What do you think?

Breaking Dylan
Who am I?
Dylan… and I always stop there. Let’s face it, no one wants to hear about my jacked-up life.
Besides, the court-appointed therapist says I need to find my purpose. What a joke.
What I can find though--that works just as well. Drugs? Definitely. Booze? Totally. Sex? Absolutely.
I thought 16 was supposed to be sweet. I’ve gone from losing my virginity, to losing myself. And now that I’ve hit bottom, they say there’s nowhere else to go but up.
I guess I'll find out.

The writing was ok..
but if you are looking for a young adult's tragic story, this book is good for you! however, it was just not my cup of tea :( I felt pity for Dylan, her dysfunctional family and her young poor love life..

If you are a fan of Go Ask Alice. If you have ever felt like you're riding the roller-coaster of your life and the next turn, by God, has to be better than that last loop-di-loop, that the next turn has got to hold a break- a solution- an opportunity that is vastly different than everything that has already happened....aka if your life has not been perfect- you will absolutely be able to relate to the main character Dylan. Are you going to fall in love with the character? No. Will you scream at the book every time she makes a decision that you think is totally wrong for her? Yes (you will then internally despise yourself for momentarily becoming your parents). Will she capture your heart, melt it, break it and then make it hopeful. Absolutely. What this book captures- more than anything- is the idea of hope. That through the muck and ugliness of life, we don't come out shining clean but we can come out with hope... and hope is always beautiful. Read this beautiful tale and have your heart stolen.

From the first page, it’s incredibly easy to connect with and root for Dylan—a troubled teen who is going through the stress of dating teenage boys (enough said) and living in a terrible family situation. The character voice is so distinct and real that it felt like I was actually reading a teenager’s diary. Not only that, but the 80’s time setting was incredibly interesting, and I absolutely loved the pop culture references of the period. During the darker moments of the book, I found myself completely heartbroken for Dylan. Even when I didn’t agree with her actions. Which, to me, makes the character even that much more three-dimensional.
This is an incredibly realistic, cautionary tale of what can happen to someone who grows up surrounded by unhealthy adults. I would recommend Breaking Dylan for teens as well as anyone who has ever experienced deep family trauma.
