That being said, I still recommend reading Planetside and Spaceside first. They are 'space adventure/mystery' - a tiny bit of military which is just enough for me to get the feel of those characters, etc -- i dont want to say any more. But i enjoyed them and even pre-ordered when i got the notification. I hope that helps. (less)

When Michael Mammay publishes a new book, I am so there. His writing, characters, and plots have drawn me in like few others, and Colonyside was no exception. I’m thrilled to have another Planetside novel to add to my collection.

Butler’s character profile is one of my favorites. His no-bullshit attitude is incredibly appealing (for the same reasons I love Corey’s Avasarala from the Expanse series) and I appreciate that his character seems to have grown and adapted a bit since the first book. I L

Yes, this is my own book. But I just reread it cover to cover and made some minor changes (word choice, that sort of thing) and now it's done. I don't ever touch it again until release day. ...more

For this latest Waiting on Wednesday I take a look at one of my most anticipated books for the second half of 2020, Colonyside by Michael Mammay.

Mammay has been absolutely killing it over the last couple of years ever since he debuted in 2018 with the excellent and action-packed Planetside. Planetside featured a fantastic narrative that combined inventive science fiction elements with a first-rate thriller and military fiction story to create and epic and captivating read that was capped off wit

I got a free ARC in order to provide this review.

This is my third Michael Mammay book. I really liked the first of the series. The second was good as well. That made me worried about the third. My fears were quickly unfounded. Really good book here!

Plot: Each of this books takes place in the setting that the name implies, and this one is no different. Colonyside is set on a colony planet where an extremely rich man's daughter is missing and presumed dead. Carl Butler, a retired army colonel, is

I was lucky enough to be an early reader of this book, and I can’t tell you how much I love Colonyside. MichaeI Mammay’s books just keep getting better and better. Colonyside was a blast to read, and I can’t recommend it enough. It has great dialogue, multi-dimensional characters, and an action-packed storyline that’s perfectly paced from start to finish. If you’re a fan of military sci-fi,I guarantee you’ll love this series.

Colonyside was a very satisfying conclusion to the Planetside trilogy. But do I want to see more of retired Colonel Carl Butler? Heck, yes! He’s a perfect protagonist for this type of work - he’s a smart leader who always seems to be one step ahead of his adversaries. I wouldn’t have thought that military sci-if would be a genre for me, but Mammay makes his characters and plots so interesting and relatable.

In Colonyside, Butler is asked by a very wealthy man to investigate the disappearance of

It’s starting to look like Carl Butler’s purpose in the universe is to be an intergalactic scapegoat. Back at the beginning of the series, Planetside, he thought he was the one they called in when they were looking to get things done. But after the events in that story, he became much more famous – or infamous – definitely infamous – as the galaxy’s biggest mass murderer.

Because he got the job done. In the second book, Spaceside, it seems as though he got h

Another fine Ferra-3 pour from the same bottle as the first two

If you loved Planetside, heck, if you tolerated Spaceside, if it didn't give you a rash just from reading, you're going to want to dive into Colonyside, because Butler is back, an army is still an army, people are still liars, and Carl just can't catch a break.

If you've been wondering if Butler is dead, the first sentence will settle that mystery for you, but this time, Butler's making a go at civilian life...until his past comes cal

4.5 stars

Colonel Carl Butler is pulled out of retirement and back into the action at a colony on another planet. His job? Find out what happened to a missing woman. There is plenty to like about this third novel in the series.

We have indigenous animal life, possibly nefarious mining corporations, the military and several people with competing agendas.

Butler as always, is his same gruff self. Honestly, he's one of my favorite characters in books right now. This is also a series that I will contin

Overall: 5/5
Ending: 3/5

This was quite an enjoyable book, the kind you want to just plunk down and get completely engrossed in it. And it didn't disappoint.

Except perhaps for the ending.

The ending felt a bit like a cop-out. He gave orders that his loyal people were supposed to get their butts off the planet so they couldn't be used as leverage against him or get killed. Instead, he's in trouble and about to get killed, and out of nowhere he gets rescued?

It's nice to learn that oth

This was a solid third book in the trilogy, and better than the last one in my opinion. They mystery was fairly straight-forward, and our colonel was assigned to this based on past experiences. Butler proceeds in his normal, ends justifies the means way, and his supporting cast, some of whom we've seen before, and others are new. The antagonists, big and small, are all great characters with typical, but not un-interesting, motivations. All in all, if you liked the first two books, you'd like thi ...more

From the author who brought us Planetside and Spaceside, comes the third installment of Carl Butler’s story in the universe. For fans of military science fiction, this book has a little of everything. Some action/adventure, some noir/mystery and some humor which helps round the characters out. I definitely recommend this series to all readers and this third installment is just as good as the previous two novels. This author has some serious talent and excited to see what he does next. Good stuff. The characters are the stars here, and they seem quite realistically written with plenty of imperfections and realistic emotions. Tech and many old school tropes mostly take a back seat here. The story is quite engaging, and there is some occasional humor. Scifi and even mystery fans will probably enjoy this.

I really appreciate the ARC for review!!

Michael Mammay, as usual, weaved a tight military mystery. Not until the end did I understand how all the pieces fit together. I was as confused as the MC, Carl. Each character was well thought out and fleshed out. Carl's team on this mission was especially interesting. All their dynamics felt genuine and realistic. And, well, you can't go wrong with R.C. Bray as narrator. ...more

Hurry up with the next one

I’ve been in the Army for 22 years. Officers like Butler are the ones I’ve always loved working for. Please don’t make us wait too long for the next one. Oh and Mac should stick with Carl.

Your going to love Carl and the trouble he gets into.

Solid 4 star book. Wish it was 500 pages. The world building is fantastic. Love the military slant. Hope this series continues. Carl makes me think of Hosh Brolin. Not to old and just seasoned enough, would make a great series on NF. If you like Altered Carbon don’t miss this.

The solid, engrossing escapism I needed this year.
Book 3, but held up as a stand-alone. A fast read, plenty of action, though I never felt truly invested in the characters.

This the third book of a series (Planetside and Spaceside). I got the first as an audiobook and the second as an ebook from my local library. I recommend reading these in order. I really enjoyed the performance of the audiobook, so go that route if you can.

The book is really more a mystery/noir-detective story, with most of the Sci-Fi taking a back seat (supporting role) to what is primarily a character driven plot. The world building is interesting and solid ... and so natural it is easy to mis
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

After reading "Planetside" and "Spaceside" and thoroughly enjoying both, I couldn't pass up the chance to get the ARC for COLONYSIDE, the third book in the series. The title alone intrigued me. With this author's spare prose and just-enough-worldbuilding-to-pull-me-in-but-not-overwhelm, the novel did not disappoint.
