“Snowdrift” is a satisfying murder mystery set in the Swedish frozen backdrop. Detective Inspector, and ex-boxer, Embla Nystrom inadvertently gets caught up in a gang member death. The dead man is familiar to Embla: he threatened to kill her when she was 15 as she witnessed her best friend being kidnapped by his brothers.

The dead man leads to other mysterious deaths. Embla teams up with a local policeman along with her boss at Violent Crimes in unraveling the connections of the dead men.

As a teen, Embla watched, terrified, as her best friend Lollo was carried off by three dangerous men and was never seen again. Nearly 15 years later, Embla, who is now a Detective Inspector in the Violent Crimes Unit of the Swedish police, is still haunted by nightmares of that night and is shocked when she receives a call from a voice she recognizes as her friend. The call is quickly ended, leaving Embla wondering...

Eight days later, Embla is visiting her uncle in Dalsland with a young friend w

Embla was with a friend 14 years ago when her friend Lollo was abducted. Since that traumatic time, she has become a cop, and had nightmares about the abductors threatening her. She recognizes a murder victim as one of the abductors, and is shocked to get a random call from her friend who vanished and was presumed dead. Where has Lollo been? Is she somehow involved with a gang of evil Eastern European men who deal in weapons and other unsavory pursuits? There is plenty of excitement and adventu ...more

This book is translated from Swedish and is third in the series about inspector Embla Nystrom. Unfortunately, I haven’t read the previous stories but this book can be read as a standalone. The background history is given where necessary.
Embla who works as a police detective in Gothenburg is taking her spring break with her uncle and the 9-year-old son of her ex in her uncle’s cabin in Dalsland in a remote part of South Sweden. There she receives a phone call from a remote cousin who owns a bunga

Snowdrift is a pretty mediocre nordic noir. The characters are rather flat and some of the storylines just kind of putter out. I’m not sure why a second murder unrelated to the primary murder needed to be introduced, it didn’t really serve a purpose. Also, I was rather uninterested in the gang politics and I could see the twist with Lollo a mile way. Snowdrift kept me entertained, but it certainly isn’t one of my favorite nordic noir’s that I’ve read. I did enjoy the food descriptions though!

Although Snödrev is in Swedish I read an English translation of it and it was called Snowdrift to be published 3 September 2020. I like the way Helene Tursten has developed to keep us excited when she talks about Embla and Lollo. Friends from the beginning then Lollo is kidnapped with Embla seeing it happen and was threaten by one of the Stavic brothers. Years later Embla is having nightmares about it, yet she is now a police officer. Embla talks with her old boss Göran about it when she gets a ...more

Helene Tursten is skilled at crafting mysteries that keep you wanting more. I love her Detective Inspector Irene Huss series, but for some reason after reading three books in this new series, I can't seem to warm up to Embla Nyström. I think it is partly due to the fact that this younger woman keeps everyone at a distance and has a tendency to look down on anyone who doesn't eat as healthy as she does. Lighten up, Embla! For whatever reason, I can't quite put my finger on why she leaves me cold. ...more

First of many

I took a chance on this book, and it paid out big time. Liked the characters the setting a nd the fast moving story line. It certainly was action packed and had just that hint of romance that peaks your interest. The main characters are very much a reflection of the current times. Looking forward to the next in this series.

This is a book full of Swedish words and Swedish places and Swedish people. To an English speaking American, it could be downright disconcerting. Think of someone who lives in Sweden and speaks no English reading a book about New York City, the five boroughs, the streets [some numbered, some not], and the people with those odd-sounding names, and their even-more-odd pronunciation. Potentially baffling, but Helene Thurston pulls it off! She presents just enough location information to give a sens ...more

I always look forward to a new book by a favorite author and even though I enjoyed the read, I must admit I was a little disappointed in the story line.

A voice from Embla's past reawakens memories she has tried to suppress and plunges her into the underworld of gangs, illegal drugs, human trafficking and mafia bosses. Her journey will lead her to an answer better left hidden, but in the end the truth has a way of finding a way out. All in all, not a bad read and one I would make note of for tho

In Helene Tursten’s latest novel, SNOWDRIFT, Detective Inspector Embla Nyström wakes up breathless from a haunting dream that has been disturbing her sleep for years. Fourteen years to be exact, which is when her best friend disappeared from a Gothenburg nightclub. Then the phone rings, and Embla immediately recognizes the voice on the other end as belonging to the missing Lollo. But before she can say anything, the connection is broken. Still, here is proof that her friend is still alive and mu ...more

Besides being an accomplished detective, Embla Nyström, of Gothenburg's Violent Crimes Unit, is a proficient boxer, skilled hunter, and superb markswoman. In Helene Tursten's "Snowdrift," translated from the Swedish by Marlaine Delargy, Embla is plagued by frequent nightmares stemming from an incident that occurred when she was a teenager. She and her best friend, Lollo, went to a club and drank too much, and by the time the evening was over, Lollo had disappeared. Embla believed that some of th ...more

I really enjoyed this book, and its tangled web of characters. Embla was much more relatable in this 2nd book in the series. We got to know her better here, and find out more about her backstory, and fleshing her out made many of her decisions more understandable.

There are several crimes here, and I liked that it was tough to tell which was the main angle. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, and the story isn't completely resolved at the end, but the end was satisfying and I liked t

I’ve not read Helene Thurston or her two prior Embla Nystrom book shut I couldn’t resist picking up Snow Drift after reading the description. Set in Sweden and following one murder investigation of a gang leader, and another of an 18 year old student, this book certainly draws you in.

I enjoyed getting to know Embla seeing the investigations unfold through her eyes as a Detective Inspector. The investigation into the gang leader was complex, violent and so intriguing. I really got caught up in th
This is the third in Tursten's Embla Nystrom series. It opens with a lot of snow. I've been looking forward to reading this.

And I loved it! 5 stars! I was completely absorbed in the story. And at the end I realized that though this part of Embla's story has found an answer, there's more to learn in the future. Which is good.

I STRONGLY advise reading this series in order: First is Hunting Game, Second is Winter Grave, and Snow Drift is the third. A good part of the third book is looping back to

I’ve been a big fan of Helene Tursten’s books, eagerly devouring the Irene Huss series. Her stories are both excellently plotted and her prose flows easily.
However, her Embla series is quite different from the Irene Huss series because even though Huss and Embla work together in the same department, about the only similarity is they are both women. Huss is really urban, happily married with children, house and a dog while Embla is young, outdoorsy, single and athletic. Like a lot of readers l w

This is the third in the mildly police procedural Detective Inspector Embla Nyström series, set in Gothenburg, Sweden, and further north, near rural Dalsland and Bengtsfors. This investigation brings traumatic pieces of Embla's past into the present -- including the disappearance of her best childhood friend Lollo -- as she and local police officer (and K9 trainer) Ollie Tillman search for the killer or killers of some wealthy gang members with ties to Croatia.  Extremely prosaic writing, as usu ...more

A thank you to NetGalley for sharing the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Having mistaken this book for the latest installment of an altogether series when I requested the ARC, I went into it more of out a sense of obligation than anticipation, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Probably more of a 3.5 than 4 star if I'm feeling nitpicky, which I'm not because it was just so dang fun. I truly enjoyed the characters, the preposterous storyline (what is it about the chic Nordic cool that makes th

have never read a book by this author before, but did enjoy it. always love a happy ending. police detective Embla is called to check on a murder. her police associate, Goran, helps ground her in her assessment. dead gangsters Milo, Luca, Kador, were known to Embla before this murder. Embla's missing friend, Lollo, is mysteriously found after being lost for a number of years. absolutely loved the character of Olle and his dog, Tore. who could not love a canine handler sniffing out crime. also lo ...more

Snowdrift is hampered by pedestrian prose unaided by an uninspired translation. Flat characters for the most part, but a decent mystery of the procedural persuasion. Despite these shortcomings, Snowdrift still held my interest and I even grew to care about a couple of the characters, in spite of their limited dimension. Of course, with any halfway decent mystery, there is also that growing need to just find out what happened and whodunnit. I made it to the finish. It passed the time, which is no ...more
This 3rd in the series involved an incident from the detective's childhood that carried over from the previous installments, but it was relatively easy to follow. I find mysteries about organized crime a bit boring compared to a whodunnit. I liked the descriptions of the wintry countryside and the love interest and his dog.

Irene Huss from the author's other series makes a brief appearance.

Embla Nyström continues her development as an investigator while dealing with haunting memories from her teen years. All is not as it seems but Embla’s focus on doing the right thing pays off. If you have enjoyed the two proceeding novels you will like this one.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing me with a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

I love this series so much. This book was paced a little slower than the previous two but had the most satisfactory ending that was well worth the read. A solid mystery with good detective work and great subplots.

I have to say I really like this author and this series, the location and characters, descriptions of food and places all so interesting. I like Embla as a character, I also like the appearances by Irene and Tommy. I hope there are more books in this series.
