Did you know that the oldest mattress was found in South Africa and is 77,000 years old? Vivid illustrations by Vicky Woodgate bring the topic to life.
As well as humans, learn about the sleeping habits of other animals, from bears hibernating to how bats sleep upside down. Even plants sleep! Finally, learn how you can get a proper night's sleep with practical tips and ideas for meditation to calm your mind before bedtime. This book is ideal for children who have difficulty getting to sleep, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about how our brains and bodies work.
I was drawn to this book, because it featured a sleeping cat on its cover. Mimi the cat is the sleep expert who guides us throughout this fun and informative illustrated book. Everyone knows that sleep is important for our bodies and our health. We should be getting an average of five to six 90-minute cycles of deep sleep and REM (Rapid Eye Movement). Sleep produces Melatonin, stores memories, grows and repairs bones and tissues, boosts our immunity, and leads to dreams. For years, I have not slept enough as I typically average five to six hours nightly. Lately I have been sleeping more. Is it the book? The time change? My body saying enough?
How do you sleep? In the position of a soldier, star fish, log, yearner, fetal, or free fall? As I sleep on my side, I am between a log and a yearner. Genetics usually govern whether you are an early bird, a night owl, or in between and you unlikely will change. Hummingbirds are a mixture of both and can switch between sleeping patterns.
I rarely dream. However, 95% of our dreams are forgotten by the time we are out of bed. The average person dreams three to six times nightly from five to 20 minutes. 12% of the population dream in black and white, others usually in “soft pastels.” Left handed souls have more fantastical and lucid dreams than their right handed counterparts. While typically we dream about our experiences, many dream of “being chased, falling, feeling froze on the spot, and flying.” Larry Page created Google from a dream. Animals dream. Nightmares can be triggered from “stress, fear, anxiety, and sadness.” Nightmare originated from Mara or Mare, an evil Germanic folklore spirit, who sat on your chest turning your dreams into nightmares.
These are just a few of the many topics briefly addressed. A few intriguing facts: 2,000 guests attended the biggest pajamas party. You can’t sneeze when you sleep. 15% of people sleep walk. 71% of us sleep with our pets in the United States. 30% of children globally say they have trouble sleeping. Sea otters often hold hands sleeping on their backs. Australian Zebra Finches sing while dreaming. Giraffes sleep an average of 30 minutes daily “in five minute bursts.” Bats sleep 20 hours daily. All scorpions glow under ultra-violet lights.
Yawning is contagious. Did you yawn reading this? I did.
How can you sleep better? Read the book. P.S. Meditation, a good stretch, a hot bath before bed, establishing routines, breathing in lavender, rose, valerian, and vanilla to relax, banning gadgets and phones from the bedroom, sleeping at 64 degrees Fahrenheit or 18 degrees Celsius, and a bedtime story help.
A great book on sleep, with fun facts, stories, famous figures, quizzes, and so much more. A great look into sleep and how it not only works but how it’s a part of history and different cultures. A great read for kids or just anyone interested in learning more about sleep! Plus the artwork is absolutely amazing!
*Thanks Netgalley and DK for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
Darling art (that cover!) and wacky factoids make this a perfect guide for kids who can’t sleep. Or anyone wanting to know more about human, creature, and even plant slumber. Learn about sleep habits and positions; dreams and nightmares; how bats, bears, owls, and larks snooze; plus crazy sleep facts you’ll never forget. Geared to children 7-9 and adults of any age! Don’t mind me, I’m off to count sheep. Zzzzzz.

Thanks to the author, DK, and NetGalley for the review copy. Opinions are mine.
First of all I'm going to announce that this book is my new lover. The next thing is, if you can't sleep well or if you're a night owl, this is for you! You'll learn how to breathe to calm your mind before bedtime. Did you ever hear about the Flower breathing or Bunny breathing? well i don't!
I loved this fun and informative book. It covers the science and history of sleep, as well as some random facts. The illustrations are colorful and engaging. People of any age will find some new bit of trivia in it. Recommended for all!

This is best book for showing the differences in sleep habits. This would be a good classroom library book for someone who has a hard time falling asleep to read. This book goes through as a cat, in the different kinds of beds to even what exactly what happens to your body when you fall asleep. This book had so much information that I thought I knew, but I really didn't!! How animals sleep, to what nighttime workers do. The illustrations are wonderful and allow you to see what happens when you sleep and when you can't.
This has to be the best children’s book in sleep I’ve ever read. Very informative with detailed pictures, charts, and diagrams. Great for Science classes in elementary and middle grades.

Vicky Woodgate zeichnet seit ihrer Kindheit!
So macht Wissensvermittlung Spaß.
The Magic of Sleep: A Fascinating Guide to the World of Slumber by Vicky Woodgate is currently scheduled for release on March 2 2021. We spend about 26 years of our lives sleeping, but how much do you really know about what happens when your head hits the pillow? This book answers all your questions about what goes on in your head when you snooze, including the difference between light and deep sleep, where dreams come from, and how essential sleep is to staying healthy. The Magic of Sleep is a well written, illustrated, and organized book about sleep for young readers. I thought the chosen information was well phrased. It made the information interesting and engaging while not crossing the line into being condescending. I thought the illustrations did a good job of demonstrating the facts while keeping or increasing the interest of the reader. I will admit that I recently listed to an audiobook on the same topic, for the same age group. They started of very similar, and shared many of the same facts, so it was hard for me to separate the two in my mind. However, since both covered the topic so well, and with such a high interest level, being compared did nothing to decrease my enjoyment of either. I enjoyed that the time was taken to include a glossary and index, to allow for a closer reading and understanding for interested readers.
This book focuses on cats and provides an easy-to-understand explanation of what sleep is. Sleep is essential for health, beauty, and life.
In recent years, due to the stress of society, some people suffer from insomnia and have difficulty falling asleep.
By reading this book, you will be introduced to tips that will help you sleep naturally.
Release stress from the day by doing hobbies and things you like, get some exercise, get in touch with nature, and warm up your body by drinking hot drinks. It's also good to add aroma oil to your bath to help you relax.
It contains useful information such as stepping away from your smartphone or computer screen an hour before bed and resting your eyes in a room with indirect lighting before going to bed.
Important Line:
Left-handed If you are left-handed you are likely to have more fantastical and lucid dreams than right-handed people.
Dreams are influenced by our own experiences, however some dream themes are common with many, including being chased, falling, feeling frozen on the spot, and flying.
Dreaming can help you learn and develop long-term memories. 95% of our dreams are forgotten by the time we get out of bed.
We dream about 3 to 6 times a night, ranging from 5 to 20 minutes for each dream. That means we could dream an average of 6 years in a lifetime.
I really like this comprehensive and attractively illustrated book on sleep. It is geared towards kids and includes a lot of information. Just some of the topics briefly covered include sleeping positions, larks & owls, stage of sleep, dreams, nightmares, beds through time, the night sky, sleep in numbers, tips for better sleep and more. Plus, a cute kitten guides readers through the pages. Each section is short and this book can be read in order or flipped through.
Help a child you know to sleep better by sharing this title.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.

The illustrations are so cute it makes reading the content easier and more fun that even children would be engrossed reading and getting something out of this book!
Sleep was explained for humans, animals, and even plants! At the end of the book, the author also provided illustrated tips on how we can sleep better whether that's through stretching, mindful breathing, or adding plants or particular scents in our room. :)
I also very much loved that they used Mimi the cat as their model to explain concepts. :)
gr3-6 Oh my goodness, this is such a fun book. So creatively shared - through a sleep guide in the form of a cat. Who better to share everything about sleep? The same person wrote and illustrated it, so there is a lovely interplay between the two, with lots of fun facts and puns. Did I mention puns?
The Magic of Sleep may be a children's book but I believe it is for all ages. I learned so many things I didn't know and imagined the possible discussions it would provide for families having sleep difficulties. A delightful read for young and old!
We take a tour on the history of sleeping with cutest expert, a cat! We learned about how people use to sleep, what they slept on, mythlogoy of sleep, and more!
This book is fun, packed with informative facts about sleeping. The illustrations are adorable. Hence it's easy to read. Aaaand I read it in one sitting.
