The O'Connells #5

The Commitment

Rate this book
As far as Marcus O’Connell is concerned, his situation is perfect. He’s now living with the love of his life, Charlotte, and they’re serving as guardians for Eva, a little girl he rescued whose mother is serving time in prison for a crime of which, in Marcus’s mind, she was unfairly convicted.

But Charlotte isn’t on board with Marcus’s way of thinking. Because her divorce is now final, she wants—no, expects Marcus to want the same things she does. One of those things is a committed relationship, which, to Charlotte, means marriage. For Marcus, though, marriage is only a piece of paper, and it doesn’t have anything to do with commitment.

However, when circumstances change for Eva, whom they both love deeply, Marcus is forced to make some hard decisions to keep both Eva and Charlotte, and he questions his reasons for not wanting marriage. What will he need to do to keep the child he and Charlotte now consider theirs?

This book illustrates the need for open communication in a relationship. Marcus and Charlotte seem to be on different pages when it comes to marriage. Her divorce final, Charlotte had hoped that Marcus would propose right away. When he doesn’t, the tension between them mounts. Both are left to examine just how they see their future together. Their past would suggest that marriage was important to Marcus too... after all he refused to be with Charlotte while she was still married... but he doesn’t see why having marriage papers are important. His father leaving and never contacting them again might have something to do with his hesitation. Having young Eva (his legal ward) in their lives might also be a complication or consideration to whether or not they marry. He asks for time, something she doesn’t seem willing to give him. His family also weigh in with their opinions and advice. What’s a guy to do?

I love the way the O’Connell family supports each other. Like any family they offer their opinions and advice, whether or not you want it or need it. When push comes to shove, or when problems arise, they love unconditionally and support each other. Little Eva and Charlotte are now part of the clan, so their problems or hurts are the family’s problems or hurts to solve or heal. I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is the continued story of Marcus, Charlotte, and Eva. In this book we find Charlotte looking for a commitment from Marcus now that her long drawn out divorce is final. Marcus finds himself satisfied with the relationship as is and doesn't feel the need for a piece of paper to prove his commitment to his new family. When Eva's mother finds herself in an uncomfortable and dangerous situation in prison, she makes the ultimate sacrifice for her daughter. In order for Marcus to fulfill his obligation to Eva's mother he must make some really difficult decisions. Marcus learns that love is shown in many ways. This was an emotional read and I truly enjoyed it. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This short story is the continuation of Marcus, Charlotte & Eva’s story. Charlotte's divorce is final and Marcus and her need to figure out what comes next for them. Eva's mother throws a curve ball into the mix while the three are visiting her in jail. Like the other stories in the series, this one is full of the O'Connell family and how they are always there for each other. Even though this is just a short story, it is full of love, family, and choosing what is right.

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 4
Story – 5

Short but really good story.

The Commitment is a follow-up story to The Third Call and I think you’d enjoy this more if you read that first. This is another duet narration and it was good but I thought Elena Rosa’s pacing was a bit off. I thought she accented wrong words in some sentences, almost like she didn’t do a pre-read of the story. I thought Reuben Corbett did a good job.

Marcus and Charlotte are getting along great and they’re taking care of Eva but he’s still hesitant to commit to marriage. His father’s abandonment of his family has made him gun shy. Things happen in this story that kind of force his hand.

I’m really enjoying listening to the audiobooks in this series.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

A very short listen. Did not care for the narration, especially the female voice. It sounded either whiny or nagging. The male voice was kind of lifeless. The narration gave me no sense that Marcus and Charlotte even liked each other. They were just "together" and both wanted Ava.

Charlotte was not my favorite in The Third Call, but by the end, she was ok. She was not my favorite in this one. It seemed to me like Marcus only married her because of Ava. It also made me wonder if Charlotte had her own ulterior motives for wanting to get married after living together for 4 months.

I would give this 2.5 stars.

This is a continuation of Marcus, Charlotte & Eva’s story. It’s a quick read but full of emotions that will tug at your heartstrings. Marcus and Charlotte are faced with decisions about their future and the future of their new family. Although there are only a few chapters, they pack in a lot of feelings, and, of course, the O’Connell Clan have a few opinions to offer. The family dynamic is always interesting, leaving you curious about what’s coming next. It's a story you'll enjoy and a nice addition to the series.

The novella The Commitment showcases Marcus, the sheriff, and his girlfriend Charlotte, who are the guardians of little Eva, daughter of an inmate. She wants all in, to get married, but he is happy enough with the status quo. Stems from childhood abandonment issues that he has chosen not to address. Very well written and leads up to Luke’s story in The Missing Father.

This was a quick little story about Marcus and Charlotte. It highlights the communication needed in a relationship along with the boundaries needed in a family. It also deals with Eva and more of her story. Nicely fleshes out their relationship more.

The Commitment

I just love all the dips and turns in the O'Connell's family! The Commentment was wonderful, short, but wonderful! I had a sneaking suspension what was coming and I am so happy it was, but about Riene, who would have thought! I am so ready for the next, but please make it longer?

This short story is about Marcus, Charlotte, and little Eva. Charlotte's divorce is now final and she wants more from Marcus. Like marriage. But, for some reason, Marcus doesn't feel this is necessary. After all, it's just a piece of paper. What a wonderful addition to this terrific series.

This one was ok

It filled in more information on the O'Connells family. I was happy to see that Marcus and Charlotte got married. Plus I was happy to hear about Eva. This one was a little short for my liking but was ok

O'Connells book # 5
A short story. The commitment in question would be Marcus' to his live-in partner and the possibility of adopting Eva the little girl they are fostering. His girlfriend and working partner wants marriage.

A nice easy read that continues the adventures of the O'Connell clan. I listened to the audio-book version which was very well narrated. Like most of Eckhart's books in this series this is a fun read without the reader having to follow complex twists and turns
