Blink of an Eye

Rate this book
A #1 New York Times bestselling author and an Edgar Award winner team up to deliver this gripping new novel featuring investigator Kendra Michaels—whose observational skills are worthy of a modern-day Sherlock Holmes.

Delilah Winter is one of the hottest pop stars on the planet, so how in the world was she kidnapped right in the middle of a show at the famous Hollywood Bowl? If anyone can figure it out, it's Dr. Kendra Michaels, who works with local and federal authorities on only the most impossible cases. Blind for the first twenty years of her life until a revolutionary surgical procedure allowed her to regain her sight, Kendra uses her powers of observation—honed during her years in the dark—to detect what other investigators don't. She agrees to lead the race to rescue the young singer before time runs out.

Joined by Jessie Mercado, the singer's former bodyguard and a military hero, Kendra closes in on the hideout location but not before casualties mount up. Desperate for leads, Kendra must set aside her personal feelings when agent-for-hire Adam Lynch also volunteers his special skills to aid in the search.

But as the abductor's true purpose becomes clear, the trio uncover a plot they never could have imagined—leading to a showdown they won't soon forget.

The team of Iris and Roy Johansen has put out another exciting thrill ride full of twists and turns with loads of action and dynamic characters like Kendra Michaels one of my fave johansen characters And bad ass tough as nails Jessie Mercado private eye is back too! When Dee winter is kidnapped at her concert it will take Kendra and Jessie combining forces to save this superstar and with a little help from mercenary and all around get it done guy lynch the bad guys are on the run. I never get tired of this writing team. Johansen and her son Roy know how to write a great storyline and with a steady pace they turn out one hell of a book! Even though this is a Kendra Michaels series book and she does her thing, its about Dee and jessie's friendship and the bond between these two women. I have loved Iris johansen for many years and she is one of my favorite romantic suspense writers of all time! And the addition of Roy has made him a favorite of mine as well. Until next time Luv's💞💋

This story missed opportunities to expand the depth and independence of at least one of the main characters and losing a star for that alone. Thus making this only an average story. 5 of 10 stars

Blink of an Eye is my first read by the mother and son team of Iris and Roy Johansen. Although it is the eighth in the Kendra Michaels series, I had no problem reading it as a standalone.

Kendra Michaels is a gifted and talented investigator whose uncanny power of observation has immersed her in some of the most complex FBI cases. Kendra and her friend Jessie Mercado, a former military hero, are often at the center of crime scene investigations. So when pop star Delilah Winters (Dee) is kidnapped, her good friend and former bodyguard Jessie is at the forefront to apprehend the kidnapper. Both Jessie and Kendra play starring roles that lead to the rescue of Dee and the apprehension of the criminals.

Blink of an Eye is an immersive novel that reads like a movie. I got caught in the moment and felt like I was at a the theater watching the mystery unfold. The suspense will get you and the action will pull you in.

The cast of Kendra, Jessie and Adam Lynch are as dynamic as the story. There is enough banter between them that provides the needed break from all of the suspense.

Inasmuch as I really enjoyed the novel, I was a little disappointed that the mastermind behind the kidnapping wasn’t as elusive as he or she should have been. The mastermind could easily be determined well before the end of the book. If it weren’t for that “flaw,” it would have been a five star read for me.

I received a hard copy of the book from Grand Central Publishing. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

Pet Peeve: I can’t stand when authors write their series more for new readers dropping in than their readers who have been there since book one. This is book eight, which means I have had to read:

“Olivia had been her best friend since they’d both been students at the academy as children. When Kendra had gained her sight, it hadn’t changed anything about the relationship but the fact they’d both gotten stronger and more determined to be their own people.”

EIGHT times along with all the other replays in the book. They are tedious and annoying. We remember who the main characters are and the main dynamics of the series, no need for reminders every single time.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Clunky writing, especially the dialogue. Such melodrama, yet mostly boring, even with exclamation points to make sure you've noticed when someone has shot a gun!!!

This is my maiden voyage into the world of Kendra Michaels. Even though this is the 8th in the series penned by the Johansens, this barn burning thriller adventure can be enjoyed as a stand-alone. The team of Roy and Iris seamlessly weave into the yarn the necessary back story. Kendra is a unique investigator with extensive powers of deduction and observation initially honed by her blindness as a youth and then blossomed with her return of sight by a miraculous new operative procedure. She can assemble the meaning and significance of ‘bread crumb” clues that most people miss. (She perceived the usage of the anesthetic agent propofol by the lingering characteristic smell of the soybean extract vehicle). She has used this remarkable skill set to aid in the investigations of both the FBI and the Justice Department.
Superstar singer and songwriter Delilah Winter is performing in front of eighteen thousand of her fans at the famous L.A. Hollywood Bowl. After finishing her act she walks back stage with the thunderous crowd chanting and cheering for an encore. Nothing happens for several minutes and suddenly the realization hits Kendra that something is wrong. Both Kendra and Jessie Mercado, being close friends with Delilah are attending the concert. Both rush backstage and witness the telltale signs of an abduction. This initiates only the beginning of non-stop action, filled with car chases, bullets flying, rescue attempts from submerged vehicles, and pursuit by motorcyclists armed with Uzis.
Jessie Mercado has forged a deep friendship with Delilah during her stint as director of her security team. Herself a private investigator with credentials forged from her service in Afghanistan . She is a long time friend of both Kendra and Delilah, and cherishes their friendship. Jessie and Kendra team together to aid the FBI and local police in the investigation of the kidnapping, and searching for clues to the identities of the kidnappers and their possible location. Days pass before finally a ransom demand is made. Projected on a twenty foot wall of a mausoleum in the famous Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the message and demands. “They” request twenty million dollars, in unmarked and consequential bills, in exchange for the release of Delilah with instructions to follow the next morning …. “one mistake and she will be gone in the BLINK OF AN EYE.” This is only the beginning, leading to double-crosses, with elaborate and convoluted instructions orchestrated by the crooks behind the kidnapping.
Multi billionaire and social media giant, Noah Calderon steps forward and offers to front the money. He states he has had a previous relationship with Delilah and wants to help and begins to take part in the investigation and planning for the ransom drop.
The Johansens weave a narrative overflowing with intrigue and mounting tension that escalates into multiple twisty and astonishing reveals that culminates into an exciting denouement. The staccato concise type dialogue and pacing results in a propulsive read with the pages flying by. The narrative is peppered with a low key and unobtrusive romantic angle that will not obviate the enjoyment for the male reader. Tangential but necessary is the exploration of the power of the bond of friendship. The bottom line: nothing profound here, just pure simple, unadulterated fun to gobble up like desert.
Thanks to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for providing an Uncorrected Proof in exchange for an honest review. Excuse me, while I go download some of the earlier Kendra Michaels investigations. ( This review was published at Mystery and Suspense Magazine)

This is book 8 in the Kendra Michaels series, but the first book I read! I did not feel lost while reading this one. And after reading this one, I definitely want to read more in the series!! This was a fun cat and mouse chase between investigator Kenda Michaels. She works with the feds and local authorities on the hardest cases because she's just THAT good! When Delilah Winters, one of the world's hottest pop stars is kidnapped right from a show, Kendra's skills are put to the test!

Wow, this was so good and had plenty of twists along the way. I had no clues as to who the kidnapper was. A fast moving, suspenseful book and I totally enjoyed every second! Highly recommend!!

Tight, propulsive, and sinister!

Blink of an Eye is an ominous, charged, pacey thriller that sees FBI consultant Kendra Michaels teaming up with her friend and former security advisor, Jessie Mercado, along with DOJ Special Agent Adam Lynch to investigate and hopefully negotiate the safe return of famous popstar, Deliah Winter after she is ruthlessly kidnapped during a live performance at the Hollywood Bowl.

The writing is meticulous and crisp. The characters are multilayered, talented, and resourceful. And the plot is a compelling web of clues, deduction, lies, obsession, manipulation, violence, and murder.

Overall, Blink of an Eye is another action-packed, suspenseful, fast-paced addition to the Kendra Michaels series by Johansen and Johansen that has just the right amount of mystery, intensity, and intrigue to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish and leave fans of the series more than satisfied.

Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I have read all the books in the Kendra Michaels series but this book can easily be read as a standalone, I think.

Dee is a young superstar who is suddenly kidnapped from a concert. Kendra and her friend Jessie are asked to provide some support to the team who are tasked with finding her. There is the usual suspense that you can expect in a Johansen book and, as usual, I like the sorts of things that Jessie does in the course of fighting off the bad guys. Kendra's powers of observation come to the fore again, out of all the characters that Iris Johansen has developed, she is my favourite, but I think she was underutilised in this particular book. Lynch makes an appearance but he really is on the periphery on this occasion.

This was a good book but not as good as it could have been.

4 stars from me.

I am usually a big fan of the Kendra Michaels series and enjoy hearing how she figures things out about people just using her senses. However, I thought this story was light on plot and story line, and even light on her figuring things out with her senses. It seemed more about the characters patting each other on the back telling them how great they are. Will I read more in the series, for sure, but wasn't a big fan of this one and thought it was slow and boring.

So hard to finish. I’ve enjoyed past books of this author until the last few. There was so much filler in conversations for others who didn’t know the background that there wasn’t much left for the actual story. The dialogue was so awkward and unrealistic. I won’t be reading anymore of this author

When pop star Delilah Winters is kidnapped during her concert, her friends Dr. Kendra Michaels and Jessie Mercado jump into the FBI investigation to rescue her. Soon DOJ Special Agent Adam Lynch joins the team to add his special skills. Together, the trio work with the FBI and the LAPD to solve the case and bring Delilah back safe and sound. Following the kidnappers instructions, Lynch delivers $20 million to a underground location. When the money is scanned, the kidnapper discovers the money bands have an electronic tracking signature. They leave the money and shoot-to-kill Adam. Luckily, Adam escapes, but the danger to Delilah has increased because of the failed ransom drop. Will Kendra, Jessie and Adam rescue Delilah, or will she become a casualty?

This is the eighth book in the Kendra Michaels series by the Johansen mother and son team. The characters are fully developed. It was nice to join Kendra, Jessie and Adam on another investigation. The kidnapping of Delilah was intense with twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The friendship between Kendra and Jessie, and between Jessie and Delilah, is solid and loyal. The plot is well-written and well-thought-out. I kept guessing the kidnappers's next move and who is the primary kidnapper. I did figure the later out before the end of the story. This didn't distract from the novel's ending. The descriptions were wrote with an eye to detail. I look forward to reading more of this series. I have plenty of early books to read while I wait for the next new book.

Although it has been nearly a year since I binge read the first seven books in this exciting series by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen, I was very excited to read the 8th book in the Kendra Michaels series, Blink of an Eye. Dr. Kendra Michaels had been blind since birth for twenty years, and had a very successful procedure that gave her sight. During those years, Kendra fine-tined her other senses. Now that she has her sight, her skills are beyond acceptable. A successful music therapist, Kendra has proved to be an invaluable consultant to the police, the FBI and even the CIA.

Her current case is much more personal, however. Her good friend, Jessie Mercado, who is also a private investigator, is a bodyguard to Delilah Winter, a young singer who has achieved Superstar status. Delilah has been kidnapped and Kendra will turn over every stone until Delilah is found. So, Kendra and Jessie work together, as well as former FBI Agent Adam Lynch, a love interest of Kendra's who has been in just about every book in this series. With occasional assistance from FBI Agents Griffin and Metcalf, Kendra, Jessie and Adam desperately try and find Delilah.

I have loved every book in this series, and have rated each book a steady 4 Stars. This book went up in my estimation and thus I gave it 5 Stars. This story was utterly thrilling and having gotten quite familiar with this fabulous series and all of the connecting characters, I felt like I was right in the the thick of things while reading this exciting book.

Not only do I love the principal characters in this book, I loved Delilah as well. She was a strong individual who gave as good as she got. While on the one hand I enjoyed watching the suspense, trying to discover the motive and the identity of the kidnapper, it was also a delight watching Delilah handle her situation. It was like watching two stories in real time. All while the suspense grew and the story flowed at a rapid pace, I loved the underlying connection between Kendra and Adam. What an enjoyable story to an engaging series. I am very hopeful for book #9 to come on the horizon.

Many thanks to Grand Central Publishing and to NetGalley for this ARC for review This is my honest opinion.

My first Iris Johansen novel, & dare I say probably not my last. This 8th installment in the Kendra Michaels series can be read as a stand alone book, since I obviously read it as one. There was enough background info to let me know that Kendra was originally blind, but had a sight saving surgery in recent years, but while without her sight, she honed her other senses & now uses them to solve cases with other legal authorities.
This is a very fast paced, gripping, thrill ride of a read, fraught with action packed tension, suspense, & adventure. I'll be going back & starting at the beginning of this series now.

3.5 stars. Superstar singer Delilah Winter is kidnapped backstage at her concert. This story details the sometimes rollercoaster ride to get her back.

I don't read the Eve Duncan series by Iris Johansen anymore due to the monotony but I still like Kendra Michaels after eight books. I have always admired Kendra for what she's gone through with her blindness. I enjoy when she points out clues that other investigators have missed. I thought the mastermind behind the kidnapping was apparent from the start but I liked the ending. It was due to the last half of the book that I rated up.

Dr, Kendra Michaels is the main protagonist in this story. A famous pop star has been kidnapped, and Dr. Michaels has been called in to assist the FBI in the case. Ms. Johansen and her son Roy have collaborated on other books in the past. They are all entertaining, filled with romance and intrigue, and they never disappoint.

3++. I enjoyed it, but it's not my favorite of the Kendra books. Not as much emphasis on her remarkable observation, which I missed and also not as much sexual tension between her and Lynch, which I also missed.

I really like the Kendra Michaels series.

Jessie Mercado, is one of Kendra Michaels' closest friends. So when a former charge of Jessie's, Delilah is kidnapped in the middle of a concert, Jessie and Kendra team up with the FBI and local law enforcement to save the teen.

Kendra, using skills she developed throughout the first twenty years of her life when she was blind, finds plenty of clues, just not fast enough to halt casualties. When Jessie is also kidnapped, Kendra and Adam Lynch finally decipher where the kidnappers have taken Delilah and hope that Jessie is there too. Notifying the FBI, they discard orders to wait for the FBI and head to 'the Bone Yard.'

Arriving in the brink of time, Kendra, Lynch, Jessie and Delilah are about to uncover a plot none of them could have ever imagined; the only way to prevent the plot from wreaking more havoc, they are faced with a showdown.....

Excellent rainy day book to start to read. Only problem was I could not put it down and finished the book in one day. Great thriller with Dr. Kendra Michels, Jessie Mercado and Adam Lynch. Love the dynamics between the three characters along with the supporting FBI and Kendra’s friend Olivia. Love books where I like the key characters - looking forward to the next one in the series.

#8 in the Kendra Michaels series. I enjoy how Kendra uses her senses to figure things out. Formerly blind, she developed skills that assist her in seeing things that others miss. Superstar Delilah Winter is kidnapped and Kendra, her friends and the FBI try to find her. Quick read and even though it is part of a series, it could be a stand alone.

It felt like the character development has regressed.

I am also not a fan of re-hashing facts that have been established through this whole series but I guess that means you could read it as a standalone.

I loved this fast moving thriller. This book was written by favorite authors, had favorite characters, and a compelling, and complex story line. It was not just another kidnapping, because a set of viscous psychopaths were also involved. It kept everyone on their toes, to find a missing musical artist taken right from behind the stage. It also helped that she was a kind, and giving person, and not a selfish , or demanding star. There was no part of this book I did not like. I like when agents cross over into others jurisdictions, so we can see our Kendra Michael's work with friends, and meet more. Plus Jessie is involved, and Lynch, and other favorites, with one objective. They need Dee returned, and alive, and unharmed. Everyone is suspected until they can get a hand on how it happened. The ladies in this book are smart, and deadly, and Lynch is in black oops. The police, FB I, from several areas get involved. The timing, the difficulty, the gun fights, and the ending all kept you wanting more. It is not a cliff hanger. The ending was promising in so many ways. I guessed the mastermind, and his reasons about half of the book through. It did not stop the intensity of the story, because of how the book kept ramping up the pressure. I truly enjoyed this. 5 stars...

Moving, fast driven and thoughtfully paced mystery is what we get with the Johansen writing duo. I am and will always be a fan of the writing and the way they move the story along. It's an art to be able to keep a long-running series fresh and captivating. They do it well.

No spoilers from me, book friends. The blurb says it all. Fans of the series and going to love it.

This is the eighth book in the Kendra Michaels series by Iris & Roy Johansen.

This was a real exciting read. It keeps you on your toes the entire way through. Kendra is looking into the disappearance of a popular pop star. She is a lot lot Sherlock Holmes. She started out life blind and she pays attention to things most people miss.

Quite an unputdownable book, for sure! I did figure out who was behind it all and did a little fist pump when that was revealed at the end. Yay me!

I am really enjoying the characters in this series. I have a lot of this series in hardback and plan to do a marathon very soon.

Loved so much about it. If you like thriller, suspense mysteries, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

This is the eight in a series featuring Dr. Kendra Michaels. Her friend Jessie has her own security company. Both are strong women involved with the investigation/kidnapping of Dee along with FBI agents and LAPD.

Fast paced action. The chemistry/sparks between Kendra and Adam Lynch continues.

I have read previous novels in the Kendra Michaels series and this can be a stand alone. I have also read previous novels from Iris Johansen (Eve Duncan series) and Roy and enjoyed very much.

I think this is the first Kendra Michaels book I have read, though I'm not 100% sure.

A young friend is kidnapped and Kendra (formerly blind and highly observant) is on the case, helping the FBI to solve the clues.

An entertaining read with plenty of suspense.
