This short read is divided into two parts. Part 1 consists of lessons from mythology, which include Pandora’s Box, Icarus, Athena and Arachne, the Monkey’s Paw, and Hercules. Part 2 somewhat superficially uses life lessons from, among others, Viktor Frankl, James Tyson, Thomas Edison, and Ben Franklin. Imo there isn’t much here about self-discipline, aside from the author’s initial admonition that such is the crucial ingredient to success; without discipline, talent and luck are meaningless. Notwithstanding the book title, the lessons from mythology are more about moderation and resisting hubris (e.g., Icarus flying too close to the sun) whereas the lessons from great men are more about having a growth mindset and grit.

While not as concise and effectively structured as Philosophies of Self-discipline, Legendary Self-discipline contains enough helpful information to warrant a read. I did not benefit from the one-off stories nearly as much in this book, but they provided an avenue to explain the principle of each chapter.
