Irene comes to understand the danger that comes from becoming a Grand Duchess, especially in the aftermath of a coup and withing the divided Kristen duchy. Still she wishes to repay Noel for all his compassion. They get approval for their wedding, combat their adversaries, and finalize preparations for their ceremony. Noel reveals secrets about how he spends his time and the resources at his disposal. When she tries to claim her right as the Lady, vassals demand she prove her worth. As such the young couple travel to a monster infestation to see if they can solve the problem--both becoming confused about the boundaries of their relationship along the way. * * * * *----------* * * * *----------* * * * * This is a slow burn romance in a fantasy world. Volume two introduces a few new characters and starts to build tension with the main bad guys. Irene is a little passive for my taste, but she remains likable and sweet throughout. The almost psychic connection our couple develops speaks to their growing relationship. No insta-love here. While there are a few scenes that play out differently, I feel like I read a variation of this story before so I can't say that it is the most original project. Still I like the symmetry of showing how his family is remorseful of their actions and suffering with hope of forgiveness against her family which refuses to admit guilt and continues to sow difficulties.
