A Sampling of Life, One Taste at a Time: A Food Memoir by Martha Wallace is a captivating read that entices both the mind and the taste buds. I have to say that I don’t normally read food memoirs, so I wasn’t sure if I’d love this book. I’ve read a few, but they aren’t my first pick reads. This book has a lot going for it, and it might make me want to read more food memoirs.

From the very beginning, it has a captivating acknowledgments section and nostalgic way of storytelling that leaves the re

Knowing how I am when it comes to books that have food as a main theme, I took every possible precaution. I had a full meal before opening the book, and thoroughly brushed my teeth so that I would not be tempted to snack my way through. I think it is fair to say that I was as objective as I could possibly have been when I started reading.

Yet, my minty-fresh mouth was watering before I had even completed the first chapter. The book is filled with dishes and descriptions so vivid that I could alm

Have you been yearning a vacation during these trying times? Are you tired of baking and cooking the same things out of boredom? Do you need some type of inspiration, whether it be writing, reading, cooking, building memories within your family, friends, and yourself? I’m sure you’ve at least answered ‘yes’ to the first question.

With that said, this book will touch your soul with every turn of the page. Martha took me away from my couch to another land, The Motherland. She shared memories of her

A completely immersive story that takes you straight into the lives of the people it's about. You also get to taste whatever they're eating -- at backyard BBQs, huge family gatherings, downhome restaurants both in the U.S. and abroad, farmers markets or even out in a sugar cane field as the author remembers her grandparents. There are lots of recipes to try out, and the secrets of chow chow -- a southern delicacy that has garnished many a sandwich in Georgia where the author lives. There's joy, ...more

A Mouthwatering Read

I so enjoyed Martha's "A Sampling of Life." I've never salivated while reading a book until I read this one. I teach a young writers summer camp, and one of my students wanted to write a cookbook; I let her borrow "A Sampling of Life" for inspiration. It's the perfect combination of narrative and how-to. Kudos to Martha on this wonderful work.
