A delightful and uplifting story of a young boy who learns that happiness is a choice from a very wise whale. Colorful illustrations help to keep smaller children engaged but the lessons from this story are important for people of all ages.

I'm always wary about books with a mission to give 'life messages' to kids, but this one won me over.

Koa is a boy, who will be the leader of his tribe one day, and it's his job to see what's written on the great whale's tail. After all, it's a message which hold the key to an important strength and power. Wally, the whale, is more than happy to help but since the last word on his tail is smudged, agrees to assist Koa in figuring out what that last word is.

This tail...or rather, tale...made me smile. Firstly, there's the wonderful ease of adding diverse characters by having Koa as the future leader of a tribe. Second, these are characters to love. Koa is really determined to be the best leader he can be and hits the task with determination and enthusiasm. The Wally is horribly wise, a little playful, and carries the love and care of a favorite grandfather... (and interestingly enough, this book mentions a grandfather in the 'thanks' at the end). So, the entire thing already radiates goodness and wholesomeness.

While there is a very distinct purpose and message in these pages, the story does not let itself become a slave to that. Koa is on a journey, and his discoveries or thoughts are entertaining the entire way through. Young listeners will connect with him and love some of his guesses.

The end of the book holds more treasures. There are a few questions to open up a discussion about the meaning of true happiness, but there's also an entire section about 'little known' facts over whales. Also...and I wish this was pointed out at the beginning of the story...there's a bee hidden in every illustration. So, to say that this one is a book, which grabs kids' interest is an understatement. And the message is one extremely important and necessary, especially today.

I received a complimentary copy and truly enjoyed Koa and Wally's adventure.

I received this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. I'd like to thank the publisher for doing this giveaway. Otherwise I might not have discovered them and this gem of a book. I cannot recommend this book enough. I truly think this book has a message for anyone at any age, though since it is a picture book, it is geared, I would say, for pre-school to 3rd grade. There is quite a bit of text and typically those reading aloud to pre-school children for a story time choose books with less text, but the story itself is so interactive and builds upon itself so well that I have confidence in trying it out for story time myself. The story has so many dimensions and opportunities for learning and growing and created an interactive and suspense-filled experience that gave the story momentum. I loved this book so much that I plan on buying a copy as a gift for the little ones in my life and keeping the review copy as a cherished part of my own collection. The mission and initiates of the publisher are commendable! To quote from their website: "One hundred percent of profits from the EQ Explorers children's book series (yes, all our profits) help underserved children through the non-profit Kapalua Cove Foundation. The foundation provides direct donations to charitable initiatives and donates books to orphanages, remote libraries, care centers, and more." https://www.eqexplorers.com/we-give

I won this e-book in a Goodreads Giveaway.

My six-year-old grandson really enjoyed this book and asked to read it two nights in a row. It is a great lesson for both kids and adults: "You can choose to be happy no matter what. And ... when you choose to be happy no matter what you are in charge. You keep your energy and power."

I think it is laudable that profits from the book go towards helping under-served kids.

Highly recommended.

I received a free copy of this book from a Goodreads giveaway. This is the third book that I have won from author Kim Linette and I have absolutely loved all of them! The EQ Explorers series is such a great introduction to emotional health for kids of all ages (and for adults too!!). I love the primary message throughout all of these books that it is OKAY and NORMAL to feel all kinds of different emotions! I can see how these books could go such a long way to normalize emotions and foster healthy emotional expression for kiddos. The illustrations are also so gorgeous and colorful! The physical copy of this book is beautiful and such high quality. I’m glad to finally have a physical copy of a Kim Linette book to cherish after having previously won (and fallen in love with) Kindle copies. I am not personally a mom, but I will most definitely have these books in my kids’ library if or when I ever have them.

My kids and I really enjoyed this book. This book is about happiness - and the examples showcased are so relevant for kids (and adults alike!). I really like kids' books which speak to a larger audience as I feel that is a difficult thing to achieve. Presented as a game initially, the book allows for many kinds of interactions while reading with the kids- asking questions, guessing games, discussing feelings, etc.

Lucky me! I was randomly selected to receive a free book in a giveaway sponsored by the book's author, Kim Linette. This is a well written charming book illustrated by James Loram. I would encourage parents to read and discuss this book with their children. The author addresses various emotions in a non-threatening and age appropriate manner. A little lesson in phonics doesn't hurt either. Well done!

What can I say? It's a okay book but it was just a bit too childish for me. Maybe I'm just too old to enjoy this but I'm more of a Enemy Pie or Chrysanthemum type of person, but I can also understand that those books are more sophisticated. Overall, the pictures are cute and I like the Hawaii vibes.

Positive message

I was pleasantly surprised that it first took so long to give the answer to the saying on the whales tail but also that Wally took the time to give examples for why. My kids did not guess the happiness is a choice but they did understand why by the end

I won this book in a Giveaway here on Goodreads and my review is my honest opinion about the book.

I enjoyed reading this book to my 2 year old especially with the illustrations which captured her attention from beginning to end. The book has a wonderful message regarding choosing your own happiness and not getting stuck on your own feelings. The message was wonderful and I am sure that I will reread this to her several times throughout the years especially when she starts to struggle with handling her feelings.
