A virtual memoir in letters by the beloved creator of the Moomins

Tove Jansson’s works, even her famed Moomin books, fairly teem with letters of one kind or another, from messages bobbing in bottles to whole epistolary novels. Fortunately for her countless readers, her life was no different, unfolding as it did in the letters to family, friends, and lovers that make up thi

I’m fascinated by the access suggested by letters or diaries, both to individuals and the times they lived through. I found these ones particularly engrossing, not just because I’m a Tove Jansson fan but also for the quality of the writing. As you’d expect if you’ve read her novels or stories, Jansson has an impressive ability to convey place and mood, although the tone and content of her letters changes dramatically depending on who she’s talking to. This carefully-curated selection’s taken fro ...more

‘All my great joys, all my agonies, all my thoughts’

Tove Jansson, best known as the creator of the Moomin characters, was a multi-disciplinary artist: writer, cartoonist, painter, sculptor – and a letter-writer, now very much a lost art. She almost always took time, even at the height of her fame, to reply to thousands of letters from her fans (including me as a child in Uganda in the 60s). This fresh collection with new commentaries covers 50 years of her correspondence with family, loved ones

Wyjątkowy, świetnie opisany i przygotowany zbiór.

Being Swedish, Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories were a great part of my childhood and her books, poems, illustrations and prose (especially Höstvisa) are still a huge part of my life and something I come back to every now and then. That being said, I realised, reading this collection of letters sent to people in her life that I knew next to nothing about Jansson as a person. I’d been so engaged in her works (primarily Moomin) that I’d never really thought about who she was. And that’s why I enjoyed ...more

This is a giant warm cuddle of a book. It took me a while to read as the letters are many and to some extent a little repetitive, but I loved effectively being able to hear Tove Jansson speak honestly to the people she was close to. The book only includes Tove’s letters, not the other half, so there is always part of the conversation missing, which also makes it a little bit of a mystery puzzle.

The correspondence is organised by addressee, beginning with letters that Tove sent to her family when

I never really had the opportunity to get into the Moominverse, but I have friends who are, so that curiosity led me to this book. Jansson's maturity progresses visibly as things progress from her art student days in Paris to making a living as an artist during wartime. The amount of terms left untranslated but defined after some letters is helpful but also got annoying as it all added up. Still, for what is basically an epistolary biography, this is good, but also perhaps too much detail that o ...more

No i są ilustracje!

Tunnelmallinen, hauska ja terävä kurkistus 1900-luvun alkupuoliskon Helsinkiin ja taiteilijan arkeen. Saaristoelämää, ihmissuhteita, bisnestä sulassa sovussa.

Tove Jansson oli innokas kirjeiden kirjoittaja. Hän kirjoitti usein perheelleen, ystävilleen ja rakastetuilleen. Muumien luoman kuuluisuuden myötä hänen suhteensa kirjeiden kirjoittamiseen muuttui. Tove Jansson sai keskimäärin 2 000 ihailijakirjeittä vuodessa. Hän vastasi itse lähes kaikkiin. Kirjeiden kirjoittamisesta tuli velvollisuus. Silti Tove nautti yhä kirjeiden kirjoittamisesta läheisilleen, kun aika tuntui oikealta ja kirjoittaminen kävi pakottomasti. Maya Vannille elokuussa 1963 kirjoi ...more

This is a collection of letters Tove Jansson wrote to her friends and family and loved ones and provide an insight into her life over a period of over 50 years. We get to peak into her student days in Paris, life in Helsinki and the archipelago, her artistry and friendship and love of those around her.

The book contains 160 letters and is order by addressee (we don't get to see the letters written to Tove) and rough chronological order. I haven't actually read any biographies of her life so I le

Tove Jansson wrote thousands of letters, and this is only a small sampling of them. As such, it’s probably too much to expect a comprehensive view of her life to emerge from them. What you see is compelling — her writing is observant, open, and heartfelt, full of interesting pictures of her life in different places over several decades. But it’s a collection of snapshots rather than a sustained narrative.

One of the editors of this book has written a full biography of Jansson; our library doesn’t

"How lovely to get your letter! I carry it with me everywhere".

"The most important place in the house is the hall mat where the letters arrive with their soft thud".

Sorry. DNF. Kinda dull. You would have to be really really really interested in this woman to care about these letters. Just not terribly interesting to me.

In a time when letter writing is rare and electronic and instant messages are the

Thank you to NetGalley to providing me with an ARC of this book produced by University of Minnesota Press. My Canadian childhood had no exposure to Moomin stories. As an adult with young children, I found Tove Jansson’s beloved books in my local library branch. I’ve read several Moomin books as well as two autobiographies and three of her adult fiction books. “The Summer Book” is an exceptionally exquisite novel. So, I came to this letter collection with a modest amount of knowledge but much res ...more

Tove wrote letters, lots of letters.  They were to family, friends, readers and more.  Of these the editors include 160  written between 1932 and 1988.  Each section of the book begins with an introduction that helps to place the letters in context.  For example, in letters to family, it is noted that Tove left Helsinki to study in Stockholm and also spent time in Paris and Italy.  The book includes photographs of Tove and those to whom she wrote.  There are also drawings, as for instance, a map ...more

Tove Jansson was born and died in Helsinki, Finland. As a Finnish citizen whose mother tongue was Swedish, she was part of the Swedish-speaking Finns minority. Thus, all her books were originally written in Swedish.

Although known first and foremost as an author, Tove Jansson considered her careers as author and painter to be of equal importance.
