An ancient dragon warrior determined to protect what’s his…
Former general Mikael lost everything thousands of years ago. His clan, his family, his honor. Now he’s awakened in a new world that has devolved into chaos—fire, blood and destruction. He and his brothers are ordered to live with Avery, a human female, and her younger brothers. Avery is nothing he should want. She’s too soft, too sweet…too happy. But he can’t stop his growing obsession with her.
The human female who threatens his jaded heart…
House flipper Avery is no stranger to heartbreak, and knows that the ones you love most can stab you in the back the quickest. When she’s asked to shelter a bunch of dragon shifters, her instinct is to say no. Until she meets the ragtag group of males who are struggling to adjust to the new world. Against her better judgment, she agrees to take them in. Even if the gruff Mikael has heartbreak written all over him, she can’t help but fall for the sexy dragon a little more every day. But when a threat from her past emerges, promising to tear her world apart, things suddenly change between them. As they race against the clock to save her family, Mikael must risk everything and claim her before it’s too late.
Katie Reus is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Red Stone Security series, the Redemption Harbor series and the Deadly Ops series. She fell in love with romance at a young age thanks to books she pilfered from her mom's stash. Years later she loves reading romance almost as much as she loves writing it. However, she didn't always know she wanted to be a writer. After changing majors many times, she finally graduated with a degree in psychology. Not long after that she discovered a new love. Writing. She now spends her days writing paranormal romance and sexy romantic suspense.
Ancient Enforcer by Katie Reus 3rd book in the Ancient Rising series. Post apocalyptic paranormal romance. With dragon shifters. Can be read as a stand-alone romance but better as part of the series.
Mikael is a thousand year old dragon. Avery is human in charge of a construction crew helping to rebuild housing in New Orleans. Mikael is sure that Avery is his mate. Avery doesn’t want a commitment in the chaos of the new world. As they work to figure out what’s between them, old enemies cause havoc and bring danger to the tentative peace in New Orleans where King is alpha in charge.
Dragon shifters, wolf shifters, and witches against an ancient evil dark mage. An exciting adventure where loyalty and deep friendships are key. Plus an adorable baby dragonling becomes a hero. Great romantic suspense. Satisfying romance. Can’t wait for stories for Mikael’s brothers.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I also purchased a copy to share.
I can't get enough of these Ancient dragon shifters. They have an intenseness to them since they come from a much older time. This world to them is to strange and they have some communication problems since they don't understand the current slang. It's very entertaining.
There is just so much to love about Mikael. He's an ancient enforcer, so to see this intense shifter fall completely under Avery's spell made me happy. He's from a time where males takes what they want but he was patient with Avery. Maybe a little too patient, but it was sweet.
Avery was just a sweet heroine. She was kind and well liked. I like that she was the boss of all these male humans and shifters in her job. It shows how much everyone liked her since she didn't have the hardness to her that a boss needs.
I enjoyed the plot twist. It kept things interesting and brought together so many of the side characters that I'm loving and enjoying in this series.
I'm also loving these dragon yearlings. I'm so excited about the potential for two more. I really hope we get to see them in upcoming books. They make me want my own pet dragon!
Ancient Enforcer is book 3 in the Ancients Rising series and another enjoyable addition to this series. Mikael is an ancient enforcer who recently awakened with his two younger brothers from thousands of years in hibernation. Since they were newly awake King thinks Avery is the perfect person to help them become accustomed to this new time. From the moment Mikael lays eyes on her he knows he has met his mate. I love how he tried to go slow with her but then realized he was in the friend zone so he decided it was time she knew who she belonged too. I loved Mikael and Avery together although I did find Avery stubborn at times they were a perfect match. As usual there is an enemy who threatens to destroy everything but with him brings someone from Mikael's past whom he thought was long dead. I can't wait to finally get King and Aurora's book which is next.
***I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.***
4 - "I will do anything to make you smile..." Stars!
Another great addition to the Ancients Rising series, with Ancient Enforcer giving us Dragon-Shifter; Mikael and human; Avery working towards their HEA. You get more POV from King and Aurora as well, all building up to their book; Ancient Vendetta currently slated for release at the end of 2021.
I enjoyed this one, we get more dragonling inclusion with new baby Hunter adopting Alpha-Shifter King, while he still works through the Vampire problems in New Orleans, those problems inevitably link back to Avery and her bothers, as well as Mikael and his brothers too.
Every time she turned around there he was. Even if he was working, she knew he was aware of her...
Avery has firmly stuck Mikael in the friend-zone something he and his dragon are not happy with, and when she becomes a target from an unknown enemy, all bets are off and he makes it his mission to ensure she knows exactly how he feels about her. Something she initially rails against, until the threat becomes very real and her family are directly in the line of fire.
She wanted to be filled by him, claimed by him. She wanted forever with him...
I am really enjoying this series, as a spin-off from my all time Reus favorite, the Darkness series the author has really taken the story-line and character potential and run with it. With old and new characters recurring and merging to keep things moving along, all the while as new plots develop and characters personal stories expand, as a reader I am invested, and I cannot wait for more.
"I'm hungry... but not for food."
Which is why for the life of me I cannot understand why we do not get any more from it until potentially the end of the year. I know that this isn't cast in stone and the author often brings forward her release dates but an almost twelve month break between releases is an awfully long time in the mind of a reader, and I have to admit I fear the momentum will stall because of it. That-said I am desperate to see what story King and Aurora will finally get, so I look forward to reading it (hopefully before the end of December!)
ARC generously provided by the author in exchange for the above honest review.
This is one of those moments where I wished I liked this book more. This has been on my TBR since January 2021. I've picked this up and put it down at least 3 times in that period of time. I finally finished it now because I didn't have any audio books that I REALLY wanted to read at the moment and this would just have to do. This time around, I picked this up and finished it for all the wrong reasons.
The first 50% or so was pretty okay. The characters were interesting enough. The story seemed to be going places. The side secondary characters were pretty entertaining. After that, the focus became the relationship and I started to kinda not really like the hero. I don't know what flipped the switch for me but by the end, I was rolling my eyes everytime he would say something. The heroine also started off great. She was driven and competent. Everyone liked and respected her. Then her work took a backseat to the relationship and I lost my patience for the relationship.
It's totally in the realm of possibilities that I was just in a weird mood (which I wouldn't put past me at this point) and took it out on this book. So maybe take this review with a great big grain of salt.
I do love a good dragon romance and I’ve quickly become addicted to this series.
Mikael and his two brothers Ivyn and Cas are newly awakened to a much different world. King puts them with Avery and her brothers Anthony and Riel. The attraction between Mikael and Avery is instant but they both fight it and put each other firmly in the friend zone. Both Avery and Mikael’s pasts return to cause problems. Which results in an action packed read. We also have a cute and adorable dragonling.
This is another entertaining read filled with fabulous characters. Like most readers I’m eagerly awaiting Kings book but I’ve no idea when that will be.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by NetGalley
Gah, I can’t get enough of this series! Mikael and Avery are proof that every hero and heroine are exceptional.
Mikael was a bit lost after coming out of hibernation. He’s still learning what some of the sayings mean but he’s more than happy to be under the care of the human woman, Avery. Watching him struggle with his understanding of what he was experiencing with her was so much fun as was his complete jealousy when another male even looked her way. This author knows how to create heroes that check each of my boxes.
Avery was pretty fierce, despite the fact she was a human surrounded by shifters. She works a man’s job which I think made my heart yearn for her to find happiness with Mikael due to her lack of softer thngs in her life. The other women in the series also were a great contributing factor to the story and I loved them all even more for their continued support for one another.
This story thrums with action and drama from the very beginning. With a mystery at it’s core, suspense ramping things up towards the end, and the steamy awareness between Mikael and Avery throughout the whole book, this had me turning pages non-stop.
I’m completely captivated by this world! Every character centered here has already won my heart or is in the process of winning it. There’s one lion shifter I’m particularly anxious to see take the fall and I can’t wait until we get his story. Lord, I hope we get his story!
Another yummy dragon shifter romance. Avery put Mikael in the friend zone, and he has no clue what that means after having been asleep for thousands of years. Danger comes calling and he finally moves out of the friend zone. Lots of action, drama, adventure, romance and sex along the way. So nice to see all the previous peeps.
There are so many more creatures (dragons, lions, tigers, wolves, phoenix) to get HEAs, but I'm sure we are going to have to wait until the last book for Aurora and King.
Mikael, a dragon shifter had just awakened from a millennia long sleep when he and his brothers find a place to stay with Avery. She and her brothers are trying to help Mikael and his brothers get used to the new world they find themselves in.
King is the alpha for the territory that Mikael and his brothers decided to stay in and had made the arrangements as to where he and his brothers would be staying and working. Most humans know supernaturals existed and there in New Orleans there are humans like Avery who wanted to help. As Mikael and Avery spend more time together they both let their feelings show a little more. Avery is a little relationship phobic since her father was a total jerk to her mother and she doesn't want the same thing to happen to her in a relationship. But Mikael has some baggage from his past as well since his family had been killed a long time ago. He wasn't sure he wanted to let another female get that close to him again because he didn't want to be hurt again. Needless to say, they both had baggage that they needed to work through.
It isn't until Avery finds herself in danger that Mikael really shows her how much he feels for her. Sure they had a couple of moments but I'm not sure it would have gone anywhere fast if they hadn't been thrown together because of the danger she was in. Then as if the danger she's in isn't enough, a person from Mikael's past shows up and seems to bring even more danger with him. The twist this story took at that point was a good one though because it really seemed to ratchet up the tension and action in this story.
I loved how Mikael and Avery's romance took a little time to manifest. It was fun to watch them slowly give into their feelings and get to know each other even as the danger got worse for them but brought them closer. I really loved seeing another Dragonling (baby dragon) because they are just too cute. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing more and more of them in future stories. All the different supernaturals in this series have been fun to get to know. You never know what new kind of supernatural will pop up next. I loved this story.
Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Will her past scars prevent her from seing what is really in front of her ...
From the moment Avery and her boys were introduced in the previous book, I was curious about them. Avery is not the average girl, even before the Fall, when the humans world was turned upside down, by the unveiling of the paranormal beings living alongside them, and when some crazy dragon shifters tried to destroy it, she chooses to help and sided with the Alpha of her city. She is a mother’s hen for her boys, her younger brothers but also others who where put under her charge like three dragon brothers. If only she could view the elder Mikael as such, she tries to put him in the friend zone area but he still awakens dreams and needs she long ago refused to entertain for any man. Dragon not human. Mikael awakened from a long sleep not so long ago to see the world he has always known changed in a very different one. Now he must walk this new one with own guilt but also a woman by his side who keeps him at arms length when he desires so much more from her. Both are very protective persons, they put themselves before the others to defend those under their care. And while Avery is only human, it does not lessen her strength to do what is right. Her main problem is she never recovered from her mother’s heartbreak, why she has sworn off any possible romantic entanglement. When Mikael still blames himself for his family’s massacre when it was only circumstances or malice that had him away.
Some flashbacks enlighten the growth of their romance, as while they play a game of hide and seek, the feelings they have for one another slowly expand until they can’t deny them even if they try to lie to themselves.
I loved the story added insights of King (the city’s alpha), and when I discovered his story is the next to come, I can’t wait to put my hands on it.
In all, it is a fun and entertaining read which explore the many sides of the paranormal beings. Definitely a series to read as many of protagonists will need their own tale. 4.5 stars

I have been granted an advance copy by the author, here is my true and unbiased opinion.
The third book in the Ancients Rising series, Ancient Enforcer focuses on Mikael and Avery. Mikael is an ancient dragon shifter new to New Orleans who falls in love with Avery, a human charged with looking after Mikael and his newly-awakened brothers. As Avery and her brothers help Mikael and his brothers acclimate to the modern world, their friendship turns to more. With enemies old and new threatening them, their family, and those they love, Mikael and Avery will do whatever it takes to protect them and each other.
Mikael and Avery have a wonderful friends-to-lovers romance. It’s pretty clear that they care for each other from the start. However, both resist acting on their feelings for fear of ruining the friendship as well as the friendships that have developed between their respective brothers. I like that Mikael and Avery don’t act selfishly or impulsively, and they respect each other and the friendship they created. They have a deep and lasting bond.
I also love the other dynamic relationships in the story. From King and Aurora to King’s relationship with his people to Avery’s strong friendships, the author does a wonderful job of highlighting the importance of love and family throughout this series. Mikael and his brothers, for example, lost most of their family centuries ago. However, they are warmly welcomed into the family by Avery and her brothers. They all develop a strong bond and begin to see each other as brothers. I love how loyal and dedicated they are to each other, and they prove that family is what you make of it.
Something that continues to amaze me in this series is the author’s skill in creating a unique and vivid world filled with a wide variety of supernatural beings. In Ancient Enforcer, much like Ancient Enemy, the people of New Orleans continue to rebuild after the global exposure of the supernatural. New hierarchies have been established, and it is interesting to see how humans, dragons, vampires, witches, and more figure out this new normal.
Speaking of new normal, we have another baby dragon! Hunter is the newest addition to the super-fantastic, charismatic, and lovable baby dragons, and he is a little ball of happy energy! I love Hunter and his playful antics. He is so lovable and silly, yet he shows such bravery and determination when it matters most. I adore the pet dragons and hope to see more in future books!
Finally, I just have to mention King’s story, which continues to intrigue me. He is a fearless and honorable leader who garners respect from the entire supernatural world. King’s relationship with Aurora is the slowest-building romance ever, and I’m totally here for it! I can’t wait to see what’s in store for King, Aurora, and all of the other characters in the series!
I highly recommend Ancient Enforcer to readers that enjoy urban fantasies with unique characters, a ton of pulse-pounding action, great world-building, and a fantastic friends-to-lovers romance. Plus, there are dragons!!
Though this is the third book in the Ancients Rising series, it can be read as a standalone. Thanks so much to NetGalley and the author for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
I don't know what happened, one minute I was enjoying ancient dragon shifter and human female romance, the next I was dragging my heels. I literally had to force myself to read the last 40% of the book, something which I should have been able to do in 90 minutes, and it took me all day. It's 21:00 hours and I am not kidding. I have done everything (aside from cleaning, obvs) except reading this book.
Mikael is an ancient dragon enforcer trying to adapt to living in the modern world. Avery is a human who is charged with looking after Mikael and his brothers and assimilating them into the modern world. There's Mikael's ancient enemy, who killed the rest of his family, and a vampire master who is indiscriminately making new vampires and allowing them to feed and kill their victims.
Honestly , I'm too bored to continue. There's hell realms, all the usual cast of shifters, an evil stepmother, kidnapping, vials of green evil (yawn). I am so disappointed because I lurve Katie Reus' novels and this one was just a swing and a miss for me.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
4.5 stars--ANCIENT ENFORCER is the third instalment in Katie Reus’s contemporary, adult ANCIENTS RISING paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is ancient dragon shifter and former general/enforcer Mikael, and human / house flipper Avery Cortez’ story line. ANCIENT ENFORCER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
SOME BACKGROUND: Months earlier, several dragons rose from their sleep, and in the aftermath destroyed much of the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, in an apocalyptic showdown known as The Fall, but in doing so revealed the existence of the supernatural world to humankind. Ancients Rising focuses on the recovery of the city, and the group of supernaturals and dragons who have come to call New Orleans their home.
Told from several third person perspectives including Mikael and Avery, ANCIENT ENFORCER follows the building romance and relationship between ancient dragon shifter and former general Mikael, and human / house flipper Avery Cortez. Mikael and his younger brothers had been asleep for hundreds of years but with their rising after The Fall, Avery Cortez is assigned by the Alpha of New Orleans, wolf shifter King, as housemother to Mikael, and his brothers Casimir and Ivyn, As the foreperson on the rebuilding of a part of the town, Avery is up close and personal with a number of the supernatural inhabitants and finds herself pulled towards the aura of her latest house mate but New Orleans continues to struggle in its’ recovery, and with it, a fight for power re-emerges as it sets its’ sights on our leading hero. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Avery and Mikael, and the potential fall-out as Mikael finds himself caught between head and heart; and Avery places herself in the direct line of fire to rescue the man with whom she is falling in love.
Mikael knows that Avery is his mate but bides his time in his approach to the woman who has captured his heart. Our heroine is oblivious to Mikael’s attempts at a slow seduction, and in this, she is the last to realize that Mikael is the man offering her a happily ever after. With another ancient forming his own army of newly born vampires, Mikael and Avery soon realize they are connected together at an even deeper alliance.
The relationship between Avery and Mikael is one of immediate attraction but Avery wants nothing to do with a long-term relationship. Mikael’s dragon knows that Avery is their mate but convincing Avery is a slow process in that life is about to spiral out of control. The $ex scenes are passionate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and supernatural secondary and supporting characters including New Orlean’s alpha wolf King, and the phoenix Aurora; lion shifter Axel, tiger twins Harlow and Brielle, Lola,; half demon Cynara; vampires Justus, Ingrid and Claudine;Rhys, Dallas; dragon healer Greer; Mikael’s brothers Cas and Ivyn; Avery’s human brothers Anthony and Riel, and their father Shep, his wife Lindsay, powerful vampire Magnus; and dragonlings Hunter and Willow. King and Aurora’s story line is next.
ANCIENT ENFORCER is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and revenge; a story of power and control; tragedy and triumph. The premise is moving and edgy; the romance is encouraging yet intense; the characters are numerous, energetic and spirited. ANCIENT ENFORCER is a wonderful and startling addition to Reus’ ANCIENTS RISING paranormal series.
Avery was a house flipper before the fall and has valuable construction experience. She’s been working with King to help rebuild housing and make sure everybody has the shelter that they need as they rebuild New Orleans. When King asks her to take in three dragon shifters who are new to town, she is hesitant, but as she gets to know them she agrees and appreciates the help that they offer on her job sites. She notices the oldest of the brothers, Mikael, but thinks he’s probably more heartbreak than he’s worth.
Mikael lost everything thousands of years ago and went into hibernation. Now that he’s awake again the world has changed and he finds himself living and attracted to a human female. He can’t help the growing feeling of protectiveness he feels towards her however he also finds because she’s human she is far more vulnerable than he is used to. When a danger from her past emerges, they find they must work together to keep her family together while also exploring the attraction building between them and Mikael’s desire to claim her.
Mikael is protective of his family and those he holds dear. Despite coming out of hibernation he quickly learns how to maneuver in modern society, though admittedly the world is not quite as modern as had The Fall not happened.
Avery is sweet and strong. Working in a male-dominated field she learned long ago how to stand up for herself and how to get things done. As she welcomes the dragons into her house she helps to build a new sort of blended family among her own brothers and these dragon brothers.
As they get to know each other Mikael is sure Avery is his mate however he isn’t sure how to convince her of that fact as well as introduce her into the differences between a human male and a dragon male. As a result this book feels like a slow burn even though their relationship is building along the way. Because Avery is unfamiliar with shifter traditions there is a lot for her to learn.
I found myself quickly pulled into this post-apocalyptic New Orleans. Reconnecting with this group of shifters, witches, and humans was a great distraction from the present. This book came up in my reading list at the perfect time and was exactly what I needed for a little reading refresh. I love all the little connections in the background and particularly enjoyed watching King and Aurora continue to circle around each other. I cannot wait for their story, to see what is really building between them.
Ancient Enforcer, Book 3 in Katie Reus’ Ancients Rising series features two of my favorite things in romance – the friends to lovers’ trope and paranormal romance with dragon shifters, werewolves, vampires, and witches – so I get the best of both worlds with this read. It did not disappoint. Ancient Enforcer is a sexy, steamy, and sweet romantic paranormal romance with a captivating blend of suspense, action, and horror. Though, for most of the first half it mostly focuses on the development of the friendship between Mikael, a dragon shapeshifter and former general, and Avery, a human house flipper into a sexual relationship before the suspense or action kicks in – not that I’m complaining. The territory Alpha asks Avery to shelter Mikael and his brothers as they adjusted to life after a group of dragon shifters tried to take over the world, causing untold destruction.
Avery’s strong, confident, secure, and happy with her life. However, her parent’s relationship issues and the pain and heartbreak it caused her, and her brothers, left Avery believing fairy tales and happily ever after weren’t real. And that was a problem because every moment she spent with Mikael, it grew harder for her to deny how drawn to him she was and resist how her heart had wanted nothing more than to have a chance with him. Especially, as they became friends and he and his brothers became like family to her and her brothers. As she saw how he cared for her brothers like they were his own and cared for her as no other had before. Nevertheless, she was determined to remain friends with him. Better that than to be hurt when he found a beautiful dragon mate. In war, as a general Mikael had lost so much, clan members, family, and honor in battle. Hardened and jaded by those loses, he should stay away from Avery who is the opposite of everything he’s known and should want – a human, kind, gentle, generous, sweet. But he knew almost from the moment he had first met her that he wanted her to be his, and he wanted no other woman. The hard part was convincing her of this. Particularly, when she was so unwilling to believe that he could genuinely want a future with her.
Mikael’s and Avery’s relationship development is shown through a combination of the present and flashbacks to the past so we can see the progression of them becoming friends and their growing attraction. Their relationship and interactions are sexy and sweet. Avery and Mikael are nicely developed, relatable, and likeable characters who you can’t help but root for and wish the best for, which increases the tension and conflict when her past comes back to create danger for them. While we do see interactions among the two sibling groups and characters from the previous books, not much time is spent on developing Avery’s and Mikael’s brothers outside of their connection to them and importance to the story.
The world-building and description is vibrant and detailed, bringing the story, characters, and action scenes to life. With each new book Reus opens up the Ancients Rising universe a bit more, bringing in new characters, villains, threats, and challenges for the heroes and heroines, and increasing the stakes. This novel was a bit lighter in tone than the previous novels while veering more into the horror genre with some elements of the story, and it works for this story and the universe. Both readers who love this series and readers who love sexy paranormal romance with a great blend of action, suspense, and horror won’t be able to resist Ancient Enforcer.
Mikael totally won my heart. A dragon shifter who lost many of his family thousands of years ago and recently emerged from hibernation with his two younger brothers. He has awakened to a new world and is trying to settle into the now combined supernatural and human world in New Orleans.
Avery is a human construction forewoman helping to rebuild the city along with her two younger brothers. And the Alpha, King has asked her to help house and guide Mikael and his brothers.
Eventually, this group becomes a self-made family. Mikael is broody, quiet, loyal, and protective. Avery is sweet, happy, independent, and caring. Mikael is sure from the beginning that Avery is his mate, but he is really slow on making a move and afraid of scaring her off. Avery put him in the friend-zone early on. She has made it clear she has trust issues and is not looking for a boyfriend. Even if she is having feelings, she does not think a simple human woman is good enough for a dragon shifter.
But when a new threat is discovered and their pasts come back to haunt them, they will have to stick together not only for their family, but also for the community at large.
Will they lose each other before they even have a chance to share their feelings?
It is a sweet, suspenseful, paranormal romance full of shifters, mayhem, and magic. These two are wonderful together and really have some challenges to get through. The villains in this one have some scary stuff in their arsenal and it introduces even more of this supernatural world. I really liked both of their brothers and their strong relationships. It also brings back other characters from this series to help along the way. I am so excited that King and Aurora finally get a story next in Ancient Vendetta!
Who wouldn’t like any fantasy story with Dragons. Mikael and his brothers woken from a great hibernation are lodged with Avery and her brothers by King the local Alpha to learn about this new world. Mikael knows Avery is his mate immediately but Avery is a strong willed feisty woman used to looking after herself and her family she is not looking for a boyfriend! Mikael is not the only Ancient brought to this time and he will meet again the murderer of his parents. This book reads at a great pace with plenty of suspense. There is plenty of lighthearted moments with dragonling Hunter who you will want to adopt. Mikael and Avery have good chemistry and will have you rooting for them. I was given an arc of this book by Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This whole series is actiony, steamy fun. I love Katie Reus's style, it's warm and comforting and we all need some warmth and escape right now. The dragons continue to be red hot and engaging and the heroines continue to be relatable and strong. The original series and this spinoff is really entertaining and fun, highly recommend if you want a distraction into some well crafted, light PNR.
Katie Reus’s writing is magnetic. It draws you in from the first page to the last page and Ancient Enforcer is no different. I love everything about this book. The plot has so many twists and turns. The romance is smoking. (See what I did there?) And the family dynamic between Mikael and his brothers and Avery and her brothers warms my heart. All of them living together is amazing. I can’t wait to read King and Aurora’s book next!
*Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the copy of this book. All opinions are my own.*
The third book in Ancients Rising, Ancient Enforcer, was an engaging read. The character interaction was edgy and entertaining, and the story was dynamic and intriguing. I would recommend this book and series to readers you are sure to love it as much as I did.
Once again, I have started a series without reading the first few books, and once again, I have gotten lucky enough to find an author who has pity on absent minded readers like myself. Even if you haven't read the previous books, Katie Reus is kind enough to give enough of a recap so you can understand what has already happened and become invested in characters, both new and old. I loved all the side characters, the cute baby dragons (I want one!), and the romance was causing steam to come off my tablet's screen! Now all I need to do is go back and read the previous two books, and I'll be all caught up.
Former general Mikael was asleep for thousands of years, in a voluntary sleep after losing his clan and family. In a brand new world, he is reliant on others to guide the way, and the woman assigned to help is a human female, Avery, who lives with her two brothers in a New Orleans home. Avery is a house flipper and fiercely protective of those she loves, and in just a short time, Mikael and his two younger brothers are included in that mix. However, she's hesitant to give her heart to Mikael after watching her parents' marriage crash and burn. It's going to take everything Mikael has in him to convince Avery to be his mate, while also making sure she's safe from new threats that want nothing more than to harm Mikael and everyone he loves.
This was a quick read for me, mainly because I was speeding through it so I could see how it ended. It wasn't a book I could easily put down. Mikael was so in love with Avery, knowing she was his mate but not being able to do much about it. Trying to be respectful and keep his distance, while Avery was doing the same thing. Once they realized they both had feelings for each other, things steamed up quickly, and it became apparent that things wouldn't stay casual between them for long. While I wish we had gotten more appearances from Mikael's dragon, I still felt very connected to his character and his dragon. Their brothers were also great additions to the story, and I found myself as protective of them as Mikael and Avery were by the end of the book.
I look forward to reading the other books in this series!

"Ancient Enforcer" is the high energy, action packed third installment of the "Ancients Rising" series by Katie Reus. Readers finally get the story that has built for two books between, Avery, a human, and Mikael, an ancient dragon shifter. You do not need to read the other books in the series to enjoy this story but some characters do carry over for book to book. Reus had introduce Avery and Mikael in "Ancient Protector", the first book in the series. I had been eagerly anticipating this story. The mystery surrounding these two characters kept me intrigued and Reus did not disappoint.
After The Fall, Avery found herself as the manager of a crew of construction workers, building and rebuilding homes for the displaced citizens of New Orleans. The work was familiar to her as it was something she had done before the fall. Having lived in New Orleans her whole life, she had always been aware of supernatural creatures.
Mikael and his brothers found themselves in New Orleans after The Fall. Since they had no family and no clan, they had no where better to be. After presenting themselves to the local Alpha, King, they were "assigned' to live and work with Avery and her two brothers. Mikael senses immediately that Avery is his mate. Avery's jaded past makes it difficult for her to form committed relationships and open herself up to love. When Avery's past shows up on her doorstep the couple find themselves not only battling her demons, but his too.
I discovered this series just after the new year and quickly fell in love with the characters and the world that Reus has built Because the characters appear in the other books the reader gets to know them and their cute quirks. I eagerly anticipate each persons story and will read each installment.
I can't recommend 'Ancient Enforcer' and the whole "Ancients Rising' series enough.
The world as we know it is gone. Now people are aware there are supernaturals living among them. In New Orleans King is the Alpha. He's hard at work rebuilding the city. Avery is a human female helping with building housing. She's a hard worker who wants to help. She's well liked by all so King asks her to help an Ancient Dragon adjust to this new world. Mikael and his younger brothers are going to stay with Avery. The group bonds and becomes a family. Things heat up quickly when Mikael and his dragon find that Avery is his mate. Their attraction is powerful and filled with passion and caring. However, a deadly enemy is determined to destroy them all. Can they escape from his evil? I loved this book. Ancient Enforcer is filled with suspense and nonstop action plus the romance between Avery and Mikael is so intense. I feel for the powerful dragon! Avery is determined not fall in love. I couldn't put this book down. I needed to know how their story would end. I liked all the characters. I fell in love with the young dragon, Hunter. He had King wound around his little finger. It was wonderful to catch up with the supernaturals of New Orleans. Katie Reus is a talented author. I enjoy her writing and can't wait for more. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
I'm always happy to find a new PNR series featuring dragon shifters and am looking forward to going back and reading the previous books in the series. Avery was a strong, caring human female, trying to keep her younger brothers safe and navigate a post-Fall New Orleans after the world was devastated by rogue dragon attacks. Luckily for her, she'd already been working with supernaturals prior to the Fall, and had a strong relationship with the new Alpha wolf of New Orleans, who'd taken over and was trying to protect the remaining population. When he asks Avery to take in a couple of ancient dragon shifter brothers who've just woken from hibernation and need help integrating into the modern world, she doesn't hesitate to open her house and heart to them. Mikael is the oldest brother, takes one look at Avery and his dragon self immediately roars "MINE". At first, she friendzones him, but he slowly starts to figure out how to navigate dating, and eventually claiming, the woman of his heart. There's plenty of action, plenty of dragon shifter antics, a bit of alpha chest thumping (although never taken to obnoxious extremes) and an adorable, intelligent dragonling.
This book is the third in a spinoff series to the author's Darkness series. Although I read the first couple of books in the previous series quite awhile ago, I didn't remember that many details. I found that I was able to follow the action in this book with very little difficulty so I feel like it would work very well as a standalone. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
When the past comes to wreck havoc in both Avery & Mikael's lives, they work together to protect and rescue each other from the dangers presented. Katie Reus' Ancients Rising series is set in New Orleans rebuilding from the world being badly damaged at the end of her Darkness series when shifters were outed to the world. I really enjoy the teamwork we see as the city's Alpha King, a wolf shifter, gets everyone to help each other rebuild their lives. This third story centers around Avery Cortez, a human house flipper ,and Mikael, an ancient dragon general-enforcer & his two younger brothers, that have recently awakened from hibernation. Avery's past comes to visit as well as Mikael's and they must work together to defeat the ancient evil.
The story opens with King asking Avery to house Mikael & his two brothers Casimir and Ivyn in her home. Given the dragon shifters have been asleep for centuries they need some guidance as they acclimate to the modern world. Avery has two younger brothers, Riel & Anthony living with her as well. When Avery's mom died of cancer and Avery took over her brother's care as their Dad left the family to marry Avery's best friend Lindsay when their mom was sick. Dad, Shep comes to visit after having no association for 6 years, asking Avery to put in a word with King to get Shep better living conditions. Mikael makes sure Shep leaves when it's clear he's not welcome by any of them. Avery later runs into Lindsay as a vampire and her Dad's now ex. As Mikael slowly works on getting Avery comfortable with him he's come to realize she's his mate. Then another foe hits New Orleans. Newly made vampires are killing humans when they feed. And an ancient foe of Mikael's clan shows up to make things even more dangerous. The weaving of all these story threads makes a fabulous adventure.

Ancient Enforcer, a paranormal romance by Katie Reus, is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The third in a series, it can be read just fine as a standalone, though it might be helpful to read the first two books to fully understand the setting and some of the supporting characters. At least I assume so; I haven't read the other books in the series yet.
Mikael is a dragon shifter just out of a few millennia of hibernation. Avery and her two brothers, humans who are "in" with New Orleans supernatural community, take in Mikael and his two brothers as boarders at the request of NOLA's Alpha (a wolf shifter still awaiting his book). It is a few months after "the Fall," a presumably apocalyptic event that changed the fabric of society and brought supernaturals into the limelight (and into power, it seems). The world described in this novel doesn't seem particularly awful though; there are references to things that aren't widely available (money, decent cell service, alcohol), but Avery and friends don't really seem too bothered by it. Plus, the showers are still hot.
As is typical with shifter stories, Mikael knows almost instantly that Avery is his mate, but she takes some convincing. Throw in an old nemesis of Mikael and a relatively new nemesis of Avery and you have some intrigue and danger.
The characters in this story are all adorable. Mikael is so devoted to Avery, and she is equal parts sweet and competent. Even just a few pages in, I just wanted to be friends with the gang. And I want my own dragonling.
There were parts of the story, however, that seemed rushed or were explained away a little clumsily. With such a large cast of characters and a plot that depends on a cataclysmic event like "the Fall," a prologue that summarizes the situation and maybe she if the key players would have been very helpful. Also, I'm very willing to buy into paranormality, but without the background, the parts of this story that dealt with realms of hell were distracting to me.
Overall though, this story is a fun and fast read. It is well written and thoughtful, and I would read the other books in the series in a heartbeat.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!
This is the 3rd book in the series and just as much of an adventure as the first two. We have met Avery before and we also get to see quite a few of the familiar characters in New Orleans. If you are looking for a unique paranormal with not only dragon shifters but just about every other creature you are familiar with-- this series is for you.
Mikael is a VERY old dragon. He and his brothers wake to a world in chaos. Avery is trying to help them get acclimated while they determine what role they may play in helping the Alpha of New Orleans.
Story lines continue through the books. There is a vampire problem that they are trying to get a handle one. Adorable dragonlings in this book as well.
I can't wait for the next book!

In a world almost destroyed by the supernatural. A new world is being built with humans and supernatural creatures working together. The ending of hibernation of Dragon shifter Mikael leads to he and his brothers being placed with human Avery. As a respected human in charge of the reconstruction programme Avery is a strong independent woman who doesn't believe in fairytales. Mikael is an ancient warrior who recognises Avery as his mate andvhas to learn the modern ways to woo the woman he loves. However they both have enemies from their pasts who unite against them. Can they overcome the past and find a way to a future together? This is a brilliantly woven story and I love the character development although it is full of the supernatural this isn't a damsel in distress rescued by stronger warriors. There are strong humans and it really feels as though the theme of respect and working together is a strong one which I enjoyed alongside the passionate love story.
