tl;dr: I think this one is the weakest in the series so far for me. There was really only one strong story, and the rest were mid, and one was just...not good. I think by itself, I would've given 3 stars, but given how amazing the others have been, I'm gonna say 2 stars.

Not tl;dr:

Something I love about this series is how dramatic it is. We, as a species, have always shared folklore with our children to teach them morals and keep them safe, such as, "Don't go into the forest, there are monsters in there." But this series, of course, modernizes the practice with lessons such as, "Don't bully other kids, or you will die a horrible, painful death." xD

Anyway, let's dive into the stories in this volume:

Story #1 脳力サプリメント: Ayumi is attending cram school to help her chances into getting into her dream middle school. Unfortunately, her grades are by far the worst of all the students. Even worse, her best friend is the top of the school, making her feel so ashamed. When she sees an ad in a magazine about a supplement that can make you more intelligent, she decides to give it a shot. After all, what's the worst that could happen? ;)

As usual, I have many guesses as to which way the stories will go, and also as usual, I am always wrong LOL. Ayumi starts to move up classes as she continues to pass more tests, but in her hubris, she ends up making a grave mistake. Genuinely thought it was hilarious when

I have to say I was a little disappointed in the epilogue. The epilogue is where the moral of the story is explained, and while I appreciated the mention of , I feel like there could've been a little more given here than just that, or expand on that a bit more. Ayumi gradually becoming was unexpected but also really funny.

Not my favorite story with this one, honestly, after reading the second story, it was completely forgettable ^^;

Story #2 金のなる木: Akane's friend Julie has everything a girl could ever want--the latest clothes, frequent vacations traveling the world, a large house--you name it! Akane can't help but feel embarrassed by comparison. But after Julie reveals the secret to her family's riches, and that secret finds its way on the balcony of Akane's room, Akane's life too, then drastically changes.

Once again, the twists and turns with this one! I love how these stories keep me guessing. The moral of the story here is an obvious one--don't value money over family, and cherish the little things, not covet wealth. But the change in Akane's character, especially the big blow up scene with her mom, oh man. I did not expect to feel so emotional about this one though, the reveal later with what the mom did had me like ;o; My heart ;o;

I LOVED the ending. I also loved the extended family at the end, and how clear it was they did not give a shit lmao. What assholes xD Easily the best one in this volume.

Story #3 人魚の国: Nana was the most popular, cutest girl in elementary school. But once she entered middle school, suddenly the gossip was all about Yuina. Angry and jealous, Nana couldn't help but always stare at Yuina with envy. One day, when she overhears a rumor about a magical mermaid kingdom in the school's pool, where only the most beautiful can enter, Nana becomes obsessed with proving herself by any means she can to get her invitation.

Okay, not gonna lie, this was sucked. ^^; Absolutely the weakest story I've read so far, like in the entire series. I read it all in one go real quick because I was so bored and wanted to get it over with asap. Even the epilogue was bad?? But good lord, nothing really happens, I don't care about the character's motivations, she's so unlikeable, and not in the interesting ways of other unlikeable protagonists in this book series.

The only interesting part was with her friend, Hazuki, when she confronts Nana. After dealing with all that BS with Nana, Hazuki trying to ground her in reality, was nice contrast with Nana's growing insanity. Which makes Nana's make sense. But also omg Nana is so mean about her friend x'D

But after reading that last story, this one fell waaay short.

Story #4 メリーの食卓: Rika, like many children, is a picky eater, and often struggles to finish her plate, especially if it has any vegetables. Constantly scolded by her teacher and mother, she ends up finding someone--or rather, something--to help her out. Mary, an old doll that sits in her classroom, is rumored to eat anything.

Kids can be picky with what foods they like, and vegetables can be tough. I empathize with Rika, as all the adults in her life are just yelling her without actually helping her. There are ways to work with kids with eating disorders, and yelling at them is not it. @_@

That said, despite toward the end, which I always feel bad for the stories where , the overall ending I think was really neat and well done, and the epilogue was a bit kinder with the picky eating aspect. I don't think the story was bad, it was a good horror and the lesson is important, I just wish it was handled a LITTLE different.

I'm actually kind of disappointed with this one. :( I'll absolutely read more, as I still love the series as a whole, and they can't all be winners, but still...oof.

For Japanese Learners:

As this is a series, my thoughts are the same as volume one, which you can read more about that here.
