Actually very interesting. If you are a fan of statistics, sports, or baseball, or just like knowledge, the physics, the players, or even noting the odds this is worth it.
I picked this up as a free meditation book on Audible. I was skeptical about it being calming, because it's a baseball story. Something about the reader's voice and the way he read the story put me to sleep almost immediately. Three different times!
It was an interesting story, so I'm not sure why it worked, but it did. I had to go back and listen to it when I wasn't sleepy at all. Great story with great information, told beautifully. But, it does double as a sleep aid.
This is a bedtime story narrated by Nick Jonas, meant to soothe you to sleep, boring you with baseball stories, like something a grandpa would tell you before bed. Didn't think it would get me because there were too many interesting tidbits that caught my attention, but lo and behold, I did calmly fall asleep at some point during. Nick was a soothing narrator as well.
Hooter: An analysis of the baseball swing between technically correct DiMaggio and the unorthodox Ted Williams - both greats in their own rights
This is marked as a bedtime story under Audible with Nick Jonas narrating it. I wasn't sure why till I heard Nick narrate. He manages to get you to want to doze off with the lullaby tone and speed he uses. For baseball fans, this is a nice quick look into the technical differences in their swing styles and the framework of a good swing and James McGirk does a good job in being able to make the reader/listener visualise the swing but it pretty much stops at that.
Being a very short one, you get through fine, any more and you'd feel like you are sitting in the Baseball theory 101 class.
I got this for free on Audible. It's advertised as a "Bedtime Story." It's narrated by Nick Jonas, which was the real reason I picked it up--Nick Jonas is freakin' hot. I'm only seven years older than him. That's not too much, is it?
I am a huge baseball fan, and I currently am going through some major baseball withdrawal (go Braves!), and I played softball when I was young. The book goes through the technicalities of the baseball swings of two of baseball's all-time greatest players: Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. DiMaggio had a technically perfect swing in every imaginable way whereas Williams was constantly adjusting his swing, sometimes in ways that would make batting coaches cringe. In fact, even I was cringing as they would describe some of his batting stances. But his batting success is undisputed. It obviously worked for him.
Nick's voice was very soothing, and I honestly had a hard time keeping my eyes open while listening to it--not because of the content, but because I guess it truly is a "bedtime story." James McGirk wrote the book, but Nick's job was to make the Audible listeners go to sleep. He almost succeeded with me, a notorious insomniac.
There is some very interesting baseball history including in here, but I'm afraid that this book would not be very interesting to someone who is not a hardcore baseball fan or who played baseball (or softball) at a serious level at some point in their lives. On that basis, I give this book three out of five stars.
This was listed under bedtime stories in Audible, and although Nick Jonas did a superb job with the narration, this would've only caused you to fall asleep, if you honestly had very little to no interest in baseball. Being a former high school softball player who thoroughly enjoyed the sport, I found myself rather intrigued on the history given between that of two of Baseball's historical players (DiMaggio and Williams) and the techniques described in such concise, yet thorough detail. I could clearly visualize some of the movements, positions and even scenery as they were being described.
Needless to say at this point, I didn't fall asleep, but honestly enjoyed this short "bedtime story." And...would recommend this to anyone who loves to play or simply watch the sport.
Now, I feel compelled to re-watch for the umpteenth time, (one of my all-time favorite movies) "A League of their own."
Great story & excellent narration. Definitely will re-read or listen again.
Meant to help you sleep and that it did, I enjoyed the narration and the topic was the right level of interesting where it doesn't keep you up but distracts you for just long enough
Note: I am NOT an audiophile, but I am going to make criticisms as if I were. In fact, I am losing my hearing. I have blank spots at certain frequencies and this will affect the sounds that I hear. I also have Tinnitus which means there is always a low hum in the background of my hearing no matter what else is going on audio-wise. With all that in mind, here we go.
The audio was poor considering what this audiobook is for... going to sleep. The facts are real and the writing is good. Even the narrator does a good job as far as I can tell. it seems to be the audio engineer that fell down on the job. It was annoying.
I probably would have rated this audiobook 3 stars had the audio been better. maybe even 4 stars. I can't tell. The audio got in the way.
Even though I'm not much of a baseball fan, I found this audio-story rather interesting. Certainly those who know more about swinging the baseball bat will find this narrative about two famous baseball players (Joe DiMaggio & Ted Williams) quite appealing. Others will find it, as touted, a bedtime story intended to help one drift off to sleep. I'm not sure why this book was in my Audible account but I listened and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.
This story is intended to help the listener sleep by listening to the calm and quiet voice of the reader. It worked so well for me that I had to try over three nights to hear the whole thing. The story is about baseball, two main baseball greats, and some excellent tips on how to be a good hitter. Well done on Audible.
This meditation audio had the opposite effect on me. Instead of putting me to sleep, it kept me awake. Not sure why it was included in the sleep meditation collection through Audible.com, unless it was his soothing voice but listening to a narrative only kept me awake.
This is a summary of Joe Di Maggio's and Ted Williams' careers. It explores also hitting techniques. The narration is very very flat and does not give any depth to the reading, however if you love baseball as I do, the book is pretty interesting.
I enjoyed listening to this! It was a great listen to unwind at the end of my day and I learned some new baseball facts as well. Nick Jonas has a calm, relaxing voice and did a nice job with the narration.
Nick Jonas did a fantastic job narrating this story on Audible about baseball’s most famous hitters, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. I learned so much about how to place your body for the perfect swing that I am tempted to give it a try myself. LOL - but my eyesight sucks!
This is hands down the most boring Audible book I’ve ever heard. If you can’t sleep a few minutes into baseball facts you’ll be out. I gave this book 5 stars because it did its job of being the best bedtime story. Three times I’ve used it to fall asleep and three times it’s worked like a charm.
If you are a kid who loves baseball and stats, this is the book for bedtime. Otherwise, it is a great listen while you work out. Nick Jonas is a great narrator.
I legitimately listen to this almost every night and it makes me pass out. I haven't gotten all the way through it, but am giving it 5 starts because, god damn does it help me fall asleep.
I love baseball and Nick Jonas reading time me, I mean come on. His voice is very soothing. I’m gonna try it tonight when I go to sleep tonight to see if it works and lulls me to sleep.
