This is book four of the A North and Martin Abduction Mystery series and continues to follow Missing Persons detectives Jim North and Kerry Martin as they are called to a new case. It is initially a homicide case, but they have been called in as the dead man’s young daughter is missing and presumed taken. The dead man, Hartman, was a very wealthy man and media tycoon, who was in fact working with the FBI to take down a particularly nasty group known as the Greeks. They pampered to the whims of the extremely rich and catered to their every whim, no matter how illegal it was. It covered such sick deeds as gaining young children for their paedophile clients and those who wanted to torture and kill others. He had finally been accepted on a low level by the group and received his first request, a young girl, as he was told by his FBI handler Hickem, to ask for.

This young girl had run off into the woods and hidden herself away, but Hartman’s daughter was too scared to enter the woods and was taken. At the same time as this case, Martin is awaiting a decision on her over use of violence on her last case, where she severely beat a suspect, after he had attacked her, both trying to save their own children who had been taken. She is waiting to see if the case will go to trial and she may lose her badge and become too much like her father. North is also dealing with the secrets behind who his true father was, having been brought up in foster care and being abducted himself as a child. Now this man has left him a huge sum of money and a possible link to lots of half siblings he never knew about. But, this could be yet another game played by his birth father, that he wants no part of.

The case of just one missing child has now expanded into a multi organisation taskforce, who are trying to take own a secret organisation that operates around the world and seems to have people everywhere, including in the police departments, the FBI and other places such as local government and more. Luckily for North and Martin, they have a boss they can trust completely, but the same can’t be said for the FBI team. Money and power are being used for very dark purposes and this secret group even have assassins on their payroll. Both detectives are going to be putting themselves into direct danger as they try to save the girl and other children that might be getting auctioned off to the deprived clients of the Greeks. But they will also end up having to decide how far outside of their own comfort zone they will go. Will they go outside police procedure to get the people responsible and to save the children? Hard decisions need to be made and the consequences will be far reaching.

A very complex case which only just begins to nibble at the edges of this worldwide secret organisation and its catering to the whims of the secret rich and their deprived wishes. It is also a book that exposes the depravity that goes mostly hidden from normal people, all around the world. Crime of the worst kind and playing on the heart strings with another missing child case and the reality of human trafficking. Another great read in this series, but definitely hard hitting reality. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Getting to ridiculous for me.

I don’t really know where to begin but the story line is basically the same, sinister individuals bordering on psycho and it is Martin and North overcoming all odds to the rescue, despite the great emotional costs to themselves. It’s almost a competition between them who is the greatest martyr and who has the most emotional baggage.

I’m so tired of the story having some connection to North’s father it has become torture in itself. There are so many unrealistic happenings it is a joke.

Now it seems Martin is slowly turning into her father when it comes to bad cop. But by all accounts faces no disciplinary actions.

There are so many times I found myself saying give me a break in unrealistic happenings. One is, it is in the middle of the night Martin calls her father who is in a maximum security prison gives her name badge number, etc and her dad is on the phone in 3 minutes and then off the top of her head gives her a name a number and this person with apparently no questions asked commits a kidnapping within minutes for someone he has no way of confirming who she is for free.

I guess there are some people who like the same rehashed plots with eye rolling, ridiculous scenes that are simply stupid. Unless I need something to read because I’m on a deserted island I don’t plan on reading any more of North and Martin.

This is another fast paced mystery in the series involving Detectives Jim North and Kerry Martin. The Pieces that Remain has the two detectives trying to find a missing child who was abducted from a cabin in the woods. Someone has been killed at the cabin and another child is found hiding in the woods.

This scene is only the beginning when the detectives learn there's a wealthy, hidden society, full of high ranking, powerful people, from all walks of life, and they can get anything they want upon paying their membership fee. This includes sex trafficking children, which neither Jim or Kerry (or any normal human) can tolerate. They want to take down this group and will do almost anything to accomplish that. They butt heads with the FBI, nearly lose their jobs and you have to wonder if anyone is going to make it out alive.

Good series and excellent partnership

This has for me, been a very compelling series that has kept me reading for long periods of time. The stories, the characters, the partnership of two unlikely people all combine to make a continuing narrative, but if you can't read them in order it might make a small difference.
In this last book I did find more editing errors, (straight and arrow) but didn't bother me that much or interrupt the storyline either. Basically it's a non graphic depiction of what would be considered horrific treatment of children, but the reader is allowed to imagine this treatment. We aren't slapped in the face with violence just to make it more appalling. Good series I would highly recommend.

Race Against the Clock

The Pieces That Remain is a fast paced race to save children in dire need. Once again Jim and Kerry are racing against a literal clock to find, and rescue, children in the clutches of a faceless evil.

James Hunt has walked a fine line in the North and Martin series with shining light on the evils of child abduction and trafficking, without being sexually explicit or overly gratuitous in descriptions of the violence inflicted.

I hope there will be future installments to this series. I like the cast of characters, the backstory has been interesting, but most of all the North and Martin team is a great duo.

I've now read books 3 and 4 in this series and I have mixed feelings. I really like Jim and Kerry and their friendship/work relationship, although in this book I was a little irritated by the extent that Jim took over the case – I felt like Kerry was more of a supporting character for much of the book. Also, the number of typos and grammatical errors is a distraction. I may read more by this author in the future though as there are plenty of interesting characters and the stories are definite page turners.

Great story teller and writer

Discovered this writer-a few books back and look forward to reading his work whenever I have time. I love the protagonist Jim North and his moral code of behaviour . The books are well crafted, the story is well told, the tension just right to keep you reading through the night and despite the topic you find yourself feeling that there are some very good people out there wanting to keep our vulnerable kids safe.

Riveting

There is an ugly underside to our world, and the North and Martin mysteries show the worst of it—chili predators. When you’ve been through something unspeakable, you do all you can to protect others from it. Such is Jim North, a detective giving his all to protect other children from what he endured. Don’t read this book first. Start at the beginning of the series. Then you can begin to understand. Excellent writing!

The pieces that remain

As far as I could tell, the plot was pretty good and the characters were fairly well developed. I stopped reading when they started throwing the "f" bomb around. It is a vulgar word and has no business in literature. I think some authors are too lazy to develop their characters so they start using vulgar language. What does that say about the kind of people we are if we read that junk?

This is one author that can have you on edge in no time. When it comes to abductions you are usually coming against time but it is the hunt that pulls you in. Jim and partner Kerry yet again have us at their mercy as they takes us to the edge once again. The mystery will have you keeping your eyes peeled for the clues with needing the answers pdq.

Getting more intenseaq

This series has become one to follow. Each book gets more involved, and more complex. Delving into the horrors of the underworld and the deviant people that belong. Each book is independent but it does help to read the preceding books. No cliffhanger. Hopefully there will be a continued relationship of Martin and North. Partnerships are important.

This is the first book I’ve read in this particular series and it’s a great story. I liked the way the author leaves clues, so the reader is able to try to figure out the mystery as the book progresses. These two main characters work very well together. An enjoyable read.

Children in need

This book kept me spellbound because unfortunately it is true and actual. While I can't personally fix it, I was happy to read about detectives who did, even if it was fictional. I know that somewhere out there this is happening. I can on!y hope that there are real life Kerry's and Jim's. Great book.but

Great Series

This series is always a fast read for me because it is that good. The subject matter is very disturbing but the way the author handles it is very well done. I really like the main characters especially on how they handle the situations and they interaction with each other as partners.
Well worth your time.

A bout a secret society whose purpose can't be revealed here

I cannot reveal the purpose of the society because it will ruin the story for the reader. The plot develops nicely with a murder in a wilderness cabin along with a frighten child. The story unfolds as to how the murder victim and the unrelated child are involved in the mystery.

One of the Best Mysteries Ever!

When an author grabs readers' attention so quickly and doesn't let up until the end, he or she goes to the top of my "favorite authors" list; that's where this indie writer sits now as I wait for more! Great realistic characters, scenes and overall plot, it's a real page turner!

Very difficult to follow all the psychological claptrap that went on. The plot itself was good but a bit complicated at the end to the point of not knowing where the children were kept. The cops has a lot of baggage. Both of them, from a previous life, and from a parent. Not something I want to pursue.

North and Martin is a duo to follow. They each have an amazing history and they belong together. They are the best and finding the lost. They have their own techniques and they don't follow the rules. They are committed to finding the lost and they keep their history's focused. You will want to read the series from beginning to end, it will take you into the moment when each thing happens.
