Brimstone Inc. #4

Try As I Smite

Rate this book
Bah humbug just got a lot darker.

Alasdair Blakesley is the head of the Covens Syndicate. He shouldn’t need to look beyond the witches and warlocks he governs, or his own abilities, to solve any problem. But a demon infestation means he can’t trust anyone who may be possessed. The last person he wants to ask for help is also the only person who can fix this, so he sucks up his pride and storms into her office.

And she turns him down cold.

As the owner of Brimstone Inc., Delilah’s passion is helping others with their supernatural problems. But Alasdair is the last man Delilah wants to tangle with. The infuriating man sees too much and demands even more. And did she mention the way he sets her body on fire?

Not that it matters — demons are the only things with which she cannot interfere. Too bad a higher power steps in and sends them both on a crash course of each others’ pasts, presents, and futures.

How is a Christmas Carol nightmare supposed to solve his demon problem without breaking the rules she’s bound by?

I've been waiting to get Delilah's story since the beginning of the Brimstone Inc series! The time has finally come and it did not disappoint. Loved the Christmas Carol twist, it was a fun way to get to know Delilah and Alasdair better while watching their connection strengthen. Also, kudos to Owen for managing to still bring the heat to a plot that forever makes you think of old dudes in nightgowns lol.

Like all the Brimstone Inc. books this was a quick spicy little tale and each new character introduction seems more interesting than the last. Which is incredible considering that bar is already set pretty darn high. I'm forever looking forward to the next addition!

I received an arc of this book from Entangled: Amara via Netgalley and this is my honest review.

Witches, warlocks and demons oh my...too much *shrugs*, maybe, but that is what we have in this book, and I loved it. Alasdair is the powerful warlock, that is the head of the Covens Syndicate, and he happens to be dealing with demons possessing people, so he goes to the one woman that drives him nuts for help, Delilah, a sassy seer. These two, lmao, I loved their back and forth, and all the sexual tension between them, you could just feel it through the pages. She can’t help him, but she does send him to someone that can, and that’s where the twist and “fun” really starts. These two get bound and sent on a Dickens, A Christmas Carol, like adventure. See, the real fun starts. They get to embark on a journey and share the most important moments in each other’s lives. Such a great twist, oh, and there are plenty more twist in the story, that had me going wtf, and I did not see that coming.

This was a safe read, with a sexy warlock and his equally sexy seer. Great storyline, with so many great twist. A epilogue and a hea.

The man is a demanding one, “still want you.” He stepped in to her again, cupping the back of her neck, willing her to shop shutting him out. “I’ll still want you, dammit.” I liked this book, I loved Alasdair

This was my first experience with Abigail Owen's Brimstone, Inc. series, and I gotta say, WOW!!! I couldn't be happier with a new series (new to me, that is). It has everything I love in a good PNR series.

While it may not directly have her dragon shifters, they definitely get a mention, which was cool. But this series didn't need her dragons. She gave us characters like Alasdair and Delilah. Two people who seemed to be polar opposites, when in reality are exactly alike. Well, in every way but one. And that one way had me humming Devil or Angel by Bobby Vee throughout the whole book. :-) I had a great time reading it, and honestly couldn't put it down. I don't want to give much of the storyline because anything I say will be a spoiler, so let's just say the newest problem Delilah is confronted with comes by way of Alasdair making a request of her that she, by necessity and old bonds, must turn down. The trouble begins and ends right there. Well, maybe it doesn't end there...

Quite frankly, I didn't expect much. I expected it to be like every other PNR out there. It wasn't. At all. It was such an interesting contrast in personalities, such intense drama, and such incredible love scenes, it just really grabbed me. I'm going to go buy all the others now. I just wish I'd known her other series were equally as good (well, almost equally anyway!) as her dragon series! I'd have read them sooner!

Excellent work, Abigail. Excellent indeed! I love it, so keep it up!

I received this book from NetGalley and the author, as an ARC, however, all opinions and statements are in my own words and of my own volition.

Ready for a slightly twisted, slightly darker and definitely sexier version of A Christmas Carol? Get ready to enter Abigail Owen’s world of witches, warlocks and demons in TRY AS I SMITE, a thoroughly entertaining, spicy and fun paranormal romance!

Alasdair Blakesley has an infestation problem, nothing so mundane as bugs, but something far more sinister, demons. As the head of the powerful witches syndicate, it wasn’t easy to have to turn to Delilah, and her company, Brimstone, Inc. for help. It may also be difficult to know they have a special chemistry that burns, in spite of his demanding ways. Will Delilah be able to help him or has she come up against the one problem she cannot solve?

Definitely a fun read with some classic witty banter, sizzling tension and a seemingly impossible task!

I received a complimentary ARC edition from Abigail Owen & Entangled, Amara! This is my honest and voluntary review.

Will her true self bond or set them apart ...

My first read by the author was the previous book in this series. This one plays with Dickens’ Christmas Carol, a retelling I just loved.
With the end of the year approaching, this story is even more relevant.
Delilah knows the price of her birth, she repays but helping others, she is the one people calls in the last ressort.
Alasdair has risen from the ashes of his childhood, and never would he let demons take over mages again.
Together they are like oil and water, yet something they refused to acknowledge bond them to one another.

This story is an entertaining rewriting of the most famous Christmas tale with sexy time, magic and hell and heaven conspiring to break havoc on earth.

The Brimstone Inc. series gets a Dickensian twist in Try As I Smite . I love the way author Abigail Owen brings together all kinds of supernatural beings, making each and every story in this series unique. And for Delilah’s story, Ms. Owen goes big.

Sparks flew the minute Delilah, the mysterious owner of Brimstone Inc., met warlock Alasdair Blakesley, the head of the Covens Syndicate. The two powerful beings clash from the start, but when widespread demonic possessions start occurring to witches and warlocks, Alasdair sucks it up and goes to Delilah for help… Only to be turned down. When it comes to demons, Delilah can’t get involved. Then someone even more powerful than the two of them sends Delilah and Alasdair on a joint Christmas Carol-type adventure. And the more the Alasdair and Delilah learn about each other, the harder it is for them to deny their mutual attraction. I loved the clashing and the simmering sexual tension in this story. Alasdair and Delilah are two strong, confident people and neither can cow the other. I also thoroughly enjoyed peeling back the layers of their characters and learning their pasts. Alasdair carries deep scars from childhood and they broke my heart. And Delilah… let’s just say learning about her mysterious abilities was worth the wait. Delilah’s past, present, and future are complicated and to say much more about this story would spoil it.

There is a lot going on in Try As I Smite , which is great, but also the story’s biggest weakness. Everything felt rushed, from the romance to Delilah’s history to other elements it would be major spoilers to discuss. If this had been a full-length novel, it would no doubt have been fantastic. But zipping through everything didn’t do the characters or the story any favors. Don’t get me wrong – I still liked Try As I Smite quite a bit. But when you go big in a story, it’s more engrossing if you also go deep, and that’s what this story was missing. But even falling short of its potential, Alasdair and Delilah’s story was interesting and entertaining. And as I am a really big fan of the Brimstone Inc. series, I’m looking forward to seeing who Delilah helps next.

Original review
This book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Entangled Amara!

Try As I Smite is the fourth book in the Brimstone Inc. series and tells the story of Delilah and Alasdair. Although this is the fourth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone.

Try As I Smite is the book I’ve been waiting for. Ever since I read about Delilah and her services, I’ve been wanting to read her story. And I’m not disappointed at all! I really liked Delilah and Alasdair’s story. The story was really good, and I loved discovering more about Delilah.

Delilah’s always been an interesting character to me. I’ve always wanted to know more about her and I loved reading about her parents and her abilities. As for Alasdair, I really liked him. At first he seemed like an asshole, but the more I read about him, the more I started to like him! I think Delilah and Alasdair are a great pair.

Try As I Smite was such an amazing and fast paced read! I loved reading about Delilah and Alasdair, and I wish I could read more about them (and all the other characters in the Brimstone Inc. series)! The entire Brimstone Inc. series is such a good series, and all the books are quick reads. I highly recommend this series if you’re looking for amazing and quick Fantasy books!

What would happen if A Christmas Carol met a paranormal romance? Try As I Smite, I couldn’t put the two together in my head. Luckily, Owen did that very thing for us.
I definitely enjoyed this one. The Dickens touches. The hardheaded supernaturals. It all blended seamlessly into this beauty.

Three and a half
This is such a fun paranormal series and now as the time of year turns towards winter we get a short story that is about paranormal creatures but set at Christmas. Yes if you want a mash up of Halloween vibes alongside a whole lot of Christmas then this homage to Dickens will certainly entertain on the darker nights !
Alasdair knows there's something about Delilah that's off but can't quite put his finger on what it is. She's gorgeous, intriguing and most of all frustrating. When he realises the Demons are possessing his fellow magical creatures he turns to Delilah who previously has loved to meddle ( she would say help !) but no the annoying woman actually refuses and then sends him to someone who is perhaps just a little too caught up in Christmas stories !
This was fun to read and certainly had the characters jumping through hoops. Their romance wasn't an immediate one which I preferred but certainly they had chemistry. I just wasn't totally convinced by the ending unfortunately but nevertheless it was sweet that they both finally found love and peace in each other's arms.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Alasdair has a demon problem. As head of the Covens Syndicate he must find a way to keep his people safe. He turns to the one person he didn't want to ask for help and she says no, referring him to someone else who can help. Delilah is a compassion person, always helping the supernatural in need. Until Alasdair comes knocking. The problem he has with demons is one in which she cannot intervene.

When Alasdair and Delilah are swept away into vision together, they soon discover it's a take on A Christmas Carol, and are subjected to their past, present, and future. As they try to figure out how this is going to help Alasdair's demon problem, especially when Delilah cannot be of any assistance, sparks fly. Their chemistry is hot and spicy. The banter between them is fun, sexy, and witty. The suspense due to the demon problem, Delilah's binding problem, and their growing attraction kept me on the edge of my seat as the story played out.

Try As I Smite is a quick, fun read, blending paranormal romance and dark versus light in a novella that packs a punch. Both Delilah and Alasdair are terrific characters and I really enjoyed the chemistry the author created between them. The world building was done well and I was able to visualize the story as I read along. The loose depiction of A Christmas Carol brought another level to the paranormal romance and I fell in love with the characters and the story.

I was provided a copy of this book to read.

Try As I Smite is a brilliant addition to this heart rending and extraordinary series. Nothing will capture your heart better then two enemies who challenge one another and disrupt their calm world. Join me in this eye-opening journey of two people who start apart and yet are so tightly and emotionally connected. What you think you see is only smoke and mirrors compared to the truth of their reality.

Alasdair and Delilah are on opposite spectrums. They are so extremely different on so many levels that they will surely never cross. When a devastating truth is revealed, they finally find a game changer that upends everything they held as an illusion. The truth is much more tantalizing then secrets which comes as a shock to them both.Further keeping them on their toes, they find a shocking connection that is enough to shatter and remake their world. If they have any hope of saving their world, they must accept the impossible, embrace the forbidden, and hold nothing back. Will this task prove to be more then either can handle, or will their hearts surprise them and prove just how easy that is?

What a beautiful revelation to get to know these two powerful and provocative characters! I was in heaven as I watched their secrets revealed one by one and watched their hearts set free to explore and claim what they have so greatly longed for. What a true masterpiece to behold!! It can't get much better then that.

Abigail Owens truly owns my heart and soul. This series has taken my captive, and I don't care to escape. The beauty, the intrigue, and the danger has left me in awe and estascy as I savor the stunning and passionate characters that speak to every part of my heart, mind, and soul. I beg you not miss out on this fabulous wonder and incredible delight that is this phenomenal series!!

This is a first for me with Abigail Owen and the Brimstone Inc., and I can say I really plan it not being the last.

The characters of Alasdair and Delilah were extremely entertaining and likeable.
The author played it bit with one of my favorite Christmas books: A Christmas Carol.
In order to say everyone Alasdair and Delilah are sent forth (by Delilah's mother) to learn a few lessons from the past and what can happen in the future if their lessons are not obtained.
The two characters are opposites in so many ways and is one of the reasons these two work so well together.
If her other stories are even half as interesting and fun as this one, I'm all in for future reads and possibly going back to the beginning of this series to find out what I missed.
Very well written and I believe this may be enjoyable to reads of all genres.

Delilah may be the paranormal world's ultimate fixer but she is hiding a BIG secret. But will the dashing but annoying Alasdair hemp or hinder her in trying to keep it under wraps.

Get ready for this twist on a Christmas Carol as Alasdair and Delilah's pasts come crashing into their present.

Alasdair may be chockful of power as the head of the Coven. He has a tight leash on his emotions and his power. The last time he lost control he almost cost himself his family and his sanity.

But Delilah...that woman tempts him like no other. All whilst driving him around the proverbial bend. Demons, desire, dreamscapes...all of these mix in a wonderful tale. Magic, mystery, and memorable moments abound.

I loved finding out more about the enigmatic Delilah and the oh-so-uptight Alasdair. Loving this series - these two especially are crazy hot together!

Try as I Smite is the fourth instalment in Abigail Owen’s Brimstone Inc. and what a fun, outrageous and thoroughly enjoyable read it was. This one has a bit of Halloween and Christmas rolled into one, and plenty of dark and sexy too! I loved the concept and it’s perfect as a quick, in-between stories read.

'Try as I smite" is the first book I have read in the brimstone, inc series and it did not disappoint. I finished this story in less than a day. In 'try as I smite' we meet alasdair and Delilah. Alasdair has discovered that demons were possessing members of his coven, so he goes to Delilah for help. Delilah mysteriously is unable to help, but she sends him to someone who can. Together Alasdair and Delilah go on 'A Christmas Carol' type journey to save humanity. Their journey was really fun to read, although I was still a little confused about something (which I can't say as it would be a spoiler). We met other characters as well that.were partner the previous books. Not having read their story didn't have am impact on this book, but I am curious to go back and read about them.

I received a copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
In this book, we have characters that have had previous encounters in the other books of the series. That was not a problem, but the reference to their previous encounters and common friends are lost to those who haven’t read the other books.
It was short and it was sweet. The author managed to create a real connection between Alasdair and Delilah in just one night. The characters were pretty much ready to be together and just needed a little push.
The fantasy was a bit dense for such a short book but it was enjoyable.
I recommend it to people that are looking for something short, sweet and its easy going.

Brimstone Inc is a fun series of short paranormal romances. Although I am sure that they would work fine as standalone romances, I think that they are probably really better if you read the series in order. That is particularly true with this one, as it features Delilah, the owner of Brimstone Inc. In the previous books, we have seen her helping out her various clients, but she has remained quite a mysterious character. Now we finally find out what she is, what her story is and why she is a perfect match for her hero Alisdair.
Although this is a quick read, there's still plenty of time for the story to unfold with lots of heat and chemistry between Delilah and Alasdair. They work well together, in more ways than one and this makes a great new instalment in the Brimstone Inc series.
This world is linked to the Dragon shifter series' also by Abigail Owen. Although there hasn't been a direct crossover as yet, they are all part of the same world. If you haven't read any of those yet, then this series might be a good place to start. I'm not sure if there's more to come in the Brimstone Inc series, but I'm looking forward to finding out if there is.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Delilah owns Brimstone, Inc where she helps people with their supernatural problems. The only thing she cannot interfere with is demons. Alasdair is the head of the Covens Syndicate and demons are taking over his coven. He goes to Delilah but she can’t help him so she sends him to someone else. But they bind him to Delilah and send them to see the past, present, and future. They must figure out how to stop the future they’ve been shown from happening.
Great little story. Two people who are very powerful and see that the future can change. Secrets and sex. Witches, demon, and warlocks.

And Abigail did it again - finally we got to read more about Delilah and Alasdair with a bit of a Chrimasy-feeling and sizzling romance while they have to learn to trust in each other... But sometimes you need ghosts of the past, present and future to manage this ;)
****
I was so looking forward to finally read more about Delilah, especially after her encounter in BaitnWitch with Alasdair. We already knew about the strong, badass woman, but once she came face to face witht the head of the Covens Syndicate, she felt something change within her, and I felt it as well as the reader.
As always I just love Abigail's writing style and the way she brings the story to her readers. The same goes with Alasdair - although he seems cold and passionless in the beginning, he is everything but when it comes to those he loves - and oh my can he love.
The dynamic between those two was great and I also loved the fact that Alasdair fought for it - he did not give up on either of them and I this was refreshing (better than this never-ending back and forth).

The read was short and so good, and I hope we do get to read more about this world. Can't wait to find out what a certain siren will do with her cupid...

******

Since the beginning of the series I have anxiously been waiting to find out who Delilah is and finally we get her story! While Alasdair is a powerful warlock and head of the Coven Syndicate ( which governs the witches and warlocks) he’s been bombarded with a demon problem and needs some help. Despite the scorchingly hot sexual tension between Delilah and Alasdair the tension of power between them is overwhelming. When he goes to Delilah for help Alasdair is unaware of the restrictions that prevents her from giving assistance. With his problems. While initially frustrated he soon learns that all is not what it seems. The two then experience a “Christmas Carol” like journey through their lives realizing that their connection has deep roots, helping them deal with the problem together. The sexual tension between them is immense but the story focuses more on the relationship and history of the two than actual bedroom time. The Dickens-like story line is definitely cute for a Christmas story ( yes witches celebrate other holidays) but I wish there was more about their current relationship than what went on in the past. This is part of a series and familiar characters appear however you don’t have to read the previous stories to be able to enjoy this one, although I highly recommend the other ones. 4 stars. I received an arc copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review

This book is part of a series by the Author and whilst it can be read as a standalone reading the previous book in order would be of benefit .

Alasdair Blakesley is a powerful warlock and head of the Coven Syndicate - which governs the witches and warlocks ........... he has an evergrowing problem with demon possessions , the last straw is the possession of his assistant .
Knowing he cannot kill the demon outright , as the human host would also die , he goes to the last person he wants to ask for help .
Delilah is the head of Brimstone Inc. a Seer who uses her abilities to help people - and the Supernatural community find love . When Alasdair confronts Delilah in her office he is stunned when she turns him down , she cannot/will not help - and instead refers him to someone she says can help ....... her mother !
Bound together , what follows is a mix of 'A Christmas Carol' and events in the past and present and what the future could hold if the Demon incursion and possession occurs .
Secrets held for so long cannot survive what is to come ........... it is only by working together and perhaps being willing to make the ultimate sacrifice that they might succede in the final battle .

This is a fast paced , paranormal thriller ( with a touch of romance ) full of twists and turns that I thoroughly enjoyed

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Yay, after three stories in the Brimstone Inc. series, I was very happy to see that Try As I Smite was about the mysterious Delilah herself. In my review of Bait 'N Witch I already mentioned that I hoped she would get her own story and Abigail must have seen it :-)
In this part we finally can read about Delilah and her past. And why she keeps to herself most of the time. And why she is driving Alasdair crazy. We already met Alasdair in the earlier parts of the series, because he is the head of the Syndicate. And he has a very big problem: there are demons inhabiting people and creating havock. So he turns to the one person he think can help him solve this problem: the mysterious Delilah. But she turns him down flat.
Until Delilah's mother steps in an sends them both on a Christmas Carol adventure, where Scrooge could learn something from. Why are the send on this adventure? And why are they denying their attraction? As always, Delilah is hilarious and she is driving Alasdair nuts with all her witty comments. I loved it. Find out for yourself in this great read of Abigail. Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

I have been hoping that we get a book with the mysterious Delilah! So, I was very excited that this book was about her and boy she is a mystery waiting to unfold.

Alasdair kind of seems like a stuck up elitist but he kind of grows on you as the book progresses and we see some of his past and you can't help but like him.

Lots of action, drama, and intrigue to go along with the sizzling attraction as they battle evil forces. Delilah has a big secret that she just knows is going to seal her fate with Alasdair but you just know it will all work out so they have a very nice HEA! Plus, it was fun to see Rowan and Greyson for a few minutes in the book!

This is the first book I read in this series, now I’m going back for the others.

I loved the characters, they way they played off one another and the story and romance built was great.

Even without having read the previous books you can tell this was not an insta love, and it’s more of a frienemies to lovers.

Since I was new to the series and author, I was expecting a tad more funny scenes, the play with words in the title led me to believe that. I loved the play with the “ghosts of christmas past” and the characters discovering hidden parts of each other.

I did have a tad bit of an issue with Delilah stubbornness at the end, but nothing that soured the book.

I've been trying out some paranormal romance books leading up to Halloween. It's not my usual genre, but I am so glad I am reading them!

Try As I Smite was an entertaining blend of Halloween/the paranormal and Christmas with inspiration from A Christmas Carol. I haven't read this series before, but Alasdair and Delilah were a great introduction to the series. It was an interesting world to jump into and I am looking forward to going back and reading from the beginning.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for an honest review.
