Alissa anticipated a normal shift at Mass General Hospital until the zombie outbreak spread through Boston like wildfire. When patients and staff in the ER begin to die, reanimate, and attack the living, Alissa must fight her way to safety to avoid becoming one of the ravenous hordes.
To survive, Alissa must develop instincts and skills she did not realize she had and overcome fears no human were meant to face.
Escaping the hospital will be tough enough, but can Alissa survive the nightmare gripping Boston and make it out of the city to safety?

This is a fast-paced and gripping book. Alissa, the main character, is not the most likeable, and how she was still alive at the end of the book, I honestly don't know. It is action-filled from the beginning, and that is what carried me through to the end. I don't think I will carry on with the rest of the series at this time.
Alissa isn't that likable of a main character so I'm not continuing this. That and the misspelled words throughout. Author take note: It's VW Passat, not Pissat.
So...at the beginning of the book there is an author's note thanking the people that encouraged him go back to writing zombies...I am befuddled as to why anyone would do that.
The first page or so is okay. And then we add the zombies and it all goes to shit. Both in the book and out. So, apparently, the police and hospital staff are the last to know about the zombie issue...Which makes zero sense. No one seems to be using their brain. Then suddenly, Nurse Alissa, who has been kind of meek and wishy washy up to this point, starts calmly killing zombies with the cops gun, and when her best friend is bitten, she just turns and kills her too. This read like she had already been in the zombie apoc for a long time. She has no idea whether her friend can survive or not and while she was dillydallying over whether to ask a doctor on a date just five minutes ago, she doesn't need to even think about it before blowing her best friend's brains out. Now she has turned into Zombie Slayer Girl and has no second thoughts for anyone else that she knows or is supposed to be taking care of. No sadness over slaughtering her best friend. No tears. No confusion on what is going on. No doubting thoughts. Nope. She's gotta kill anyone that gets in her way, and she's gotta get to x place and...This is in the first few pages.
Also, from the very beginning she starts internally calling them "deaders" and I cannot even begin to describe how very annoying I found that. And then it was just used constantly, over and over, internally and in conversation, and everyone just acted like hey, deaders is totally what we would use, not zombies.
Will not be continuing the series and probably will not be picking up another book by the author. Sad, the blurb had so much promise.
I read a lot of zompoc books, so I am always looking for something fresh and different. This book fulfills that on several levels.
First of all, every fan of this genre wonders what would be the worst place to try to survive a zompoc. After reading this book, I think a hospital would be one of the worst! Alissa is a nurse working in a Boston hospital when an outbreak hits and people start turning into monsters in the ER. Alissa has to make the tough decision of whether to try to save the patients or herself. I enjoyed her internal dilemma as she tries to do what it right.
It's also nice to have a strong female character who is capable of taking care of herself in a tough situation. And, I loved the inclusion of her cat, Archer! Anytime there is a pet involved, the book goes up my estimation. The story is fast-paced, the characters are well-written and there is plenty of zombie encounters to satisfy the diehard fan. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to follow Alissa and friends as they try to survive.
The narrator did a good job with her different accents and voices and her performance added a lot to the book. I was given the chance to listen to this book by the author/narrator/publisher and chose to review it.
Short, fast paced, zompoc thriller. Baker, the author, obviously knows the city where this takes place and makes it real as his protagonist, Alissa, has to escape through the streets, shops and alleys of downtown. There are lots of narrow escapes as she dodges zombies while trying to get home and rescue her cat. Characters are a little flat but its a short book so there isn't much time to fill them out fully. The main character makes some big leaps in her comprehension of what is going on, before its really clear what is going on. And somehow she is a marksman with a 9mm she palms off a dead state trooper. One must assume that she was a paranoid psychopath before the zompoc started since she starts killing people (not just zombies) literally within 30 minutes of the outbreak, which as far as she knows could just be a crazy thing at her hospital. She does randomly break down and cry about it later though, so I guess that makes it ok. She also confesses to a police officer friend who, rather than arresting her for murder, tells her she did the right thing. Overall, a fun book. I'll probably read the next one in the series.
It's a fast paced romp through the zombie apocalypse in Boston, Mass, with Nurse Alissa. This story explodes into action within the first few pages, and doesn't stop. It kept my interest throughout, and I finished it in an afternoon. It's quick and fun read.
There were many scenarios Alissa had to make her way through, so many that, perhaps, character development was a bit of an afterthought. She, oftentimes, comes across as callous in her approach to the disasters all around her, though shock and simple survival may be the problem instead. As this is to be a series, I'm sure we'll see more growth as we readers travel along with her in the ZA.
If you aren't looking for anything "deep" and enjoy adventures in "zombieland", you'll enjoy this first in Scott Baker's new series.
I've had this book on my Too Read list for almost a year! I listen on Audible, so I had to wait until it was available. Sigh............................too bad it fell short. It read like a bad 'B" movie on the SYFY channel. A nurse gets a chunk of her gace bitten off (enough to expose her nasal cavity AND cheek muscle), but she says nothing. She then wipes her hand across her face to "assess" the damage and lets out a whimper *eye roll*. THEN she ask a fellow nurse how bad it is, and the nurse says (get this) it's not that bad!!! The f**k?????? This woman literally has blood flowing down her face!!!!! The characters were one dimensional and flat. I can't believe there are MULTIPLE books in this series.
good book, fast paced, plenty of action, short fun read.
So far I have to say I am ambivalent about the MC of the book. I know she is supposed to be a loving and compassionate soul because of her profession but I don’t know how that’s going to translate in this type of book. In my opinion the cat is superfluous. And even in this type of genre not realistic. Another problem I found in the book is that no woman is going to go on a trip without packing clothes. I don’t care how practical that woman is or what her profession is she is going to at least take a few outfits. I realize that when I read that part of the book that that was unrealistic after saying all this, I am going to read the next book to see if the character grows as well as how the story continues. Maybe the rating I gave the next book will go up.
Not bad, so far, your every day zombie apocalypse story. It will be interesting to see if the author goes anywhere with the one person, the doctor who thought to have his blood drawn before dying because he didn’t think he was turning that Alissa drew blood for him in the lab. Too bad those samples were lost. I wonder if she will try to contact anyone if she gets settled with that little bit of information she has. As far as she knows, she didn’t actually see him turn after he died. Did he not turn because his blood loss was so massive the ‘virus’ wasn’t making it to his brain, and why was he so sure he wasn’t going to turn? So, a few questions that would be nice to be answered. So many zombie stories never say why the virus happens.
I’m pulling for the cat to survive. 😝

If you ever wondered where the worse place to be when the zombie apocalypse hits, this will answer your question, a hospital. Nurse Alissa sees firsthand just how rapidly it spreads when people don't realize exactly what is going on. The dead soon outnumber the living and it spreads floor to floor. Alissa has to make many excruciating decisions as she tries to escape this horrific event. As she tries to get home, she realizes it has spread further than she had hoped. She runs into an old friend who helps her and they team up with a family of 4 that also need help, teaming up together, they now began a new fight for survival together. I'm looking forward to the next book to see how it plays out and what other horrors they will have to face.
The story is well written overall, with plenty of action and interesting characters. The poor editing takes away from the story so much that I had to deduct a star.
Missing words, misused words, misspelled words... the large number of mistakes just distract too often. It makes your eyes stumble and you have to figure out what the author meant. Simple editing would take care of that.
Nurse Alissa also picks up a gun early on and starts blowing away "deaders" left and right. She knows how to reload. She knows how to shoot. Later it's mentioned that she had never touched a gun before. Just taking out that line would help us believe in the story. A good editor would have caught it.
Good story. Good writing, good characters, good plot. Just a few changes could make it great.
Mr. Baker’s in-depth look at a hospital nurse’s descent into the chaos of the zombie apocalypse is just what I needed. The reader joins the main character (Nurse Alissa) as she is thrust into the middle of a high-level crisis at the hospital where she works as the zombie plague wreaks havoc, creating a ground zero scenario. Overcoming insurmountable odds, Alissa takes us on her journey out of the hospital and through the city as she attempts to make it to safety. The poor woman displays an iron will to live as she dodges life-threatening perils at every turn along the way. I can’t wait to read more about this woman’s quest for a safe place in the next book in the series.
Scott Baker will haunt your thoughts after reading Nurse Alissa vs the Zombies. There were scenes in this book so chaotic and still very detailed, they stayed with me long after I had put the book down. No one is safe from the zombie apocalypse. No one. Alissa Madison is an emergency room nurse whose quick thinking keeps her alive in the most dangerous of places during an outbreak, a hospital. Her inner drive to save those around her is thwarted time and again, yet she keeps pushing on to reach what she perceives as safety. Don’t worry, I won’t spoil it for you. This book pairs well with a glass of Stolichnaya, straight up, and an evening of restless sleep.
This one starts off like any night in the ER and then smacks you in the face. It jumps in and you find yourself running right along with Alissa as she tries to survive and make it home. Along the way we get to see how she helps or tries and her struggle in dealing with all that happens. I questioned how she had some survival training and need to know more. This was a slap you and have you finish this quick read, I finished in 1 sitting. There was a few errors that I found but it didn't stop me from liking it. I will complain that it ends and found myself grabbing book 2 and jumping in.
I love zombie books and was really interested in reading a nurse’s perspective for Day 1 of a zombie outbreak and getting out of a city. The book was just badly written… descriptions were subpar or completely missing, the main character is uninteresting, and apparently everyone that works in a hospital is an idiot, like no one has ever done a lock down drill. The garbage truck barreling through traffic was the most entertaining thing about this book and it was all of a page. I don’t normally leave bad reviews for books but this book was just painful.
Nurse Alissa is the kind of nurse that we need, right here, right now. This is a great read, action packed and heart wrenching in places. Nurse Alissa is so real, she practically reaches out from the pages and checks your pulse. (Which will be racing in some parts of this story!) Another great character and fast-paced zompoc romp from Scott Baker.
I loved it, really enjoyable trip into Nurse Alissa’s world. Just when you thought nurses couldn’t get any more awesome! I’m heading to handover so I can get the next part of the story.
a Nurse Fighting off zombies at imposable odds. She must make her way from the hospital to her home then onwards to her cabin in the woods where she hopes to find safety.
I enjoyed this book a great deal, Was a fun read with lots of action. It does close in a cliff hanger, and I dont much care for books that do that ... but in this case it was done well enough that I did not mind so very much.
If one could imagine being in a zombie apocalypse this book brought me close to it! I stayed on edge all the way through it as our mfc fought to escape the hospital. The hope she had as far as other characters came into play; her safety, their safety all a while dealing with zombies. The craziness of the whole scenario was nail biting... Looking forward to reading the next in the series.
I found this to be fast and easy to follow. It's all from the point of view of Alissa as the zombies make their first appearance in her world at work. Lots of fighting and action scenes without being drawn out. Book one is all about her trying to get home. This is only a part of the story so I felt like I was left hanging as it leaves opening for the next book. Yes she is safe, but only for the moment.
😂 well this was one of, if not the worst zombie books I’ve read. The lead went from worrying if she should ask a doctor out for dinner to double tap shooting her friend in the head within the first chapter. She killed with no hassle, overdosed a patient to put him out of his misery but left the other 20 to die in pain, called someone her friend after knowing them for about 2 minutes. This was SO rushed. And when a zombie book is unrealistic, you know it’s not good…

This was my first book from this author, but it will not be my last. Wow, what a great start to a new series! Nurse Alissa is awesome, she wants to help people but unfortunately the deaders had other plans. Get this book! Leave your reviews! And bring on the next book. Thank you for using Kindle Unlimited.
Mistakes: I found only one mistake in this story. It ends at 94% and has a preview of the next story. Everyone seemed to just know it was zombies, even at the beginning.
Plot: A nurse is working in the ER in downtown Boston when a zombie outbreak occurs. This is her story of survival.
Characters: Story isn’t long enough to get a real feel of the Mc.
While this book is pretty stock escape from Zombieland urban environment ,it is well written and well paced. It's a good read for fans of the genre. I have to say , these EOTW authors should learn the difference between a shotgun and a rifle. Minor gripe I know but it's not rocket science. That aside ,this is a very readable book.
Poor Alissa, what a day she has had. I must say though, she has some extraordinary good luck getting home. Unfortunately for those she tries to help along the way, that luck doesn’t carry over. Can she make it to her cabin with Nathan and his friends? Is the ex husband still out there? We shall read on and see what befalls Nurse Alissa next.
Literally one chapter and then your hit with all the action. A fast pace zombie apocalypse book, with non stop action with little to no down time- definitely no filler here. Also No major character development until the end of the book, but despite that I still thoroughly enjoyed the book and a very quick read. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series
The author clearly isn't too experienced, but the story is good so I'm sure he'll improve as it progresses. Nothing terrible, but a lack of emotion during descriptions make exciting scenes feel dull and lackluster. I'll still read the next in the series, though!
I enjoyed this book mostly because it's unlike most of the zombie books I have read in the past. The author does not hold back on the harsh reality of it's victims but also does not simply rely on gore to keep the reader's attention. I'm looking forward to the next book on the series.
