Seriously awesome!!
16-year-old Jasmine must be known as Midge, the cabin boy if she is to stay safe. She also has to allow her father to hit her to keep her feminine features hidden.
An encounter with pirates changes every single aspect of her life.
Jasmine is thrust into a world where wielders can control bodies and minds and even the sea.
Danger comes from all sides and Jasmine has to wade through lies and half-truths and far worse if she is to save herself and those she loves.
A fantastic read!!

Life aboard a sailing ship is all young Midge has ever known. That and the fact she must masquerade as a boy because females are considered bad luck at sea, set the stage for her journey. However, she soon begins to discover there’s a lot she doesn’t know about who she is and why she’s a cabin boy on a trader.

At each turn young Midge, whose real name is Jasmine, uncovers more about who she really is and who the people in her life really are. No one is simply a ship’s cook, a father, a wielder.
Wielder's Prize will introduce you to Jasmine, aka Midge. She is a 16 year old girl trying to survive the life of a cabin boy. But wait, there's more! Oh, her dad also hits her in order to hide her womanly features. Ya know what irks me? Mulan didn't have to do that shit and no one knew she had boobs until she got stabbed. So I'm sure she could've been living the life of a pretty cabin boy just fine.

After meeting Midge, I guess she was okay. I'm still mad about the hitting but I will somehow get

In Wielder's Prize, author Elle Cardy has crafted a beautiful, moving, at times mysterious, and thoroughly original introduction to this YA fantasy trilogy. Now, I'm sure you'll notice I just mentioned "young adult," but this is one of those books that is perfectly suited to all adults, young and old and in between. I'm one of those in-between adults I will not hesitate in stating that I was enthralled from the first page. The main character, Midge, is the main source of mystery throughout the b ...more

If you love sea voyages and epic fantasy stories, this one's for you! Despite it being slow from time to time, I couldn't help but fall in love with these characters and the story. The writing style really helped with this: it is super engaging! ...more

It's been a while since I had the pleasure of reading a good swashbuckler.

A delightfully enchanting story of a girl, pretending to be a boy, on a tall ship full of men. Jasmine, aka, Midge has lived on the Wielder’s Prize for as long as she can remember. The cook, her father, keeps her beauty hidden by giving Jasmine a couple of knocks to the face, which is disturbing. When she’s shanghaied to another ship, she encounters a wielder. A wielder, in other terms is a magician, a wizard. While on th

Life aboard a ship is no place for a girl it is bad luck for the ship, so Midge's father to protect her raises her as a boy. There is a bit about family violence written very well but it weaves into the story as the life she is living is revealed and the discoveries she is about to make about herself.

It is very much a high seas adventure full of magic, discovery, and rolling hijinks. It kept me turning the pages. The characters are well written and you find yourself cheering and anxious for Mid

A Wonderful Surprise

Adventure. Battles. Magic. Dangers just below the surface. This book was such a breath of fresh air, and I loved going on a voyage with these characters. I read this in less than a day around lots of familial commitments, so it clearly had some great tension. Looking forward to installment #2!

This coming of age adventure story charmed me with its magical take on the pirate/swashbuckler genre. Enjoyed the word building and appreciated how the author handled the complex relationships Jasmine has with her father and another wielder named Finn.

This is the story of Jasmine, who is part of the crew of the Wielder’s Prize. As sailors tend to be suspicious of women aboard ships, Jasmine spends her life disguised as a boy. When one day the crew of another ship takes her and other members of the Prize’s crew hostage, she has to fight to hide her secret from these new people, especially Finn, who is a powerful magic user known as a wielder. He’s taken an interest in Jasmine because, as it turns out, she’s a wielder too, and an untrained one, ...more

I really enjoyed this book. It is an interesting fantasy world, mostly set on a ship with the world of seamen but a magic system that exists within the world. The different types of magic are really cool and the way people control their powers is very interesting. For a book, I picked up from Kindle Unlimited, the writing was really good. There was a fantasy style to the writing while still being very easy to understand. What I loved most about this story though was the building of the relations ...more

Wielder's Prize is the first book in The Wielder's Storm trilogy, and it was such an entertaining read! It had plenty of action, adventure, magic, danger, and even a little romance! The story kept me intrigue and turning the pages to find out what happens next. Elle Cardy created a rich world of engaging characters, an intricate storyline, and page-turning thrills. I'm excited to continue the journey in the next book! ...more

I have never been so entranced with a YA fantasy until Wielder's Prize. From the first page until the end, my attention never ceased. Midge is such a fascinating character, true to a sixteen/seventeen year old who's been raised on the sea, away from "normal" civilization. Other characters are quite well developed. Since most of the story is from Midge's point of view, it's hard to know who to trust. Everyone has secrets. Excellent world building. But sailing the high seas is basically the same i ...more

I thoroughly enjoyed WIELDER’S PRIZE. Typically in YA we have a female protagonist of around sixteen or seventeen, but Ms. Cardy chose to mask her heroine as a ship-boy, which adds a very intriguing dimension to the story. Midge/jasmine is very intricate and well rounded, despite her many disadvantages of ship life: forever beaten by her father, and apprenticed to study cooking under him, her real longing is to become a crewman on her beloved ship, the Wielder’s Prize, but sadly this may never h ...more

A thrilling tale of adventure set aboard the high seas, and in a magical universe which holds plenty of secrets to boot. Jasmine/Midge is an engaging and likeable hero (or heroine, I should say) with plenty of attitude, and I found myself rooting for her throughout as she comes up against some pretty formidable odds and foes - and it's hard to know who she can trust. The ships and sea almost feel like characters themselves, and I felt like I was right there on deck facing the dangers. I would ha ...more

This was such a fun story! I could not put it down and so stayed up way too late reading it. Among the things I liked best were (1) the conflicted, imperfect, but very likeable heroine and (2) one of the major spoilers, which was also one of the book’s most squee-worthy moments. There is a lot of potential in the worldbuilding, and I hope the sequel shows us more of that world and more of how magic works in it. I really enjoyed the sequences with magic in this novel and would like to understand ...more

I loved this tale of a girl who lives on the sea aboard a ship called the Wielder’s Prize. Jasmine has a rough life as a crewmate (note: a few scenes of physical abuse included, when she’s beaten). The magic threaded through this novel was fascinating, and the worldbuilding details were creative. Wielding—using someone’s magic—what a great term! The characters had real emotions and weren’t afraid to use them. Things were well-described.

In sum, this novel is a lively adventure, peopled with inte

A seafaring adventure story, a plot to devour, characters to enjoy ... a delight to read.

This is a treat to read ... I'm an adult - but it took me back to my teenage years ... when some truth in the story line could easily be read into the fantasy ... I could visualise each plot ... the high seas, the island, the skirmishes - both on the ship and on land, the romance edging in ... it's a delight and is really well written - a treat to read. I hope Elle Cardy will write a series ... I can see a

Midge is not your typical ship’s boy. For starters, she’s not a boy and her real name is Jasmine. As such she is very good at hiding her true nature. When she encounters a wielder (a magic user) she discovers her own abilities and draws the unwanted attention of the Guardians, wielders who ensure untrained wielders are taken care of. Jasmine must get control of her power before she hurts herself and others.

So begins an adventure on the seas, with twists and turns, drama and perhaps a little rom
