This book surprised me with how much I enjoyed it! I was nervous going in because I thought it might be a little too YA for my tastes lately, but even though it’s definitely YA, I was still able to really enjoy it.
✅ I ALWAYS LOVE TOURNAMENT plot lines and this was no exception. The drama between contestants and watching the characters complete tasks is just always so fun to read about

So, I initially added this, excited because I thought - like A Deal With the Elf King - this was a separate series. 💙
But apparently, this is the third series set in the world of the Air Awakens, so onto the back burner this goes, until I read the rest in chronological order. 😭 So many interconnected series!!! 🙈

"She was the one in charge of her own destiny; and, now that she knew this feeling, Eira would never let anyone take it from her again."
A beautiful beginning to a high-stakes fantasy series that will have you rooting for the heroine from the very first page.

Devoured this in one day. This book is such a welcome treat to all Air Awakens fans, and I'm thankful to have received an ARC!

I loved being back in the world of Solaris with new characters and new types of magic. I love stories with tournaments and can’t wait to discover all of the secrets some of the characters are still keeping.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I jumped into this book completely blind. All I saw was the gorgeous cover, the author's name, and I knew I had to request being part of the street team. I have only read two books of the Air Awakens series, but the good thing about this book is that you don't have to have read the entire series to enjoy this. Although I know there are some name drops I didn't get that others will.

as a newbie to the air awakens universe, i was introduced to the magic system super quickly! i loved the worldbuilding and the range of characters, and i think the pacing was great!
short synopsis with no spoilers: eira landan is 18 years old, she is an apprentice at the tower of sorcerers, and she has an older brother, marcus, who is the "star child" but he takes care of eira a lot because eira accidentally did something bad three years prior. so the main plot is: there is a trial o ...more

This book is the first novel I have read by Elise Kova. I jumped into this book quite blind. I didn't know much about the plot, except that it took place in the Air Awakens Universe. What sold me to this book was that fans of The Legend of Korra and A Sorcery of Thorns would love it.
Where do I start?
While this book did start off slow for me, I was hooked around the 13%-20% point. I read this book rather quickly. I couldn't put it down because I was curious to find out what happens next. Kova's ...more

Re-review. I don't think my old review did the book and my feelings justice.
I don't think I can ever get tired of this world Kova continues to build. (Also that cover is just stunning. Like just jaw-dropping, mouth watering, gorgeous). Eira is jaded and spunky- the way I imagine any adult to be after growing up the life she did. Not unhappy, exactly, but not fulfilled either. A mouse scurrying after the shadow of her brother. Eira is somewhat of an outcast ...more

A Trial of Sorcerers is an action packed, angsty, mature dive back into the world of Air Awakens. The story follows Eira, an apprentice Water Runner, who has a dark past. Seeking to prove herself and to overcome her tarnished reputation, she enters the trial of sorcerers. The competition for glory and a chance to travel to the foreign lands of Meru take a high stakes turn that leaves everyone shaken but Eira is determined to leave her mark and to prove her naysayers wrong.

This was a FANTASTIC read. I've been meaning to read one of Elise Kova's books for a while, since I have so many on my TBR. This book is set in the Air Awakens universe, but it can be read without any prior knowledge (this was the case for me).
My favorite part of this book was the characters and their development. The main character, Eira, starts off as a self-conscious and alienated, but grows into a complex, strong individual, and it was a joy to read. The side characters we ...more

the cover mah dudes ❤️

If you’re a seasoned Elise Kova fan, which I consider myself as, you will love diving back into the Air Awakens world with this new series!
But even if you’re new to her books, this is a brilliant place to start! The characters are fun and relatable and leave you with just the right amount of questions to keep you intrigued 👀

A story of COURAGE, PAIN, LOYALTY and FRIENDSHIP! It was an amazing ride and you'll just want more! I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!
Eira is an waterrunner and a quite strong one at that! She has been belittled and kept behind ever since something happend 3 years ago. She blames herself for it and has a lot of guilt, but also there's a spark there to prove herself once and for all that's she's more than that event. And get this she has a special power and hears voices no one else hearing! People say She's ...more

A Trial of Sorcerers (A Trial of Sorcerers #1) by Elise Kova
★★★★☆
Eira Landan is an 18 years-old Waterrunner (meaning she can control water) that is tired of living in the shadows— the shadow of her older brother, of her magic’s whispers, and of the person she accidentally killed three years ago. She’s the most unwanted apprentice in the Tower of Sorcerers. Decided of taking the reins of her life back, she steps out and goes to compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms.

4.5/5 Wowzers! Ok so I was slightly hesitant because I did not love her Deal with the Elf King book, but clearly when Elise Kova wants to do her own thing, she shines. The downfall of that one was that it felt too much like it was trying to be an ACOTAR type book. The benefit of this one is that while it still draws on ya tropes (completely expected) this story feels like it’s all hers! It’s new and fresh in spite of what has come before.

Elise's storytelling shines through once again!
It took me until chapter 13 (of 39) to really start getting into this book. I couldn't get into the seeming indifference Eira's family displayed toward her and it felt forced. I'm sure some people have felt that way growing up, but I wasn't one and it made it hard to get lost in the story because of it. It just felt unnatural I think more so because there was a lot of telling of background, but little showing so I could identify with Eira and the u ...more

Every time I read one of Elise’s books I think, ok, this one is my favorite! Ugh I absolutely LOVED A Trial of Sorcerers. Eira, the main character, is strong and determined, but also quiet and bookish. And her best friend Alyss is the perfect friend, always supportive but also giving her great advice.
