Your classic animal says “insert noise here” book... with a twist. Each page consists of an animal saying the wrong noise, a joke/pun about it being wrong and the next page is whatever the proper animal for that noise was followed by a new wrong noise.

My daughter thinks this is absolutely the high point of comedy, so obviously the book has succeeded in winning over its target audience. Personally I find it a cute idea, and while not the greatest of children’s books, it’s amusing enough. Some of

Cow says meow. Cat says neigh. Horse says... Kids will have a blast guess which "wrong" word the animals will say next before they turn the page to find out. The main character, a little boy, gets ever more frustrated with the misbehaving animals, but his funny, punny lines play right into the fun. "I can't bear it!" he says when the horse growls like a bear. I can just imagine the giggles over this one! ...more

Cow Says Meow is exactly the right book for a good giggle. My two year old had a ball telling me "No!" when the animal said a sound that didn't match what she expected, and even she found the word play entertaining. Kirsti Call is masterful at writing a book that is simple enough for the youngest of readers to enjoy, in a way that is fun and entertaining for readers of all ages.

As a writer for young people, there is a lot to learn from this book! Even though it is seemingly simple, there is a y

MEOW-VELOUS! (MOO-velous?) I received an early copy in exchange for an honest review, and honestly? You will read this again, and again, and again, and again, and again. The silly setup, winsome wordplay, and the suspense about which animal the next animal will mimic will keep your kiddo turning pages. The colorful, bold art builds to a climax as the main character gets more and more frustrated with all the animals who say the wrong sounds. UDDERly entertaining!

Kirsti Call has done it again! The author of such classics as Mootilda's Bad Mood has just made storytime more fun than ever. Cow Says Meow is full of delightful puns and divine silliness, not to mention a Noah's Ark of bright, bold, beautiful illustrations. Get ready to read this crazy, mixed-up, amazing picture book again and again — it's about to become one of your child's all-time favorites. ...more

This fun book is sure to have children laughing and shouting out what each animal says, or rather, is supposed to say. The patient little boy narrator proclaims the story an udder disaster when all the animals get mixed up with their unique sounds. Bright pictures will entertain even the youngest of audiences. Great choice for a fast last-minute story time!

This hilarious picture book is a must-have for storytime! Kids will guffaw at the mixed-up animal sounds and the pitch-perfect wordplay. Plus, kids will love to join in and chant along with the animal sounds! Author Kirsti Call delights readers young and old with super silly puns. Such a fun read-aloud!
Wordplay master Kirsti Call has created a book with few words but much humor. Illustrations from Brandon James Scott perfectly complement the minimal text and amp up the humor still further with hilarious animal expressions.
Toddlers will crack up when each animal says the wrong sound, while older kids (and teachers) will appreciate the clever puns from the child in the book ("You're barking up the wrong tree" signifies a dog to come, while "hogwash" tells us a pig will be

Recommends it for: Preschoolers, early elementary kids, elementary teachers and youth librarians.
This book is an absolute hoot. I giggled as soon as I opened the front cover and saw the endpapers—Brandon James Scott's illustrations are hilarious throughout. Kristi Call's text is filled with clever puns and fun wordplay that young readers will absolutely love. I predict this will be one of those books that kids in a story time setting (or on a lap) will join in with the mixed-up animal sounds (and the child-character’s eye rolls), and then say, “Again!” as soon as the story is over. ...more

Cow Says Meow provides an interactive reader experience for young children. We all know that the youngest kids love imitating animal sounds, so why not make them laugh, too? The animal characters are caught in mixed-up onomatopoeia, which by the looks on their faces, is even perplexing to them. Kids will love it when the narrator becomes a bit unhinged and questions who is in charge of the story. Illustrator Brandon James Scott takes a slightly meta perspective on this turn of events, turning th ...more

When we read 'Cow Says Meow' out loud, a special kind of magic happened. My little ones laughed wholeheartedly at the absurdity of mixed-up animal sounds. They tried telling the animals they were making the wrong sounds.

The illustrations are absolutely hilarious and kid-friendly. My daughter especially enjoyed the ‘pig who said hi.’ These animals are definitely confused. The wordplay throughout will make the parents reading along chuckle as well. I definitely recommend this book for rollicking

This bright and beautifully-illustrated picture book will have your youngest reader laughing their little head off with each page turn. My three-year-old and I had a rollicking good time "correcting" each animal uttering the wrong sound, reading the boy's clever and punny response, and then seeing the animal who actually does make that sound looking wide-eyed on the next page. The book captures the young child's attention from start to finish, and also allows for some fun ad lib dialogue between ...more

What an udderly delightful book. So fun and full of puns :-). I enjoyed reading this book front front cover, end papers to back cover and everything in between. Reminiscent of Brown Brown Bear Brown Bear what do you see? Children will find this book irresistible and will request it to be read again and again. Especially being a peep-and-see. In Cow Says Meow, Kirsti Call has created a book kids will adore AND at the same time will teach children what animals "really say" if they don't already know. Having animals say an unexpected sound, is funny, clever, and will grab the reader's interest immediately. A boy narrator's delightful one-liners about each animal are hilarious and lead the story from one animal to the next. The illustrations are lively and colorful and brighten the inside and back cover pages. I whole-heartedly recommen ...more

My kids and I had fun reading this book together. They laughed at the puns and enjoyed trying to guess what each animal would say next. I like how the ending ties the whole story together. Well crafted and clever. I also like how the short phrasing will help build reading skills for young eyes following along.

This crowd pleaser is perfect for preschool or library storytime or a quick fun read at home.

COW SAYS MEOW is a clever approach to animal noises in picture books! An artistic and funny blend of confusion ensues in this silly take on which sounds animals make. This picture book is a playful and creative way to teach the voices of beloved animals while engaging young minds. The illustrations are delightful and the text is simple. A book to read over and over again. My daughter and I love it!
For fans of animals and onomatopoeia, it's a must-read!

This short, silly book will delight kiddos with its menagerie of animals who don't behave in conventional ways. Cow Says Meow empowers little listeners/readers who will be in on the jokes, and it's the kind of book likely to be immediately requested again. It's also a nifty exploration of expectations - things, and people, don't always respond in ways we expect, and there's a lot of pleasure in subverting expectations and trying new things. ...more
