Stories with fun and interesting facts around beds, sleeping and the night. It was a bit different then I expected, more just facts instead of stories around real facts. The narrator is very good.

A lovely audiobook consisting of 5-minute short informative stories meant for schoolchildren to listen before bed-time to learn, grow, and be curious!
The first stories are about sleep - types, elements, dreams, brain waves, beds - everything sleep would remind you of, but as you listen more, it starts to variate from historical figures to space travel which surprised me, but I couldn't stop listening. From the other hand, the first parts about sleep made me more sleepy (which is the intent of these stories I guess) than the rest of these stories as they were teaching you something and my brain wanted to listen more rather than sleep.
The narrator did a great job with her voice alterations, tone and pace which made this experience more enjoyable. Overall, a lovely audiobook with positive vibes and dreamy lullabies at the end.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Britannica Books for my DRC in exchange for my impartial review. This in no way influenced my review, which was written voluntarily.
I loved this audiobook. The narrator was awesome. I attest to its power as a bedtime book because I actually was lulled to sleep while reading this book. 😂 It wasn't boring. The narrator was just so hypnotic.
It contains so many amazing facts and knowledge for young minds, and I can only imagine the type of dreams imaginative young kids will have after listening to this at bed time.
I had so much fun listening to this one and I highly recommend it.
This was a very interesting book, informative and entertaining. As the tagline suggests, the book covers 30 interesting stories related to bedtime. And the range is indeed quite vast, as the stories go from sleeping styles to types of beds to snores to nocturnal animals to cosmic objects to astronauts. Basically, anything and everything related to bedtime or night time has been included. This reduces any chance of monotony and keeps the children wondering about where the book will go next. The content of each story is straightforward and easy to understand. It works suitably for its target audience, children aged 4 to 8. As this is an encyclopaedic kind of book, I can’t help but feeling that some of the stories would have been better enjoyed if the book were read instead of heard. Topics such as sleeping styles or space-related facts are definitely more fun and better understood by children if visual. At the same time, the narrator does a wonderful job bringing the book to life. She reads the stories in an enthusiastic yet calming voice, something that will create the perfect ambience for little listeners before they nod off to dreamland. The sound effects such as bird calls and cosmic beats further enhance the audiobook experience. Each story is just 5 minutes long and will be the perfect pre-bedtime lullaby for your little one, leading to superior knowledge and sweeter dreams.
I received an advance review copy of the book from NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I loved it, I mean really loved it!
I am already a fan of bedtime audio books but this one stands out, particularly for my eldest daughter, who at 8 years old and often leans towards non-fiction over fiction material. She devoured this in one sitting. This has been one of the few non-fiction audiobooks we have enjoyed. (The reference to farting could have had something to do with that enjoyment)
These stories’ are mostly Interesting facts about sleep, told in a story format. 29 stories to be exact and all roughly 5 minutes long. In my opinion this is an excellent way to not only educate but to settle the mind before bed. The stories are simplistic enough to understand, but also encourages the listener to think and use their imagination or visualisation skills. The narrator asks question like, “Where in the world would you like to sleep?” This audiobook also explains subjects like what happens in hospitals, how astronauts sleep in space, and my favourite, nocturnal animals.
The scene is set through the stories using subtle sound effects that add to the story but not so many that they become distracting as we have found in other audio books.
I love the narration, Joanna Lumley is perfect for this role, engaging and clear throughout with a voice that sounds enthused and natural whilst remaining soothing for a settled bedtime.
The stories are ended with beautiful lullabies from around the world.
I’m delighted to have received a copy of this for our bedtime routine, I can see this becoming a firm favourite!
This book gives true stories about the history of sleeping, nocturnal animals, interesting bed designs from around the world, the largest bed and the biggest sleepover, with a dozen other amazing facts about the nighttime.
There are details about what happens in our brains when we dream, the sleep cycles we go through, and how our body is replenished and healed during sleep. There are stories about stars and planets, and how astronauts sleep in space. There are facts about the phases of the Moon and how an eclipse happens. There are even details about how animals hibernate and prepare for that long winter sleep.
I love the illustrations in this book! The art style is colorful and clear, and the designs are really attractive.
This would be such a fun book to read at bedtime with a curious kid who loves to find out about the world!
Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a free and honest review. All the opinions stated here are my own true thoughts, and are not influenced by anyone.
This is a good beginning nonfiction book for kids! All of the stories have good information and large pictures. The stories are about science, animals, and history, but all are related to sleep in some way. The people in the illustrations are diverse. The book includes a glossary, an index, and sources.

I tried repeatedly to listen to this new audiobook but fell asleep every five minutes. This is a children’s non-fiction title, so I sent it to my three grandchildren in Washington state. All of them. Zonked. Just like that. Talk about boring. How frustrating. Well, not really if you’re listening to 5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime. Thirty Amazing Stories featuring frozen frogs, King Tut’s beds, the world’s biggest sleepover, the phases of the moon, and more, by Sally Symes, Jackie McCann, Gen Arena, Rachel Valentine, and published by the Britannica Group. Readers and listeners of all ages can enjoy this beautifully-illustrated children’s story in print or audio form. Touted as “the ultimate brainy bedtime companion for children aged 4 to 8, this book could easily entertain younger and older readers and listeners. Hey Britannica, did it ever dawn on you that adults, tired as Hello, would be soothed by short stories full of entertaining non-work-related facts? Actually, duh. Now that I ponder this thought, your editors may be no-so-evil word geniuses who know adults are too proud to admit they enjoy the easy flow of children’s non-fiction. That means Britannica is forced to create children’s books that parents can read to their offspring so everyone can fall asleep. Ah, ha! A new genre emerges. This book, when presented on audio, features a soothing unnamed English woman’s voice that offers listeners an enchanting, melodious, and sedative experience. I consumed this book, as usual, in my car and on my way – somewhere. Perhaps it was the unusually warm sauna-like air in my car set against the chilly artic outside wind, or perhaps it was the calming quiet voice of the narrator herself. I have no clue. All I know is that I felt my lids get heavier by the minute. After a while, my hands were concrete blocks suspended in the air. The steering wheel repelled my Gorilla-Glue grip and my neck went all wet-noodle on me while I was moving through traffic at 40 miles per hour. It’s a darn good thing Britannica thought enough to put a roaring lion in the third minute of their first story. Otherwise, I’d be a goner. You might want to ax that roaring lion for future versions, Britannica. That sucker woke me up in an instant and notified me I was about to enter into a nightmare. Lifesaving for me. But not that great for little kids trying to go to sleep. Grandma and grandpa! This is the kind of book you want to buy – in whatever form you like – to give your grandkids. It’s a good old-fashioned Britannica special, produced like the countless volumes of encyclopedic wonderlands we old fogies grew up reading. These stories are truly interesting, age-appropriate, and teach kids things that are both useless and useful simultaneously, but always entertaining. Its art is inviting and inspires a stunning-to-ponder mentality, and its reputation is nothing less than up-to-par with the big-chops-reputation Britannica maintained throughout its publishing lifetime.

These bedtime stories are something else, and the title's 'really true' part is just so on point. This was a fascinating and informative read. I listened to the audiobook and it was a really magical experience. While listening to this audiobook I learned a lot about the history of sleeping, nocturnal animals, how astronauts sleep in space and many other fun facts. My curiosity and imagination were positively intrigued and to say I loved it would be an understatement.
There is one downside though. Was it because I found these stories so interesting, but my brain was all awake and ready to learn?! With that being said, these were hardly bedtime stories for me.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Britannica Group for providing this audiobook in exchange for an honest review!
5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime: 30 Amazing Stories: Featuring Frozen Frogs, King Tut’s Beds, the World's Biggest Sleepover, the Phases of the Moon, and More by Britannica Books was narrated by Joanna Lumley. It was written by Jackie McCann, Jen Arena, and Sally Symes.

5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime has thirty five minute sections, but I am not sure that I would classify them as stories. Each of the segments is well told and researched, with a combination of silly or weird facts and more serious sounding information about sleep and all sorts of things related to it. They are interesting to listen to and full of information that will be new to most of the young readers or listeners that this book is aimed at. The book information says that the printed version has specially commissioned artwork, which I expect will help keep the attention of young readers, however the audiobook narrator did a wonderful job with inflection and emotion to keep my attention and interest. Please keep in mind that this is a book that uses British vernacular, and some terms in the text are different because of this. Those that have a hard time with things like lorry instead of truck, biscuit instead of cookie, and so on just be forewarned. I love it, and think it is a great thing for readers of all ages to understand that people that speak the same language do not always sound the same.
5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime is a great bedtime, or anytime, read. Perfect for short reads together.
5 MINUTE REALLY TRUE STORIES FOR BEDTIME is a very cool collection of bedtime themed stories. It spans topics from "What Are Dreams?" to how different animals sleep to "The Northern Lights." Each one is meant to be about 5 minutes, but I found this varied a lot by how interested a child was in the story and of course how quickly the reader reads. Some of them are longer and some shorter, but they are each great for a bedtime read.
What I loved: This book has so much information in it - even as an adult, there is a lot to learn, and I found myself just as fascinated in some of stories as my child was. Every page has colorful and detailed illustrations related to that story that make it perfect for snuggling up together and reading with a young child. This is great for older preschoolers and elementary school aged readers who can appreciate a serial book - it is not a single-sitting read, but is great for children who like to hear something new each night.
There's so many great stories in here. The stories about how animals sleep are favorites with our animal lover, but I was really fascinated by the historical and world record sleep-related stories. It is always great to find a book that children and caregivers can both enjoy, and this one definitely fit the bill! There's also a great bonus in that it is educational - and things are explained such that young children can understand them.
Final verdict: 5-MINUTE REALLY TRUE STORIES FOR BEDTIME is a great educational read focused around sleep and bedtime. Highly recommend for readers who enjoy learning new things and having something new to read each night.
Please note that I received a review copy. All opinions are my own.
In 5 minute segments, Joanna Lumley narrates 30 bedtime stories that will delight young listeners who love science, facts, and nature. Each story has a different nighttime related topic, with occasional background music or sound effects that enhance the narration.
From how to sleep in a hammock, to different sleeping spaces, to the habits of nocturnal animals, there are interesting topics that will engage the listener. Occasional mentions of farts and poo are sure to grab their attention, and a few words may need to be explained for American listeners (zed, lorry, ladybirds...).
Joanna Lumley was an excellent choice for narrator, with her low voicing of the text relaying that perfect bit of coziness. While some of her pronunciations were not as expected, this is likely due - again and despite some familiarity with her accent - to an American ear and a British voice.
If you enjoy reading aloud at bedtime, or if looking for a bedtime read for your more independent non-fiction reader, this is a great choice. But having Joanna Lumley reading these stories, and singing the lullabies from various countries at the end, may be even better. Recommended.
This review refers to a temporary audiobook galley I voluntarily listened to via NetGalley, courtesy of Publisher Spotlight Audio and Britannica Books. A positive review was not required and all opinions expressed are my own.
I actually had a great time listening to this book. This is a book of bedtime stories for kids who like interesting facts or if you just want to make bedtime story time a time to learn interesting things. If you don't feel like reading, you could turn this on, lady next to your child and listen together. I live in the United States and this is a British book. If you are reading to kids in the US, you can change pounds to dollars and lorries to trucks as you read. Even though I am not a huge nonfiction fan, I loved listening to this audio book. The reader does an excellent job of making the story interesting and fun while not being too exciting, so kids can fall asleep. It is kind of funny to say that while this was soporific, it was also something I could see children looking forward to reading each night. 5 minute stories are just right. There are over 25 stories all talking about things that happen at night or having something to do with night/sleep.I think my granddaughters would really enjoy listening to these stories. If only I could read as well as this reader. I got this audio book from netgalley. It is by the Britannica group. Even so, that doesn't sway my review in any way.
Tons of trivia regarding sleep and bedtime in 5 minute-ish segments.
Lots of bits of information about sleep; and everything sleep related (targeted for children).
Who knew frigatebirds fly for days and can sleep while they are sleeping? I didn’t.
And that ... snails can sleep for years. In 1846 a desert snail from Egypt had been given to a British museum who had glued it to a display. The snail woke up 4 years later, woke up ate some cabbage and lived another 2 years.
The narrator does an amazing job reading this book with a perfect mix of excitement and pre-bedtime calmness. Many sounds are also incorporated into this audio and keeps things interesting. Really well done.
The last chapter "Lullabies Around the World" stole my heart. I would pay for this book just to play the lullabies over and over. Stole my heart! a gazillion stars to the to the narrator.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review an advance read copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
"5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime" was a delightful collection of stories.
It has a wide variety of curious and short stories, perfect for the inquisitive minds of young children, full of knowledge and wonder about so many different topics: science, nature, animals, history and legends. And it ends in the most beautiful of ways, with lullabies from around the world.
I’ll have to admit that listening to this as an adult also gave me some knowledge about small things I was unaware of, and one can never stop learning. We keep on learning until the day we die.
I thought this was just wonderful and I can truly recommend it for parents and their young children, but also for teachers, educators and anyone with just a passion for knowledge in general, no matter the age range.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers Spotlight Audio and Britannica Books for letting me listen to this audiobook in exchange for my honest review and opinion.
Big thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook!
The audiobook is filled with 30 short stories related to sleep for children. From bears to astronauts, and from the Egyptians to lullabies, the audiobook takes you on a whole journey! The connection between sleep and the subject of the short story was always there, sometimes in the most creative ways. The audiobook is filled with fun facts, that are really true. I'm a 21-year-old and even I learned so many new things! My boyfriend (who's an ecologist) was even proud of me when I named all the new things I learned about owls and bats!
The narrator did an excellent job. I never drifted off while listening, even when driving home after a long day of work. The voice and the tone are catching but calming, the ideal combination for bedtime stories.
I highly recommend this book, whether it's for your kids or for yourself, I'm sure you'll enjoy it ;)
Thanks to NetGalley and Publisher Spotlight Audio / Britannica Books for the digital ALC of this audiobook.
I have a confession to make. I didn’t listen to the stories in this book at bedtime. I was going to save them, but I rand out of stuff to listen to during the workday and thought I’d start, but when I started I couldn’t stop.
I LOVE Joanna Lumley’s voice. She’s British with a melodic voice that’s perfect for bedtime stories. Plus, these stories are short and full of interesting facts that all kids will love, from how astronauts sleep on the space station to how sharks sleep in the depths of the ocean. This audiobook was a pleasant way to spend a couple of work hours, but this would absolutely be perfect to divide up and listen to with your little one at bedtime.
It’s out now, so if you’re looking for new and cool things to add to your bedtime routine, definitely give this one a try.
5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime // by Britannica Books
This was an excellent audiobook to listen to! Joanna Lumley was the perfect choice as a narrator and I couldn't imagine anybody else telling these stories better. Her voice was so calming but at the same time exciting and engaging. I never could listen to just a single story and had to play a couple in a row each time. Each story related to sleeping or night time in some way but I was surprised to see just how many places this book took us: under water, into the wild, and even into space! I am an animal lover but even I got to learn about species all over the world that I hadn't heard of before. It was also fun to see how each story tied in just a little bit with the one before and would lead us on to the next.
Thank you to the authors, publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
"5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime" from Britannica Books was such an interesting and different take on traditional bedtime stories. This audiobook contains a collection of short non-fiction stories/essays based on different topics most involving sleep or night time in some way. Stories of nocturnal animals and how astronauts sleep while in space are included in the collection. In the beginning, our little ones were disappointed that the stories were not fiction. However, they settled into the relaxing narration and gave the audiobook a fair try. I do think that for some children, non fiction probably appeals to their sense of wonder. For those children that enjoy more fact based content and not so much fantasy... this audiobook would be the perfect selection. It is not common to see this type of audiobook for children, so I loved the unique aspect of the idea and writing. The narration is excellent and high quality and is definitely relaxing to listen to!
5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime by the Britannica Group is a collection of short segments with real facts related to sleep and bedtime. This review is for the audio version. It is a unique collection and inquisitive children will love them. However, they are probably not well suited to bed time. Truly inquisitive children may have difficulty listening to just one segment and not asking a myriad of questions afterwards. Surprisingly, my son absolutely loves this collection and is not asking a million questions afterwards (just a few). I also think this collection was mislabeled with "stories." While there are some stories told, this book is honestly just a collection of interesting facts, not stories. We loved this book in audio format because the narrator's soothing tone was perfect for calming before bed. We highly recommend it! I received a digital copy of this audiobook from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Oh I loved this. Such a unique idea. So I approached my two sons (Thom aged 11 & Jem 8) to ask if they were interested in listening to these bedtime stories each night, they were so we did! We listened to the audio version voiced by the delicious Joanna Lumley who added so much to the experience.
Each of the 30 stories tell us little factual nuggets about sleep... Such as why we snore, when we dream, why lullabies help us get to sleep, how turtles breath through their bottoms when they sleep...my boys loved this, especially my eldest. It's genuinely fascinating, a great learning curve but also very relaxing having Mme Lumley tell it in such a wonderful way.
If you want to break from the norm of bedtime stories I would highly recommend this, very educational, fascinating, wonderful bedtime book
Thank you to Netgalley and Britannica Books for an advance copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a great book for children to learn about lots of things regarding sleep. The book is different than I imagine as the title suggests it is true stories for bedtime. Whilst they are true stories they are more factual details rather than stories. But still very enjoyable and informative.
Johanna Lumley does the narration and I thought she did a marvellous job. Here in the UK she often presents various historical and factual programmes and she has the perfect voice for the job. I also like the sound effects used throughout the book and I am sure children and adults alike will really enjoy this book.
A large book that is a collection of short kid-friendly essays on science, many of them centering around night time or sleeping. It's a fun bedtime book; the sentences are written with grace and ease, so would work either as a read aloud or for the child to read on their own. The science is popular based (one of the source texts listed in the back is a Bill Bryson book!) so most parents will be comfortable with it; this isn't a deep dive into any subject but a good general knowledge base. The illustrations are warm and cosy with good visual interest.
A fun book that would be a good gift for families; since it works as either a read-aloud or a solo book you don't have to know the bedtime routine!
As the title states, the book is a collection of stories that last about 5 minutes each (2 to 7min). I listened to them with my 6 and 8 year old girls and we found them interesting and informative. I quickly discovered though, that these are too thought provoking (or in the case of my 8 year old, question inducing) to be listened to at bedtime. In addition to the wide range of topics that it covers, the strange pronunciations, British terms and use of the metric system created at least 10 minutes of questions following each 5 minute story. I highly recommend this book, but would suggest listening to it at mealtime instead of bedtime.
The narrator has a melodic voice that reminds one of a cheerful grandmother.
This audio book was a great find as it was so different. This was also the first non fiction book my daughter has listened to at bedtime and she loved it. The book consists of lots of five minute episodes all about sleep. It's hard to believe that there can be so much information to fill all these stories but there was so much to learn! Each story was full of information and covered all topics: how we sleep, sleep in space, The Northern Lights, Tutankhamen, star constellations etc. The book was narrated by Joanna Lumley who has a lovely calming voice, just right for bedtime. It has become part of our bedtime routine to listen to one of these each night together and we have both loved it. Thank you NetGalley and Brittanica books for the advance audiobook.
Review of 5-Minute Really True Stories for Bedtime - Audiobook
This is a very different sort of bedtime stories book in that they are all true facts and not fairy tales. Very interesting for children and educational and informative at the same time. They are themed around bedtime and have such titles as Why do we sleep and King Tut's bed. We had the audio book version read by Joanna Lumley. The reading was very well done and she has a wonderful voice for this sort of thing. There is such a lot of information given that it would be beneficial to have the physical book alongside the audio version I feel. My six year old enjoyed listening to these, but I do feel having the actual book as well would reinforce the facts.
I’m a fan of sleepy time audio (I listen to chengyus like it’s my job to help me sleep) and this narrator did a great job. She has excellent pacing and expression. I would love to listen to her read almost anything.
These 5 minute pieces aren’t stories, they’re more informative little essays, which I actually like better for resting/sleeps but wasn’t expecting because of the title.
I can absolutely see this being used at home, and maybe as relaxing break time resource (or in the calm down corner) in the classroom.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for a positive review.
The format of this audiobook is just right for all ages. Each bedtime story is broken up into a 5-minute vignettes that are informative, and relaxing to listen to. The audiobook starts by telling about different kinds of beds that people have slept on around the world, or throughout history. It goes on to discuss animals' sleep habits, the solar system, and climates around the world. The narrator has a British accent, and speaks in soothing tones. My children enjoyed listening to this at bedtime as they fell asleep, as well as in the car on the way to school. We all discussed things we heard and felt like we learned more about animals and history. Highly recommended!
I received an advanced copy of this audiobook, from the publisher through netgalley, in exchange for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. I absolutely enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The narrators did a great job reading this book. The author did a great job writing this book. The pacing of each story is great. It keeps your attention from the first minute. I would recommend listening to this audiobook to anyone and everyone. This audiobook is in stores now for $12.99 (USD).
