Ever since his wife died in a fire, fireman Luke’s priority had always been his son. He didn’t want to find anyone else to share his life with. Until he meets Irene and his priorities begin to change.
Irene didn’t think she had time to date. Not when she had two young children and an ex-boyfriend who refused to let go of the fact their relationship ended years ago. Things like that can be a bit of a mood killer. Her focus now is making sure her children aren’t caught in the middle. Then when she’s caught in a fire and rescued by gorgeous firefighter Luke who makes her body heat up more than the fire, she wonders if maybe she had been a little too hasty.
The chemistry between them is strong. Very strong. Both of them come with baggage, but it’s nothing they can’t handle. Although someone is very determined that their fledgling relationship doesn’t get off the ground...

I promise I didn't select this book to read based upon the title or the keywords. It came across my Amazon scroll and it had all 5-star (I know) reviews. So being the curious person that I am I wanted to know why.
Schoolteacher, Irene Manoli (I know) has two kids by her ex-boyfriend Freddy who wants to get back together with her, though he won't give up his playboy ways. It's a classic case of wanting what he can no longer have! Irene meets Luke Pinnegar (a widowed fireman) when he saves her from a fire at her school. Luke isn't without his own female octopus that refuses to take his subtle rebuffs and hints of non-interest. What will it take? If you haven't gotten him in bed in three years, then it's safe to say ... "it ain't gonna happen"! Move on to a sure thang, girl! They're out there, look at Freddy.
I didn't connect with Irene and I didn't like her way with words ...
After being rescued the very first thing she say is ... “I thought you were never going to get here.” ME: Instead of ... "Thank you for coming to my rescue"!
Weeks later, Luke says ... “I was wonderingif you wanted to go out for something to eat at some point? Have a drink, or just go for a walk or something. I know I’ve just picked you out of a fire,” he added, hurriedly, “And it’s not something I normally do, but…”
She says ... “Are you asking me out?” Me: Seems pretty crystal to me!
He says ... “Sorry, I’m not very good at this. It’s been a while since I’ve asked anyone out.” She says: “How long?” He says: “Close to fifteen years.” Irene laughed. “I suppose that lets you off the hook. Not the smoothest of offers, I’ll admit that.” ME: She had a smooth operator and what did that get her? Heartache!
Then, this happens ... “Just so you know, I don’t put out on a first date.” “Neither do I.” Luke smiled. “But I’ve wanted to kiss you since you stepped out of that ambulance.” She thinks ... Her decision not to have sex on a first date had gone out the window a long time ago. Then she says ... “Do you fancy staying the night?” she whispered. “What did you have in mind?” ME: Really? Luke. Really?! “I have a spare room down here, away from the kids. But as long as you’re quiet.”
As things get heated up ... Luke says ... “I love how responsive you are.” “You’re certainly forward,” Irene panted, as she reached for his sweater. ME: Really? Irene. ROTFLMAO.
It felt like this story was revised and they forgot to get rid of the words and phrases, such as offence, holdall, childminder and fancy staying the night and other phrases which screams British Alert. Love the Brits! Love Brit TV. The heroine on the cover doesn't match the description (I know) and the story felt very stilted. That is all.
I’m going to say this I already knew something was up with that Leigh girl. Especially when it came to her brother Travis. Both are some weird individuals. But I dang sure was GLAD when Travis... didn’t agree to let things slide with they finally got caught in the act.... for the third time with the third fire he started. He actually told the reasons behind why he did it.
The first fire with Annie and Danny - Luke's wife and son. Was because of his psycho a$$ sister smh 🤦🏽♀️. Leigh and her obsession with Luke someone she couldn’t have and still didn’t get even after Annie died.
The second fire at the high school - with Irene. Because Travis didn’t like that Irene was going to tell on - write him up, for cheating. So he thought it was cool to try to kill her thank Goodness that one didn’t work. What tripped me out was the fact that Travis was there like everyone else; and tried to tell Luke to go to the English classroom - Irene classroom. When Irene wasn’t there. If it wasn’t for Susan, Irene colleague I know that Irene would’ve been dead all because of Travis. Which he wanted smh 🤦🏽♀️.
I thought he was a daMNNNN fool for that one. Because you ruin a whole school just because you cheated on a pop quiz like that right there was just ridiculous.
On top of that don’t get me started on the third fire that happened with - Irene, her daughters Alexis and Lydia, and Luke's son Danny.
Then learning that Leigh turned off the warning bell about the fire. I was glad that Irene told Danny to call his dad because if he didn’t I know they would’ve been blown up in smoke. That would’ve hurt both their families minus - Irene ex-boyfriend - the girl's father Freddy.
Which I am getting to soon after I talk about Leigh crazy A$$.. so like I said Leigh was just psycho like OMG! Like she was sooo obsessed that she did everything she could to get rid of Irene. That she didn’t even care that should’ve killed three kids that didn’t even pass the age seven. Like omg; I wanted to slap fire from her a$$.
When Luke told her so she didn’t even care about it especially when it came to Danny who already had nightmares. To be in a second fire due to the same two horrible individuals. Then I’m top of that he had to deal with also withdrawing and having more of bad nightmares. Lord knows I was glad when I learn that Leigh got fifteen years over her had she deserved it. So did her brother who got fewer years than she did.
So with that being said. On to Irene freaking ex-boyfriend Freddy that man was just horrible. He didn’t even give to flying ducks about his daughters. He was busy worrying about Irene and getting back with her to control her and manipulate her like he was doing when they are together. Lord knows I was glad when his brother finally came to the realization of how horrible Freddy was and who was telling the truth. I did want to see how that custody battle was going to go even though I know that Irene would’ve won it.
Negative First: The title is awful, I passed over this book several times. Where did this story take place? In the early chapter when they were talking about the time they said, half-seven, another time half-five. One time they said kinder instead of child. I only knew they were referring to a child because I have read some Amish stories and they say Kinder instead of child/children. Positive: I love mystery and suspense and this had that. There was some domestic abuse from Irene's ex-boyfriend. I wanted someone to punch Freddy in the mouth. Happy that Luke and Irene got their HEA and a blended family.
Loved that the race aspect didnt play a huge role. It never needs to and sometimes people use it up but this was done well (as in barely mentioned) Character development could be better but the basis of a story was there. The beginning and middle were pretty well done but the writing just seemed rushed & fast from middle to end to insert some $ex and then close up the HEA. For the price, i would have liked the longer story. There are enough characters to build a slower burn. Interested to read more from this author but if all of her work is this short and rushed and overpriced, i might rethink it
It was a nice quick read. Some editing issues but nothing major. My biggest complaint was not being able to figure out what country these people lived in. The speech was British but supposedly these characters are in the US. We don't call a stove a hob in the United States! It was jarring to say the least and I spent every few minutes second guessing the country based on the conversations between characters. Otherwise I enjoyed the story.
Oh WOW! This is definitely worth every moment it's emotional, suspenseful and such a thriller. I really enjoyed the characters their relationship is delightful with sizzling hot chemistry. There is plenty of drama and it will keep you turning page after page with such excitement that can't stop reading this story.
I enjoyed reading this book! It was sad at the beginning, but as I read, I figured out right away who did what. I even suspected the second person correctly! l loved the chemistry between Luke and Irene and how fast they tell for each other! I think that readers will enjoy reading this book! I definitely recommend to others!
This book was actually good. The ridiculous title almost made me pass on it, but after reading the reviews I thought I would give it a shot. The main characters were great together and they got their HEA.
Why ruin a great concept by doing thus... The story started off with great intrigue and bit wow then bang all nonsense and bits of nothing and not real meat of the how justly and end...ugh
I guessed the evil two right away. But rarely see the side where a family member refuses to see the truth in writing. There were some spelling errors. Text written using England's English accounts for some of that. Otherwise, well written.
This story was a good one. I truly enjoyed it because it made me smile, laugh, cry, and gasp. I was so happy for both Irene and Luke. And it hurt my heart to read about Danny and his mother. But it was wonderful that Luke was there. I loved this read.
After the death of his wife, Annie, and near death of his son, Danny in a fierce fire; Luke never thought he would find love again. Irene is trying to loose herself from an abusive ex who happens to the father of her two daughters. Fate brings them together when Irene is rescued by Luke from a fire at the school where she teaches English. They both have “clingers-Freddy and Leigh- who tries to hinder their relationship from budding. Yet, the fire at Irene’s house which put her and the girls and Luke’s son in danger, reveals the perpetrators to ALL the fires! This fiery HEA will keep you on the edge of your seat!🦋
