Unable to find one, she wrote, "What Does Super Jonny Do When Mom Gets Sick." "I decided to write the book my family needed," she says. "It's a "HOW TO" do hospitals guide for patients and their families. I really enjoyed the challenge of writing a book which was not only medically accurate, but also a good story!

This is a book about a little boy whose mother goes into hospital with an illness (the illness is unspecified in the book). The little boy, who sees himself as a superhero, asks How can I help?
A number of hospital workers, ranging from the doctor down to the cleaner, all say they can help, but Jonny wants to give each of them something of his own as well. Unfortunately, Jonny feels his offers are unrecognised. I offered to help, but no one would listen. Discouraged, he comes up with several imaginative but unrealistic options to save his mother. She tells him, however, that he's already helped; each of the things he gave away was useful to the various hospital workers, though not necessarily in the ways he'd envisaged. Ultimately, she tells him, his superhero hugs are the best thing of all.
The book's delightful illustrations by Jasmine Ting give the easy-to-read story plenty of zip and zing, characterise the different people nicely, and add their own quirky humour and detail.
Finally there's a page of suggestions as to how to use the book in different situations: schools, hospitals, doctor's waiting rooms and so on.
This is a book that children will enjoy even apart from the crisis of a mother being hospital, and parents and medical professionals will find valuable.

When Jonny's mom ends up in the hospital, he as a super hero has a most important mission. That mission is to help his mother. This book struck a chord with me for many reasons. Many, many years ago before I had my own kids I taught 4 and 5 year olds in Sunday School. One of my young boys had a mother fighting cancer. It had started out as breast cancer and spread throughout her body. I can remember when she was having really bad days he would play superhero and tell everyone what he would do to kill the cancer bugs. He would be quite detailed. His mom would pull him onto her lap and tell him that his hugs and love helped her more than the medicine. They never sugar coated things. They told him what he could handle. He knew his mommy was going to die. Children are not dumb. This book sets out to show how one child feels helpless when his mom is in the hospital. It also shows his resilience and the ways he tries to help. Most importantly it shows that the best medicine in the world is the love of a child. I have seen this so many times. That extremely ill parent perks up when they feel the touch of a child's hand or the arms wrapped around them in love.
This book helps in many other ways as well. It educates children on what goes on in hospitals. For many this is a mysterious, and scary place. Unless they are a certain age, or it is a parent in the hospital, they seldom see anything except maybe the waiting room. With all of the unknowns it becomes a scary place. The author did a wonderful job of letting Super Jonny see what everyone does from the doctors and nurses to the cleaning people. She has shown that all jobs in a hospital are important.
This author took things one step further. She has asked questions that match our common core curriculum. In this day and age it is important that we read to our children for pleasure. However, it is also important that we stretch them and ask them questions that require them to think. The questions in the back of the book cover everything from critical thinking vocabulary and problem solving to processing information in oral, written and visual form. As a teacher this pleased me immensely. Do I think all picture books need this? Maybe not. However, for those parents who love to read for their child and want them to become critical readers then this is a great starting place. I often asked questions of my own children and grandchildren like this. I didn't want them to just identify pictures and colors. I wanted them to think deeper.
Simone Colville also has some great tips for preparing for a hospital admission. These tips are great not only for hospital visits but for visits to parents who must go into rehab for a while, whether it is in a licensed facility or with a care giver.
For me the greatest message in this book was one of service and perseverance. I work in a school that teaches community service. We identify community as everything around them. Community can be those in their school, their home or their neighborhood. Often they have trouble grasping this thinking of community service as cleaning up roadsides or waterways. What a wonderful way of helping students of all ages understand that community service really can begin with their own family. I will share this book with not only my fellow teachers, but my friends as well. This book is definitely well worth the read and the purchase.

Protagonist Jonathan and his stuffed bear are superheroes who dress in costumes and have all kinds of cool gadgets to use in conjunction with their powers. Their mission is to save the world.
When Jonny's mom gets sick and goes to the hospital, Jonny insists on helping everyone there in diagnosing his mom. The author mentions most of the hospital staff, doctors, nurses, lab technicians, x- ray technicians, dieticians, and even the janitor. No one seems to listen, but his mom explains exactly how her son has been helping. This book is really useful for introducing a child to the setting of a hospital and what happens when you visit someone who is ill. At the end of the book there is a guide for teachers which aligns with the US common core curriculum. Recommended for elementary school age students.

This was a cute, fast read for a small child. My 7 year old was so excited when it came into the mail but he read it in less than 2 minutes so I would say maybe it's better suited for 5 and younger. The book focuses on Super Jonny and his actions when he finds out his mom is sick. It leaves you with a good feeling by showing kids that even though you may not get the results you're expecting, something better may happen in the long run. The only reason I didn't give this a 5 star is because I thought it would focus a little more on Jonny an his relationship with his mom and instead, it's a little more about Jonny wanting to help out in a medical setting. I definitely think this is an appropriate read for kids!

This is an excellent book for the times when Mum is sick and the children do not know what to do and are feeling helpless. It is very informative and authentic as the author has actually been in these situations and also worked in the hospital environment. A truly delightful book with great illustrations which children will enjoy. I believe this story will help many sad and unhappy children world wide to be able to copy with traumatic situations in their lives by tapping into the super hero inside themselves..

What you very young people can do to help a lved one get well again and soon!
I thought this was quite an interesting and useful ebook for the very young superheroes in your family to help them also feel useful and needed to help their family member whether it be their mom,dad,sibling,etc. Such great art work! For these reasons I feel this is a five star ebook for very young children so I recommend this for the very young children. This is a great book for small children if they have a parent going to the hospital. Together with the colorful illustrations, the text helps the child to understand what all the people in the hospital do. At the end of the book are questions to help lead conversations about the hospital and illness. There are also suggestions for the parent to pack for the child when the child visits the hospital.

I won this book from the reading room and found it the perfect vehicle to help young children understand that moms sometimes do need drs and hospitals without it being scary.I recommend this to any parent to help explain the things that happen in a hospital and how much they help Mom or Dad get healthy quicker.

The author, Simone Colwill, was inspired to write this picture book for kids when dealing with her own chronic illness and as a former radiation technician. Hospitals can be scary enough places for grown adults but kids are often left on the outer when it comes to information when a parent or adult is sick.
Super Jonny and his sidekick Bear learn about the different people helping his mum when she's in hospital and what he too can do to help. This book is the perfect conversation starter with kids, helped by the warm and clear illustrations. Would be awesome to see it in hardcover though I understand the practical reasons it is in soft cover. Comes with online curriculum resources too, so can also be used by educators. Definitely recommended.

This is an okay story, and my 4-year-old likes it. I get what the author is trying to do with teaching kids how to help when someone is sick, and explainaing what the different people in the hospital do. I have to say that I get bored when having to read this every night though.
