ALEXANDRA STODDARD is a philosopher of contemporary living and author of many best selling books, including the classic Living a Beautiful Life: 500 Ways to Add Elegance, Order, Beauty and Joy to Every Day of Your Life, Choosing Happiness: Keys to a Joyful Life, Things I Want My Daughters to Know: A Small Book About the Big Issues in Life, and You Are Your Choices: 50 Ways to Live the Good Life. Alexandra's newest book Happiness For Two: 75 Secrets for Finding More Joy Together, published in January 2008, is now in its second printing.
I first read this book when it came out in late 90s and just reread during a vacation. Based on the intervening 20 plus years of life experience I acquired in between reads, a lot of Alexandra Stoddard’s life advice is on point.
Having a hazy recollection of reading Alexandra Stoddard’s “Living a Beautiful Life” as a girl, I’m revisiting her works with pleasure. Her words are thoughtful, her advice straightforward & her privilege, though clearly there, is acknowledged gracefully many times. She has a certain way of seeing the beauty in the ordinary ups & downs of life & a clear feminist streak despite her background. I often feel I’m listening to a wise friend. Many times I’ve stopped to jot down a few of her gems, and I’m tempted to pick up a used copy just to thumb through from time to time.
Not my favorite writing style and not a big fan of the quotes because I am not very sure how it ties to the topic.. But still a read and agreed with certain values that the author expressed.
This book is not up to the usual Alexandra Stoddard standard. That said, the chapter on saying "No" is great and I recommend part 3 of the book as well.
