Today, after a very demanding week I curled up in bed with “An Incomplete Love Story” by Zaid Ismail. I needed this break and I needed to read this book. The story follows the life story of the central character from birth to the streets of Lenasia to Cape Town, into adulthood during apartheid and within a rainbow nation. I resonated with this story on too many levels from the emotional to the historical. The story addresses the emotional baggage we carry with us from our upbringing and how our ...more

An impressive memoir from the eyes of an aloof child carrying you through his emotionally detached adulthood. The tale of a man with intense feelings but no staying power. Familiarity is his fear. Comfort zone is aloneness. At times I wanted to embrace him and at other times punch him in the gut. Written boldly, eloquently and with a touch of humour. Any South African Indian man ... actually any man who's never read a book in their life will easily relate to the main character and equally enjoy ...more

The author Zaid Ismail is brutally and unflinchingly honest. You will cry with him, not only because the stories are heartbreaking, but because you see yourself or someone you love in his words. His vivid descriptions of growing up in a dysfunctional family unit and surviving on diminished family love make riveting reading. But the most important message he teaches readers is that it’s okay to be broken. Read An incomplete Love Story or Buy it for a friend. Seriously, you will love this book.

Loved the book. Title was so apt . I generally read non-fiction and it was lovely to read fiction and I actually wanted to finish it. Very well written. It didn’t end quite the way I thought it would which I loved . A definite recommendation for a great read .

I loved that I could relate to parts of the book. It brought back childhood memories growing up in Lenz which I loved. The conformity of certain values that don’t make sense and the psychological implications that carry through adulthood. R

The author encapsulates his emotions ever so vividly on each almost feel as if you are him.
For the reader who is not south african will enjoy this book as it describes these aspects quite aptly and one will easily be transported from your bed unto the beautifully landscaped roads of the cape as he navigates through life a
