Stegner’s epic Merlin and Arthur tale defies genre classification. Is it Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Mystery, Thriller, or Contemporary? It is all of these with Dystopian elements and a touch of Romance. It weaves together legendary Merlin and King Author returning in the world’s darkest hours to join others in a contemporary struggle against evil forces that threaten world order and mankind when they unwittingly unleash a pandemic.
It is a fascinating read filled with both fantasy and timely messages.

I've been waiting for an author to bring Merlin and Arthur into the modern world. This book delivered and kept me engaged from beginning to end! It is a timely story that effortlessly ties the awakening of Merlin and Arthur to a violent event brought on in modern times by a corrupt Russian government. The interweaving of human struggle, tragedy, and triumph throughout this epic brought a quality of credibility and immediacy. I would recommend this book highly!

I enjoyed the interplay of the historical and mythological settings around Arthur and Merlin with the parallel with the COVID-19 pandemic, intentional or not. What prevented me from giving this book 4 stars was the lack of the language differences between fifth century and twenty-first century Welsh.

Ironically this book, which centers around a pandemic of epic proportions, was written well before the current Coronavirus Pandemic was a part of our lives. It involves how the world reacted to this threat created by evil scientist and their government. The battle to control the pandemic centers around two magical heroes from times past. They awakened and play a major role in the attempt to stop the spread of the pandemic before it destroys the human population of planet earth. It is fascinating the way complex characters are developed and how geographic areas are described in a way that quickly paints vivid images in one's mind. The plot and storyline plays the darkness of human behaviour against the heroic acts of others. It is great read - well worth the heartbeats you will spend on it.
