IMAGINE SEEING THINGS OTHERS DON'T SEE, REAL THINGS THAT ARE FAR AWAYWhen Tessa's visions begin to haunt her, nobody believes her. After all, she's a young girl, and, clearly, her imagination is running wild. So why is the government so keen on taking her away from her family and paying for her education?

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FORTessa's remote viewing gift is an asset for the government, but her daily work is tedious. When she is asked to participate in what looks like an exciting mission, Tessa doesn't hesitate. But if she's such a critical asset to the service, why is her life in danger? And who can she trust when things get out of control? Tessa soon learns that she's both a pawn and a player in a cat-and-mouse game that will change her life forever.

Friendly If you are a prude, don't read this book; it is lighthearted fiction meant to entertain broad-minded readers, not a platform for self-righteous indignation.

Let me treat you to the part when the author, a middle-aged man, describes the shape, texture, colour, and size of an underaged girl's breasts in the very first paragraph:
"We were both naked, and my milky-white, slim body, with silky skin, was pressed against his back. making my breasts look really big. Problem was, my skin is golden-honey, not pale, and my bra size is 32A."

What the fuck is the point in describing the appearance of two pairs of breasts (one pair belonging to a child) within the first five seconds of the book, if at all? It contributes literally nothing to the story.
This hyper-sexualization of a minor continues throughout the entire book. Tessa has sex with multiple adults (statutory rape) throughout the book and it's all described as being "just fine" because she enjoys sex.
This book is rife with pedophilia, sexual assault, fetishization of lesbian relationships, and overall misogyny.
Here's a part where the author excuses sexual assault: (Context: Tessa's body is unconscious but she's possessing someone else and watching from their eyes.
"He was gentle, but I noted that he was enjoying manhandling me a bit too much, placing his hands where they were not really needed for the job, but I didn't hold that against him. Some men can't resist the temptation."

Plot? Characters? Writing style? Who gives a fuck. All I'm writing this review for is to warn you of the awful things in this book the author (and apparently the publishers) find acceptable to market to (mostly) underage girls.

First published on my blog: A Colloquy on Books

When the author of this book contacted me and asked if I would be willing to review this book, I was excited. Once I read the blurb of the book, I was even more excited because this kind of sci-fi story is right up my alley. It sounded like Breaking Sky but with mind-reading which meant that I had to get my hands on it and start reading it as soon as possible. Unfortunately for me, Tessa did not live up to my expectations. There were a few problems that I had with this book and a few things that I really liked about this book. Let's dive right in!

The thing that I really, really liked about this book was the premise. What an amazing idea! Mind-reading but make it science. The thing about this idea that makes it even cooler is the fact that remote-viewing is not fiction. Remote viewing is something that has already been tested out by governments. In fact the author provides quite a bit of information on these programs and how remote viewing could work in the real world. It’s some fascinating stuff. I love reading about secret programs of the military that are trying out new and unheard of stuff and Tessa really caters to that. I liked the idea when I first heard of it but once I read the notes about the real remote viewing program, I was in love. I want there to be more books that explore this sort of mind reading without going into fantasy or magic.

The other thing that I liked about this book was the plot. I don’t think there was ever a moment where I felt like the story was struggling to move forward. There was always something new happening and there wasn’t any stagnation. This book has a lot of action over it’s 160 odd pages, it's an action dense book. Some people may argue that the story went by too fast because it is quite a short book. I’m gonna have to disagree with them because stretching this book out to be longer would have probably turned this book into a series. I have nothing against series but I feel like there are too many sci-fi series and not enough sci-fi books that are stand-alones. I don’t want to always be reading three or four books in order to get a full story arc, sometimes I want to read a single book and be done. This book is an example of a one and done book.

While I love that this book is not a series I would have liked for the book to be bigger in terms of pages. The book as it stands, severely lacks descriptions. It feels more like a really thorough draft of a book rather than an actual book. There are several instances in this book where Tessa says, “I won’t bore you with the details [of x y and z].” However, given that the story doesn’t have a lot of descriptions, I want to be bored with the details. I want to know how it felt for Tessa to practice using equipment that she had never used before. I want to know what tasks she had to perform to see if she was getting used to using that equipment. I want to know what the purpose of the tasks were and how they would help Tessa in the field. I want the details. The narration of the story was a little too matter of fact for my taste. I was being told the story by Tessa but what I wanted was to experience the story with her and due to lack of details and descriptions I couldn’t experience the story.

There were two other things that bothered me about this book, Tessa’s overall demeanor and a couple plot points. While I was reading this book, I became uncomfortable with Tessa’s age and the way that she was acting. As someone who has been seventeen at one point, I don’t think that Tessa’s thought process or the way she acts matches. She feels much older than she actually is. But even if I discount that there is some “romance” in there that I don’t think is age appropriate especially given the differences in the two characters’ ages. On top of that, the way she acted made me dislike her. I don’t want to spoil the specific incidents but I found myself not liking her as a person, however she redeemed herself by owning her behavior and acknowledging it as well as becoming a slightly better person. The other thing that bothered me was that there was a plot hole that I encountered. It was explained and sort of fixed a few chapters down the line but nobody likes a plot hole.

Overall I’d give this book 2 solid stars. As much as I loved the premise of this book and the plot of this book, the lack of descriptiveness and the uncomfortable romance took away from the experience of reading this book. If this book had been tad more descriptive, if I had been able to experience this book and the story within, I would have definitely given it three stars. The thing that makes me sad is the amount of potential that this story had but wasn’t able to reach because it felt like I was being briefed about the story. I’m not going to recommend that you read this book but I’m also not going to recommend that you don’t read this book. If you feel like taking a risk, go for it!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My notes while reading this book (spoilers abound so beware):
-I can not do this. I read the first paragraph and it took me four hours before I could try to continue reading this book.
-Why would any woman think like this, just no.
-It is very obvious that the author of this book doesn’t know how women think.
-Ugh, gonna push through it. I can do it. Just keep reading.
-Why the hell would you mark a door “Top Secret” Okay it at least had some security measures but still.
-This romance came from absolutely nowhere and seems like it isn’t based on anything.
-It’s too fast and too early.
-Plot is good, stuff keeps happening, story is moving forward.
-Not meaty enough for me. Needs more description. I feel like everything is being described to me by a robot or scientist, very matter of fact. I don’t feel the artistry of the writing in the descriptions.
-Plothole: If Tessa got injured when Liv was injured then won’t Tessa die when she takes over Mary’s body and kills her?
-“I won’t bore you with the details” NO! I want the details, tell me what each task was, how it felt to do it.
-The story is being told to me right now but a story like this should be experienced.
-I feel like Tessa is too young for the way that she has been written. Like this much sex with feel goodness at 15 is way too early. It’s making me uncomfortable. If Tessa was older like 20+ I’d feel much better about it.
-I don’t like Tessa, she’s not a good person but at least she owns it.
-Literally acknowledges that Tessa will die if Mary dies but then what’s the point of the mission. -
-This whole two people in one body is reminding me of The Host
-How old is Tom? Do we ever get that? Cause if he is 25 or something, that boy is a pedophile.
-Unnecessary romance take two
-Fast plot.
-Maybe too fast? Needs more description, more meat on the bones.
-Again with the I won’t bore you with the details NO PLEASE I BEG OF YOU. GIVE ME SOME DETAILS.
-“I’m not liberty to disclose.” Really? After everything that you have already disclosed.
-All right, I like where this is going. This does have a bit of chosen on feels to it but I like a good chosen one plot.
-The extra notes about remote viewing are actually very interesting.
-Overall: Great premise and idea could have been an amazing/ really book. Lacked descriptions (meat on the bones) Felt like a was reading a really well thought out draft rather than a book.
TW: Sexual assault, statutory rape, fetishisation of lesbians, paedophilic tendencies
I was provided an earc in exchange of an honest review by netgalley and the publishers - thank you.
Okay, so here we are. I hated this so much. It has so much potential, and very quickly without needing to look it up I knew this was written by a man.
The main character’s breasts are described on page one. Actually, the first paragraph.
Next she openly calls herself sexy a lot which I’ve never met a woman who does. I’m all for self confidence but this isn’t it. Tessa is obnoxious, rude and too self assured. She’s apparently underage but talks and acts like a 28 year old.
Within one and a bit meetings of another female character ( an adult) she initiated sex with them. But don’t worry because the navy woman is straight - except for Tessa. And Tessa is so magnetic this woman all but declares her love for her after one sexual encounter.
Honestly it just gets worse from there. In my notes before I looked up the author I wrote ‘is this a straight man’s lesbian fantasy?’ The answer is clearly yes.
The rest of the story is slow and badly explained and honestly I’m just not here for underage sec with an adult and fetishisation of lesbians.
So, I had some issues.
Firstly is the squick factor of a middle-aged man writing a highly sexualized 17-year-old girl as protagonist and narrator.
Secondly, while the English is fluent, it is not quite completely idiomatic. It certainly doesn't read as the language of an American teenager; it's quite stiff at times.
And then there's Tessa herself: she's manipulative, by her own admission, and though she has some moral awareness and moral qualms, she doesn't seem to find it too difficult to overcome them. I didn't much enjoy following her as a protagonist.
Had the story been anything out of the ordinary - had the premise been a bit more convincing or less dependent on good fortune and the protagonist being Special, had the thriller elements been less matter-of-fact and more exciting, had the secondary characters had more depth to them - it might have made up for the other flaws. Sadly, this wasn't the case; it was all a bit average.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from the Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Tessa by Kfir Luzzatto is a fascinating book on a significant fantasy trope of reading someone else's mind.
What is Tessa's mission that puts almost everything at risk?
Tessa
Tessa is no ordinary seventeen-year-old girl that was raised with her family. Nope, Tessa has been in a secret government agency, and let's just say that agency sucked. Tessa went from one agency to another where she is at right now. Let's just say that it must be hard to grow up with these types of powers and to have to grow up with government agents watching you. Being written in the first person, we see a lot of things through Tessa's mind, and that lends a confident feeling while reading that you are there with the characters even more so than usual. Tessa has a way of bringing forth detail that would take you there immediately in her perspective, but Mr. Luzzatto himself has a great way of making the details stand out himself.
What I like about Tessa is that she is different than any other character that I have read. Tessa acts like a mature seventeen-year-old and is also acting like a mini adult as well.
The Story
Tessa CRThe story has us following Tessa through a series of events that lead her to where she is at right now in her life. Well, as a seventeen-year-old girl that works for the government finding bad guys. Tessa has an exciting way of telling the story, and I won't go into too much detail as it is significant spoilers, but the story is fantastic. It kept me on my toes the entire time.
Four Stars
Tessa by Kfir Luzzatto is an excellent start to a new series by Mr. Luzzatto. Mr. Luzzatto did something different within this book that I never thought would be possible. I love the fact that he did do some research on the subject matter. I also liked that he did this book in a new way for him as his main character isn't a boy. Tessa, the main character, is a great one, and I think that Mr. Luzzatto has an excellent series on his hands. I am giving it four stars and recommending it to anyone that likes fantasy and young adult.
Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Tessa by Kfir Luzzatto.
Until the next time,
Not the best
Is it a good book?.... hmm, average. Is the story compelling ? Parts of it. Are the characters fun?... yes. So is it worth a read? I’d say only if the subject is of interest to you. Otherwise give it a pass. The story has difficulty as it tries to make it serious and dangerous but then has the MC jump in and solve the problem quickly and easily, robbing the scene of tension and suspense. This happens every time any danger happens causing a huge letdown over and over again. This robs the book of any substance and takes it into the boring. The sexual aspect is handled without description which some readers will appreciate, but this also renders it a bit robotic and simple. The fact that so many professional people want to sleep with a 17 year old is in itself strange and the whole ethical questions that such a thing would, or should, cause is ignored and never mentioned (it could have added to the story imo). Anyways, I’ll pass on the second book in the series
Giving any work five stars, regardless of genre or author, is an iffy thing, especially if you are one of those who require a work to be absolutely perfect to be worthy of five out of five. But the reality is that perfection is a truly rare thing. And the easiest thing in the world is to find fault. And yes, if I wanted to I am sure I could find plenty to quibble with in this work, but I chose not to. No. Instead I slapped it with 5 stars, why? Because I bgg enjoyed the bloody dickens out of it, that's why. I enjoyed it more than any book I have read in more years than I care to think about. Yes, I could point out negative things in the book, but by far the biggest negative thing I can and will identify is that the book was just too short! I'm not ready to leave the world and characters of Tessa.
Good book
But, if you want to read any other you must pay. The characters were interesting and I enjoyed them, but something was off about the book and story. Maybe it was that the story was a little wacky. I guess because the main character was only 17 and doing things that would make your head spin and acting in a way that I can't imagine a 17 year old would act. At least in my mind. But, it was fun to read.
Superlative! Riveting and Addictive!
Tessa, as a splendid foray into the roiling implications of telepathic genius is an unparalleled ride into a rich reality you’ll not want to leave. Happily, there’s a sequel! Well-detailed and fully developed characters enrich excellent storytelling. You won’t emerge unchanged…
2.5-3 stars
There were some interesting ideas in this book, but overall I didn't like it. One of the issues for me was the style of the book - it is almost all narration from the main character. Too much telling and not enough showing/doing. Also, I don't like snarky teenage characters, so that was another problem.
Tessa is a fun read. I was engaged early in the book and never put it down until I finished.
Tessa had me interested in the character development, action and plot. The writing was well-paced and kept the flow of the story going smoothly.
I immediately bought the next volume of the series and am deliberately holding off starting it for at least a say.
Unusual and interesting
Lots of fun. Tessa's abilities were developed had a good pace. Then she able to do more than expected very quickly. The change got her into a fix and then was instrumental in helping get out of it. A good start for the series
In my head!!
This storyline is all about how to use your mind powers and Tessa has them all. Besides spying and killing, escaping is very important. With mind reading, Tessa can experience all life has to offer you! Good read!
interesting ESP type of story
Some good use of ESP features in new ways that allowed for murder and mayhem. A nice spy story setting to add some flavour.
It felt a little flat around character development and did not grab your emotions
good sci fi novel
Lusatto writes with a flair that keeps you interested and looking for something next. Tessa is sort of a female, reluctant James Bond and looks to have some interesting adventures to come.
Good
A very good read, certainly a different slant on ESP. Enjoyable storytelling, with laugh out loud sections. I enjoyed the characters. A bit of a slow burn to start but stick with it you will be so pleased you did. I read in one sitting. I recommend.
