The Jungle Book #2

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and the Mystery in the Garden

Rate this book
Here's a tale for every child who does something just because he's been told DON'T!” Rikki Tikki Tavi's like that, too. So when he's warned to stay right in front of the house, he can't resist wandering farther and farther away…straight into the clutches of a sneaky snake in the wild grass who's out to cause trouble for the good-hearted mongoose.

I recall reading the original Jungle Book as a kid, but only hazily. It was my first time reading a "chapter book" with my 4 year old godson, though, and that was a neat experience. It was easy enough to follow along with most of it, but just long enough & challenging in that way that we needed to stop & review/discuss what had just happened. Being a 27 year old nonparent, and having been a fairly precocious young reader, I haven't spent much time at all with chapter books, so it's nice to see in action how they function as a bridge to bigger, longer works.

This was a lovely story with vivid imagery. If you can get past a "white man's burden"-ish crack from Kipling.
