I have to confess I came to this story already having fallen in love with Zakarrie Clarke's other books and I was delighted to discover the same seductive mix of humour and heart skilfully woven through this beautiful tale. It is laugh out loud hilarious in places, absolutely heart melting in others, raw and heart breaking with its honesty and openness and bursting with passion in every sense of the word. The descriptions are utterly to die for – seldom have I wanted to taste a subset or soak my ...more

Urgh.

I’m giving this book 4 stars having only read 50% of it. I’m sure the second half is just as good as the first, but I got fed up with the whole thing because as good as I am at reading English in a variety of its dialects, I admit that this book was about 1/3 gibberish to me. Beautifully written and told with such vivid feeling. Phin's descriptions are fantastic and his thoughts are better, they're hilarious. Jake is a great character, his internal dialogue with Jack is brilliant, so funny. I was rooting for them all the way...and what a fabulous ending. Loved it. ...more

While I'll be forever grateful to MLR press for publishing my stories, I also wanted to self-publish a few so that I might make them free or available on KU.
When my first novel was published, it became clear that it wasn’t as ‘ordinary’ as I’d thought. ‘Normal’ has never been my best thing, so I shouldn’t have been surprised, having written exactly as I think. With a brain beset by rainbows, unle
