Hmmm... Will It Really Live Up to the Promise?

In this book, the author takes you from developing an idea for your book through the writing and publishing process, and finally to marketing both on Amazon and beyond and perhaps creating other opportunities for you to shine as a newly minted authority. The book is divided into three phases—produce, publish, promote—and each of these phases is divided into three steps with multiple things to consider for each step along the way. As an editor myself Hmmm... Will It Really Live Up to the Promise?

In this book, the author takes you from developing an idea for your book through the writing and publishing process, and finally to marketing both on Amazon and beyond and perhaps creating other opportunities for you to shine as a newly minted authority. The book is divided into three phases—produce, publish, promote—and each of these phases is divided into three steps with multiple things to consider for each step along the way. As an editor myself who has helped a number of nonfiction authors bring their books to the wide world, I felt like there were a lot of wisdom nuggets in this book, but I don't know if the sum total would actually be enough to help a total writing newbie who is just contemplating a book be able to not only write it but fully maximize its impact, however you define impact. I have worked with some writers who have taken a course on writing a nonfiction book, but the teacher didn't really focus on the writing aspect, which required me as the editor to essentially teach several of them how to write and rewrite.

I feel like this author does the same thing here. He doesn't really help with the actual writing aspect (which is crucial, because if you don’t have a book—and preferably a good one—the rest of it won’t matter) much beyond the discussion of how to break writer's block and write introductions and endings. In my experience, writers need more direction to truly put out a good book. They need to deeply understand themselves, their idea, and what they hope their future reader will take away or gain. This needs to be taken down from the theoretical or general to the practical, which I don't think was accomplished here. How can you take what you know or what you want to share and write in a logical, flowing, friendly, and conversational manner that will take with the reader from lack of knowledge or insight to what you want them to get out of it? I don't think the author adequately addressed how to organize the first draft or how to truly properly edit for content; both of these are initial writing stumbling blocks beyond the writing itself. When I saw editing for content in the table of contents, I was pleased; most books on authorship don’t address this at all or adequately. But in the actual chapter itself, the author just literally gave an outline without much substance. In my experience, would-be first-time nonfiction writers need more writing or editing direction than a bare outline to be successful.

So while I can't recommend this book as highly as I would have liked to, I do think it has some good insight into the nonfiction writing, publishing, and promoting process. But it doesn't connect all the dots that the rank beginner needs connected. Will it take someone who hasn’t written anything beyond a school paper or business report from book idea to monetization all on its own? Unfortunately, I don’t think so. You will need other resources, whether more books or people, to get you there.
