If you're looking for a book version of r/todayilearned, this book is for you.

I'm not totally sure why but reading random facts and stories is just so entertaining to me.

From origins of words to odd superstitions, I learned so many useless things that I'll never actually need to know. And I loved it.

I highly recommend this for any fact addict like me!

This reminded me of a more adult version of the "Strange but True" books I seemingly read by the hundreds as a kid. It's a collection of weird, humorous, and occasionally disquieting facts from human history--the wild ways our species has attempted to cure, treat, adorn, and beautify itself.

Don't expect much detail here--it's just a collection of quick little anecdotes about odd bits of cultural history. A few of the items presented as fact are based on some shaky evidence. But for those who enjoy quirky random stories, it will be an enjoyable read.

เคยสร้าง, แฟชั่นอะไรก็ไม่รู้ และอาชีพสุดแปลกที่เคยมีในอดีต ซึ่งบอกเลยว่าแต่ละอันก็คือพีคและ surreal มาก จนเราต้องลองไปค้นใน Google ดูว่านี่มันเรื่องจริงใช่ไหมเนี่ย?!

😍 ที่เราชอบเล่มนี้มากๆ เพราะในเล่มให้ข้อมูลประวัติศาสตร์แปลกๆ แบบเยอะมากๆ คือทุกๆ 3 หน้าก็จะมีข้อมูลสิ่งแปลกๆ ให้เราอ่านแล้วในบางบทยังมีรูปให้เราดูด้วย (แต่ด้วยความที่เล่มนี้เขาเน้นปริมาณ ข้อมูลในแต่ละเรื่องก็เลยจะไม่ได้ลงลึกมากนะคะ) นอกจากนี้อย่างในบทไสยศาสตร์แปลกที่คนในอดีตเชื่อคนเขียนยังมีการวิเคราะห์ด้วยว่าทำไมคนเชื่ออะไรแบบนี้ แล้วสำหรับใครที่กำลังกลัวอยู่ว่าเอ๊ะ เล่มนี้จะอ่านยากไหม จะวิชาการจ๋าหรือเปล่า เราขอบอกเลยว่าเล่มนี้อ่านง่ายมาก ตลอดทั้งเล่มคนเขียนมีการแทรกมุขตลกอยู่เรื่อยๆ แถมคนแปลก็แปลเก่งด้วย อ่านแล้วไม่น่าเบื่อเลย ตรงกันข้ามอ่านแล้วบรรเทิงแล้วก็เพลินมากๆ (เราอ่าน 2 วันจบ)

A quick, light, humorous read about various weird things we humans have done, invented, believed in, etc. I especially liked the section "Medical Cures, Quacks, and Craziness."

Trota of Salerno, one of the few female physicians in the twelfth century, had a pretty savage prescription for keeping pregnancy at bay. She recommended cutting off the testicles of a male weasel and releasing it back into the wild. Then, wrapping the testicles in goose skin, and wearing them around your neck. I definitely think having a shriveled pair of nuts around your neck would make the guys give you a wide berth, and prevent any activities that remotely led to pregnancy. An effective contraceptive indeed!

เหมือนเป็นรวมเกร็ดประวัติศาสตร์ที่แปลกๆ หลายๆเรื่องของมนุษย์ในอดีต
โดยรวมก็น่าสนใจนะ บางเรื่องแบบกลเป็น tmi แต่ก็เป็นความรู้รอบตัวดี
แต่มันด้วยวิธีการเขียน หรือการแปลก็ไม่รู้สิ ที่ทำให้อ่านแล้วรู้สึกสะดุดๆ

Out of the many trivia books that i have read recently (Humble Bundle rules :) ), I liked this one the best.

Mostly because it presents is facts in a well organised manner, not too much and not too little information per fact. And no attempts at being funny which ruined a few other books.

There were some interesting factoids in here, but it didn't feel as cohesive as I would have liked it to be. The Inventions section was my favorite and prompted the most discussion for our book club, but the overwhelming amount of typos was too much for my editor-brain to handle, so I had to take off a star just for that.

This book wasn’t as good as I’d hoped, but parts of it were fascinating. I would like the author to have dug a little deeper into some of the stories mentioned here rather than barely touching on so many of the ‘curiosities’ in the book. Still, the bits that *were intriguing earned the book an extra half-star.
