The glory of classic Cartier jewelry is exhibited through fifty years worth of designs shown in this exhibition catalog. It shows how surprising the First Cartiers were, in two clear ways: first, art nouveau elements are almost totally absent. Instead there is a singular reinterpretation of the neoclassical vocabulary: floral motifs, acanthus scrolls, and garlands or drops. Care for detail in these architectural motifs–often in three dimensions–is paramount. At the same time, Cartier introduced the use of platinum for the mounts. This metal was more solid and more luminous but also harder to work. It required a revolution in setting techniques as well as new tools and underlying techniques. NUNO MANUEL VEIGA VASSALO E SILVA é licenciado em História da Arte pela Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa e doutorado em História de Arte pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. É membro integrado do Instituto de Arqueologia e Paleociências da Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e desde 1999 que exerce as funções de Director-Adjunto do Museu Calouste Gulbenkian. Foi Director-Geral do Património Cultural (2014-15) e Secretário de Estado da Cultura no XX Governo Constitucional (2015), além de conservador do Museu e Igreja de São Roque, da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa (1992-1999) e técnico superior do Instituto Português do Património Cultural, desempenhando funções na Galeria de Pintura do Rei D. Luís, Palácio Nacional da Ajuda (1988-1992). Comissariou diversas exposições.
As suas áreas de especialização são a Histórias das Artes Decorativas em Portugal (Joalharia e Ourivesaria), a produção de objectos preciosos na Índia Portuguesa e a história do coleccionismo.
