Born and raised in the Cleveland, Ohio area, John Vanek received his bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University, where his passion for creative writing took root. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester, did his internship at University Hospitals of Cleveland, and completed his residency at the Cleveland Clinic.
While practicing medicine for a quarter century, his interest in writing never waned. Medicine was his wife, writing his mistress, and mysteries & poetry his drugs of choice. He began honing his craft by attending creative writing workshops and college
courses. At first pursuing his passion solely for himself and his family, he was surprised and gratified when his work won contests and was published in a variety of literary journals, anthologies, and magazines.
John now lives happily as an ink-stained-wretch in Florida where he teaches a poetry workshop for seniors at a local college. He enjoys swimming, hiking, sunshine, good friends, and red wine.

Father Jake Austin, a priest who is also a doctor, can’t seem to stay out of trouble. This time, the reappearance of his long-estranged father leads him into the world of big-time drug dealers. Soon the bad guys are after him and his loved ones, as well as his shady old man. At the same time, Fr. Jake is having feelings for his old flame Emily and the bishop is pressuring him to either give up the priesthood or give up Emily. With his best friend Tree Macon at his side, Fr. Jake is going to figure it all out, but at what price? It’s a fun read, and I have already bought the next book in the series.

I really like this series--is it the local setting? Or the interesting combination of physician, priest and war vet? Whatever, this was as fun as the others, except for the background section at the beginning that seems inevitable in many series books. I hope #4 is in the works.

Action packed, suspenseful story taking place in Oberlin & Lorain Cty. Good character development.
