever career I am led to.

This book is an extremely useful guide that will walk you through the really overwhelming quest of pursuing the career of your dreams. It is so hard to know how to translate passion into practice (especially practice that you get paid for!), and Dee Ann has countless suggestions to help materialize this goal. I really enjoyed the focus on personal character and values all throughout the book. I have highlighted sentences in each and every part of this book, noting tips and tricks that I need now as well as suggestions that I imagine I’ll come back to as I mentor others in the future. The way that Dee Ann ends each chapter challenging readers to consider questions about their own life helps the content soak in at a personal level as it takes root in a practical and attainable way. All in all, I had an overwhelming feeling of hope as I worked through this book. I will definitely be recommending this read to many others who are on a journey to crush their career!

I will use all of the tips in this book. Each one of them targeted a different aspect of the career searching process, which was great! I can’t recall when I ever read a self-help book that answered all my questions about the topic and it has been so thorough! I wonder how I could have missed all the pertinent knowledge that is contained in this book!
Crush Your Career fulfills its goal to teach us how to grow into a role of good leadership. I had so many “aha moments” that I was compelled to read on and not put the book down. One of the more helpful chapters explains how important it is to adjust to a new job position within the first three months. Step-by-step directions focus on the importance of knowing the culture of the new company and to be sure it’s the right fit. If so, all the better!
I encourage new graduates looking for a career and even established employees looking for a fresh outlook, to read and learn priceless advice from this expertly written manual.
Interesting personal anecdotes, which will hit home more often than not, are included throughout. I enjoyed reading and learning that leadership skills are best employed when shared with others and that strong relationships are vital to growing a career.

This is everything I could want! Crush Your Career is golden! To be able to read a book filled with pertinent knowledge and information that I would never have had the opportunity to know otherwise, is why I am going to crush MY career. Dee Ann Turner applies her years of wisdom into one singular book I can continue to reference as I begin my career. This book is not just for younger adults fresh out of college but can be utilized by anyone! I enjoy how Dee Ann uses her personal stories and experience to apply the material she is teaching so that the reader can better understand. Dee Ann added a feature into this book that I have never seen before. She actually challenges the reader at the end of each chapter to reflect on themselves. As a current college student looking for internships and entry position jobs, this book provided me with excellent information that will set me apart from my fellow peers. From cover to cover, I feel like this book that the reader should fully digest and may even read a couple times to not forget any information. I enjoyed everything this book had to offer and I am excited to apply the information in this book as I begin my career.

Dee Ann Turner has done it again! Her third book has just been published and it’s a great read. CRUSH YOUR CAREER – Ace the interview, land the job, and launch your future. Dee Ann’s first two books, including a personal favorite of mine – Betting on Talent, were focused on your responsibility as a leader. If you lead people, it’s your job to hire well, intentionally development and then, bet on your talent to do the job.
In this new book – CRUSH YOUR CAREER, Dee Ann’s reminds us, encourages us, and teaches us to manage our own personal talent. She expects that as we lean into our character and our natural gifts, and as we commit to doing the work, we will discover CAVU (ceiling and visibility unlimited)!
The book takes us (using stories and clarifying questions) through understanding our core values, defining our competencies, managing search, getting hired, keeping the job, building relationships, and managing our own performance. And then she moves on to working through the land mines that occur in every job, committing to our own on-going development, and course, leading. Finally, she reminds us that most jobs are not forever, and suggests how to evaluate the need for change and preparing to do so.
I bought several books for the grown children of my friends. And I recommended the book to my students at the University. But as I read along, I realized it was a good book for me as well. It reminds me that although I know what my gifts are, new clients always make the work new. Her instruction reminds me that I, too, am continuing to define my competencies, getting hired for a new assignment or a new client, and managing by own development and performance.
Dee Ann is woman grounded in faith. Writing is her calling. It’s a core way for her to help others succeed. We all know, a job is not your life. But as Dee Ann says, “our professions are the vocational fulfillment of our calling.” If we belief that – and I vigorously do believe that -- we should bring our best selves to that work. Dee Ann makes it much easier to be excellent in finding our path and successfully launching our future.
If you, or a family member or a friend is seeking career advice and encouragement, I hope you will buy this book.

Dee Ann does a fantastic job describing the various phases of career development - from entering the workforce to growing and developing in a specific field while considering the many changes that can take place along the way (job transitions, etc.). Not only does Dee Ann describe these phases well, she also provides practical tips in each area as well as questions to ask while assessing the next move.
The content in this book is helpful for students looking for a first-time job as well as the many items that should be considered before entering a specific career/field. It is also critical content for those mid-career and/or those who may be considering whether a change inside or outside the organization is necessary/desired.

When I started to read this book, I wasn't sure it was going to be relevant to my life. I am 58 years old, after all. But as I read Dee Ann Turner's words, I realized it was very relevant to my life as I look at semi-retirement and a writing and speaking future. Her wisdom about purpose, mission, goals, jobs, and getting to a place one wants to be in a career was very well explained and helpful for, not only high school students, but also retirees. I enjoyed the book so much, I passed it on to my 30-year-old son who I know will get as much out of it as I did.

I was amazed at the amount of info packed into this book and now that I know it’s the author’s 30+ years of experience and knowledge packed into the pages, I’ll be recommending this book for a long time. I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to take the small amount of time necessary to read this and save themselves years of learning the hard way or stumbling along down their career path - it is an excellent resource and would’ve been great to have had when I started my own career 20+ years ago.

Excellent book.
I didn't even have yo read every word of every sentence because of the author's clarity.
From start to finish, it is logically arranged, though that means, wherever you are in your career, you can benefit from visiting the chapters based on your priorities.
I wish I had read this book earlier on, say 5 years ago. However, I did learn most of these lessons on the job, and as such, the book confirms what I have been experiencing.
Highly recommended to those who are newbies to the corporate world like myself.

4.0/5.0 - An excellent little (208 pages) book of valuable advice, no matter where you are in your career, thinking about, beginning, advancing, or retiring. The advice is based around character and leadership skills, finding your mission in life, and giving your all. While there isn't anything new, the way it is packaged and the progression from beginning to end makes it worth your time to read this book.

This book was the first book that I read by De Ann Turner and it was such an amazing book. As a twenty-year old in college, this book was so inspiring to read as I prepare for my future career in Nursing. She included topics on how to excel in your job and how to stick out from others. She included real life stories that I enjoyed because I got to see that topic in a real world setting. It was a very inspiring book and it showed me how I can be a great employee in my future workforce. I would highly recommend this book and hope that others can grow in areas that De Ann Turner focused on throughout this book.
