Let me first start off saying this has become one of my top ten most favorite books I have ever read! The story itself has five main characters that escape from their retirement home and have an Alice in Wonderland type journey. These five characters that this author has created were so relatable, I could actually find some of my personality traits in each one of them. Her character's were so real and raw and had such amazing views on their life experiences. I was left feeling like I was actuall ...more

“The Essence of Senescence” is a refreshing and entertaining read. Often stories involving major life changes and exploring ourselves are reserved for the younger main characters, however this book is told from the elderly perspective, following five retirees, offering a unique look into life and what’s to be done with the time we have left. Everything about this book was engaging from its characters to its writing style, which at times could be so descriptive, it was as if I could see the scene ...more

Normally, it takes me months to finish a book but with this one, I was hooked right away and couldn't put my phone down.

'The Essence of Senescence' is beautifully written in a very detailed and descriptive language that will make any person who reads it truly think. Even though I found myself zoning out a little, (because I have very short attention span) the author pulled me right back in. With it's interesting twists and hidden gems, this is a one of a kind story that I highly recommend you r

Wow, this story was so enchanting. I loved every moment of this.

In short, this is a story about five elderly people navigating their way through the past, present and future. It’s such a journey about what really matters in life and what we can do with the time we still have left.

The character work was fantastic, each character felt so real to me. They were all so wonderfully different to one another but ultimately they are all human just want to live life to its fullest. I rarely read books a

The 'Essence of Senescence' deals with its title perfectly, as it follows the story of five elderly people on deaths door, but its relevance to people of all ages is where its beauty lies. Although there are some issues that the book deals with that are specifically for the older generations, it brings accessibility for all to the lives of its protagonists as it deals with spirituality, sexuality, career and many other themes. These issues are not exclusive to elderly people and therefore there ...more

Let me just start off by saying that this novel was a masterpiece! It was so beautiful and a book that will forever stay with you. It’s unforgettable.

This story is based on some elderly people, and their journeys through life. It was captivating. You could see everything from this magical perspective and I learnt SO much from this novel. I would totally recommend it to people of many age-groups and I know that no one could not love it.

Milo Twyla’s words were like magic. They flowed brilliantly

I don't really read books so often but this one was just beautifully written. I would describe it as a mixed in of adventure kinda like going down a spiral staircase with mini worlds on the shelves, each detailed to perfection. I would definitely ask others to read it and think of it as an adventure instead of just words for words because there is so much to it that the eyes or mind alone can track ^^ so pour your souls into it too fellow readers. In each chapter you can feel the intensity of th ...more

It starts with the parallel morning routine lives of five characters who joined a great adventure. The book keeps you curious on what is going to happen next.
The characters are chosen wisely and put in the circumstances where you can not only enjoy the fantastic journey , but also get a deep meaning of life inspired by Ancient Greek philosophers; “nothing is permanent except the change. Their personalities are reflected in their interactions who are interesting, sometimes with colours of sarcas

"The Essence of Senescence" is a work of art. It is abstract and vague, yet somehow still accurate. It's a completely different world – a world of possibilities, a world that is multidimensional, a world of thought. The book made me realize the multitude of opportunities surrounding me. It's made me believe, and it has made me think. It's got me sitting back and sifting through my existence, and attempting to understand it's unending facets.
It has allowed me to forgive my flaws, but not let the

The writing in this book is beautiful, the style is like no other on today's market. The descriptions are vibrant and engaging, and each character is designed and written with such care. I love Milo's beautiful use of language and the way she crafts her chapters from different perspectives. The only reason I give this book four instead of five stars is that although the pacing is great, at times it's hard to follow along with the events of the story. Still, a literary masterpiece for sure, and d ...more

The book had a very unique plot line which is unlike any that I’ve ever read before. This really engages the reader, encouraging them to read on and find out why this group of 5 elderly characters are escaping from the place they are stuck in at the beginning. The writing style was eloquent and very descriptive, creating vivid imagery of surroundings and feelings. There is also a beautiful underlying theme of family, life and philosophy which adds a nice touch to this work of fiction. An overall ...more

This novel is written in a very descriptive and, at times, dreamlike quality. Ms. Twyla brings a very valid and descriptive style of prose to her story of five elder souls navigating and finding their way through mystery and journeys of life. On occasion, and this may be a personal reading preference, i found the pacing to drift off at times, but there was always a hook that was able to bring me back into the storyline. All and all a recommended title from a talented author.

Imaginative! Intriguing! Delightful!
The Essence of Senescence is a thought provoking read. I enjoyed it from start to finish.
The character work is what I loved the most; together being diverse, all being relatable.
Each character gave me insight into how we navigate being human. There were moments I felt like I received a peek into my own future and other times I reflected carefully on my past. I feel like one could not read this story without reflecting on the deeper yearnings of the heart.

I always have an issue finishing books, but this one really drew my attention. The characters in this book are so interesting in their own unique way. Each had their own story that was being told, which was so well put together. Top class of a story that’s being told!!!!

Highly recommend this book to readers out there!!!!

Big thanks to Milo for giving me the opportunity to read and review her debut book. It was such a wonderful experience.

This is not the kind of book I usually read, but I really loved this!
Each character in the book was very well described and had their own distinct personalities and quirks - something I always admire because often authors write characters that can begin to blend and look and sound the same. I found the descriptive language the author used to describe scenery, people and situations very beautiful, which added so much to the plot of the book. The plot itself took us on a journey I really wasn’t e

It's spectacular. The entire book is built in a simple foundation yet compound structure, elaborating its plot to the readers. Giving it a better grasp at allowing it to be understood, all while maintaining the readers full-attention. It has also helped in many moments on my end, whether it be to kill time, or to simply be pulled into this somewhat relatable story.

Readers who are interested in strongly visualized description, would no doubt the book would piqued their liking. Anyhow, without mu

One of my must reads during the pandemic!
I admit, I went to research to understand “Senescence” and as I went on, I felt like I was reading a book that was relating to what I was feeling in the moment. Because of the pandemic, I have taken time to deeply think of my own existence and my own presence in the world. What I love about any book is how the title ties back into what you may find within it. The title, “The Essence of Senescence”, took me a bit to understand until you step back and under

'The Essence of Senescence' is a tale of adventure, heartbreak, love, comedy, existentialism, spirituality and so much more. We begin with a myriad of colourful, wonderful seniors at the start of a typical morning, before their pathways each intertwine erupting in an explosion of thrill-seeking and friendship. Milo's writing is exquisite; her visual descriptions beautifully executed weaving a tapestry of their rich history and experiences, gorgeously specific and detailed. Her ability to illustr ...more

This book is amazing! It isn't the type of book I would read usually, but I absolutely love the storyline. It's really refreshing to read a book which not based on young adults. The storyline itself is so much fun, I love the plot because it is completely unlike anything I have ever read. From the very first page, the author blew me away with her descriptions. The book is full of twists, and I can honestly say that I never saw any of them coming! Who knew the lives of 70+-year-olds could be so r ...more

“The Universe simply writes itself. Things just happen, without plan.”

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Is it possible to have a coming of age story for a group of retirees? I’m not sure, but to me that’s what The Essence of Senescence by Milo Twyla is best described as, although there is much more to it than that.

This book focuses on a group of retirees on the run with a dog who may or may not be more than it seems. Throughout the story we get to learn the fear

First, the writing is excellent. The subject matter of the book is similar to what I normally read, so it wasn't difficult to get through. As a screenwriter, I was instantly watching this story as a film in my mind as I was reading. Because the characters are older and it has fantasy elements, this could be a really nice film visually if the right people got to work on it. As for the characters, my favorite had to be Cosette of course. I identified with him mostly. I liked Zephy as we

'The Essence of Senescence' by Milo Twyla is truly a masterpiece. Everything from the ingenious dialogue to the variety of characters is wonderfully relatable and smooth all while maintaining a beautiful and lyrical writing style. At the same time, the characters are escaping from an old age home, not something most of us can relate to. This adds the spice of refreshingness. I loved the adventure, characters, and way this book, unlike most of the others I've read, managed to surprise me with its ...more

"The Essence of Senescence" by Milo Twyla is exceptionally written - her characters are multidimensional, her storyline is compelling and within it she utilizes the element of surprise and she addresses important topics.
Although each character is confined to each another through age and circumstance, they all possess characteristics and energies that are unique. Twyla skillfully balances their similarities and differences. Additionally, the element of surprise throughout the novel, without a dou

Milo Twyla’s Novel, The Essence of Senescence, is packed with stunning detail of a group of five elderly characters battling death, yet not in the way one would expect. With an array of extraordinary personalities facing each chapter, one could be swiftly swept away down the streets of England; or lose themselves in the contemplations and reasonings of Zephy’s mind. It’s a thrilling and captivating tale of enchanting people making the best of life with the time they have left.
