Sheena has been an international agent for the past twelve years--twelve long years of constant movement, being sent all over the world to hopefully do good things in other countries. She has enjoyed most of the aspects of her exciting life, including the many men she has been able to amuse herself with during her rare time-off days in-between assignments. She has never been tempted to break the cardinal rule, which is that agents are not allowed to have emotions, which are too dangerous in their line of work. She has spent years suppressing them quite successfully. When a famous actor walks into the safe-house bar in Berlin where she is beginning a few days of down-time, she decides that seducing him is just the thing she needs to help her ignore the strange feeling of discontent that she has been plagued with lately. Tall and bronzed, the Native American actor has long black hair and a commanding air that interests everyone else in the bar as well. But to her delight, his eyes are only on Sheena. They spend days in her borrowed apartment, discovering the joys to be had in sharing their bodies with each other. Slowly, Sheena is forced to realize that she is developing feelings. Finding out that Cory is already in love with her adds another layer of danger. She will have to leave him when she is given her next assignment. That has never been a problem for her before. Will she be able to forget him once she leaves him? Will he ever forgive her? Since she is not ever supposed to see the same man twice, will it matter?
I have always had stories in my head. Characters intrude into my thoughts and insist on showing me scenes from their lives. I discovered that when I ignore them, they start to yell louder; if I write their stories and they can live in readers' heads as well, they usually leave me alone. Only to be replaced by a new group of story-tellers. My head is usually a very crowded place, but I like it that way.
When a publisher closed, I got the rights back to some of my books. #TBRPile finally made it to this one. As one of my lofty goals this 2021, I decided to tackle my TBRPile. Suffice to say, I did less tackling and the shelf nearly collapsed on me. This is one I added to my list almost a decade ago! I have the not-revised version.
This was just okay for me. Maybe a 2.5 star. Not quite a 3 star. The book shows promise but didn't do much for me. Sheena is supposedly a spy. She is more of a "cleaner" possibly assassin. A midwestern girl wanting an exciting life, she picks the ultimate adrenaline pumping job.
This book is like a USA cable fluff piece. I read quite a bit of this type of story. This one is a bit rushed in places and the characters are not built out as much that I could care about them. It tries to be like a James Bond but comes across more like Covert Affairs. Which isn't necessarily bad. There wasn't as much spy craft going on, more focus is on the romance and the "connected" true soul mate plot device. Perhaps that is why it didn't too much for me. Overall, this is a sweet romance recommended to those who enjoy happily ever afters.
I'm tired of reading about male spies. The heroine in this book is an international agent who doesn't need a man to protect her. But when she falls in love with one of her conquests, the trouble starts. She's not supposed to see any man more than once, since relationships are discouraged in her job. But when she runs into the man while on a dangerous assignment, he is persistent...which endangers them both. Now what?
Sheena works all the hours God sends. So, with a few days off and no work assignment on the cards, she decides to indulge in some free time—finding a man and spending her days off with him. She visits a pub and finds a man—an American film star, Cory—who ends up getting to know her in more ways than one over the next few days. Both fall in love with the other; Cory after a two-year abstinence and Sheena…she wasn’t expecting to fall in love with anyone, but she did.
But those heady days come to an end when Sheena is summoned back to work. She has to break away from Cory no matter how much it hurts. She wants to leave her job, spend her life with him, but she can’t. So she takes one more time with him, then leaves him a note thanking him for their special moments.
A year later on an assignment, Sheena is shocked to see Cory when she’s undercover at a birthday party. She can’t tell him why she’s there, or why she’s with certain people, and he thinks she’s there in a romantic capacity with another man, or that she’s possibly a high-class hooker. I have never wanted to shout at a book character so much as I did with Cory. “No! That’s not true! It’s her JOB!”
Yes, I said that while reading.
She tells him what she does, who she is, and that it isn’t as simple as just jacking in the job and walking away. This is the government we’re talking about, and she’s done some dangerous things and knows too much… And then things go wrong. Sheena finds herself caught up in something she really needs to get out of. Her life is at risk. Nail-biting, crazy tension here, where I got the chills and wanted to scream at her to try and get away.
BEST BITS: “Then I’ll ride my hog right through the damn door and up and down every fucking floor in this place, yelling out your name.”
“Did you ever lie to me about the way that you feel about me?”
Now she heard a noise and smelled a match being lit. The smell of cigarette smoke wafted over to her, so her would-be tormentor was right at the foot of the bed…
VERDICT: Secret Love is a damn good read with lots of erotica and some tense moments throughout. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and got a peek into the real, private life of a famous person and how he really acts when the spotlight isn’t on him. Great stuff!
SECRET LOVER is the first book in the FEMALE SECRET AGENTS series and I'm looking forward to reading more. An in-depth plot along with a depth to the characters and lots of secrecy since international agents are involved from a top secret government agency. Deal making, injuries, deaths and lots of guns but also the calm of the ocean along with a secluded house on the beach and lots of watchdogs gave this story both action and serenity with some steaminess thrown in.
Sheena and Cory have a chance meeting at a bar in Berlin and their attraction is off the charts and immediate. They seem to fall hard for each other but when she runs out on him because she was called back to duty it's hard to know what he thinks. She's an agent who is letting her emotions get in the way even though she's got three years left on her contract and they might not let her out of it even when she asks when her time is up. He's a well known American movie star. A chance meeting a year later in LA shows their feelings for each other are still strong, but where will they go from here?
There were lots of descriptions that got my adrenaline running and then some down time with hot between the sheets and elsewhere moments whenever they're together. They also communicate well and I like that he doesn't smother her. There is some closure with a happily ever after and more good things to come their way. I look forward to reading the next book, UNDERCOVER LOVERS.
Ms. McGier is an author whose books I've enjoyed. I look forward to reading more of them.
