I swear, with each book justice is just within our grasp when the author yanks it just out of reach again. It’s frustrating and addictive and I feel like when this series finally ends I be able to breathe again.

I’ve enjoyed each pairing in the series. I like how each mate the dragon kings find, have a part to play in the overall story. Noreen is a powerful player that has barely tapped into what she can do. I can’t wait to see what more will come from her. I did feel she got judged too much and I struggled a bit with that.

I loved how all-in Cain was. He didn’t hesitate to give Noreen his trust despite her being a dark fae. He was protective and fought for her. He did have a moment where I wanted to shake him, but overall he was good for Noreen.

I can’t seem to get over how much gets revealed in each book, and yet more questions pop up. I want to know who Rhi’s Dragon King is. I want to know who Con’s mate is. I want to know how the final battle will go down. I have a few predictions. Hopefully I’ll learn if I’m right or wrong soon.

Oh my goodness! Oh my goodness! So much stuff happens, but no spoilers here....

Cain and Noreen are perfect for an enemies to lovers story. Noreen is part of the Others, or is she? Great romance between the two of them. Plus we find out what happened to UB!tch, Rhi, and Balledyn. We learn more about Moreann and the Others. Erith and the Reapers make several appearances. Of course, the bad gal gets away. We are so close to finding out who Rhi's Dragon King is....

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Oh man that ending! Flame was a really good book for being the 17th in this freaking series. So many things happened that I'm not quite sure how to handle the ending. I really enjoyed getting to see Noreen and Cain get closer together. They were definitely an enemies to loves kind of romance with some much needed drama added.

The one thing I loved about this book was that we got some answers - FINALLY - about certain things or people. I honestly love when that happens but now I have even more questions after finishing this one. Not sure if the 18th book will be the last of this series but I'm prepared to dive into it whenever I can get my hands on it.

With seventeen books in this series already, one would think that Grant would someday run out of ideas to write about. However, I do find that this series continues to be one that I look forward to. It has a softer touch than some of the othe paranormal romances I read. However, I like that there’s something very reliable and comforting about Grant’s writing. I know that I can count on her to deliver an entertaining book.

With FLAME, some interesting things begin to happen when an email is received from a member of the Other. Noreen is horrified by the Others’ plan for the Dragon Kings and so she secretly reaches out to warn them. I found this concept to be really fascinating and interesting. It’s definitely not one that I get to read often, so with that being said, I found myself really intrigued by this book. I like that Grant can come up with various couples in her series and having a book that features Cain and Noreen, a Dark Fae, it just made things so fun to read.

I would definitely recommend this book. It’s one of the few paranormal romance series that I think still has the spark of uniqueness.

This was suicide. Noreen knew it.

But there wasn’t another way. Which left her no other choice. No matter what happened, she would pay for the consequences of her actions.

It was the least she could do.

She swallowed hard and stared at the laptop screen sitting before her. On her left was a cup of tea with tendrils of heat rising from it. She looked up and let her gaze slowly wander the cafe.

The glamour and magic she used prevented humans from seeing her true coloring—or feeling the attraction they always experienced when a Fae was near. It was necessary to keep a low profile.
Though it wouldn’t keep her hidden from everyone.

Noreen glanced out the windows of the internet cafe to the passersby. The world looked normal. But then again, it usually did right before everything went to shite.

She didn’t like being so exposed. It was only a matter of time before she was found. There wasn’t a single person she trusted. Already, they scrutinized her every word. She was a good liar, but when so many were double-checking the things she told them, it didn’t matter how thorough she was. They would find out.

Of all the options she had, this was the best one. There was no way she could walk up to a Dragon King. They would likely kill her before she got the first word out. She opted not to ring them either since she would prefer to keep her identity a secret.

Noreen quickly crafted her message using a buffer email account and a VPN. The virtual private network would allow her to make anyone who read the email think she was halfway around the world. With a throwaway email as well as using Proton Mail as the host, she was as anonymous as she could get.

As soon as she hit send, she signed out of everything and rose from her seat. No one around paid any attention to her. She tugged her baseball hat low over her face and strode from the cafe.

When she walked outside, it felt as if every eye in Scotland was focused on her. The nearest Fae doorway was over thirty miles away. She could teleport there, but there were those who could follow the trail of her power. Was this how humans felt? Always having to do everything on their own without the use of magic? She hated it.

However, if she wanted to live, she would do it.

And she very much wanted to live. Now more than ever.

Noreen, a dark fae was in danger and needed a Dragon King to listen to her and hopefully help her before he killed her. She had been alive for thousands of years and had once believed the Others belief that The Dragon Kings should be killed, but she no longer felt that way and now wanted to help the Dragon Kings overthrow the Others so they were no longer a danger to the dragons.

Cain is picked to go to Noreen and make sure it isn't a trap and if it isn't offer to help keep her safe from the Others. But she thinks the Others are on to her and she's scared. It takes a little persuasion on Cain's part but she agree's to go with him.

They find the perfect place to hide but there's more to this realm than they first think and they might know who is behind the magical transformation. Rhi is powerful and I knew that from the last book but I didn't realize just how powerful she was. So while Cain and Noreen are talking, getting to know one another more and she tells him what she knows of the Others, Rhi is facing a truth of her own.

Once Cain finds out what he needs to, he heads back to tell his fellow Dragon Kings so they can prepare but not before getting a lot closer to Noreen than he would have thought possible. They make for an opposites attract kind of couple, but it works.

But then a horrible secret comes to light and I could have cried for the both of them. In fact a lot of secrets and betrayals are revealed which led this story in an entirely new way. This story ends up going in a new direction that I couldn't have seen coming and it ended masterfully. I was rooting for the Dragon Kinds and all of their mates. I am loving this series so much. Definitely looking forward to the next book.

Disclosure: I was given an eARC of this book via NetGalley but all opinions and thoughts are my own.

Flame was a great enemies-to-lovers story! Noreen and Cain were a whirlwind of attraction, and then...BOOM! I don’t know why I never see certain surprises coming! But darned, if I don’t dive right in and consume them like really good cookies!

I want to say Grant has hit the pinnacle of this long running storyline, but you never know with her characters and this is by far one of the juiciest plots I’ve read in a good while! I’ve long been intrigued by the twists her stories take, but holy smokes! Flame actually surpassed my expectations and had so many reveals....I’m still giddy from all the excitement!

I’ll be really good and stop rambling. I’m just one happy reader :)

I received an advance reader copy from Netgalley/St. Martins Press and this is my honest review.

‘Flame’, the next installment of Donna Grant’s Dark King series, was a overall pretty decent read minus the whole instant love *eyeroll* situation happening. I won’t go too much into the romance aspect of Noreem and Cain relationship but dayum. It was quick and was the only real turn off of this novel. I enjoyed how the author always somehow someway features the previous characters in her most recent releases and how each of them contribute to the storyline which I probably should start reading from the get-go but that’s a story for another day.

This is a sizzling addition to this paranormal saga, with shocking revelations, hot romance and plenty of surprises, twists and suspense to keep readers enthralled and on the edge of their seats till the very end.

When an email is received which indicates someone has useful insider information to help the Dragon Kings, they use their skills to ascertain just who sent it and Cain sets out to verify if they are telling the truth or this is a lie and a trap. He certainly didn’t anticipate meeting Noreen, one of the Dark Fae who has been working with the Others for years as they attempt to kill all the Dragon Kings, to wipe them from this world. As Noreen is convinced that a Dragon King murdered her parents, can she really want to protect them now ?Neither of them had foreseen their mutual attraction or that she would be his mate! However, the knowledge she has regarding the Others systems of working, their plans and more put her in danger from them. Can he help keep her safe? Will the knowledge help save the Dragon Kings from annihilation by the Others? Will their potential romance have any chance to be the start of their HEA together or will fate tear them apart?

This is the latest in this series and I'd definitely recommend that you read these in order because there's a lot of catching up to do otherwise. Plus there's a spin-off series about Reapers that greatly adds to the world building.
The Dragon Kings are currently at war with The Others who have powerful magic and have been secretly plotting and planning for decades. So when a member of The Others emails to offer information Cain is nominated to go investigate . He discovers Noreen who is a Dark Fae and has had a change of heart about being a member of The Others . Trouble is by helping the Dragon Kings she's put herself in serious danger but Cain has a cunning plan !
I really enjoyed this and its clearly building up because there are numerous clues here about a certain Dragon King and a Light Fae heavens who am I kidding it's blindingly obvious but my lips are sealed. This was a good story with an interesting twist but I just didn't particularly enjoy the romance. Perhaps it was just too quick but the overall storyline was very entertaining and I look forward to reading the next book.

OMG Donna, why?! When I received the arc for Flame I immediately dropped all other books. Because I really, really needed to see what would happen with Rhi. She definitely deserves a happy ending with Con, but it is still not happening (aaarrrghh). Of course, this story is about Cain, one of the remaining single Dragon Kings and Noreen, a dark fae.
When Noreen reaches out for the Dark Kings, she knows she is basically killing herself. Because the moment the Others know what she has done, she will be hunted and killed. But she can't allow the Others to do what they are about to do. She didn't count on her attraction to Cain, however. The disgruntled, wary warrior, who really doesn't trust her. And how could he trust her, when he was betrayed before?
As usual, Donna's twists and turns are incredible and we see Rhi at her best. However, we also see Con slowly crumbling into despair. He is hurting so bad, same as Rhi. So please, Donna, give them a happy ending. They deserve it. And can Usaeil finally be killed please?! Five out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

All of Donna Grant's books are worth the read. This Dark Kings series keeps the reader constantly moving with all the characters and amazing drama that is laid out on the pages. I would suggest that this series be read from the being because the story is very complex and contains many characters. This installment brings us Noreen who has been a member of the OTHERS but wishes to shift her alliance to the Dragon Kings. She finds romance with the Dragon King Cain but finds herself put to the test to ascertain her truthfulness. "A copy of this book was provided by St. Martin's Press via NetGalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."

A story of passion and intrigue I never find myself bored or lacking when I read one of Grants book! Flame takes the stories of the dragons and the fate of their world to another level and kept me on the edge of my seat! Since I first entered their world I haven’t wanted to leave and each book fills a place in my soul I didn’t know was bare!

Cain and Noreens story is one of my favorite so far of the Kings and I can’t wait to see what fate has in store!

My review :

When a Dark Fae sides with the Dragon Kings, where is the truth and who lies ...

Before anything, I must say discovering an author’s work with the seventeenth book in a series is probably not the best way to appreciate it.
Why I was given a crash course to pick this and there the many components of the background plot and the many supernatural beings and their ramifications and interactions between them. Because while I have read about shifters or changelings and vampires through Mrs Nalini Singh’s work, they do not interact like any others shifters or vampires as they are usually depicted in other authors world. So here, it is the classic shifters/faes/druids/sorcerers ...

At first I was a bit lost, I am thankful that I got from time to time a crash course about the background plot, yet with so many characters, it can be a bit confusing. Still the more I progressed in my reading, the more I was eager to know about the Dragon Kings, and the ending leaves me wondering about Rhi, Con, Henri and Melissa.
This was no short read, thus I finished it late last night. And while it ends with a happily for now for the lead couple, the epilogue leaves many questions yet to answer.
As I have no idea about the other Dragon Kings, i can only talk about the main hero here, Cain.
With such a name, I was not sure what to expect.
Cain is in fact a silent and protective observer. He assists his brethren but keeps quiet his own feelings.
Noreen is so much more than what her appearance as a dark Fae lets transpire, she is the Noreen who wants to save the Dragon Kings but also the one who was on the Others side. She was shaped by her parents’ circumstances death, and from there it influenced her every move.
Together they have an instant recognition, and while I saw some twists and turns coming, it was an entertaining read, and every follower of these series will appreciate the progression of the narrative, coming closer to its resolution.

I received this book for free from Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The Flame is the precursor to the last book of the Dark Kings series. Things are so heightened right now and the Flame just took it even higher!

Cain seems like a laid back yet loyal King. He is determined to check out this lead the Kings have received. The whole book though, the question in the back of you mind is, "is this a trick". Things are not as they seem, but Cain seems to be positive and believe what is in front of him. I didn't know whether I wanted to slap him and tell him to be more cautious, or defend what seemed to be his true happiness.

I did not trust Noreen. She claims to be a deserter of the Others, yet the Others have proved to be beyond tricky. Noreen could be a really good actress. The author seems to take you on a roller coaster ride with Noreen.

I was on edge throughout most of The Flame. The excitement continues to build. Rhi is going through major changes and we can't help but wonder if the Dark in her will win out. I'm pleading with the good in Rhi to win. Just another aspect of this book to keep you fascinated and engaged.

I'm beside myself with excitement for Inferno. Releasing THIS WEEK! I believe this finale is going to blow my mind! This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

This is Cain’s story…and I would give his story 4 stars. Cain is so nice compared to most of the other Dragon Kings. He is calm, kind, sweet, and until about halfway through the book, tolerant. He doesn’t get anxious or angry at what is happening. The story for him turns at that point, and he finally shows the dragon side of himself, letting us see his life before the dragons were sent away. Noreen starts out as a frightened woman, who runs into Cain. She stays that way until she meets Rhi. For Cain and Noreen, the story runs along much as you’d expect it to. Then, about midway through the book, things begin to change, and happen, to both of them and to several others. From this point to the end of the book, it’s a 5-star read. Donna Grant weaves together some of the ongoing plot points, and gives us clues to the next couple of books in this series. As always, this book is well written, and you’ll be halfway in before you know it. I can’t wait to see how she’ll deal with all the loose ends that are still in play. I’ve read the book twice already, and still am finding parts that I didn’t catch on my first read. Read her books-enjoy the ride! *I received and ARC of this book to read, and this is my honest opinion.

WOW!! This book is amazing and it really got me hooked into the story. So much is revealed in this book and I am so sad that the series is almost over but I know I will be reading the entire series again in the future.
This is book 17 in the Dark Kings series and I do recommend you start from the very beginning because you will understand the character more .

I very much recommend this book and this series.
I give this 5 out of 5.

I could not wait to get my hands on Flame. It's literally been one of my most highly anticipated reads of 2020, and it did not disappoint in being everything I hoped it'd be - original, unputdownable, and as action-packed and explosive as the previous novels of this series were.

It also did not disappoint in blowing my mind, and leaving me completely and utterly speechless.

With Donna Grant, I never know what to expect from this series of hers as this world is so vast and complex that there are no limits to the magic and dangers of it. With Dragon Kings, Druids, Light Fae and Dark Fae in the picture, the game can change at any moment. And with the Others at play? The game most definitely changed, and my heart is honestly still racing at all that was delivered here.

Noreen is a Dark Fae, and is a prime member of the Others. She has her reasons for wanting to see the Dragon Kings perish, but for the last few years Noreen has been battling with a change of heart when she discovers things about the Others that she doesn't like. So Noreen does the only thing she can think of to do: she reaches out to the Dragon Kings with a warning.

It's then that Cain is sent out to track Noreen down and find out everything she knows about the Others. He wants the truth and answers to all of his questions, but more than anything he expects an in on how to take the Others down once and for all. What he wasn't expecting was to find his mate.

Nor was he expecting for the events that'd fall into place as the story goes on...

This seventeenth instalment to this immense series was as thrilling as I knew it'd be, more so when we got those chapters that focus on the many subplots of this story, and are told in other characters' perspectives; from Moreann and those with the Others, to Erith and her Reapers, to Rhi, and Con, and even Henry (who's chapters I LOVED, were utterly SHOCKING, and had me CRAVING for more).

But that's where my 4.25 Star rating comes in.

I'll be honest when I say that I was more invested into the subplots of this story at first, than I was with the actual main plot that revolved around Cain and Noreen. It's just that I, personally, felt like we weren't getting anything new, and even though I devoured this novel from start to finish, there were moments throughout where I felt a tad bored - like when I had to read about the history of the DK's once again, and follow along on the insta-love aspect of this story that I just didn't care to read.

Luckily, as this story went on, things did start to pick up, and soon I became hooked to every aspect of this novel, especially when Donna Grant delivered that impressive plot twist that BLEW MY MIND!

Did I have any clue that THAT would happen? Hell no.
Was I shocked when those many bombshells were dropped? Hell YES.
Am I now craving for the next and final book of this thrilling and explosive series? FUCK YES!

Flame was phenomenal. It was BRILLIANT! And it was an epic addition to an immense universe that answered many of the questions I had from past books' of this series, but it's now left me with many, many MORE questions that I'm now dying for answers for. Cain and Noreen had amazing chemistry together, their story took many unexpected turns that kept me on the edge of my seat, and I'm now left highly anticipating for the final book of this series, Inferno.

Because that last chapter before the Epilogue? It broke my heart to read, and it now only makes me want Con's story in my hands all the more.

Once again, Donna Grant has written another electrifying novel in her world of Dragon Kings, fae, druids, Reapers, Others, and some whose ancestry is as yet unrevealed. Flame provides non-stop action from start to finish, beginning with Noreen’s determination to reveal the Others’ plans to take Earth from the Dragon Kings, Cain’s desire to help her in any way possible, and more. Some of the old players are still very much in the game (Usaeil, Rhi, Erith, Cael, Con, Ulrik, Henry, ) and several newer ones likely will have a part to play as well (Moreanne, Orun, Noreen, Melisse, Rolmir.)

A few characters/items from previous novels are only briefly mentioned in Flame and it is unclear what their contributions will be in the final battle; for example, Xaneth, the missing weapon, and more. What can we expect from the TruthSeeker, the JusticeBringer, the Druids of Skye, the Warriors, and the Reapers? Will the dragons ever be able to return to Earth?

The last chapter and the epilogue of Flame hint at things to come. The battle lines have been drawn. I’ve been waiting for this final battle for many years now. Bring it on!

Flame book 17 in the Dark Kings series features Cain, King of the Navy’s and Noreen, a dark Fae. While their story is the main focus of the book, there’s a whole lot of other plot lines that are unraveling throughout the tale. Something miraculous is happening on the Fae realm. Henry, the JusticeBringer, fulfills one of his roles and finds what he has been seeking. We get to see Con finally lose control. He opens up about the loss of his mate! We learn more of the back story on Moreann the Others. Balladyn makes an appearance and transforms into something unexpected. After Rhi’s transformation in Fever, she resurfaces here, surprising and astounding everyone. It was another wild ride in the world of the Dark Kings. It’s one of those books that you can’t put down, but are so sorry when it’s over. I just want more!!!!

Could not put this book down. I didn't want to stop reading it and when I found out this was a series, I immediately looked for books 1-16 in our library collection/ordered them from a different library. The drama, the love, the action, the adventure and the conflict made my skin yearn for more and I was just about to pass out from over excitement when I finished the book. Our book club will absolutely love this book and I can not wait to see their expressions on their faces and hear their thoughts on this book and the discussions that will generate from that.

We will consider adding this title (and the rest) to our Sci-Fi collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.

4.5 stars--FLAME by Donna Grant is the seventeenth full-length instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult DARK KINGS paranormal/fantasy romance focusing on the Dragon Kings and the women they love. This is navy Dragon Cain, and Dark Fae Noreen’s story line. FLAME should not be read as a stand alone as the current story line continues to follow the ongoing series arc.

SOME BACKGROUND: The DARK KINGS is a spinoff from Donna Grant’s DARK WARRIOR series which in turn is a spin off from Donna’s DARK SWORD series- all set in the Highlands of Scotland, including the latest spin off about the Fae executioners known as the REAPERS. The Dragon Kings have a new enemy with the recent appearance of a group known as the Others, but their true identity and membership is currently unknown. As each Dragon King falls in love and finds his mate, King Constantine is pulled further away from the woman he loves, a woman he betrayed thousands of years earlier.

Told from several third person perspectives including Noreen and Cain FLAME focuses on the search for the truth, and the identity of the group known as the Others. An anonymous email to the Dreagon, the home of the Dragon Kings, finds Navy dragon Cain volunteering to ferret out the information the sender claims to know. Enter Dark Fae Noreen, a member of the Others, and the woman with whom Cain will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Cain and Noreen, and the potential fall-out as betrayal is inevitable when dealing with the enemy.

Navy dragon King Cain knows he has found his mate in the Dark Fae Noreen but trust doesn’t come easily for the other Kings. Having been betrayed in the past, and the obvious issue of Noreen’s identity, the Dragon Kings struggle to accept Noreen at face value including Rhi, a powerful Fae who sees more than most. While Rhi battles between head and heart, her Dragon King slowly begins to spiral out of control without the love of the woman he had chosen to destroy.

FLAME, like many of the previous storylines, recounts and chronicles the history of the Dragons, the Fae, the Druids and humankind; the betrayal leading to war between the dragons and human but also reveals the reason for the Others-their determination, their drive, their goals and their vengeance. We are introduced to their leader, their members and the powerful magic that controls the world but a magic that is slowly dissipating from other realms with prolonged and nefarious use.

FLAME is a story of betrayal, secrets, vengeance and lies. A tale of powerful magic and manipulation, broken minds and broken souls. The premise is intriguing and emotional; the romance is seductive and intense; the characters are spirited, animated and impassioned.

Flame by Donna Grant
Dark Kings #17

Cain, a dragon king, is sent to find out if the email sent to warn them is valid or a tricky trap. So, off he goes, meets the sender, sets a debrief in motion and that debrief ends up rather steamy from time to time. The information Dark Fae Noreen has is from her time with the Others, a group that has a plot in play, a plot that will endanger the dragons. Will her information help? Is she a spy? Does she have information that will help?

The book has steamy romance, dragon kings, druids, fae, good and evil, an intricate plot, plenty of characters to track, side stories and threads that it would be helpful to have read previous books to understand all that takes place. The ending settles who the mate of Dragon King Cain will be but doesn’t necessarily provide a HEA for all of the dragons…yet.

I have not read the entire series of this made up world that the dragon kings belong to but have read enough to know that I really do want the various groups to find a solution that will make the earth a safe and happy place for all. I would love to find out if the dragons that were sent away are still alive and where they are and if they will ever return. I would love to see the fae realm come together and unite. I would love to find out what happens in the end. Not sure when that will be but hope it will be soon.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Paperbacks for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Flame🔥

I’m going to start this review off by saying I’ve never read anything by Donna before and when I applied for this book, I had no idea it was a part of a series - let alone the 17th book in that particular series😱 I really just liked the cover...I know I judged the book by its cover😂

Suffice to say I plodded along and I really enjoyed the story, the characters and even the hint the Dragon Kings had of an accent. I’m thinking it’s going to be in my best interest to start at the beginning so I have a better grasp of the story and how this unravels but I really enjoyed the story otherwise and I look forward to starting at the beginning❣️

I received an advanced copy via Netgalley and thank the author and publisher for a chance to review😁

Cain has learned not to trust many people after living with the Dragon Kings for centuries. Noreen is a dark fae but she is horrified when she finds out her people's plans to destroy the dragon kings. Some lines were never meant to be crossed. The attraction between the couple is unexpected but strong and immediate. Will Cain be able to learn to trust? Can Noreen leave her people and everything she knows behind? A love that could cost the couple all they hold dear.

This is the latest book in the 'Dragon Kings , the Reapers , the Light and Dark Fae and Others series ………….. the series are now becoming more combined with greater results in the storyline .

Dark fae Noreen has seen something she should not ….. it is can be a death sentence if the Others find out .
She is determined to warn the Dragon Kings , even if her own life is forfeit , and sends an email with her information . Dragon King Cain is sent to find out exactly what Noreen knows and soon realises that she is his mate and possibly one of the enemy .
But things are never that straight forward in the World of the Dragon Kings and, Noreen and Cain face betrayal and challenges before they can work on their "happy ever after "

The storyline does progress a little in this book but we seem to be getting more and more characters introduced without furthering the final outcome against the "Others" .
Concentrating on the original Dragon Kings , the Reapers , the Light and Dark Fae and their battle against the Others would provide for a much more enjoyable progression in the plot line .
I am so , so glad to hear that Con's story is soon to be available as I want so much for him to finally have his own mate
(We know who that is after the leak online - but I won't reveal who here )
