Berserk is a manga which stands out for its rich, twisted and dark universe. It is a clever alchemy between the stories of Elric of Melnibone, Hieronymus Bosch's paintings and Gustave Dore's engravings. This book reviews Berserk's story and all aspects of Kentaro Miura's life, the manga's author. It also deciphers the work's entire dark fantasy world.
So stark! #ThankYouMiura
This is definitely worth reading if you love Berserk and spend hours thinking about it like I do. I was afraid this would be too pretentious or skip over important tones and themes in favor of depicting Berserk as a male fantasy, but it was really great! It covers all the different parts of the manga epic; the story, the art, the inspiration, the author, the characters, the setting. Honestly, there is so much to go into that there could be separate books on each of those subjects, but this book did a great job at synthesizing it all into one volume. It's taken me a while to read this, and until last week I thought it was a little author worship heavy, but now I don't really care about that :(. I really appreciate the author's in-depth research into Miura's different inspirations and showing how they shaped Berserk. I wish there would have been a bit more analysis on the characters and their psychology, but that's a huge task and I understand that there has to be a limit.
A good work, though often repetitive and sometimes bordering on sycophancy. Having been a fan of Berserk for over a decade and having spent much of that time already reading essays and discussing the series, there was little in here that I didn't already know. Nevertheless for someone -not- chronically online, this would be a great accompanying read to Berserk.
This book could serve as a great tribute to Miura. It offers an in-depth analysis on characters’ motive, references of comtemporary works of art and some hidden details in the story.
