It is a simple tale, on the surface. Akaky Akakievich (literally "Harmless Son-of-Harmless," but which might sound like "Poopy Pooperson” to a child), an impoverished civil servant and scrivener, must maintain his respectability by possessing a decent overcoat. How he gains a new overcoat, loses that overcoat, and seeks to have the overcoat restored to him constitutes the whole of our story.

Recently I read The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri about two generations of an Indian immigrant family to the United States. The main theme of the novel was that the father Ashoke was reading The Overcoat on a train journey. The train derailed and this slim book saved his life. Indebted to the book, Ashoke decided to name his newborn son Nikhil but gave him the nickname Gogol, after the Russian writer whose works he adored. It is in this regard, that I chose to read The Overcoat to get a feel for the story that had such a central place in the book.

Nicolai Gogol lived a brief existence from 1809-1852, primarily in Petersburg, Russia, with a few sojourns to Rome. Gogol was a gifted writer who influenced Dostoevsky and Turgenev among others. Sent away to boarding school at the age of ten, Gogol lived most of his life away from his father, and did not have other family to speak of. As a result, he had compassion for the less fortunate of people, and this becomes evident in his famous short story.

Gogol got the idea for The Overcoat at a party with friends when he heard of a civil servant who desires a new gun but could not afford one and saved money in order to do so. Thus, the idea for Akaky Akakyevich and his overcoat was born. Akakyevich survived on a salary of 450 rubles a year and could barely afford food or clothes. He was happy at his job as a copier and had no desire to advance in his profession or to marry. Living in a tiny apartment in the poor side of town, Akakyevich brought home extra work and saved rubles in a tin in order to have the means to afford repairs to his clothing.

One year, his Overcoat was worn beyond repair, and Akaky Akakyevich saved rubles in his tin for a new coat. He convinced his tailor Petrovich in a drunken moment to sew him a new one for only 80 rubles and by doing so was able to survive for another winter. Despite his joy in receiving the new coat, Akakyevich's moment is short lived; however, because others coveted his coat and stole it from him. This fleeting moment sets up a memorable denouement that appears to be out of a folk tale.

I thought The Overcoat was straight forward and accessible to read. I enjoyed the message that Gogol sent to his readers to have compassion on others regardless of one's station in life, and was especially moved when Akakyevich's colleagues took up collection for a new Overcoat for him. This is the second short story I have read by a Russian master this year, and I am glad to see that the stories are folktales in nature and easy to read. I hope stories as The Overcoat lead me to read some of the longer, classic Russian literature, and am glad that Jhumpa Lahiri's novel inspired me to read the works of Nicolai Gogol. ...more

In my preparation for reading The Metamorphosis, I did some background reading of critical analyses, including this one by Vladimir Nabokov (thanks to Cecily for the link!), where he does a fantastic dissection (heh) of The Metamorphosis but also talks about Gogol's "The Carrick" (aka "The Cloak" or "The Overcoat") and tosses off wonderful ideas like this:

And then there's this haunting quote, attributed to Fyodor Dostoevsky: "We all come out from Gogol's 'Overcoat'." (ETA: Even months later, every time I think about this story, that quote comes to mind.) So off I went to read Nicolai Gogol's short story.

Akaky Akakievich is an absurd, pathetic figure of a man. His name would translate as something very nondescript like "John Johnson," except you also have this deliberate allusion to "kaka" (or caca = feces) in his name; one review site suggested you think of him as Poopy McPooperson. He is a "titular councillor" (read: minor official) who in fact does nothing except act as a human photocopier, all day, every day, for very low pay. He even takes his copy work home with him in the evenings. His only joy in life is derived from his copy work. Even being asked to make the most minor changes to the original version throws him into a tizzy. His co-workers make fun of him, but other than a pitiful protest of "Leave me alone! Why do you insult me?," he quietly carries on.

Until one day, when he realizes that his overcoat has become so threadbare that it won't keep off the cold St. Petersburg winter. After a few skirmishes with his tailor about whether the old coat can be patched up or not, he caves and agrees to save up money for a new coat, which will cost like 20% of his annual wages. Gradually Akaky gets more and more excited about his new coat. And when he finally gets the finished overcoat -- lined with cat fur because marten fur is too expensive (sorry to my feline-loving friends!) -- it causes a sensation in his workplace.

Of course, this being 19th century Russian literature, you know it's going to go south for poor Akaky. (view spoiler) But the surprise for me was the ending. (view spoiler)

I'm still a little bemused by the unexpected turn from existentialist dark humor to gothic at the end. It didn't quite feel integral to me, Nabokov's inspired praises notwithstanding. So, four stars from me, even though I actually though it was an amusing ending and I liked seeing a certain character get his comeuppance.

This little book tells the story of Akakiy Akakievitch, a certain official in a certain department where nobody showed him any sign of respect. He was laughed at by his co-workers. تتردد مقولة أن الأدب الروسي في القرن التاسع عشر خرج من تحت معطف جوجول. وهي مقولة صحيحة إلى حدٍ كبير، ولكن ما انا متأكد منه يقيناً أنني أدين بالفضل لهذه "النوفيلا" - التي قرأتها في بداية سنين المراهقة وأثناء دراستي الجامعية وفي شبابي وللآن دون ان تفقد قدرتها على التأثير في وإمتاعي - بحبي للأدب القصصي والروائي الجاد عامةً وللأدب الروسي في القرن التاسع عشر خاصةً.

I first heard of this story while reading Jhumpa Lahiri's 2003 fantastic novel The Namesake. Since then, I've been curious to read it and I finally had a chance to do it. (If you Google "The Namesake and The Overcoat", you'll find plenty of posts analyzing the connection between the two).

هذا العنوان ليس من وحى خيالى فهو عنوان بتصرف لأحد مقالات الدكتور أحمد خالد توفيق – تذكرته وأنا أقرأ هذه القصة الرائعة - التى يحكى فيها مأساة ومعاناة ولعنة الوضع الوسط بشكل عام فكما قال أسلافنا المصريون وسامحونى فى هذا الاقتباس إن لم يكن مناسب لأسماع البعض:

هكذا هى طبيعة الطبقة الوسطى تجاهد كى تبقى على حالها ولا تنزلق إلى غياهب الطبقة الأدنى وتحاول أن تحسن من أوضاعها ولكن هيهات لن تتركها الحكومات على ما هى عليه ستسحقها كلياً ستفرمها فرماً وتمزقها إرباً لن تفلح كل محاولات هذه الطبقة فى التشبث بوضعها الحالى ولا تحسينه فستسوء الأمور أكثر فأكثر – فعمليات تحرير سعر الصرف ورفع أسعار الوقود ورفع الدعم عن الكهرباء التى تجتاح عالمنا العربى اليوم – حتماً ستفضى بهذه الطبقة فى نهاية الأمر إلى طبقة أدنى ولهذا مخاطره فكما يقول الدكتور توفيق فى روايته الأفضل والأكمل يوتوبيا أن الطبقة الوسطى التى تلعب فى المجتمع دور قضبان الجرافيت فى المفاعل النووى .. أى أنها تبطئ التفاعل لولاها لانفجر المفاعل .. فمجتمع بلا طبقة وسطى هو مجتمع قابل للانفجار
كانت هذه هى النقطة الأولى التى أود الحديث عنها أما النقطة الثانية وهى من وحى مقال الدكتور خالد توفيق أيضاً عن حماية الطبقة الوسطى فمن يحمى الطبقة الوسطى إذن .. فمن البديهى والملاحظ بشدة أن أعضاء الطبقات الدنيا فى المجتمع يحمى بعضهم بعضاً:
عندما يقع تهديد على أحد سكان العشوائيات فإنه يصرخ مناديًا (سوكة) و(شيحة) وسرعان ما يبرز له عشرون بلطجيًا يحملون ما تيسر من (سنج) وماء نار وكلاب شرسة .. هذه هي الحماية الحقة
كما يشترى أعضاء الطبقات العليا فى مجتمعنا أمانهم وأمنهم وحراستهم فتجد عيسوى بيه رمز الطبقة العليا فى مقال توفيق عندما يشك فى شخص ما رأه من خلال شاشات مراقبة شركته أو قصره أو فيلته الفاخرة:
بينما عندما يشك (عيسوى) بيه في شيء .. فإن البودي جارد صلع الرءوس ذوي السترات السود الذين يدسون سماعات في آذانهم يبرزون لك ليقولوا إن الباشا يأمرك بالابتعاد عن هذا الشارع
أما عن الطبقة الوسطى حدث ولا حرج فلا أمان لهم ولا أمن ولا معين لهم إلا الله فى هذه الدنيا:
فمن يحمي ابن الطبقة الوسطى ؟.. لا أحد ..
بعدما سمعت عن ماساة الطبقة الوسطى هل ستجرب ما فعله الصحفى البريطانى فى مقال الدكتور خالد توفيق هكذا قرر أن يطلق العنان لجنونه ويجرب الحد الأقصى من كل شيء : يرتحل إلى أبرد مكان في العالم في سيبيريا وأسخن مكان في العالم في أثيوبيا .. يجرب أكثر البلدان جفافًا وأكثرها رطوبة .. أكثرها ارتفاعًا وأكثرها انخفاضًا .. وهكذا .... أم ستقرر أن تنتهى حياتك وأنت تقف على درجات السلم تنظر إلى الأعلى بندم وحسرة وإلى الأسفل بشفقة هذا هو خيارك يا صديقى.
قد تجد هذه المراجعة بعيداة تماماً عن صلب القصة لكن صدقنى عندما تعود لقصة أكاكى أكاكوفيتش ستجد تطابق مذهل بين هذا الرجل وأعضاء الطبقة الوسطى أحلامهم وطموحاتهم .. الفارق الواضح بين أحلامهم وأدواتهم .. فقد تكون إمكانياتك ومؤهلاتك أقل مما تحلم به فستظل عالقاً فى أحلامك .. وقد تكون إمكانياتك ومؤهلاتك أكبر مما تستطيع أن تمنحك الدنيا أياه فستظل طريح الطبقة الوسطى إلى نهاية عمرك.

The Overcoat tells the story of life and death of one Akaky Akakievich, a government official in a certain department. The first part of the story tells us the personality of the Akaky and his poor living conditions. His job though satisfying to him doesn't earn enough to keep him well clothed and bred. He is extremely reserved and becomes a constant subject of ridicule. Through the first half of the story, Gogol places Akaky well in reader’s hearts arousing their compassion. The first half en The Overcoat tells the story of life and death of one Akaky Akakievich, a government official in a certain department. The first part of the story tells us the personality of the Akaky and his poor living conditions. His job though satisfying to him doesn't earn enough to keep him well clothed and bred. He is extremely reserved and becomes a constant subject of ridicule. Through the first half of the story, Gogol places Akaky well in reader’s hearts arousing their compassion. The first half ends with Akaky through so much of labour and with many sacrifices becoming a proud owner of an overcoat. The second part of the story is where the reader learns the misfortune of Akaky as he is robbed of his overcoat and all his efforts at recovering his lost property is rendered futile. His disappointment and exposure to ill weather in the absence of an overcoat sees him to an early grave. But the story doesn’t end there. It becomes better for Akaky comes back to seek justice and takes revenge from those who had failed to help him.

This little story tells many things: It exposes the poverty stricken lives of middle class working people; it shows the uncompassionate and bullying nature of the certain humans; it brings to light the inefficiency and unjust and unsatisfactory conduct of government bureaucrats of Russia under the Imperial regime; and finally through Akaky’s ghost haunting the officials is hinting at that someday the tolerance for such governance might end in a catastrophe (as was seen years later).

Gogol is said to be a pioneer in realistic writing. His writing as is portrayed in The Overcoat is touched on real characters in the society and real themes that concern the humans and society. Dostoevsky once said that “We all come from Gogol’s Overcoat” and this is very good indication that how influential and great Gogol’s work had been on Russian literature.

There is an easy grace in his writing which makes it undemanding for the reader. This is one of the best attributes in his writing. And his direct and at times sardonic writing is quite appealing. It is not right to draw comparison between the literary masters especially from different literary traditions, but so far the writing is concerned, I couldn’t help comparing his writing with that of Charles Dickens and Oscar Wild.

Overall, I enjoyed this short work. And although personally I cannot put Gogol in the same line with Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, I do like his style. ...more

It been a long time since I saw the movie 'The Namesake'. It's a beautiful movie starring Irfan Khan and Tabu. In the movie, Irfan Khan named his son Gogol for his favorite writer and mentioned many times "The world is like Gogol's overcoat".

At that point in my life, my lack of interest in reading stifled me from finding and reading this story. Finally after so many years I came to read this and I regret so much, not have read it till now.

يا لهذا الـ "أكاكي" وما فعله بي هو ومعطفه؟؟!!

معطف رثّ أم إنسانيّة رثّة مليئة بالتعالي والفوقية؟؟!

لم أعرف هل أتعاطف مع "أكاكي" ومع بؤسه ومع (حروف جرّه)...أم أسخط على سلبيته تجاه واقع حياته؟؟!!

أحب الروايات القليلة بعدد صفحاتها..السلسة بلغتها..الكثيفة بأحداثها..العميقة بمعانيها ومدلولاتها...الساخرة والغنية بالخيال المدهش...وأستمتع بإعادة قراءة بعض صفحاتها لأجد دوما الجديد فيها...كهذه تماما

وهذه القصة هي مشجب علق عليها غوغول معطفا، خبأ في جيوبه قوة السلطة والخضوع باتجا

آآآآهٍ من أحلام المقهورين...تقلص الحلم ليصبح "معطفا"...!!!

ملخص القصة...
"أكاكي" موظف رثّ المعطف والشخصية، يعمل نسّاخا لجمال خطه، ويعيش حياته بروتين قاتل، وكان قانعا خانعا لما هو عليه، ولا يريد أي ترقية في العمل تغيّر من وضعه، ويقابله الموظفون باستخفاف واستهزاء دائم لا يعمل أبدا على دفعه...تلف معطفه وأصبح من الصعب إصلاحه كما قال له خياطه، وكان لا بد من معطف جديد...وكان هذا المعطف كمشروع العمر بالنسبة له،ادخر لأجله طويلا، وظلّ لعدة أشهر يذهب يوميّاً إلى الأسواق لدراسة أسعار القماش، إلى أن تأمّن المبلغ وتحققّت أمنيته، بعد طول تقتير، بتفصيل معطف جديد..ليسرق منه بعد ساعات وتضيع جهود استرداده هباء، بل تكون سببا في موته."

غوغول ذهب بعيدا وهو يصف موظف الدرجة التاسعة "أكاكي"...حتى جعلني رغم سخطي على ضعفه،أتعاطف معه...وأشعر بفرحته الغامرة بمعطفه الجديد الذي كان هبة لم يتخيلها يوما:

( كان أكاكي أكاكيفيتش يسير في أشد مشاعره ابتهاجا واحتفالا. وكان يحس في كل ثانية من الدقيقة أن على كتفيه معطفه الجديد.. وضحك بسخرية عدة مرات خلسة من فرط سروره الداخلي..)

وجعلني أشعر بكل إحباطه لما سرق معطفه بعد ساعات قليلة من فرحته به:

(وبعد بضع دقائق صحا على نفسه واستوى على قدميه. ولكن لم يعد أحد موجودا لقد أحس أن الجو بارد وأن المعطف غير موجود فجعل يصرخ..ولكن بدا أن الصوت لايبلغ أطراف الساحة فانطلق يركض مستميتا دون أن يكف عن الصراخ)

وجعلني أشعر بكل بؤسه لما قتل "الجنرال" حلمه باسترداد معطفه، الذي جاع ليوفر جزءا من ثمنه...وقتله بصراخه في وجهه والذي أفقده قوّته...وكان سببا في موته

غوغول كما أبدع في اختزال وجع الإنسانية وقهر الإنسان في صفحات...أبدع في الخاتمة...ليجعل روح أكاكي تهوى الانتقام من كل الظلم وتبحث عن الخلاص بسلب الناس معاطفهم...وما ارتاحت تلك الروح إلا لما سلبت الجنرال معطفه وأذاقته بعضا من الرعب الذي سببه لأكاكي.

أخيرا
لا عجب إن قيل أن الرواية الروسيّة خرجت من معطف غوغول

Αυτές τις τόσο απλές λέξεις χρησιμοποιεί ο ήρωας μας , Ακάκιος Ακακίεβιτς Τσαρουχόφ, δημόσιος υπάλληλος στην τελευταία βαθμίδα της ιεραρχίας, προς τους συναδέλφους του που επιμένουν να τον κοροϊδεύουν . Γιατί; Μα γιατί μπορούν. Γιατί ο Γκόγκολ ήθελε να δημιουργήσει έναν χαρακτήρα τόσο ευάλωτο και ταυτόχρονα τόσο δυνατό που παρά τις συστηματικές κοροϊδίες που δέχεται από τους συναδέλφους του, εκείνος συνεχίζει απτόητος να κάνει την δουλειά του με προσήλωση, συνε

Ένα καθήκον που το επιτελεί σχεδόν ψυχαναγκαστικά. Γιατί οι αδύναμοι άνθρωποι χρειάζονται από κάπου να πιαστούν ακόμα και αν αυτό είναι η αντιγραφή χαρτιών.

Το Παλτό δημοσιεύτηκε το 1842 και παραμένει τόσο επίκαιρο που σε κάνει να αναρωτιέσαι για την τύχη της ανθρωπότητας. Σε 85 μόνο σελίδες φανερώθηκε μπροστά μου ένας από τους πιο συγκινητικούς ήρωες της λογοτεχνίας. Ένα ανθρωπάκι δειλό και ταυτόχρονα θυμωμένο, που όμως έχει αποδεχτεί την ζωή του , την μιζέρια και την φτώχεια του. Την έχει αποδεχτεί σε τέτοιο σημείο που ακόμα κι όταν ένας καινούριος συνάδελφος μετανιώνει που τον κοροϊδεύει και τον αποκαλεί τελικά «αδελφό μου», ο Ακάκιος δεν το αντιλαμβάνεται. Όχι γιατί είναι χαζός, αλλά γιατί ποτέ του δεν είχε γίνει δέκτης κάποιας μορφής συμπάθειας για να μπορέσει να την αναγνωρίσει. Όλα αυτά μέχρι τη στιγμή που αποφασίζει να φτιάξει ένα καινούριο παλτό και γεμίζει ελπίδα για το καλύτερο. Όσο αφηρημένο ή ανόητο μπορεί να ακούγεται αυτό «το καλύτερο».

Δεν θα σας πω περισσότερα για την ιστορία, αλλά θα σας εξομολογηθώ ότι το Παλτό είναι από τα πιο συγκινητικά βιβλία που διάβασα όχι μόνο για το 2018 αλλά γενικά. Η ανάπτυξη του ήρωα είναι αριστοτεχνικά δοσμένη, η κοινωνική αδικία πνίγει τον ίδιο τον αναγνώστη ενώ η ειρωνεία του Γκόγκολ προς την εξουσία, προσωποπαγώς αλλά και σαν ιδέα, χτυπάει σε καίρια σημεία και ισορροπεί άψογα ανάμεσα στη χιουμοριστική διάθεση και την ειλικρινή θλίψη.

«Όλοι βγήκαμε από το Παλτό του Γκόγκολ», είχε πει ο Ντοστογιέφσκι για το συγκεκριμένο έργο. Κι εγώ θα συμφωνήσω απόλυτα μαζί του.

Σ.σ. Η επανακυκλοφορία του από τις εκδόσεις Πατάκης με την πολύ προσεγμένη εικονογράφηση, ήταν σίγουρα μία ευχάριστη έκπληξη. ...more

چقدر لذت بردم و شادم بخاطر گوش دادن به این داستان کوتاه 😊😊😊( اصولن نباید شاد باشم چون داستان ناتاونلی طنز نبود ،باتآلسو خیلی هم غم انگیز و مایوس کننده بود) ولی چون توی اتوبوس مشغول یک کار مفید جز بازی کردن کندیکراش شدم، به خودم افتخار میکنم و از این بابت شادم.

جميله رغم قسوتها .. عظيمه على قصرها .. عند حسن الظن و أكثر

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (Николай Васильевич Гоголь) was born in the Ukrainian Cossack village of Sorochyntsi, in Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire, present-day Ukraine. His mother was a descendant of Polish nobility. His father Vasily Gogol-Yanovsky, a descendant of Ukrainian Cossacks, belonged to the petty gentry, wrote poetry in Russian and Ukrainian, and was an amateur Ukrainian-langu Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (Николай Васильевич Гоголь) was born in the Ukrainian Cossack village of Sorochyntsi, in Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire, present-day Ukraine. In 1820 Gogol went to a school of higher art in Nizhyn and remained there until 1828. It was there that he began writing. Very early he developed a dark and secretive disposition, marked by a painful self-consciousness and boundless ambition. Equally early he developed an extraordinary talent for mimicry which later on made him a matchless reader of his own works.

In 1828, on leaving school, Gogol came to Petersburg. He had hoped for literary fame and brought with him a Romantic poem of German idyllic life – Ganz Küchelgarten. He had it published, at his own expense, under the name of "V. Alov." The magazines he sent it to almost universally derided it. He bought all the copies and destroyed them, swearing never to write poetry again.

Gogol was one of the first masters of the short story, alongside Alexander Pushkin, Prosper Mérimée, E. T. A. Hoffmann, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. He was in touch with the "literary aristocracy", and was taken up by Vasily Zhukovsky and Pyotr Pletnyov, and (in 1831) was introduced to Pushkin.

In 1831, he brought out the first volume of his Ukrainian stories (Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka), which met with immediate success. He followed it in 1832 with a second volume, and in 1835 by two volumes of stories entitled Mirgorod, as well as by two volumes of miscellaneous prose entitled Arabesques. At this time, Gogol developed a passion for Ukrainian history and tried to obtain an appointment to the history department at Kiev University. His fictional story Taras Bulba, based on the history of Ukrainian cossacks, was the result of this phase in his interests.

Between 1832 and 1836 Gogol worked with great energy, though almost all his work has in one way or another its sources in his four years of contact with Pushkin. Only after the presentation, on 19 April 1836, of his comedy The Government Inspector (Revizor) that he finally came to believe in his literary vocation.

From 1836 to 1848 he lived abroad, travelling throughout Germany and Switzerland, as well as spending the winter of 1836–1837 in Paris.

Pushkin's death produced a strong impression on Gogol. His principal work during years following Pushkin's death was the satirical epic Dead Souls. Concurrently, he worked at other tasks – recast Taras Bulba and The Portrait, completed his second comedy, Marriage (Zhenitba), wrote the fragment Rome and his most famous short story, The Overcoat.

After the triumph of Dead Souls, Gogol came to be regarded as a great satirist who lampooned the unseemly sides of Imperial Russia. However, Dead Souls was but the first part of a counterpart to The Divine Comedy. The first part represented the Inferno; the second part was to depict the gradual purification and transformation of the rogue Chichikov under the influence of virtuous publicans and governors – Purgatory.

His last years were spent in restless movement throughout the country. He intensified his relationship with a church elder, Matvey Konstantinovsky. He seems to have strengthened in Gogol the fear of perdition by insisting on the sinfulness of all his imaginative work. His health was undermined by exaggerated ascetic practices and he fell into a state of deep depression. On the night of 24 February 1852, he burned some of his manuscripts, which contained most of the second part of Dead Souls.
