"Life on the Underground Railroad" by Sally Senzell Isaacs is intended for intermediate readers. It is a non-fiction book that tells the story of slavery in the United States with a special emphasis on the Underground Railroad. The book is part of the "Picture the Past" series that allows children to experience various aspects of American history through beautiful pictures and well-written text.

The book is structured into short and concise sections, each dealing with one aspect of live during that particular period in history. Between the simple, yet informative text, beautiful illustrations, helpful captions, maps, and timelines the reader is provided with a wealth of information presented in a very child-friendly format. The illustrations are especially captivating and include paintings, drawings, and photographs from that particular period in history. The author even includes a simple recipe for Southern Biscuits so that children can taste the biscuits that the slaves ate on their journey to freedom. I am very impressed with style and content of this book and would love to find others from the "Picture the Past" series.
