Robert Vaughn – Western Saga One – The Crocketts – Reviewed 5/14/20 – Read 5/7-9/20 Brothers forever, through war, death, and destruction. Vengeance is mine!
April 1862, St Ledger, Missouri… Will and Gid Crockett had not seen their folks for over a year, while the troops were bivouacked just outside of Springfield, the boys took a leave of absence to visit them. Both men had fought hard and Will had made the rank of Captain, thus choosing Gid as his Lieutenant. Having refused to join Quantrill when he broke off and started his own regiment, both were disheartened when General Pike had ordered a retreat when they had the Yankees outnumbered. Thinking that the leave would help them come to terms with what was going on, the boys set off to see their folks.
Deciding to stop and have a short one before heading out to the farm, the owner of their favorite pub updated the boys on some of their friends. Just before the boys reached home, the Crockett farm had a group of visitors, wearing blue, led by Captain Otto Hoffman. The only thing they had on their minds was to kill, ravage, and destroy! Upon reaching the farm they were devastated to find their pa dead, and their ma hanging on by a thread. At the funeral, the boys were approached by an old friend, the same one that had invited them to join Quantrill. He told them that he knew who had killed their parents. and burned their farm. Even though their ma had told them a name before she passed, this just confirmed it! He also told them that Quantrill had been chasing them, did they want revenge for their parents? Did they think for a minute that General Pike would go after them, even though Hoffman had done the same thing to numerous other farms in the area?? The boys now make their decision and the story begins….

What did I like? I have read several other books by Robert Vaughn; through those, I knew that this book would be another great read. Boy was I in for a surprise! I fell in love with the Crockett boys. I have always been a softy when it came to brothers being partners in the west. These boys are awesome together, quickness, brains, and brawn cannot be beaten. The way the two of them play off each other is so awesome. But, on the other side of the coin, it is also great that when they had faced so much sorrow, that they had each other.
What will you like? This volume is filled with five action-packed stories that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Many hours of shooting, riding, adventure, war, loving, drinking, excitement, sorrow, and being brothers. The stories are beautifully written and come together into an explosion of enjoyable reading. The descriptions are unbelievable bringing everything to life so that you are totally immersed in the mix of things, guns popping, jaws cracking, running horses, beer foaming, bad guys dying, with the brothers in the mix of all of it. Hear it, see it, and believe it, the Crockett boys are handsome, formidable, and impressive!
Mr. Vaughan has outdone himself with this outstanding series of old American western folklore adventures. The Crockett brothers are a wholesome couple that uses whatever force is necessary to bring peace and stability to their respective living areas at the time. Great series of unending excitement!
Certainly deserving of the five stars I awarded these compassionately motivated stories, as Will and Gid pull no punches in bringing justice to those responsible for their wrong doings throughout their many area of travel. These rogue brothers, regardless of their past, defy all odds in their respective pursuit of protecting the innocent from terror as they continuously fulfill their objective of bringing justice to those responsible for their ongoing wrongful treatment of the innocent! Never found a slow down of excitement throughout the entire series of outstanding adventures in this compelling western masterpiece! Definitely recommend this compassionately entertaining revelation of this truly realistically motivated western masterpiece, as it is one exciting episode after the other throughout the entire series of unending excitement! You non-western readers will certainly be appeased from beginning to end, as these two brothers fight for justice against all the odds against them! You followers of Mr. Vaughan don't need any encouragement,I am sure, but those who haven't been following this Author need to make sure to try this compassionately outstanding portrayal of western justice at its best!!!😄
A really good, easy read! Two brothers, Will and Gid, the Crockett brothers are raised in Missouri and end up fighting for the Confederacy; after the murder of their parents by the Union redlegs. From the Confederate army they ending up joining Quantrill's raiders -- and almost becoming the very thing that they despised most. This package contained several volumes, and they spent the first two searching for those that killed their family. The story evolves as they end up riding a fine line, between good and bad -- but the author wants you to know that they have a good heart. Really, it is a fun read. I didn't read it to learn anything, but just to get lost in the story, and I did that. If you're looking for a good, easy read; I would recommend this.
Well can't wait for the next book of the crockette brothers. Just finished where they were saloon owners. Those two were not really outlaws. They just didn't know how or when to slow down. They were looking for someone to settle down with, and convince them them they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. I want to be one of your readers when they find their other half.
Mr. Vaughan did a good job with this story telling.
The Crocketts are brothers but work well as one team. While Will is fast as a rattlesnake with his gun, Gid his brother is quite good with his fist. Now Gid isn't slow with his gun either, but he is better with his fist and he has his size to help him also. I wouldn't want to have to feed him though the boy likes to eat. Get ready for a story, a good one.
OUTSTANDING book, something for everyone who loves to read about good over evil.
The Crocketts saga is one you don't want to miss. The adventure of two brother traveling through the western frontier after the war keeps the reader turning pages. The best part is you get more then one story you get around seven hours of reading.
Love western s , enjoyed this book.Easy reading plot was good and held my interest. Really liked detail in which the era story was told one of my favorite things tto do is try to catch the author putting in inaccurate history pieces such as wrong guns or indian tribesfor that area
The adventures of the Crockett brothers seems as real as we believe the Wild West to be. Some of the language could have been better but we don’t expect everyone to speak without occasional vulgar words. However, the actions of the brothers are what would be expected with someone who rode with Quantrill.
A series of stories about brothers Gideon and Will who served with Quantrell in the Civil War. They manage to get into all sorts of disputes but the stigma of being associated with Quantrell follows then where ever they go. These are not bad stories as there is plenty of action action involved.
Mr. Vaughan has written a book containing 3 separate stories. The main characters are named Crocketts and they had many dangerous adventures. One story had a plot very similar to "The Gunfight at the OK Corral" , The other stories were very original and I enjoyed reading them!
The Crockett brothers felt real and their characterization was constant throughout the stories. Each Saga was great Western in every aspect and depiction. I never lost interest during any saga.
I enjoyed the book very much. The characters were well described and developed. I would have kept reading but I ran out of book. Thanks for writing it.
Thois saga is a study in history and the old west. It tells of the hardship, the violent loss of family and the mistakes you make when angry. Sometime even bad men can be good men at the right times.
The book tells an intriguing story and I enjoy the time spent reading them. I have one complaint, far too often characters are introduced, made a seemingly critical part of the plot and then just disappear, frustrating. But a good read nonetheless.
Wil and Gid Crockett are the devils and the heroes in these stories. They manage to find trouble even when they aren't looking for it. Some.of the best "shoot -em-up" westerns I've read!! Great stories with tons of action!!
Did enjoy it 3 very different but somewhat predictable in parts and repetitive history starts, hence 4* rating overall. First time reading your books, think I'll read more, like your writing style.
Robert Vaughan has created memorable characters in the Crockett brothers, Will and Gideon . This is a different genre to what I usually read but I loved every part turning the pages and enjoying every one , a great read!
I like western with good guys. The Crocketts have plenty of shootn, cussn, rustlen, and robbn. The brothers do some heroic things but not sure they were the good guys.
Except for the lamentable habit of using the same plot device in different series (with barely any change in wording) Mr. Vaughan writes very readable stories.
