Three wolf shifters tormented by a deadly secret. Two worlds torn by a twisted legacy. One girl determined to choose her own fate.

They say being called to the world's oldest magic organization is the pinnacle of achievement for a witch. The lottery is done in secret. The names appear by magic. Membership in this exclusive club is like receiving a golden ticket. When you're called—you go, because that's how it has always been.

With only a trace of magical ability, I've accepted a different role… a life of service to the witching community. So when the leader of the Society of Ancient Magic arrives at my door to escort me to initiation, I’m convinced there’s been a mistake. My name doesn’t belong on their list. And yet…

The first guy I meet makes me feel like a princess. The second one I meet sparks an inferno in my heart. The third feels like the reason I was born. They are the sexiest males I have ever met. Dazzled by the glamour and the fabled history, I let myself fall into a world whose mystery and intrigue are as seductive as they are secretive. But not everything is as it seems within the Society of Ancient Magic.

Just because it glitters, doesn't mean it's gold.

This was a really hard book for me to get into. There are so many things that aren't explained or even a decent world building to ground a reader. It also felt more like young high schoolers than college students. The main character, Joley, just didn't resonate with me. She comes across as a simpleton more interested in guys than she does about her magic. It all just wasn't a believable reaction by her when she suddenly has magic. The 3 guys are really not all that exciting for me to get wrapped up into the story. No, this is not a series I'm interested in following.

At my age (approaching 60), life is way too short & my time is too important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Joely and her friend Nessa decide to do a spell for non-magical people that they found. Everything is normal for her friend, things go differently for Joely. The spell seems to allowed Joely to have magic, things get really weird. Joely has two ravens that come to her and has strange visions. Joely must have passed out because it is the morning when she wakes up. Nessa is relieved that she is ok, explains what she saw. Joely and Nessa spend the morning using her magic. Joely has feeling the effects when there is a knock on the door. There is a woman there saying she is there for her and she has an invitation to the Society of Ancient Magic. Joely is stunned and explains to the woman that her magic just sparked. Her parents come in and things go south quickly. Joely decides she is an adult and she is going. She sneaks out to go the school..
Joely meets some really nice girls at school. Joely is being showed around by her roommate Roz. They are going to get everything she needs for school and other stuff. Joely is overwhelmed by it all, she walks right into another person. This person sends jolts through her body. She is introduced to the man, his name is Van. She is thrown by her reaction, then she meets his brothers. She feels a pull to them. She is looking forward to the start of school and being a member of the Society. Joely learns some information about her family and other things that will complete throw her for a loop.

This was a good start to the story, you will be entertained by the story. It really takes off by the end of the book. You will see the character try to grapple with her suddenly having magic, her having a certain type means for her and her family and the three men that caught her attention and her role in other matters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in series.

KINDLE UNLIMITED

This book was a version of expectation vs reality for me. I expected a women who suddenly discovered she had powers to learn to use them, but got a girl/woman more interested in dating and relationship woes.

This story sucked me in guys

Joely lives in a family of mages. So she’s been around magic all her life. But she’s a “nonner.” She has no magic herself. But one night, during a full moon, she does a charm for her best friend, hopefully it will bring her friend love. While she’s at it, she also does a charm for herself. One that will bring her greater understanding of herself. Well, well, well . . . Somehow her magic sparked. Not only is she a mage, but she descends from an ancient line of mages and receives an invitation to a prestigious organization of magic welders. The university is amazing, and so are her new group of friends . . . And the 3 brothers she met on her first day!

This book really hooked me, but then I love me a good academy story. There is an overarching storyline here that is part magic, part sleuths, some prophecy, and some sexy time thrown in. At first I thought it odd that she might have a thing with 3 brothers, however while they’re referred to as brothers on campus, they’re magic welding wolf shifters, so “brothers” is more like packmates. The oldest of the 3, Van, had a sibling that was murdered by the headmaster and they’re there to exact justice. The rest of her soon to be harem is rounded out by Marco, and Angus. So far, Angus is the only one she has been intimate with, although it’s clear than Van also has a thing for her. Marco is practically non-existent in this book and is the least fleshed out of the group. Although none of them are really fleshed out if I’m honest. I am a bit sad that there’s no jealous mean girl (my FAVORITE part of academy stories, but I digress . . . ) per se. She does have 2 sisters that go to this university, but were not invited to join this prestigious order for which she received an invitation. 1 of them seems to be cool with it, and the other is super jealous. I hope that’s not the extent of the resident mean girl for this series, or I’ll be disappointed.

The world building is pretty good, with some rich descriptions of the campus that will be her home for a while. This looks to be a 6-part series, but given how short this book is, I suspect that, with some editing, this story probably could have been condensed into 2 maybe 3 books. At least it’s a fast read, and I do intend on reading the next book.

Before I begin my review for Dark Arts by Fiona Starr I would like to thank Booksprout for the opportunity to read this ARC in return for an honest opinion.

An elite supernatural academy for magical beings, specifically witches, Darks Arts by Fiona Starr is a seductive, sensual and satisfying introduction to the Society of Ancient Magic Series. Three hunky werewolves, one whimsical witch and prophetic visions, Darks Arts is set to get your blood boiling and mind buzzing.

Dark Arts features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Reverse harem series (not so much in this first book)
○ Steamy scenes
○ Witches
○ Werewolves
○ Vampires
○ Supernatural academy
○ Magic
○ Fate and prophecies
○ Missing persons

My overall rating for Dark Arts is…

4 stars!

Harry Potter goes to college! Ok, no, I don’t think Mr Potter would appreciate the whole three-drop-dead-gorgeous-werewolves thing, but the similarities are there. Blakeborne University is Hogwarts but the magic is more advanced and the students are older and hornier. So, if I haven’t made myself clear, I LOVED this book! I’m a sucker for supernatural academies and don’t even get me started on book boyfriends and steamy sex! This series is listed as reverse harem so get psyched for the promise of passion!

Dark Arts (Society of Ancient Magic Book 1) is expected to be released on 6 August 2020! Preorder now from Amazon!

The book starts off with FMC, Joely, who is a non-magic user. She grew up in a family of mages as the only one without magic. When she secretly finds a non-magic grimoire, she performs a spell and unlocks her magic! The Society of Ancient Magic shows up the next morning to invite Joely to join their ranks and attend a special private magic academy. There, Joely meets three boys/men who have her feeling all kinds of crazy things…

The magic system: I don’t want to throw stones here, but so far the magic system has been mostly overlooked. This was majorly disappointing. When we’re talking about a fantasy book full of witches/mages as main characters, I feel like the author should make this a bigger part of the story. We don’t know anything (absolutely zero) about ANY of the ancient magic races. We don’t know anything about the type of magic our FMC has. The book drops names, but gives no descriptions or abilities. The entire magic system is glossed over, and nobody is really using magic beyond summoning food or having clothes delivered.

The world-building is mediocre at best. I don’t really know much about this world at all. Here’s what we know:

1. There are magic users and non-magic users.
2. Vampires and wolf shifters exist. Is this widely known, or is it a secret? I have no idea.

Those two points are literally all we know about the world. I’m assuming this is a fantasy world, but I can’t even be sure of that. This might be a PNR, I dunno.

The romance started off super sweet. At first I was like, “Awww…this guy is so sweet and nice. They’re taking their time to get to know each other, it’s wonderful!” Then they literally have sex like a second later, and he ghosts her. The rest of the guys act like jerkwads until they suddenly need her help—even though they know she’s their mate. FMC takes dickface back with hardly an explanation, they immediately have sex again, and then she decides to help the guys on their quest for vengeance. The end.

So, basically, this book was a prequel. Nothing really happened. Nothing was described or explained except Joely meeting three brothers. Done.

Decent story with all the hallmarks befitting an Academy RH story. It's quite YA with superficial at times a bit self-involved, self-centered characters who get lost in their own drama.
World building is minimal, character development lacking and the romance very high school.

The writing style was a bit more of an issue for me. For starters it's written in present tense which unless you're writing a report is fairly difficult to keep straight. So a fair bit of editing needed there.
It tends to get overly descriptive, not so much in the lengths or details of the descriptions but more in choice of words used. all very dramatic. Overuse of dramatic expressions for the sake of using said expressions rather than actually adding anything to the story.
e.g. like she suddenly 'boiled with rage', but there was no trigger, no cause, it may sound dramatic, but really just makes you feel like you skipped a step, leaving you wondering what you missed, what happened, where that rage came from...

Overall I gotta say I liked her first Academy RH story a lot better. More fun and the characters had actual 'character'. It's been a year, might have to re-read it to see if I still feel the same.
At this point I'm not certain if I want to continue this story.

Things just happen in this book with no weight to any of it, despite the protagonist’s best efforts to tell us constantly how overwhelming and magical it all is. A girl is mentioned once, and then when she disappears, our protagonist talks about how strange it is that she’s gone. The protagonist’s mom collapses and goes to the hospital; this is never mentioned again. The whole book leads up to The Initiation (which I thought was happening the first night of magic school?? But maybe I misread.). When The Initiation happens and our protagonist discovers dark secrets… she leaves The Initiation to go have sex with one of the hot werewolves.

But I’m exhausted and I read it in like an hour, and it kept me from just refreshing the same four apps for that hour.

Quick and fun read!

SYNOPSIS: Joely is non-magical being who grew up in a magical household. On the night of the full moon, she and her best friend cast a charm and suddenly a well of ancient magic has opened up inside of Joely. She is automatically accepted into a university and the prestigious Society for Ancient Magic. She meets the three wolf shifters Van, Marco, and Angus who are trying to uncover the secret dealings and mysteries surrounding the Society.

WHAT I LIKED: I liked that this was a quick and fun read. It was entertaining throughout, and though Angus got the majority of the romance for this book, the group dynamic is set in a solid foundation for Joely to join in and investigate the happenings of the Society, as well as build on the romantic feelings that are already ingrained into her.

The book ends on slight cliffhanger; we understand more of what is happening within the Society and why the wolves are there, but there are still multiple unanswered questions and it’s the perfect set up for the next book. Overall, a quick (it only took me 2 hours) and enjoyable read.

Joely: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Angus: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Van: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Marco: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘Dark Arts’ is the 1st book in the Society of Ancient Magic series. After Joley’s powers are sparked she defies her father’s wishes and runs off to the academy. She has an instant attraction and connection to the brothers Van, Angus, and Marco. She quickly acts on her attraction with Angus, but there is a slow burn that begins with all three. There is added mystery and intrigue with Joely’s magical background including the drama within her family, not to mention the disappearing students. The story ends with a cliffhanger of sorts revealing the boy’s intentions and Joely’s destiny. The author gives you just barely enough info about the characters to keep you on the edge while slowly revealing agendas and secrets. This first book definitely foreshadows a hellavu lot of drama, intrigue, and action.

"Dark Arts was absolutely amazing! I've recently started to read RH stories, the moment I read the blurb I knew I needed this story in my life. I'm so glad I read this book because it was pure perfection. Lately the RH I've been reading are set on academy and schools but they tend to be bully tropes too and Dark Arts wasn't at all a bully story! . Van, Angus and Marco were phenomenal characters and I loved them with all my heart. Three different personalities and each one of them melted my heart though we didn't get to know Marco much. I don't want to give details about the story but Marco had his reason for staying away from Joely. Secrets, mystery and hidden motives combined in this first book of the Society of Ancient Magic series. A story that stole my heart and I cant wait to continue the series. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!"

I think, this book was an awesome start to a great series. So many things were thrown at me while reading this book that I have so many questions with no answers that I am dying for book 2 so maybe those questions will be answered! I loved the suspense and the mystery that this book brought. The little twists so far have been riveting; the last one in the book was a shocker! I can't wait to see how the chemistry/connection between Joely and her three guys evolves.; bring on the drama! I would highly recommend this book and this fantastic author!

This was good, intriguing, and felt like it should have been longer. I know the book description says 232 pages, but it really felt like half that.

While Ms. Starr did a great job with world building and an okay job at characterization (first books are hard in that area), there were still some places that were confusing.

An example is when Coach is talking and suddenly Joley is asked if they know her. Who asked? The Coach? No, it’s a student. Minor thing but it’s written in a way that doesn’t make sense. There are a few instances of this, minor plot points that go nowhere, and questionable reactions to situations.

Joely always thought she didn't have magic while the rest of her family did have it.

But on that night of the full moon with her friend she unlocks her magic.
Next she is offered to go to a special school. She decides to go.

What follows is friendship with the other girls at her floor, secrets from her past like that she is adopted and more, some hot guys with more secrets and a missing girl.

Great read with action, love, friendship, family, trust and more.

Can't wait to read what happens next because the story isn't finished yet.

Wow what a wicked way to kick off a series

Wow this book takes you on an epic ride filled with so many truths coming out to create a great storyline. With a great female character in Joely we see her magic spark which changes everything for her. Once arriving at the university we see her bump into Van and his brothers Angus and Marco.
From here we get to see this come to light through this twisty ride to leave you hanging at the end when she finds out more about herself.
Totally need the next book.

Must Read

I absolutely loved this book. It held my attention from the first page to the last. Her sisters are complete crap jerks and her mom & dad is obviously hiding rap and putting her in the middle of something she knew nothing about. The boys 🙄 van is a jerk I understand why but still he didn’t have to be rude . Gus , Gus, Gus 🙄🙄 you made her feel played ( because you listened to your brother but still ………… men 🙄🙄🙄🙄) Finally mister seems quit and shy I need to know more about him. I can’t wait for book 2

Joelle found her powers

Joelle was fine with being the only nonner in the family. She finds a spell book in her parents storage boxes. She decides to take it to help her friend with a boy she likes. Something simple. She also decides to look for answers for herself too. That's where things go weird for Joley. Her friends spell went just fine, but when it was turn things, magical things started to happen.
Very slow burn and not RH as this book suggests. Maybe book 2 will pick up.

Joely has been a non-mage her whole life. When her and her friend Nessa find a book and she tries a spell out she suddenly unlocks her magical side and receives an invitation to a prestigious magical school. There she navigates her powers and learns about herself and also meets a handsome boy or three. It's intriguing from the start and hard to put down once you start. I really enjoyed the plot and characters. I volunteered to read this book via Booksprout.

I liked this story. It mixed magic and mystery together to give a good story that was hard to put down. I was hooked from the first chapter as I had to find out what was going on as there seemed to be a few secrets running around as the story progressed. I liked the characters and the way secrets and mysteries were hinted and leaked out. Plus the story was told from different views to add more information and help the story along. Just a good book.

It's the start of why choose fantasy story, and it feels very much like just the start. It ends with some prophecy and visions and what are essentially extremely vague but big promises for what the rest of the series will hold. I'm not 100% sure I want to continue with the series - it wasn't *bad* but it didn't grip me. A quick read though, so worth it if your jam is fantasy-romance-why-choose-academy-prophecy stuff.
