This is the best book on comedy writing--and one of the top books on writing--that I've read. Perret's voice is so accessible, his instruction so clear, and his sensible encouragement so profound that I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to add more humor to their writing or is considering a career as a stand-up comedian. Since Perret's background is in television, his advice is spot-on. Though much of the book is a how-to for joke writing, it's extremely useful for writers to help identify what makes a joke worthwhile, placement etc. and to identify those elements in the humor writing of others. An excellent how-to.

This book has a lot of good advice, even if you do not plan to write in the comedy field. I found it especially helpful in my RPG writing. I also realized that I could give myself credit for a lot of things that I did even if I did not publish them or turn them into a fantasy novel.

I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to be a writer.
