Elisabeth Christison (E.S. Christison) is the author of THE BLAMELESS, an award-winning and Amazon best-selling noblebright girl-power MG fantasy novel. It's sequel, THE TARNISHED, releases November 22, 2022.
A brilliant, simple and satisfying read. The newish concept of the Blameless magical gifts is a great fit with the image of an evil spawn that's Vaylec.
Engaging world of kingdoms of Predonia, Westlor, Estelon, and Alderia, what with all the secret Blameless town and their thousand-year-old involvement in the most touchy business of the kingdoms.
Love how the Blameless town seems to be the extension of natural realm. And the places' names are fantabulous: Kneads and Reads aka bakery, Guiltless Pleasure the tavern… Wow!
Q: Snow-peaked mountains surrounded them as far as the eye could see, with one large summit towering over the rest of them. In a valley, nestled between the mountains was the village of Mount Elrad. The evening sun was beginning its descent in the sky, streaking a plethora of colors over the valley before them. A narrow road weaved from the opening of the tunnel where they sat and circled downward into the village. The homes, buildings, and shops, although various sizes, were all built out of stone and wood. Instead of being blemishes amid the beautiful landscape, they appeared like an extension of the mountains and forests, adding to its charm. (c) Q: “Please, just call me Brie. Perhaps you can call me ‘queen’ and curtsey when I’m older.” (c) Q: “What kind of boy carries around tools for picking locks?” ... “The resourceful kind,” (c) Q: … the Guiltless Pleasure. It was perfect for a Blameless tavern. … The bakery, Kneads and Reads,...(c) Fabulous. Q: Several books littered the table between them. An easel with a partial painting had been cast off to one side. A beautiful four-poster bed with bright yellow bedding dominated the curved stone wall on the right, and a rich rose- and gold-trimmed rug decorated the floor. Dried flowers hung from the walls around the inside of the circular tower, and the fireplace blazed with warm, welcoming flames. On the floor in front of the fire, a small brown bunny slept in a basket. For a prison, it was lovely. (c) Q: “I want you to imagine the warmth of the sun on a very hot summer day,” Jarvis continued. “Bring to mind the way it feels as it shines down on you, warming your skin. Focus on the sun, and pretend it’s beaming into you. Imagine how terribly hot and thirsty you are, as it’s heating up your insides, straight through to your bones.” (c)
I was excited at the prospect of receiving a free book by a debut author in exchange for a free review, and was even more pleased after reading 'Blameless' by E. S. Christison.
'Blameless' is a well written story from beginning to end. And for a debut author, that's pretty impressive. I'll begin with the story:
Princess Briana's normal life in the castle is snatched away when her family is abruptly murdered in a seize of the castle. She is rescued by three men, whom she learns are 'Blameless', a group that is blessed with magic after performing an act of true selflessness. However, evil is afoot and has plans for Princess Briana.
My Thoughts: (Possible Spoilers)
World-Building: The story is told in fictional places such as Predonia and Village of Mount Elrad. I found the settings itself to be very standard for fantasy. Tunics. Eating meat, cheese, and potatoes. Riding horses. The audience can settle into this setting easily while the other components of world-building begin to impress. I particularly enjoyed the magic system.
As stated above, there is a special group of people referred to as the 'Blameless.' These people can use magic due to performing a selfless act. The power comes from 'The Three.' Terren, Solis, and Cael. (Earth, Sun, and Air.) And while each Blameless' power is unique to them, they all can do certain things such as create weapons for protection. What impressed me was the way magic is based in the elements, but is not limited to the typical way elemental magic is expressed. The ability to make items appear if you know where it is and return it is interesting. And while I do like moving objects with wind (such as arrows) I found that telepathy being a form of 'air' magic interesting. (Sending thoughts through air [only possible if the other person has this specific ability as well]) My favorite being invisibility being 'sun' magic. I found this very creative.
Characters: Personally, I found Princess Briana fun in the way most MG protags are. I think the cast stands out due to a wide variety of personalities. There is a big cast, which is something that I personally need in order to become immersed into a fantasy. I particularly love the set up of Flinton, Milly, and his sisters. I say that because the family could have easily been cast as Flinton and Milly as the parents and the girls as their children. The girls being his sisters was refreshing.
My favorite characters: Vaylec, Falen, and Taeo. Every good story needs a good villian and Vaylec was it for me. EVERY scene he was in had my whole attention. And Vaylec only got better as the story went on.
Taeo was that classic cocky, fun character that is irresistible. No crew is complete without a Taeo.
Falen is an interesting case as the audience never meets him but I have to give Christison credit. It takes talent to make someone, 1) love a fictional character, and 2) love a fictional character that is only mentioned by other fictional characters. Just from what is told about Falen made him one of my favorite characters and I honestly missed him.
Prose: I was impressed by how professional the prose was. While there wasn't ever a line that I thought was 'snappy' or made me lean back in my chair, it did avoid the pitfalls of amateur writers. It was clean, cliche-free, and uncluttered with adjectives and adverbs. And the professionality actually reminded me of prose in 'The False Prince' by Jennifer Nielsen.
Conclusion: 'Blameless' by E. S. Christison is a well-written debut full of magic and careful plotting. I would recommend it and currently look forward to the next installment. (Need to know what happens to my man Vaylec.)
Wow y’all. WOW. I loved this. It was AMAZING! Out of 160 some books I’ve read this year, this is in my top 5 I think. This is a debut book. I know! I got teary eyed several times-not from sadness, but from just the beautiful things happening that were so amazingly. I love this world, this magic system, & these characters so much! The magic system is so unique & creative! All the details, & the backstory, EVERYTHING-I absolutely love it. Princess Briana sees her whole family murdered(not a spoiler, it has just happened when the book begins). She escapes & is rescued by Flinton, Derek, & Kove who are very powerful. They take her to their secret home in the mountains. There she learns all about The Blameless, people who receive magical gifts from the Gods after they’ve done an act of selflessness. There she grows as a person & a fighter to speak. She grows also another family, new friends, & experiences & a world she never knew. She’s determined to seek justice for her family against the man responsible. There’s a mystery surrounding him, & certain things he’s doing. There’s also a mystery of sorts having to do w/Briana & what he plans for her. I adore Briana. What an amazing, tough, brave, smart, loyal, determined, fierce girl. To go through what she did, & see it w/her own eyes, & then to not only survive it, but become even stronger from it, & ...just wow. Love her. I love The Blameless-still love the whole idea of them. Flinton is my favorite. I love him so much. I also love Derek & Kove almost just as much. The sisters were amazing too. Cassie is something else lol love her. Taeo was also great. I loved the friendship dynamic b/n he, Cassie, & Briana. I also adored the relationship that grew b/n Briana, Flinton, Derek, & Kove. The family they became was so beautiful. This is full of action, adventure, magic, danger, suspense, family, friendship, & everything amazing. That ending too!! Sooooo good! I NEED the next book! I hope it comes out soon lol Since this is so amazing, I hope this is a long series also 😊🤞🏻 Such a beautiful cover. It brings my favorites to life, & I love it.😍😍 Highly highly recommend!!💜💜
👑 Introductory Thoughts 👑 The Blameless by E.S. Christison was a fun, fast-paced read. It was filled with fun characters with close-knit communities, Christian allegories, and finding bravery in the darkest places. The Blameless is definitely targeted toward younger audiences, mainly elementary schoolers, but nevertheless, I found it endearing.
.・゜-: ✧☾ ☽✧ :-゜・.
🪄 Pros / Likes 🪄 ★ The uncles: Flinton, Kove (love that name!), and Derek. They were so hospitable, kind, and welcoming to Brie, treating her as one of their own. I loved their humour and contesting to become her favorite "uncle"; so endearing. I think Kove was my favorite; his humor and banter with the others was just>>> ★ I also liked the magic system of the Blameless, like how it was a reward system based on pivotal, selfless acts performed in one's life. It wasn't anything too intricate, but still cool to read about. I thought the way the Blameless drew their power from the three divine beings in this book--Sun, Earth and Fire-- was pretty interesting. ★ Unlikely allies ★ Satisfying (though predictable) ending
.・゜-: ✧☾ ☽✧ :-゜・.
🌹🥀 Cons / Dislikes 🥀🌹 I think a reason I didn't find this book to be as satisfying as I'd hoped was because of the age I am now, and its target audience. The writing was simplistic; not anything that stood out, but still fine! Things this book could've used more of, in my opinion, is more character development, more developed and distinguished writing, slower pacing, more showing and not telling, creating characters that weren't too similar to each other (Flinton's entire family was copy-and-paste, I feel), and working on the worldbuilding a bit more. I understand the setting wasn't the main part, but establishing a strong setting is integral to fantasy books, especially since Brie was the princess of Predonia. And the mountain range / town they were hiding in was a little too mundane for my liking.
.・゜-: ✧☾ ☽✧ :-゜・.
🏹 Characters: 🏹 ★ Brie: she was a fine FMC. Adorable, likeable, peppy, optimistic even when the shadows crept in. Brie surprised me; the way she didn't let the enemy deter her and her bravery was respectable. Her grief was obviously understandable, but I loved how her coping mechanism was to lean on others and share her pain with those she loved instead of mainly bottling it up. ★ Flinton's sister and Kove's little brother: sweet companions to Briana. They were the typical "partners in crime" to Brie, teasing her and loving her at the same time. So cute ★ I loved Milly, though not gonna lie, I do suspect She was so warm and welcoming, and the meals she prepared just made my mouth water, ohmygrapes.
.・゜-: ✧☾ ☽✧ :-゜・.
📿 Content 📿 I had no issues with the content, though I will say, for a middle grade book, the violence in the first third of the book was more descriptive than other MG books I've read. It was semi-graphic, talking about knives and arrows lodged into chests, and other gory details. Those who read YA books should be fine with it. It wasn't extremely graphic, though just a heads up, the violence, while not prevalent in this book, was pretty extreme for a MG book (imo) during the beginning fight scene.
.・゜-: ✧☾ ☽✧ :-゜・.
🌰 In a nutshell: While The Blameless was a rather cut-out MG fantasy book, I still think it had important themes of holding onto courage in troubling times, found family, and learning how to cope with grief. The faith allegories and the palpable war between good and evil were still enjoyable! I recommend this book for elementary schoolers, boys and girls alike. Its fast pacing and short chapters will satisfy those looking for a cute, adventurous read.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
*Thanks to the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review*
Despite the tragically sad demise of the protagonist’s parents, this was an extremely wholesome and heartfelt adventure.
Surprisingly, there was a considerable lack of world-building, which you could fault, but, given that I’m not really a fantasy fan anyway, the lack of this fantasy element wasn’t something I was torn up about. In fact, this book seemed to favour historical exposition, however, I still felt as though it was lacking somewhat and whilst there was enough background information present to carry the plot of this book, I felt like it didn’t set up well enough for a future instalment.
Ultimately, the reason the structural fantasy elements of the book were weak was because there was a purposeful focus on character relationships and that was where the book shone. The protagonist’s relationship with her rescuers could only be described as precious and sweet. Any scene in which they bonded immediately made my day better and their interactions were a delight to see.
The antagonist’s motivation was odd to say the least. Not necessarily bad, just unconventional. I found him to be an extremely baffling character and I was constantly battling with myself on whether to label that as weak characterisation or genius writing. My problem with him mostly stemmed from the fact that he didn’t act anything other than nice towards the protagonist for more than 70% of their interactions. Although in the end he did cement his place as the villain rather than the confused antihero he otherwise appeared to be, so perhaps it was all a matter of timing.
In terms of writing, this was written extremely well. The story flowed well, although the pacing at times felt a little summative. The plot was cyclical but not in a boring way, instead it was quite poetic how the book ended almost identically to how it started.
In all, this was a very promising start to a new middle grade fantasy series with a fantastic found-family relationship.
Such a captivating middle grade fantasy debut! I started reading late at night which was not the best decision because I couldn't put it down! It is so action-packed right from the beginning, as we follow Princess Brie fleeing the kingdom's attackers. With the enemy chasing her, she has no choice but to place her trust on three unexpected saviors.
I was intrigued by the villain's motive and I love how the author slowly satisfied our curiosity. Vaylec is that kind of villain that is not insanely evil, but has a solid motive which for him makes complete sense. I think these are the best kind of villains, they try to win you over to their side with compelling arguments. I guess I am a little dark at heart since an alluring villain always calls to me.
I love Brie's protectors, specially Flinton, who like me loves to knit! How adorable is this huge man knitting away. The characters are definitely one of my favorite parts of the story, I love Brie's friendship with Cassie! Another aspect that really pulled me in is the entire Blameless society. It was so intriguing to learn their network and what kind of magic they possess. I will keep an eye out for more upcoming novels by this author!
Brilliant debut novel! I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of this highly anticipated novel and enjoyed every word. Order yours today.
Princess Brie’s provincial life is shattered in one night as Alderstone falls at the hands of a brutal betrayal. Her family is gone, her life is irreparably unwound, and she is now swept away by three strangers of unknown intent. Her path to royalty is permanently detoured, or so it would seem. Magic, adventure, and new friendships await as she rises from the ashes to take her rightful place among The Blameless.
In this series debut, Christison expertly transports the reader to a richly written fantasy world where self-sacrifice and honor are held above all. Well, at least for most. Fresh, original, and exhilarating, The Blameless is a must-have for your fantasy bookshelf.
E.S. Christison has written a story filled with adventure. I particularly appreciated her character development as I felt like I really got know Brie, her uncles, and all the other cool folks in her story. Strong premise fueled a well developed plotline.
Thrilling and packed with action from beginning to end, this book still maintained a wholesome tale with tons of feel-good moments while keeping the reader on the edge of the seat the entire time.
Brie is almost fourteen and a princess, but when her kingdom is attacked, and her family murdered in front of her, her life flips upside down. Managing to escape, she is discovered by men, who worked for her father. They promise to protect her and escort her back to their own town, where they will then decide what to do next. But these men are not as simple as Brie suspects; they are Blameless, which means that they hold magical powers. And that is only the beginning of the secrets which have been kept for her.
This book was so much better than I thought it might be. The first pages start with a very gripping scene as Brie flees from the castle, while her kingdom is being attack around her. Her panic and fears are understandable as well as her decision to trust three men, which she really knows nothing about. She has a lot to learn, but is determined to do her best. It's her spirit, which makes her easy to root for, as she's thrust from one difficult situation into the next. The entire time, she has to come to terms with the horror of her family's death, her own unexpected past, and the dangers she must face in order to get her kingdom back...and she is determined to do that.
There is definitely a ton of action in this book, but there's also quite a bit of heart. Brie meets friends and even has the chance to sink into a make-shift family and have some commotion with a few teens her age. But then, there are quite a few characters in the book, which give the tale a lovely richness and promise so much to come during the series. I appreciated the author's ability to keep Brie fairly true to her age, while still giving her just the right amount of maturity to make her a future ruler to root for. It's a difficult balance and the author makes it work.
Another bonus in these pages is that romance isn't there as far as Brie is concerned. As a young teen, she already has more than enough on her plate. This might change during the series (who knows?), but for now, she has enough to deal with...including a attacker to hate.
The friendships formed are inspiring, and the loyalty, trust and love on this front already touches the heart. It makes for a wonderful read to get lost in, and I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the series.
I haven't read a middle grade book in a long time. I loved this book and the beautiful world of the Blameless. Mount Elrad is described so well and is definitely the perfect Fantasy village. Its such a magical world to experience and how people gain their magic is so amazing. I love that their magic can be tied to the elements air, sun, and earth and how they weild their magic is unique to the person!
I have to say my top 3 favorite characters are Brie, Taeo, and Flinton. Brie is so brave and strong for someone her age and very inspiring. Taeo had me laughing the whole time and I loved his enthusiasm. I can definitely relate to Flinton. He cares about his family and even though he's big and tough he can also be a huge teddy bear. I highly recommend if your looking for a quick fun fantasy read!
Brie loves History and stories about a group of people known as the Blameless. They are selfless people who have been granted magical powers by the gods. They brought peace to the various kingdoms once upon a time ago. Being a princess Brie has always lived a sheltered life. So when the life she knew and her family is suddenly taken from her she finds herself now on the run with 3 strangers. They have displayed some strange abilities. Brie has come to realize that the Blameless may not just be in history books! (Genre:Middle Grade Fantasy)
I would give The Blameless a 5.5/5 star rating. I would give it this because I think that it was really good writing. My favorite part was when Brie's parents were killed. Another favorite part was when Brie met Kove, Derek, and Flinton. Brie, Kove, Derek, and Flinton are the main characters in this good fast-paced book. Also, this book ends with a cliffhanger. I want to read the next one.
Are you kidding me? This is a debut Novel? Middle grade fantasy 🏹⚔️🛡️🏰 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My 1st book of 2021 I'm not a hard fantasy-type person but this book right here 😩 my worry was for nothing. Gah I absolutely loved every second of this book and I'm sad I'm finished and have to wait for a sequel! Likable characters, I loved the world, I love the friendship! I just couldn't put it down. It set us up perfectly for the NEXT ONE 🙌🏿🤸🏿♂️!
Briana, Princess of Predonia, Flees for her life as her father's kingdom overthrown, Brie is rescued by Flinton, Derek, and Kove,There Brie learns about the Blameless, people who receive magical gifts from the gods after performing acts of supreme selflessness. Among the Blameless, Brie discovered mysterious power within her. She determines to seek justice for her family and one day to take back her people's freedom.
Derek is my favorite, kove and Taeo's Humor on point. So incredibly inventive that I felt my own imagination and the boundaries of what fantasy can be expand. es.christison Poured her heart and soul into this book, and it shows. I'm going to be suffering until the second book is so much as announced. I'll read anything this Queen publishes. She has my heart, she has my trust. Bring it on, the blameless, I'm waiting 🙏🏿.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review!
I really enjoyed reading this. The action starts off immediately, and I loved how the story unfolded. Brie is a great main character, her confidence in herself grows as the story progresses, and she becomes an amazing headstrong character. The magical system was easy to follow, and the powers of the blameless were very interesting. I loved that even though this was a short story, a lot was packed in. I am definitely excited to see where the rest of the series goes! Also, Kove, Flinton, and Derek are such cinnamon roll characters!! I would definitely recommend picking up this book!
One of my favorite MG bookstagrammers, Belle's Middle Grade, posted about this book, and I was immediately drawn in. I loved the idea of uncle-figures and wonderful, diverse relationships! I bought this book on a total whim and was rewarded in full. I can't even describe what makes this book so incredible and memorable, but I would say the unique magic system and beautiful relationships throughout have something to do with it. Also, the story line didn't follow any of the tropes I'm used to in high fantasy-type MG novels, which was very pleasantly refreshing.
I'm so happy I picked up this book, and I'm very excited for Book 2! Bravo, E.S. Christison!
Opening Line: “Lightning flashed across the distant night sky.”
Favorite Lines: “Lastly, Brie retrieved her lock-picking set from the folds of her ruined gown. She had grown accustomed to always carrying it, just as Taeo had instructed. He would be so proud of her. Brie rolled her eyes. Who was she kidding? He would probably be proud of himself for being correct.”
The Review: “The Blameless” is book one of author E.S. Christison's expected series which follows main protagonist Princess Briana's adventures in the kingdom of Predonia.
I say Predonia is a kingdom, but in the first few pages, we realize along with Briana (Brie) that its monarchal leader has been deposed by an upstart madman with chaos on his agenda. Brie flees the castle having survived the murder of her family, but finds herself completely lost and helpless in the surrounding capitol city of Aldestone. We feel Brie's anxiety and hopelessness as the pages unfold until she is aided by someone she never expected. Her savior is Flinton, one of the three Blameless who we come to absolutely flipping adore as the book goes on. I will not spoil everything, because Brie's interaction with the Blameless and other characters is the SOUL of this book. Allow me to expand.
E.S. Christison has succeeded marvelously in her characterization of not only the main cast, but also the supporting characters in this book. Brie is all things readers look for in a protagonist for an introductory book. She is relatable and parallel to the reader in that we are experiencing all this for the first time at the same time as her. We learn about the world and its magic through her experiences at the same speed and follow her same highs and lows. She is our eyes and ears of this world, and she allows us to retain all history, the constraints, and the interactions of the world without having to go through large exposition dumps (much appreciated). Also, her arc is full as she goes from scared and unsure to resourceful and strong, just as we do as readers.
Another positive I want to talk about is the supporting cast of this book. Although having the well-crafted cover art for the book and an internal map as visual guides, there was no shortage of evoking Christison's vision on the page. She brilliantly describes the characters and various settings letting us know exactly how they look. Illustration through words is one of Christison's strong points as I never once needed to second guess how a character or place appeared. Her use and repetition of certain adjectives really gave the characters their own feel too. As if the words to describe them were their own. Flinton as a massive man, Kove as handsome and suave, and Derek as the more mysterious and stoic leader. She did a marvelous job with those three in particular. I knew exactly how they thought and acted, and even who I want from Hollywood to play them in the inevitable motion picture rendition of "The Blameless"
The last thing I want to touch on is the magic in this world. I don't want to give away too many secrets, but I will say that it was a new and fresh spin on an old trope. In Predonia, the Blameless possess magic gifted to them by their three gods. From what I was able to discern of the first book, all the Blameless have similar powers in their source, but quite individualistic and specific in their execution. So, while I've read and seen many works of literature where the characters have abilities tied directly to them, the Blameless have very defined limits and origins of how their talents (Kove calls them gifts) are obtained. "It's their deed that makes them worthy, not their family or their status". Indeed, this is true, and the way their gifts are acquired and utilized is what separates this sensation from other titles.
This is a great book! I mean it! The fantasy genre has a talented writer on the horizon with a knack for telling an interesting story with harrowing escapes and ideas for plenty of imaginative magic. Her charter building is also on point with the "greats" of the fantasy genre. I would not be surprised at all to see THIS book and its presumed followers to be turned into a visual media such as a TV show or series of some kind. We have yet to see any monsters or mythological beasts in Predonia, but you never know what's waiting in the surrounding hills and forests of Mount Elrad.
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in sword and sorcery at the YA/MG level. The only reason I include MG is because our main protagonist is 13-14 at the time of the book's conclusion (I believe she had a birthday during the story). Recommended age would be 12 and up due to some violence. This is limited to some deaths such as patricide and a public execution. Also, the bad guy open-hand slaps a minor at one point which may trigger younger readers. Other than the expected violence for the fantasy genre, parents should have no worries with this book and should encourage their kids to celebrate its themes of triumph over adversity and the bonds of family.
One last thing: I like to add this "one last thing" section as an insight to how weird I am when I read books. Every time I read the character Taeo's name in the text, I automatically changed it to "Taco" in my head. I have no idea why! But it made for some interesting interractions.
Final Review: 4.7 magically summoned notebooks out of 5 (4.7 / 5)
The story starts in the midst of an invasion. All we know is the princess is trying to escape the attack. This was slightly disorientating but none the less the high stakes set up was interesting. And thankfully by chapter 3, we get a lot more answers, which I thought was particularly well done. This I feel would certainly reel in a middle grade audience and as an adult I appreciated it too. The world building, was subtle not a lot of info dumping which was great. I prefer when the world is slowly unraveled for us. I really liked the dynamics between the gang, and how protective they were of Princess Brie, it quickly becomes apparent that she isn’t just a duty to them. All the characters are likeable and engaging. I found the writing style to be the perfect balance of simple prose and rich description. One allowed the story to flow while the other brought the world vividly to life. I thought the slight twist in how the elemental magic manifests in this world was also interesting. This is a book about discovery; of who you are and what you can become, it has magic, adventure and is a wholesome story about good and evil. A great start to the series. I can see middle graders really enjoying this. Can I also quickly mention how much I love a good map? I really appreciate it when one is added to a fantasy book, really helps me visualise everything much better!
The Blameless follows Briana the Princess of Predonia as she flees for her life when her fathers Kingdom is overthrown. Protected by Flinton, Derek and Kove, she discovers the Blameless. A group of magical people that receive their gifts after an act of selflessness. After discovering her own gifts, Briana works to master them in order to take back her kingdom, get justice for her family and save her people.
The author weaves a fantastic tale, with vivid imagery and twists and turns you never see coming. The magic system is well thought out and completely unique. The world building itself is very well thought out and overall it was a fantastic read.
It’s a truly impressive piece for a debut novel and I can’t wait to get my hands on book 2.
I’d also like to thank the author for sending me a copy of this book to review. And for bearing with me when I got delayed in starting to read this.
This is a great book, truly magical! The plot is engaging and the characters are so warm and endearing. The abundance of action, the lively dialog and vivid description make it play like a movie in your head. It is hard to put down! I laughed and cried, felt the joy and the anger and suffered the loss. There is the satisfying triumph of good over evil but not till after a long hard struggle, but the victory wasn't complete. I'll have to put my hand over my heart and wish as hard as I can for the next book and hope it doesn't take too long coming! Thank you E. S. Christison!
Wow, I cannot believe that this is a debut novel! It was just so good! I’m a sucker for a good fantasy and The Blameless promises a wonderful new series. And even though this is a middle grade book it’s a bit higher level so all of my YA lovers out there will love this book just as much as the younger crowd! And I mean, anyone who loves a great fantasy book will instantly fall in love with this one.
The characters are all so endearing and amusing. I really fell in love with all of their bantering and just found myself really enjoying the read because of it. There was such a great balance between the story and the characters. The hardships that our princess has to face throughout the story show just how much something terrible can strengthen you.
One thing I have to say is that I really need the next book! I devoured this book and just wanted the story to continue. It’s just such a wholesome story that I hope many people discover!
You can view my full review on my blog! I also post about a lot of different types of books!
Even though this book written for YA, I liked it, too! I appreciate the detailed description of the world of Predonia and it's surroundings, the characterization of the people and the relationships and emotions that surround Briana and her rescuers. Several reviewers have given synopses, so I won't go into the story line again, but it was quite the adventure! I read it in just two sittings and am looking forward to the sequel!
Awesome middle grade fantasy. The emotions felt very real for the age of the characters and it really helped sell the idea that Brie was only 13/14
Princess Brie's life is turned upside down when she witnesses the murder of her parents and brother. Forced to flee in the middle of the night she finds herself in the company of 3 men with magical powers who are willing to do anything to protect her...
Well, first I’m very grateful for giving me the opportunity to read this wonderful book before its release. The story is really magical, full of fantasy, I recommend it to all those people who want to start with the fantasy genre, it is light and interesting story. It starts with a lot of action from the first page, and every I read the chapters, I had several memories when I was little, that I imagined and still do it in that I lived many adventures and dream that I had magical powers, wow, in truth that the good memories returned to me with this story, it’s a good start to this debut of this wonderful author, who by the way is a sweet person.
I really liked the description of the events and the characters got me a lot of smiles and I got attached to them especially to Flinton, always protecting little Brie. And of course, Derek and Kove, but I connected more with Flinton. We all need to be brave and face our battles and this book teaches you this. Of course I can’t wait for the second part, I need to know more about this story. Thank you @es.christison for showing me your world full of magic and adventure.
a fine middle grade fantasy that I enjoyed; 3.5 actual rating, because I wish the characters had been a bit smarter, rounded up because it's the sort of book that's like candy for horse loving, magic loving 10-11 year old girls in particular
This magical debut middle-grade fantasy is a delightful and exciting read. The story follows Princess Brie on her frightening escape from attackers who have destroyed her family. She is put in the path of three mysterious strangers and must navigate the course of trust, betrayal, friendship, and fear as she comes to terms with what she has lost, and what she might have to gain. The characters were nicely drawn out, with plenty of engaging banter between them. I enjoyed the wholesome, innocent feel of the story which was satisfyingly balanced with just enough evil to keep the action moving along at an enjoyable pace. Christison's writing style was accessible and lucid which was perfect for a middle-grade audience. I had a lot of fun reading this charming novel and look forward to reading book two!
Right from the first chapter, I fell head over heels for the characters. I felt so many emotions while reading this book, and that's rare for me. Everything about it made me excited. The characters, the worldbuilding, the story, and the way the writing ties it all together. I declare The Blameless a Must-read for all ages.
If I could rate this 4.5 stars on here I would. I really enjoyed this book. It felt like a perfect mix of a cozy fantasy with the good drama and action of most high fantasy books.
The main characters feel like a warm hug. I loved every one of them.
The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because of pacing and because I wish there had been more story in the last few chapters, but honestly it was a pretty great story!
I did receive a copy of this book for review from NetGalley, but all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
THE BLAMELESS is a riveting, yet heart-wrenching, yet joy-inducing story of the struggles (and victories) placed upon the shoulders of a brave, strong, smart young girl by the name of Brie. Brie befriends many incredibly lovable characters which readers are endeared to instantly. Each turn the story takes has you glued to the pages, unable to peel yourself away from it. As you plunge deeper into this newfound world of magic and mystery, expect to find yourself laughing so hard you end up crying, or sobbing hysterically, or smiling so big your face hurts at any given point in time. It is an extraordinary book that any book lover (or even someone who is not so fond of books) will enjoy wholeheartedly. It seems almost magical that a book could be so amazing! 😉
I know this isn’t my usual fantasy grade level, but I was sold on the idea and I think it is great for this age group. Keeping that in mind as I read led to a good reading experience and I’m excited for book two.
Briana, our lovely FMC, was wonderful. I loved that she acted and responded appropriately for her age group, but that it also didn’t bring on any annoyance. She’s going through a lot of growth and processing very hard things. I also loved that she wasn’t immediately good at everything, I liked seeing her learn new things and how to handle her power.
Her found family group was full of the kindest souls. I loved seeing them all together and enjoyed the lighter dynamics they brought to the table. There’s great father-like figures and friends Briana’s age that she’s able to connect with.
I enjoyed the plot and getting some snippets of the antagonists point of view to see inside his mindset too. There’s plenty of action and moments that keep those pages turning.
