Fantasy/Romance I am so relieved they got their happily ever after, I would have cried buckets of tears if they hadn't.
If this was a movie, it would be a major blockbuster, think Gladiator plus Ladyhawke. This is one story that has held the test of time, with two of the most commendable characters I've come across.
I've read lots of stories that made my cry, this one went a step further by leaving me with a serious lump in my throat. Good thing I'm writing this instead of talking about it.
This is my favorite kind of story, where the hero and the heroine are never at odds with each other, they are each willing to sacrifice their lives for each other, which is what makes for such a harrowing ending. The danger in this book is so well done, more so than any fantasy or romance I can remember.
And there is a wonderful mystery woven in as well, does anyone know if the author wrote the full story of Tal and his raven? I need that book. Right now!

Read and reviewed in 1997 when I was a gushing fool.
I hesitated reading this book, not because I have anything against Justine Dare/Davis (she is one of my favorite authors) but because FIRE HAWK is the third in Dare's Hawk trilogy, and I have a thing about reading books in order and I don't yet have my hands on the 2nd book HEART OF THE HAWK yet. When I heard Dare was taking a different approach to the trilogy - writing them backwards - I decided to take a chance and read her latest FIRE HAWK first. And I'm real glad I did because, IMO, I think this book should be read first (not to mention it's a WONDERFUL read!). To my understanding all of these books are related by a mysterious tome that appears in each story when there is only one member of the Hawk line remaining. This book, FIRE HAWK, explains the origin of the mysterious tome that guides the Hawk family and introduces the characters who began the Hawk line back in the tragic and brutal medieval time period.
Jenna and her clan have managed to live in peace for years in their magical glade while the world around them is torn by war and death. But all of that comes to an end when an evil Warlord sets his sights on their glade and slowly begins killing them off as they wander from their safe haven ignorant of what awaits them. After her Brother is murdered Jenna is named Hawk - leader of the clan - an honor she never wanted. With this heavy responsibility on her shoulders, fear and anguish in her heart, she realizes the only way to save the few remaining members of her clan is by seeking out the mystical warrior known only as Kane, a man she fears may not even exist except in legends. She hopes he will teach her people, who've never learned how to fight, how to defend themselves and possibly save their magical land from invasion.
Kane has escaped his brutal and haunted past and found solitude on his isolated mountain. He is less than thrilled when Jenna shows up and asks him to don his warrior garb and help her out. He repeatedly refuses but her persistent arguments and his increasing attraction to her force him to take drastic measures to get her the heck away from him ASAP. He's bad for her and he knows it so he offers her a bargain that is sure to have her running in terror. But he screws up big time because he misjudges her courage and love for her people and she accepts his very ungentlemanly deal. Now he feels guilty and is in one heck of a mess but he can't take back his offer so he begins her lessons and puts his his heart in danger.
Kane and Jenna's love story is not an easy one. They have a lot of pain and obstacles to face before they can find love but with the help of Kane's gorgeous wizard friend, Tal, they get a little magical push to help them along. Both are strong, courageous and likable characters. And although the book is filled with adventure the story never loses focus of the love story. The sensual tone and the heart-wrenching emotions it tugged out of me kept me anxiously turning the pages and dropping everything to get back to the book. If I have anything to complain about it would be that Tal's interesting past is never fully explained. I'm going to be really bummed if Dare doesn't write his story!!! Anyway, I very highly recommend it, especially to those who like wounded/tortured heroes and courageous heroines

January 29, 2021I absolutely loved Heart of the Hawk but I’ve tried twice to get into this and it’s just not gripping me. Maybe because the previous book was a western and this is more paranormal/fantasy which is not really my thing. Oh well.

It was an interesting read with a paranormal twist. He was a warrior who had escaped to the mountains to seek peace and solitude. She was the leader of her village seeking a warrior to help fight the evil that had encroached upon their peaceful life.

This book was somewhat elusive - none of the local UBS had it, so I found myself searching evilbay last year. It does complete the series. But I'm more interested in the wizard (whose situation reminds me of Ladyhawke)
So let's see...
The H is a former leader of a warlord's army - he found he no longer had the stomach for what his psychopathic boss/father wanted. He's become a hermit.
The h is the leader of a small clan of people who reside in a protected glade. The warlord wants the glade added to his holdings and is picking the clan off. She goes to the H for help. He spends the first half - 2/3 of the book teaching her. She goes home, voice in his head tells him she needs help, he leaves his mountain and goes to see her - and finds out the enemy is dear old dad. Interestingly enough, the last third of the book is less than a week, yet the first 2/3 or so was a month. Uh Huh.
There is no clear time period; just that this was before Arthur. There are vague references to hell/Hades, and suggestions that being a wizard could get you burned at the stake, but no clear sign of Christianity - or really, any religion. No clue where this was - was it the British Isles pre-Roman? Europe? I'd guess somewhere in Europe since there were mountain peaks that maintained a snow cover year round. But a fortress seems out of place, so does a serpent capable of eating a human. And it isn't exactly fantasy since there is a western historical and a contemporary in the series. So, somewhere on Earth for sure. Yeah - the anal-retentive side of me had a hard time with this.
More...annoying...though...was...the...overuse....of...these...little...boogers. When a word or punctuation starts to stand out, you know you've overused it.

Fire Hawk is Book 3 of The Hawk Trilogy by Justine Davis. However, this trilogy is one that goes backwards in time. Book 1, Wild Hawk is contemporary with Book 2, Heart of the Hawk being a western story and this one is early medieval times. Each book is connected by the Hawk family legacy of a magical book that appears when there is only one surviving family member. This is the beginning of that family history that the book has supernaturally documented.
Kane and Jenna are strong individuals who wish for peace. Jenna’s clan has suddenly lost their peaceful existence and Kane is a former warrior that she seeks to out to help. As they work through the complications and differences of opinions a romance begins to grow. I loved the wizard and the help he gave to the romance as he pushes these two together. In fact, I would love for Tal to have his own story. Perhaps he already does since Fire Hawk is a re-issue.
In 2015, Fire Hawk is still an interesting and engaging read. Time has not hurt this story at all.

I really wanted to like this book...but I really didn't. It started off so well, heroine wants to save her people and will risk anything to do so. She finds what she is looking for and risks it all for her clan. The characters were well developed, but there comes to a point where they are over developed. The story dragged and instead of dialogues you got character thoughts for 3 pages! Half the time it was the same thoughts you read 7 pages before! I got to the point where I skipped and glanced at pages. I know inner thoughts are important, but there comes a time when you just got to stop them. There was a good heartfelt ending. I would say the price for the book was not worth it.

I know this is an older book, but really good books never go out of style. That being said, "Fire Hawk" is one of those. Historical romance with a bit of the mystical, the story of Kane, a man with a horrible past and Jenna, the Hawk leader was such fun to read. While reading the story of love, tragedy, and two people finding who they are and what was to come, I found the pages flew by and before I knew it, I was reading a HEA. This is a book for all ages with some violence, but a lot of fun with the fantasy. If a well written romance of a long ago past is your genre, then I would recommend reading "Fire Hawk". I would like to thank NetGalley and BelleBooks for gifting me with a copy of "Fire Hawk" and asking for my honest opinion. This is mine. 4.5 Stars!

This is book three in "The Hawk Trilogy" series and the first one I have read by this author. This is a paranormal book with wizards, magic and set somewhat in medieval time. Our heroine is Jenna whose Clan is now being disturbed from their peaceful existence. Jenna goes to our hero, Kan who used to be a swordsman but has been warned not to take the sword up again or it could be death to him. But they do go off to try and solve her family/clan issue and along the way find that they care for each other greatly..also thanks to some extra wizard help that is. Great read if you are looking for something different with some excitement. Hope you enjoy the book too!

Outstanding book!
Wizards,Warriors,love. What a book! This book is part of a trilogy, it won't matter in which order you read...they are all fantastic. I started with the cowboy, then the businessman, and lastly the warrior. Strong woman...Jenna Hawk, leader of her clan must find Kane the Warrior to teach her how to help her clan fight off an invader. This is the beginning of a dynasty....a true "keeper" on your shelf.
