Another exciting mystery starring Harrison "Hal" Beck and his Uncle Nat, but this time we have gone stateside!! Hal and his uncle have travelled all the way to the United States of America to travel on the California Comet, but once again, Hal finds himself embroiled in a mystery, but this time involving a kidnapping.
I loved the first book, The Highland Falcon Thief, so much for the atmosphere and setting, and the sequel amplifies it with this new, fresh and exciting setting! The descriptions of the outside views, the mountains and even the train itself transforms this into a real reading experience and I couldn't help but picture myself on the train with them.
The writing was again engrossing and intriguing and I just had to know how the kidnapping unfolded and who was behind it. I wasn't supposed to read this right now but I picked it up just because I've been dying to read it since finishing the first book back in January, and before I knew it, I'd found myself at the end.
A highly satisfying sequel with characters I have really grown to care for. I love the 'Adventures on Trains' series for its constant refreshing of the setting and I can never predict what's going to happen next with Hal and his Uncle Nat. One of my favourite middle grade mysteries series now, and it has me itching to go on a train again!

Highly addictive, fantastically written and beautifully illustrated. This series is filled with hijinks, travel, mystery and wonderful characters. It’s a truly delightful read for readers young and old and I loved every page.

Wow such an amazing sequel! There is so much action & adventure packed into such a short trip! So good. We are back w/Hal & Uncle Nat. This time they are traveling across America on the California Comet. This time there is a kidnapping to solve. We have some brand new friends for this trip as well. Marianne, & siblings Hadley & Mason. I absolutely loved the siblings. The girl is a magician & the boy is a master w/voices & impersonations. They help Hal, & have the adventure of a lifetime together. Of course a whole new train of interesting characters too, all who become suspects. I’ve really grown so fond on Hal & his Uncle, & just love taking these journeys by train w/them, & love seeing Hal work a case w/his drawings. It’s such a creative, fascinating idea. As an American, I loved seeing through Hal’s eyes how everything was so different to him, compared to where he’s from. From America itself, the feeling he got just being here, the food, & they way things were named differently even. This was full of so much mystery, suspense, adventure, & heart. I can’t wait to travel w/these 2 again, & all the friends they make along the way. I need a ton more books w/them! Lol I highly recommend. Also, another gorgeous cover w/just the most beautiful illustrations throughout the book.💜

Another train mystery solved!!
The 2nd-book of my new favorite Middle Grade series didn't disappoint. It was everything I wanted and more!
After his memorable trip on The Highland Falcon with his Uncle Nat, Hal Beck, is ready embark on another adventure. His Uncle, a travel journalist, is set to travel on the famous California Comet from Chicago to California and it just so happens, the trip coincides with a school break for Hal.
More than happy to have his nephew along for another trip, the two pack their bags and set off for the U.S. together; it will be Hal's first time.
At first, Hal is anxious about being homesick and out of place in a foreign country, but soon enough he has made new friends and finds himself embroiled in another mystery.
In the first book, we had a thief aboard the train. Someone stealing objects of value from various passengers. In this installment, as the title would suggest, we have a kidnapping of a very wealthy young passenger, but how?
The kidnapped girl resided in her father's own private car and she had her own security guard. How did the kidnapper get past security?
Hal and his new friends, Mason and Hadley, are intrigued, but they also want to help. The girl could be in very serious danger. Together the trio work around the clock to try to solve the mystery.
This was such a fun read. As with the first book, I became completely invested in this story quite early on. In fact, the first night I picked it up, I had to force myself to put it down so I could get some sleep.
Who knew a Middle Grade Mystery Adventure series set on trains would be my new favorite thing in the world!?
The writing is great, the set-up and mystery are intriguing as heck and I love the characters. I also love the inclusion of Hal's drawings; seeing the world through his eyes and how they help him to puzzle out the mysteries. It's fantastic.
Also, I love Hal as a main character. He's always kind, brave, creative and has a genuine curiosity about everything that is so fun to read.
I definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Middle Grade Mystery stories. It's such a joy, pure entertainment.
I am super excited to continue on with the third book, which I will be starting very soon!

Samenvatting:
Alex vond het avontuur met zijn oom Ben op de Hooglandenexpres zo ontzettend tof, dat hij graag een tweede keer met oom Ben mee wil. Zo gezegd, zo gedaan. Alex mag een reis maken in de California Comet. Dit is een iconische treinreis van Chicago naar San Francisco. Met deze trein reizen ook miljonair August Reza en zijn dochter mee.
Net zoals in deel één weet Alex snel vrienden te maken. Samen hebben ze veel plezier in de trein en Alex leert hoe toveren werkt. Alex leert ook de dochter van de miljonair kennen, maar haar gedrag is soms een beetje vreemd.
Op een gegeven moment verdwijnt de dochter van de miljonair, ze is waarschijnlijk ontvoert. Ondanks dat haar gedrag een beetje gek was, besluit Alex om op de zaak te duiken. Samen met zijn nieuwe vrienden gaan ze op onderzoek uit en proberen ze te achterhalen wie de dochter van de miljonair ontvoert heeft. Wanneer er steeds een tand teruggevonden wordt, begint de spanning op te lopen. Zullen Alex en zijn vrienden deze zaak op kunnen lossen?

Deel twee is net zo heerlijk als deel één. De beschrijvingen zijn weer detailrijk, de vriendschappen weer hartverwarmend en het verhaal is weer spannend.
De opbouw van het verhaal is weer leuk gedaan. Alex begint met een rustige treinreis en heeft er dit keer ook echt zin in. Zijn tekenblok is mee, maar zijn game toestel heeft hij thuis gelaten, hij wil namelijk zoveel mogelijk genieten van de treinreis zelf.
Wanneer de dochter van de miljonair wordt ontvoert kan hij echter niet anders dan zich bemoeien met de zaak. Aangezien Alex heel gauw beelden kan vastleggen op papier, ziet hij dingen die anderen over het hoofd zien. Hierdoor heeft hij sneller door hoe de vork in de steel zit. Echter is hij maar een kind en wordt hij dus niet geloofd door de volwassenen. De frustraties die dit opleveren zijn heel overtuigend en komen realistisch over.
In het verhaal komt ook naar voren hoe onbedacht kinderen zijn van gevaar en dat maakt het verhaal ook een stuk realistischer. Naast dat ze zich bezig houden met de zaak, zijn er ook veel 'kinderproblemen' waar ze tegenaan lopen. Zo zijn ze bijvoorbeeld niet eerlijk tegenover oom Ben, omdat zij verwachten dat hij boos zal worden.
De schrijfstijl van M.G. Leonard en Sam Sedgman is net zoals in deel één erg fijn. De opbouw is prettig, de zinnen lopen soepel in elkaar over en het leest 'als een trein'. Het verhaal wordt daarnaast steeds spannender. De ontknoping van het verhaal vond ik origineel bedacht en erg leuk gedaan.

Naast dat ze boeken schrijft, is ze werkzaam als producent voor het Engelse Nationaal Theater. Sam Sedgman woont in Loden en heeft met "De Juwelendief" zijn eerste award-winning serie te pakken. Naast zijn schrijverswerk is hij een digital producer, ook voor het Engelse Nationaal Theater.
De illustraties in het verhaal, die zogenaamd door Alex zelf worden getekend, zijn ontworpen door Elisa Paganelli. De tekeningen zijn in het zwart-wit en geven de indruk dat het inderdaad zelf gemaakte tekeningen zijn, wat in dit verhaal erg belangrijk is. De details die erin voorkomen, zoals wanneer de trein getekend is, zijn erg mooi gedaan.

Such an amazing sequel to The Highland Falcon Thief! The only reason why it's not getting a full-on five stars is because I sort of guessed the ending. Not everything about it, but some of it.
I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!

What a delightful mystery! I continue to love following Hal on his train adventures, as he meets unique people along the way. I am also a sucker for a transportation mystery. Looking forward to book 3!

This series is so much fun! Packed full of action, adventure, mystery and fun, this is the perfect book for any reader. You can’t help getting caught up in the story and whisked away on the adventure with Hal, Uncle Nat and their friends. Reading this book made me once again want to go on this train journey. Mason and Hadley are great new characters who bring a different dynamic to the story and special skills that become important to the story. All of the characters are nicely fleshed out so there are plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing. Like the first book, one of my favourite aspects of this story is the relationship between Hal and Uncle Nat. I love the trust that Nat has in Hal, even if Hal is a little reluctant to share all of his findings with Nat. Elisa Paganelli’s illustrations are once again superb. I love the way that Elissa captures the characteristics and features of each character and makes them look like they are suspects. My favourite illustration in this book is the one of Hal sitting in their roomette with Uncle Nat, telling him everything. You can tell that Hal has his uncle’s complete attention. I can’t wait for more Adventures on trains!

After his last holiday with Uncle Nat, foiling the plans of a jewel thief, Hal is eager to go to America. What starts off as a fun holiday, with new friends and magic tricks, soon turns into another mystery, with a billionaire’s daughter being kidnapped. There is no shortage of suspects, as Hal has met some unusual characters on board the California Comet. Using his sharp observation skills and working with his new friends, Mason and Hadley, Hal will need to solve the case before the train reaches the end of the line.

M G Leonard is rapidly becoming an automatic favourite and I’m so glad I’m at the start of another new epic series of hers. (Also will read every book Sam Sedgeman does in auto from now on!).
I came straight from ‘The Highland Falcon’ book and launched into this one because these both are both so enjoyable and SO easy to read and enjoy. You get swept up into the story, excited to have another adventure with Hal and intrigued to see what he’s going to get up to this time.
I also love the vibes of these books and nothing can be better than getting sat comfy, putting on a train ambience on YouTube (I even found some following a similar route to Hal from Chicago to Emeryville and it really helped with further immersion as I listened to the audiobook!) - it’s the perfect stand in for if you can’t get on a train yourself and consume the book!
I mean, double decker trains?! Madness for a U.K. reader - my mind was blown. I loved the aspect of bringing US travel to us Brit’s and it was a great lesson in how things can differ across countries.
Hal meets more friends and sees more amazing sights upon the California Comet. There’s only the slight aside of a kidnap aboard which, for this young detective, is the perfect opportunity to build on his experience following a previous jewel thievery!
So quickly made my way through this and have rapidly requested the rest from my library so I can keep the momentum going.

I LOVED IT !!! This book surprised me in every way. I have never read any mysteries set in trains before. Reading this book was a great experience for me. I am looking forward to read more books like this. Till the climax I had no idea what is going to happen. The ending was amazing. I liked the descriptions of the view from the train the most. It felt as if I am travelling on California Comet with Hal and Uncle Nat. The writing style was capturing. The illustrations gave life to the story. I reccomend this book for everyone who loves reading. Read this book and do yourself self a favour. Who doesn't like a good mystery once in a while ?

Hal and his Uncle Nat are off on another amazing train journey, this time across America. Lots of mystery and adventure as Hal and his new friends realise there is something strange going on. With his clever drawings and problem solving mind, he earns the nickname Sherlock da Vinci, which is very apt for him!

Treinen en detective. Meer hoef ik hier niet aan toe te voegen. Tot zo!
Harrison gaat met oom Ben mee op zijn tweede avontuur. Ze gaan mee op een bijzondere reis door Amerika en Alex ontmoet weer een paar bijzondere types. En dan verdwijnt er ineens iemand…
Ik begin te wennen aan die Engelse paperbacks en aan het formaat. En als je het uit hebt kan je het altijd bij de plee neerleggen. Die Engelse boekjes kunnen prima een tweede leven als biologisch toiletpapier hebben. Het heeft wel wat. Maar als ik mijn experiment start (later hierover meer) is de Nederlandse hardcover een verademing. Het kost een paar cente maar dan hebbie ook wat zeg ik altijd maar.
Ben ik dus een beetje aan het lezen weet ik geloof ik hoe het zit! Nou ja... een beetje. Dit heb ik altijd hoor. En uiteindelijk wist ik het toch niet. Dus veel hoop heb ik niet. En dan is het tijd voor dat experiment! Als ik toch de vertaling in huis heb is het zonde om het niet aan te raken. Vanaf de helft ga ik verder in het Nederlands. Leuk hoor. Ineens een andere hoofdpersoon. Elke keer denk ik “Who is this Alex where they speaking of?”. Maar potjandorie! Wat leest dit boek in het Nederlands fijn. Het kan ook zijn dat ik wat moe ben en mijn brein het Engels niet helemaal lekker verwerkte. Weet jij veel.

Dat je gewoon weet hoe het zit. Omdat het op elkaar lijkt. Ach. Het was lekker!
En wist je dat een Amerikaanse trein thu-thunk doet en een Nederlandse da-doenk? Nee? Nu wel. Asjeblieft.
De ‘Exclusive Intellectuals Reading Society’ zoals ik de leesclub van @jufannesophie en mij altijd noem heeft dit boek uitgekozen als uitverkorene. Dus je kan bij haar lezen wat zij ervan vond!

Harrison gaat met oom Ben mee op zijn tweede avontuur. Ze gaan mee op een bijzondere reis door Amerika en Alex ontmoet weer een paar bijzondere types. En dan verdwijnt er ineens iemand…
Ik begin te wennen aan die Engelse paperbacks en aan het formaat. En als je het uit hebt kan je het altijd bij de plee neerleggen. Die Engelse boekjes kunnen prima een tweede leven als biologisch toiletpapier hebben. Het heeft wel wat. Maar als ik mijn experiment start (later hierover meer) is de Nederlandse hardcover een verademing. Het kost een paar cente maar dan hebbie ook wat zeg ik altijd maar.
Ben ik dus een beetje aan het lezen weet ik geloof ik hoe het zit! Nou ja... een beetje. Dit heb ik altijd hoor. En uiteindelijk wist ik het toch niet. Dus veel hoop heb ik niet. We gaan weer per spoor de hort op, dit keer met de California Zephyr, al heet hij in het boek wel anders. Het leven op de trein, zoals het in het boek beschreven wordt, spreekt weer tot de verbeelding. Hoe duur zou een ticket zijn, en kan iemand mijn vlucht naar de VS betalen alsjeblieft?
Een korte samenvatting van Boek 1 had best gemogen. Het is iets meer dan een jaar geleden dat ik dat gelezen heb, en in naam van alle goden, vergeef me, maar ik heb echt geen idee meer wie die Lenny juist is die soms vermeld wordt.
Feitelijk heb ik niet veel toe te voegen aan mijn bespreking bij Boek 1. Het zijn, naast Alex en zijn oom, allemaal compleet andere personages. Dat is eens een verandering. Ik vond Hadley echt tof om te lezen, met al haar goocheltrucs. Hélène eerst ook, maar op het einde... Wauw. Wat een verwend nest is me dat. Daar schortte toch iets aan. Maar gelukkig komt ze later terug in de realiteit terecht. En de volwassenen waren ook goed uitgewerkt! Christopher Hart verrast me heel positief.
Het verhaal zit goed in elkaar. Ik kreeg na een tijdje wel een vermoeden wat er gaande was, maar je past nooit alle stukjes mooi in elkaar natuurlijk, niet tot 'de detective' alles uit de doeken doet. Knap staaltje speurwerk om ineen te steken.
De vertaling is weer van Marce Noordenbos. Ondertussen weet ik dat zij ook alle Rick Riordan-boeken heeft vertaald. Over het algemeen was het een aangename vertaling, al raakte ik bij tijd en wijle wat geïrriteerd doordat 'gister' nogal vaak voorkomt - en in Vlaanderen gebruiken we die verkorte vorm niet. Maar dat terzijde - verder mocht het er zijn!

Just like the first one only with a different setting and a different cast of supporting characters. Another banger of a book. Yet again a wonderful ride. You go on a wonderful adventure with Hal and the other kids. I always love traveling by train and this book showed so many beautiful things whilst also sprinkling bits and pieces about the mystery. The twists and turns were done gracefully and the drawings are a nice touch to the story. I love the descriptions of the train and how you can see the changing landscape when you are in the train. I would love to make really cool trainrides again (instead of my normal commute). No book can make me excited about trains like the adventures on trains series. Heel fijn jeugdboek waardoor ik spontaan zin kreeg om een lange treinreis te maken. Ik kwam er thuis pas achter dat dit een 2de deel is, maar prima los te lezen. Ik ga zeker de andere delen ook lezen.
Wat ik misschien nog wel het leukste aan het verhaal vind is dat Alex de ontvoering oplost zonder hulpmiddelen behalve zijn tekeningen, het praten met vrienden en flink nadenken.
Wat ik wel een beetje jammer vind is dat wat je op de tekeningen in het boek ziet niet altijd precies overeenkomt met wat er beschreven wordt. Of dat door de vertaling komt of dat het een bewuste keuze van de illustrator is ... geen idee.

Well written, intriguing, although I did work out the how and why but not the who before the end of the book

I think it’s apt that I finished this on a metro! These are such great adventures filled with mystery, intrigue and gorgeous train journeys (that definitely make me wanna go on more trains!). I love Harrison - he’s so smart! I didn’t see the twist coming and I’m an adult, so I bet for kids this is a real fun thing! I loved the illustrations throughout (you can’t beat an illustration in my eyes!). Can’t wait to get the next one read now!
