Neighborly Affection #2.5

Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories

Rate this book
Finally, readers of the Neighborly Affection series get the other side of the story...

Jay Kress knows his lover is into the girl next door. As a polyamorous bisexual guy, he’s cool with that. And he’s pretty sure the gal is into Henry, too, if their explosive dinner party is any clue.

But now he'll have to tackle a submissive’s toughest job: getting his lovers to make the leap from occasional sex to the permanent triad relationship he knows they deserve. Their hearts are made for each other—and the sexual perks ain’t bad, either.

With an overcautious dominant on one side and a newcomer to the lifestyle on the other, Jay knows he has to tread lightly, but he can't help pushing for more. Can he bring Henry and Alice together before their fear of losing each other dooms them all?

Read Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories side by side with Playing the Game and Crossing the Lines to see the bigger picture of how Henry, Alice, and Jay found their forever love.

I am a former Midwestern gal who well knows the joy of flopping down in a field for an afternoon and composing stories about the shapes in the clouds. As it turns out, adulthood doesn't have to be so different from childhood.

Sharing those stories is a new thing for me. I hope readers will love the characters as much as I do.

For fans of M.Q. Barber’s Neighborly Affection series her recent announcement that she was retaining her rights and re-releasing the series in self-publication, with a new book to follow, was a dream. That dream is now reality – Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: A Neighborly Affection Companion. Those familiar with Ms. Barber’s newsletter will see this as a collection of her regular musings from Jay… giving his side of the story. In M.Q.’s words, “He confided his feelings for thirty-nine stories, covering the first thirty-nine weeks of his and Henry’s triad relationship with Alice.” But as it says in the blurb, this is “the bigger picture of how Henry, Alice, and Jay found their forever love.”

Obviously, this book is not for readers who haven’t yet read the Neighborly Affection series. If you haven’t, why not? It is utter perfection with fabulous character development and story arc. And this companion is more than “the other side” it’s like the missing piece, the filler… and it’s delicious!

Designed to be read alongside the previous novels, it makes for wonderful reminiscing as each chapter has guide notes to advise you when in the trio’s relationship Jay’s outtakes are taking place. To give it a little context, when Henry and Jay first started courting Alice, Henry allowed Jay to meet with her for lunch every Tuesday, to silently offer support – with some stipulations. “He couldn’t talk about the fucking. Couldn’t talk about the hopes he and Henry shared for her. No pushing allowed.” Henry’s standards for lunchtime etiquette. Oh Henry!

This companion is more than “the other side” it’s like the missing piece, the filler… and it’s delicious!

As Jay conveys his thoughts and desires to us, the reader, his submissiveness (both to Henry and Alice) is on full display and so natural. His time spent with Alice is like a flirty dance of worship and admiration. Keeping within the boundaries, he yearns to help Alice see her worth to all three of them, and he comes to realize that Henry “laid a task on him more important than any other, because this one mapped the route for the rest of their lives together.”

This highly anticipated read not only brings us back to Henry, Jay and Alice, but to M.Q. Barber’s delightfully engaging writing, with analogies that paint a picture even Henry would be proud of, such as, “Tuesdays demanded sneaky shortcuts on side trails so she’d glimpse the love and gain fresh energy from the breeze but not see him pacing her.”

This highly anticipated read not only brings us back to Henry, Jay and Alice, but to M.Q. Barber’s delightfully engaging writing, with analogies that paint a picture even Henry would be proud of.

Even as devotees of the Neighborly Affection series know where things lead, there is still this building tension and desire to see the ménage unfold. For Henry to loosen his restraints. For Jay to find comfort in his own worth. For Alice to voice her desires. Because we can already see what Henry realizes is, “The most important layer of his life – balancing the freedom and discipline his lovers craved in a satisfying mix for all three of them.”

Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories truly is A Neighborly Affection Companion, displaying through Jay how Henry fulfills both their needs, while supporting their individual identities, and giving fans a delightful peek into their blossoming future. As Henry says, “We’ve more games yet to play,” and this reader can’t wait!

I loved this book, which is a companion novel to the "Neighborly Affection" series. A third-person heroine POV, BDSM DM/sm/sf menage that is ultimately about two men who try to teach a woman what love looks like, so that she may recognize it in them for each other and for her.

It isn't meant to be read outside the series as the novella between books, but alongside it, chapter by chapter. Each chapter of Tuesdays with Jay has a sub-heading pointing the reader to the place in the series that it takes place. It is in the male POV of one of the heroes, and takes place outside the series set in a Boston diner on Tuesday afternoons along with the heroine.

It gives so much more insight into the mind of the sweet, flirty, outgoing submissive Jay Kress. He is shown in the series as being exuberant, loyal, and eager to please. Since the series is written in the heroine's POV, we aren't privy to his thoughts, which may be considered a bit shallow due to his not being able to really say what he wants.

Alice is being slowly coaxed into recognizing the love that Jay and his dominant/owner Henry have for her, so with Henry setting the plans in motion, Jay is left to follow his lead. Henry is always holding Jay back a bit in the hopes that Alice won't get spooked.

It was Jay who came up with the idea of having lunches with Alice every Tuesday as a way of building their relationship past the nights they spent together, and to act as eyes and ears for Henry so that they can make sure their plans are hitting the right target.

This book consists of chapter by chapter scenes matching up with the series, each Tuesday lunch that Alice and Jay share where we hear so much more that we otherwise would have had M.Q. not put out the book.

Also, this book contains never before released chapters, so those who think they have read them already because they were getting the newsletter, know this, it goes past book two and into book three. It also contains the novella "Three Way Tie" is added at the end, meant to be read after finishing "Healing the Wounds".

Ah, but how I loved revisiting these Tuesday quickies with Jay, Henry, and Alice! And yes, I read Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories in a Tuesday because reading it on any other day would have felt wrong. Originally published through M.Q. Barber's newsletter, the author has gathered together these snippets of Jay's Tuesdays to make for the perfect accompaniment to her Neighborly Affection series, which remains one of my personal favorites. Re-reading the collection had me smiling while reminiscing on the journey the this throuple (a word I hadn't even known back when I'd originally read the series a few years ago) went through. Having Jay's voice heard and shared allows fans and readers of the series to have a more complete picture of this trio's love story. It goes without saying that this book must be read after the first two Neighborly Affection novels. Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories is a must-read for anyone and everyone who has fallen in love with this series and this throuple. Five stars. 🖤

While I was able to read most of the stories in this book from M.Q. Barber's early monthly newsletter, but being able to read them together, along with the input from the author and the timeline for each entry within the series was super helpful. I would actually recommend a new reader to this series to read Becoming His Master first, then incorporate Tuesdays with Jay within each of the books, reading the portions of Tuesday with Jay with each book so you can see behind the scenes with the Tuesdays with Jay stories. My ultimate favorite is Barber included a future look at the trio, set 7 years past the joining of Alice to Jay and Henry - it is wonderful to see how this trio has continued to be together and grown in their relationship. This book is such a wonderful addition to the series and allows you inside Jay and Henry's relationship during the time that Alice is beginning her contract.

I'm so glad they're back!

These characters are like family to myself, and several others I know. It's an absolute thrill to have the back again! Henry, Jay, and Alice have been sorely missed. This series is one of my all time favorites. I read the paperbacks until they fell apart, and now have them on every device I own. Just in case I feel like I need to spend an healing afternoon visiting with beloved friends. If you haven't treated yourself to the magic that is the Neighborly Affection series yet, drop EVERYTHING, and do it now! I guarantee they will find a place in your heart, as well.

Wonderful!

This was a great peak inside Jay's head, to get to see his point of view during the first 3 books of the series. M. Q. Barber's writing is as always, poignant, emotional and sensual. Her healthy portrayal of characters growing through trial, trauma, and love is delightful.

Great Read

This book is a great companion to M.Q Barber’s Neighborly Affection series. I highly recommend you read those books as well. The characters are well written and real and the sex scenes are erotic without being overly graphic and raunchy. I have read the series multiple times and love this newest addition to Henry, Jay and Alice’s story.

Wonderful

I am a big fan of the Neighborly Affection series and have read the series many times. This book takes the action one step further by getting insight to Jays thoughts in the weeks in between the contract Friday's. It lets us see more interaction between Jay and Henry too. Highly recommend.

This book was a wonderful addition to the books. I read most of them as they came out but its wonderful to have them all compiled with appropriate markers to where they come in the other storylines. As always lovely to have Jay and Henry's POV instead of just the feminine voice.

Great addition to the series

I’m so glad that MQ Barber decided to release this as a book. I found these books a few years ago, but I missed quite a few Tuesday’s With Jay. I loved going back and getting Jay’s perspective and was pleasantly surprised to get to see Henry’s perspective as well.

The series as a whole is well written and each character has an individual voice and is multi dimensional. Especially since reading Tuesday’s with Jay it makes me wish there had been more than Alices point of view in the books, but I still enjoy the series.

I hope the series continues I love watching Henry, Jay, and Alice grow and getting a peek into Will and Emma.

*** I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
This is a collection of short stories originally shared by M.Q. Barber with her newsletter subscribers that gives us Jay's POV and the rare glimpse of Henry's POV over the course of the first 2 books in her Neighborly Affection series which are told exclusively in Alice's POV. This series is not standalone and should be read in sequence to understand how these characters develop and grow into their triad.

Having said that, chapters 1-21 puts book 1 in context while chapters 22-24 bridge the gap in the action that we dive right into with the start of book 2 that's covered by chapters 25-40; chapter 41 leaps ahead 7 years (perhaps my favorite); and chapter 42 is set a few months after the end of Book 5.

I subscribed to Barber's newsletter so this content wasn't new to me and while it's not absolutely necessary to read this in tandem with the series, I do recommend it, because we generally only get Alice's perspective in this series (with the exception of book 4, which is really the prequel in which Jay and Henry first meet and get together). Each chapter includes a cue to let you know where in the series each chapter here fits chronologically. Alice is an atypical heroine in that she is ruled by rational, analytical logic, so her understanding of Henry and Jay's motivations are ruled by that. While their relationship is sexual relatively quickly, the emotional side is a slowburn because it isn't until the end of book 2 that she admits to herself and Henry that she is in love with them, which is what I love about Tuesdays with Jay. We see how eager and impatient Jay is to bring Alice in, and how Henry understands her and is willing to wait for her to come to the realization herself because that's what she'll need to stay and invest.

There's a lovely lunch that Jay has with Emma, one of Henry's oldest friends, which provides us with a sense of who Henry was as a young man because while he is the dominant who directs Alice and Jay in scenes, we only really know him through how others perceive him, and they're not always the most reliable narrators, so any peek into Henry's past is a welcome one.

If you enjoyed the Neighborly Affection series, this companion will make your reading experience a richer, more colourful one.

Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: A Neighborly Affection Companion by M.Q. Barber is a full length read and book 2.5 in this series.
The highly anticipated Tuesdays with Jay was previously published in the author's newsletters, and is now re-edited, available in this wonderful companion.
In Tuesdays with Jay the story of Henry, Alice and Jay is told in Jay's POV. There are glimpses in Henry's gorgeous mind, his thoughts, his fears and his love for the two. In the original books, he's a formal character, a man a bit set in his ways. In TwJ he shows his vulnerable side and I loved his character even more.
And Alice, don't get me started with Alice, her growing in her own skin, her accepting the love she deserves and secretly craves. I love, love, love how her character developed.
On the other side is Jay , the playful jokester, the man who's already through a lot and has the scars to prove it. He's content in their relationship and longs for Alice's love just like for Henry's .
I started reading and was intrigued from the start. I read the full length book, cover to cover, in one sitting. I mean who needs sleep. I loved meeting the three, I loved the author's beautiful words, I loved the excellent writing and most of all I loved chapter 41 - sorry not sorry, no spoileres here.
This book made me want to re-read all the other books in this series, and I did.
Henry, Alice and Jay will always have a special place in my heart.
I highly recommend the book and the series, and I wish I could give more than 5 Stars.

I love, love, LOVE this series, and the characters of Henry, Jay and Alice - so this was an eagerly awaited book for me.  This is not stand alone.  You need to have read the first Neighborly Affection book "Playing the Game" to appreciate this one, or at least have started it, as the stories in "Tuesdays with Jay" begin during the time period of that first book.  MQ Barber states at the beginning of each chapter which chapter and book that weeks time period is set in.  So without having read, or be already reading "Playing the Game" it would not make a lot of sense.

As a huge fan of this series I was thrilled to be able to read from Jay's point of view.  Sweet, sweet loveable Jay, it was wonderful to be able to get to know him further and learn more of what happened between him and Alice during their Tuesday lunches.  This is not your usual BDSM series, it is the best I have read.  Never before have I read a series and longed to be in such a relationship, but the love and care that Henry has for Jay, and then Alice is palpable.  There is no degradation or humiliation, or someone getting their jollies at hurting another.  Just pure love, respect and caring for each other...with a lot of fantastic sex.  :)   If you have already read this series, well I am sure you don't need to read the reviews, you will just buy this book immediately anyway.  But if you haven't, start with "Playing the Game."   "Tuesdays with Jay" is read at the same time.   So do yourself a favor and buy them both.  :)

There’s nary a word published by MQ Barber that I haven’t read. Repeatedly. I’m a *huge* fan of her work, her modern twists on romance, and her ability to convey characters’ fears, passion and growth. Even though I’d already read most of the contents of Tuesdays with Jay before it was published in the collection, I am delighted to have all the stories snuggled between the covers of this book.

TwJ is an excellent companion to the Neighborly Affection series, though I think it stands pretty well as a short story collection, too. Series readers will enjoy more of Jay’s perspective as he woos Alice as a friend, lover, and more. Jay’s stories are like opening the curtain to the view the landscape of all the plans and emotions that Jay and Henry, his long-time partner and dom, have for Alice and the life they want to build with her. It enriches the series, and it’s really fun to see the origin of some of the subtle comments and plot points in the series that get an “aha!” with Jay’s enthusiastic telling.

If the Neighborly Affection series is a beautiful tapestry (which it is!), then TwJ is the extra dye that makes the yarns of the tapestry even more beautiful and enhances the overall masterwork. Fun and flirty, deep and emotional, and everything in between, Tuesdays with Jay will bring a little more joy to the series and to life. It’s guaranteed to lift your heart and give you hope - and who can say no to more of that???

I have loved this series, and have been hooked from the very first book. This is an amazing addition to the series because it gives a new perspective on the building of the relationship between Henry, Jay, and Alice. In Playing the Game and Crossing the Lines you get to see the relationship from Alice's point of view, and even get a sense of Henry's motivations by his actions, but Jay appears to be following their lead. In Tuesdays With Jay you get to see the true importance of Jay's role in building and advancing the relationship and how fragile it actually is in the beginning. I love that this book gives you more of not just Jay, but some more depth of Henry's motivations and actions and insecurities. I love Jay's carefree character in the books, he is happy and always willing to please, but here we get to see the deeper side of his character, the insecure, vulnerable side and the things that contributed to his character. We also get the independent side of Jay, the side that wants to defy Henry, but only to actually please him.

This is a must-read for any fan of the series, and if not a fan yet you will be. You should definitely read the first two books before or in tandem with this book, I like how the author references the adjacent scenes from the books to the companion so you can read them together or go back to the books and refresh yourself with the lead-ups and afterward of each Tuesday.

The bonus is you get the free short story Three-Way Tie.

So my absolute favorite series, most re-read, have the paperbacks on my shelf is Neighborly Affections.  I adore Henry, Jay, and Alice and was sad when their journey looked like it was ending so when I heard that M.Q. Barber was putting out her "Tuesdays with Jay", a series of short Jay POVs that are included with her newsletters, monthly, I was so excited.  I hadn't gotten all of them (I came in after they started and my email sometimes sent them to spam so I missed a few) so having them all in one place with some added content made me a happy girl.

If you haven't read the Neighborly Affections Series, these have to be read first.  Tuesdays with Jay, named for Alice's Tuesday lunches with him, is Jay's point of view and thoughts on his and Henry's time with Alice, along with his fears, dreams, and wants for the future with her.  They give a "fly on the wall" perspective to the scenes within the other books, making them even more vivid.  Jay, being the more effusive of the two men, gives the reader heartfelt commentary on the progression of the relationship, laughs when you get his inner thoughts during lunches, and his private interactions with Henry allow a peek into their world that you don't get to experience since Alice is the storyteller in the other books.   This is a perfect addition to the trio's story.

I found this book to be positively endearing. Having previously read the Neighborly Affection series, I had already long ago fallen in love with the character of Jay. Of my long list of book boyfriends, Jay easily commands the top spot. Jay is the embodiment of goodness, purity, and love all wrapped up in a super sexy submissive package. The man is all heart. This glimpse into the inner workings of Jay’s mind only serves to underscore that fact. The reader can’t help but be completely drawn in by his vulnerability and openness. You just want to throw your arms around him and never let go. It is impossible to read this without it hitting you squarely in the feels. Like, ALL the feels. Jay, Henry, and Alice form the trio at the heart of the Neighborly Affection series, and their relationship—artfully chronicled through Jay’s eyes in this book—beautifully demonstrates the transformative power of love without boundaries. M.Q. Barber delivers superb writing and characters you can’t help but welcome into your heart. I honestly could not recommend this book more highly. Read this book. Read the Neighborly Affection series. You will not be disappointed, and you just might get a new book boyfriend out of the deal… but you’ll definitely have to share Jay with me.

I am so excited to be an advance reader of the latest book in the Neighborly Affection series "Tuesdays with Jay". I fell in love with each of these characters years ago, reading, and re-reading the series, eagerly anticipating the next episode in the saga. This perspective from the most talkative but least represented Jay is like the icing on the perfect cake of their relationship...and my relationship with them!

Like the other books in the series, this one is steamy! Just the right amount though, balanced with excellent character creation, realistic situations and real human emotions. The insight into Jay, the adorable puppy of the trio, is everything I've come to expect from M.Q. Barber's excellent wordplay and imaginative staging of both scenes and "scenes".

I'm also so thankful that the themes of polyamory, dominance and submission, love and emotional equinamy are treated so responsibly while still making it an enjoyable and downright fun read.

This is a fantastic read, and I highly recommend it. Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: A Neighborly Affection Companion

This is a story about 3 people that find each other, and fall in love with some masterful dominance. While the original series is told from Alice's POV, this book is told from Jays POV.

It took me a while to write this review because I ended up reading this book, then rereading the former books, then reading this book while reading books 1 and two as they happened. I am such a huge fan of this book and series.

So long story short, I LOVED IT! I can see the story from so many different aspects and it only made me love that lovable puppy in Jay even more. It explains some of his hesitancy in some situations and how aware he truly was of the dynamics that were never expressly mentioned to him by Alice.

If you loved the books, I would read this, and if you were on the fence about the books, I would still read this book. The understanding of Jay trying so hard to make everyone happy that this book presented only made me smile.

So just READ THE BOOK!! I give it 5 million stars out of 10 stars…if that’s an option, otherwise I guess 10/10 will do.

I'm always curious with series to discover if the books work as stand alone pieces or not. Not that it's necessary, but it just interests me to know. This one, of course, does not. But why would it?

As a true companion to the Neighborly Affection series, it is a joy to read alongside the original books. I had already read the rest of the series, but I allotted time for a re-read with this one, and I'm so glad I did. This book just adds a tremendous amount of depth to the storyline. Jay's take on the events that transpire as their relationship grows is an entertaining and emotional counter to Alice's. His internal monologue is, at times, both amusing and heartbreaking. This added narrative also provides vital clues into how Henry's mind works--the breadth of which we don't otherwise fully understand until book four.

I have to say, despite having read nearly all of these entries from the newsletter, I do envy new readers to this series, for their ability to add these little snippets into their first time reading experience. And I cannot wait for this story to continue.

Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories: A Neighborly Affection Companion is book 2.5 in the series. It is a full length read and gives us Jays perspective on the events that happen in previous books in the series.

I am absolutely obsessed with this series and was not disappointed with this new addition! I have always loved Jay's character but I love him even more now after getting a glimpse into his mind. The author allows us to see his vulnerability, fears, and hopes. It was great to see a different perspective. We were also able to get a glimpse into Henry's mind and were able to better understand his actions and motivations.

Overall, I have come to love all of the characters even more than I did before, and I did not believe that was possible! I recommend reading this in sequence with the other books to better understand the events that are being referenced. MQ Barber did fabulously with this book and I cant wait to see what she comes out with next!

In a world amidst darkness, Tuesdays with Jay is the light we need!

Where to even begin with our dear boy? I've long since been at the top end of the list of the biggest fans of the Neighbourly Affection series and this companion novel to the first two books, as well as a sneak peek into the trio's future, only adds to the brilliance of the series.

Jay is that perfect combination of sweet, protective, submissive and sexy. Having his POV of the lovers' journey added a whole new dimension to the original story.

As always, the writing is superb and well researched. One of the things I love most about M. Q. Barber's books is that I feel like I'm entering a whole new world and that over the course of the book or series, I become so comfortable and familiar that I never want to leave.

Thank you, M. Q, for another wonderful read, I cannot wait for the next instalment of the series.

MQ Barber's Tuesdays with Jay and Other Stories. A must read.
I have read all of the Neighborly Affection books. This is a collection of lunch dates between Jay and Alice and relayed in detail to Henry via Jay. This collection gives more insight into the hearts and minds of the trio from Jay's perspective. The trio a beautifully brought to life by Ms. Barber. Theirs is a love story of soulmates. Henry, Jay and Alice are entertaining and fierce in their unconditional love for each other. Ms. Barber's writing is thoughtful. witty and concise. A pleasure to read. Henry and Jay are hot, kinky and impossible not to love. Alice is a lucky lady being their perfect mate. I wish I has someone like Henry looking after me.

I was given an ARC to review. I'd like to thank Ms. Barber, her stories have brought many smiles, an few tears to my face and a lightness to my often times heavy heart. Please keep their stories coming.

I loved having the Tuesdays with Jay all together in one book. I looked forward to Ms. Barber's newsletters so I could see what he is up to and it always made my day. Now, I took the time & read it in tandem with the series & I loved it. I tell you, Jay still makes me so tired. You get a better understanding how much he wanted to rush the relationship in the stories from the newsletters, though it does come through in the series, and how Henry kept him on track. We also get a look into Henry's head. I absolutely loved that there is a description at the beginning of each chapter so it made it so easy to flip between the companion book and the series making me enjoy it even that much more. I cannot wait for more of these three!

I have been a fan of the trio since the very beginning! I was thrilled when MQ Barber started adding the shorts of Tuesdays with Jay to her newsletter. It was wonderful to see the trio's relationship from Jay's POV. It was so fun to really see what Jay wanted and felt through the first two books of the series. His growth in these stories is so thoughtful.
These stories follow along with books 1 & 2. It is highly recommended to read these stories along as you read the books; they give so much more perspective into the scenes, Jay's thoughts and feeling, and even into Henry.
Each book leaves you wanting more of this trio and rooting for their happily ever after. The stories include one of the trio years in the future.
Looking forward to more Henry, Alice, and Jay. Thank you MQ for such wonderful characters!

This book is a wonderful addition to the Neighborly series. It is best read either as an add-on after reading the other books in the Neighborly series, or consumed as a "side-dish" to the series. Either way, it reels you in, into the world of Jay, Henry and Alice, and all of their awkwardness, angst, lack of confidence, second guessing themselves and each other, and of course their love, desire, and support for each other. They slowly, too slowly if you ask Jay, arrive in their respective roles in the trio/triad, and we get to experience that process over the course of numerous Tuesday lunches with Alice and Jay.
Thank you MQ for the insight into Jay's mind. I hope we get to read this series, eventually, with everybody's voice, intermixed into one timeline

A wonderful and welcome addition to the Neighborly Affection series. This is one of my favorite series and the awesome little bites contained within this book add to the richness of the BDSM MMF love story told in the books. I keep up to date via M.Q. Barber's Tuesdays with Jay newsletters because I am always thirsty for another look into the lives of Jay, Henry, and Alice, but it's so great to have them collected here, clearly marked with which book and chapter they belong. There is a bit of brand new as well and the look into the future was really satisfying. (I still want more, more, more!) This is a must for any fan of the series. I loved it.

I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reader copy of this book.
