A prophecy… A new student… A pot plant growing out of control… One of these things could save Toby. The trouble is, which one? When Toby arrived at this school six months ago, learning magic seemed like a dream come true. Now he’ll be happy if he and his classmates just get out of here alive. With teachers, other students and their own spells against them, will Toby save his friends from the dangers they face? Or is he the one they should really fear? If you like darkly magical tales, life or death drama, and a little bit of danger, you’ll love Helen’s new fast-paced novella.
Helen Vivienne Fletcher wrote her first novel between the ages of thirteen and sixteen. It is, by several accounts, one of the funniest novels ever written. It’s just a shame it was supposed to be a psychological thriller.
Helen has worked in many jobs, doing everything from theatre stage management to phone counselling. She discovered her passion for writing for children and young people while working as a youth support worker, and now helps children find their own passion for storytelling through her business Brain Bunny Workshops, which runs creative writing holiday programmes and afterschool classes.
She has written an impressive collection of books for everyone from preschoolers to adult readers. Her work has been both traditionally and independently published, and she has won and been shortlisted for numerous awards.
She lives in Wellington, New Zealand, with her disability assistance dog, Bindi.
Overall Helen just loves telling stories, and is always excited when people want to hear or read them.
*I was gifted this book by the author, all thoughts are completely my own*
This was a spure of the moment read for me and I'm glad for that. I was so engrossed in this novella I never noticed 3 police cars drive by with sirens on. Haha
If you are looking for a quick read, with descriptive text and magic I highly recommend this one.
If you are looking for romance or a long story you wont find that here.
A magic school, a spell gone wrong, and a prophecy to fulfill...or maybe prevent.
Toby is convinced that he is in the wrong place, especially since none of his spells seem to work out like his classmates. But when the new girl shows up, and he overhears part of a prophecy, things start to change. This was an enjoyable read and left me wanting more.
Oh goodness. I randomly downloaded this short book from my library app and I'm so glad that I did. I really enjoyed this little novella. A quick and easy read that still felt like a great mini adventure.
If you're looking for a speedy little number I'd recommend this one.
I remained intrigued with the story as it delved into different aspects of magic or strange happenings. all the way to the unexpected end. Worth reading.
Fun, dark, and gripping. Likable protagonist, interesting characters. An intriguing, eerie take on a school for magic, no kid would ever want to attend!
