Caitlyn Le Fey is enjoying her first autumn in England, nut-picking in the forest, creating delicious treats in her grandmother's enchanted chocolate shop, and dreaming of cosy evenings with the handsome Lord James Fitzroy. But the peace is shattered when a mysterious woman claiming to be a witch arrives in the village. Some love her, others fear her... and one person is driven to murder. Soon Caitlyn finds herself drawn into a mystery with links to ancient witch trials and--with the help of her toothless vampire uncle and a few magical spells of her own--she sets out to do some sleuthing. But strange things are happening, and Caitlyn is worried and confused. Why isn't her kitten Nibs growing any larger? What does the new guest at Huntingdon Manor really want? And what is the jewel that seems to be exerting a sinister influence over her cousin Pomona? There are dark forces gathering in the village of Tillyhenge, and Caitlyn is about to discover that the savage tradition of witch-hunting is still very much alive...

Shame on me - I accidentally read the next book in this series before this one so I knew a few things were going to happen before they did. Never mind. It did not actually spoil the book for me.
In Double, Double, Toil and Truffle Caitlyn and James continue their attempts at romance and maybe make a little progress. The story of Pomona's black diamond begins but of course I already know what happens next! There is a lot of fun use of magic and the occasional entertaining result. The chickens are amusing. There is danger in the ice house and a very close shave.
A light hearted and amusing read with a very cute cat called Nibs who features on the cover. How can you not love a magical kitten who never grows up? A very easy read. Four stars.
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
I've been enjoying this series so far and was excited to start this sixth book in the series. For some reason I couldn't get as into it as normally. I think this was one of those instances where I just picked up a book in the wrong mood sadly.
In Double, Double, Toil and Truffle a new witch comes to the small village of Tillyhenge. It quickly becomes clear this person is not a real witch and it seems she is actually a fraud and a con artist. Some of the villagers are eager and enthusiastic about her powers, but others want nothing to do with the witch and want her gone. She "helps" some people and gets them to pay her large sums of money for her spells and such. Ofcourse she ends up dead one day and it quickly becomes apparent it's murder.
I liked how with the mystery it was clear from the start that it was murder, so there is no uncertainty about that fact due to how the person was murdered. I did manage to guess the murderer right somehow, even though I wasn't sure of the motivation. I didn't even pick up some of the clues that did point to that person's direction, so that was a bit weird and I was actually a bit surprised when my guess turned out to be right. The twists and turns in the mystery weren't as compelling as I am used to from this author or maybe that had something to do with my reading mood. I did like how the mystery got wrapped up.
There are a few things that don't really get resolved, but most of those will probably be resolved in later books I think. I like the overarching plot line this series has, but sadly it's very slow going. There are however some interesting plot points related to the overarching plot that line that get revealed in this book. Mostly paranormal related things that both expand the world building and add to the overarching plot line I think. And some new information about Caitlyn's mother comes to light, although it somehow felt a bit strange that she only found out now, as this source has been available since book 1. Which made it a bit unsatisfying that it took her 6 books to find this out.
One of the things that didn't really worked for me while reading this was how the tone of the book can be a tad silly at times? Normally I like that, but in my current reading mood it didn't fully work for me. Things that are supposed to be funny, just felt a bit too silly somehow. And then there are some of those weird scenes that something goes wrong just so Caitlyn can find a clue or get her in the right place, which makes it feel like mostly a coincidence how she finds out anything at all. I just would've liked a bit more agency here with Caitlyn actually going after facts or doing things because she wants to, instead of just being in the right place at the right time. Or her kitten runs off again and she goes scampering after him, not sure why she just doesn't wait for him to return as that's what cats usually do in my experience. It just felt a bit forced sometimes or too convenient and the kitten feels like a plot device half of the time to get Caitlyn somewhere. I also never fully warmed up to Nibs somehow. I do like Victor though, although I have no clue how he can keep vampirism a secret.
While I like Caitlyn, her behavior can also grate on my nerves at times. Like the date with James scenes, where she acts weird and doesn't bother to explain herself. It felt rude toward James how she acts at times. Or all her worries about her hips, I know it's realistic, but I just wish she would worry a bit less about it sometimes. There are also scenes where I like how she stands up for what she believes or when she tries to teach Evie to do right thing.
After how book 5 ended I was expecting things to finally warm up between James and Caitlyn, but sadly there isn't much in the way of that in this book. James has been away for a while and while he tries to further things, events and things keep popping up to prevent them for having a nice date, which was just a bit annoying. After 6 books I would like to finally get to see them a bit closer and see them deal with other struggles than the getting together struggle. It would be nice to have some more scenes where they are together and feel their romance as at times it's hard to really feel their romance now. It was quite refreshing to see a few small quarrels between these two as James is so polite at times. I also liked how they both admit they were wrong about something at the end and apologize.
As for the side characters. I enjoy reading about the Widow Mags and Caitlyn's aunt Bertha. There also was a plot line regarding Evie again and it felt realistic how things progressed. And I liked how the Evie plot line got resolved. There also is something going with Pomona and that doesn't get resolved in this book, but I think it ties in with the larger plot line. I didn't really like how she acts in this book.
The magic also seems a bit confusing sometimes with how what works. There were a few spells we hadn't heard of before and with each book there is more about magic that we learn, but there doesn't seem to be a big overarching way of how magic works, but it's still mostly fun to read about. And with each book you learn a bit more of what else if out there that's paranormal or relate dot magic.
To summarize: This is another fun installment in this series, but due to it not quite fitting with my current reading mood I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped. The mystery was decent, although the twist and turns in the mystery weren't as compelling this time. Or how Caitlyn got involved in it didn't feel as strong either. I did manage to predict the murderer by coincidence mostly. There are a few interesting side plot lines like the one with Evie and some progress in the overarching plot line. The overarching plot line is progressing really slowly, but I liked the few new bits we learned in this book. Caitlyn's behavior bothered me at times and some of her behavior or actions felt a bit forced for plot reasons. Or thing being too convenient or coincidental just to get her somewhere. Sadly the romance between her and James didn't really progress in this book like I had expected and things always seem to come between their romantic scenes. I would be happy for them to actually have a romantic scene without interruptions for a chance as it's hard to really feel their romance like this. While not my favorite book in this series it had some great parts too and I am looking forward to see how the series progresses.
Double, Double, Toil and Truffle by H.Y. Hanna is the 6th book in the Bewitched by Chocolate Mystery series. A fraudulent witch comes to Tillyhenge only to be murdered at the same time a witch hunter comes to the village. A great series where we see Caitlyn becoming more confidant in using her magic although not always with the outcomes she wants. There are more ups and downs with her relationship with Lord Fitzroy and Pomona is becoming nastier under the influence of the black diamond. An entertaining, enchanting mystery with Victor, the elderly vampire, providing some laughs along the way.
DOUBLE, DOUBLE, TOIL AND TRUFFLE by H.Y. Hanna Bewitched by Chocolate #6
There is a new witch in Tillyhenge and she is stirring up trouble. There are some townspeople that can’t wait to have her work magic for them and are willing to pay her for her services but others...not so much. The REAL witches in the village know she is more con artist than witch but not everybody feels the same. When she ends up dead of course Caitlyn will do some sleuthing to find out who the killer was.
In this book Lord Jame Fitzroy is home from some time away and is definitely interested in taking up with Caitlyn where they left off...so things are moving forward between the two and there is romance in the air. Nibs the kitten and Vicktor the vampire make appearances as to Widow Mags, Aunt Bertha and cousins Evie and Pomona. There is the murder, there are avid witch haters including a witch hunter, there are mean girls and talk of revenge, Ferdinand the bull makes an appearance and mention of Tara – the mother of Caitlyn that has not been seen since she gave birth to her daughter.
I am hoping that in the next book we will hear more about: * The romance between James and Caitlyn * Why Nibs is not growing * Where Caitlyn’s mother might be * What service the Widow Mags rendered to James’s father * How Evie and Caitlyn are doing with their sometimes on sometimes off magical abilities * Where the Hag stone might be and if it can really read the runes on the necklace Caitlyn wears * Whether or not the black diamond Pomona is wearing is having an impact on her personality * Who Thank Blackmort really is * And a few other things
This is probably the best story yet. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading the next book when it comes out.
Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.
This continues the trend of solid installments, but it started to veer in a darker direction. I’ll give the next book a try, but I avoid occult themes so depending on how that one goes I might leave the rest of this series unread.
3.5 stars There’s a new witch in town in the sixth installment in the Bewitched by Chocolate Mystery Series, DOUBLE, DOUBLE, TOIL AND TRUFFLE. The real witches in Tillyhenge immediately realize she is nothing more than a swindler, and someone decides to end her con once and for all. Villagers who have strong anti witch opinions make their voices heard, louder than ever, and James discovers some hard information about his family legacy.
This is another enjoyable entry in the charming Bewitched by Chocolate series but not my favorite of the bunch. Caitlyn’s magical abilities are becoming more defined and controlled, and she learns more tidbits about her birth mother. However, I am surprised at the source of this information and do not understand why it took so long to be revealed.
The romance between Caitlyn and James is still moving at a glacial pace. Caitlyn does not do herself any favors by acting, at times, flakey and immature. Why can’t she just tell James what is going on and why she is acting a certain way instead of sending James all the wrong signals? That said there is a wonderful scene between the two when he comes to her rescue, and I hope their relationship will truly blossom going forward. I also cannot wait to see how the revelations about James’ father influence their future.
I have never really warmed up to Pomona, but she is in a downward spiral here. I know what is happening to her is important for the series long story arc, but she is really unpleasant. I worry for her and hope this story arc is explored in the next book. Viktor is as lovable as ever, but I miss Widow Mags. She makes little more than a cameo in this tale. Evie is still feeling out her magical powers, much like a new colt learning to walk. Her “oops” this time around is comical, but there is a lesson to be learned in breaking her spell, leading to a satisfactory resolution to her problem.
The mystery seems to take a backseat to everything else going on, but it does serve as a catalyst exposing the hate some villagers feel and leads to great danger for Caitlyn. I did guess whodunit fairly early in the story, but I missed some of the clues pointing to his/her motive. It all fit together well in the end, neatly tying up this book’s murder, but there are plenty of loose ends to explore in future books.
DOUBLE, DOUBLE, TOIL AND TRUFFLE is a lot of fun, and I look forward to reading many more of Caitlyn’s adventures.
I received a copy of this title from the author and voluntarily shared my thoughts here.
I really like this series. That being said, I thought the main character, Caitlyn, came across as a flake in this book. Some of the personal interactions with James Fitzroy were slapstick, but not even slightly funny. The mystery was decent. That & the two possible story lines to come are what saved the book. I look forward to reading the next book! The best mystery in this story is Pomona. I believe that further information about her and Thane Blackmort will be in further books. She has changed quite a bit! The other interesting possible plot line is James and the possibility that his father was part of a secret society. What if it's true? What impact will this secret society have on his relationship with Caitlyn, if any? What was his father's obsession with the occult? I missed the Widow Mags this book. She didn't have as much of a presence in the book. There were a few scenes, where having her involved could have been a boost to the story. I will read the next book in the series, as they have been well done in the past. If Ms. Hana goes on to develop the possible story lines mentioned above, the next book should be a winner. I do recommend reading the series & doing so in order. The characters develop so much that the reader will miss out on some important information, if read out of order.
The murder was interesting in this entry in the series, and I definitely didn't guess who the murderer was (although there were a number of other villains). Caitlyn and james' relationship finally progressed here, which was also satisfactory, as were the revelations at the end of the book about Caitlyn's mother.
However, I'm really getting tired of the storyline featuring Pomona, and hope that it gets resolved soon.
Overall a satisfactory read, probably a C+, so three stars here.
I love this series, is there another witch in town? and a witch hunter? and what's wrong with some of the animals in the village? This one got me I usually figure out who the Murderer was in this books but I was wrong with this one. Can't wait til the next one.A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author. All of the above opinions are my own, as I voluntarily choose to reveiw.
A great mystery! I enjoy the characters in this series quite a bit, and the plots are always interesting. The mystery was enticing and kept me guessing. I will admit that I have been getting a bit frustrated with the almost romance of James and Caitlin, but it looks like we are finally in the right direction! This book also brought up some interesting questions that I hope get answered soon!
Bewitched by Chocolate #6 The murder was interesting. However, I'm really getting a bit tired of the characters and stories. While you can read all the Oxford Tearoom Mysteries in a row you'd better not do it with the Bewitched by Chocolate series. Space them out a bit, i would suggest. Overall a fun read.
Alright, now this is getting back on track! The murderer took me by surprise so that was good. In this book, we learn a lot more about Caitlin's past - enough that will hopefully be further explained in the next book. Unlike the last book, there wasn't much mention of Pomona's lover at all so that kinda sucked. However, Caitlin and James FINALLY go on a date so that kinda made up for it. Obviously, it didn't go as planned but nonetheless, they have finally moved forward in their relationship!
There were a few moments where Caitlin was annoyingly unaware. Frankly, sometimes she acts stupid. There was one scene where I was thinking, "Nooo, Caitlin noooo!" lol.
I did like that there was more focus on Nibs in this book although there weren't any answers. Hopefully all those questions will be answered soon. Overall, I'm enjoying this series! It took a bit of a dive two books ago but it has picked up again. Lately, the focus has been more on the supernatural mystery rather than the murder mystery, which is fine with me!
Bewitched by Chocolate #6 This is not the last book in this series, but I will not be continuing with this series.
I like… The mysteries are interesting and take turns I don't always expect.
I love… Nibs and Bran (though I don't think their characters have grown since the series began, and I'm not talking about physically).
I dislike… All the holes in the stories. Caitlin is way too wishy-washy and holds her tongue more often than she should. Pomona… Enough said. The narrator.
I hate… All the holes in the stories of this series. They irritate me beyond belief and rarely get resolved. The fact that each book doesn't end… It just stops and the next book doesn't take up where the previous one left off, it starts somewhere in the future and you don't get to find out what happened until Caitlin thinks about it, and even then you don't get the whole story, just bits and pieces that shed a minimal amount of light. This is one of the many reasons I will not be continuing this series when the next book comes out.
A new “witch” arrives in town, and the flamboyant woman is either worshipped or hated. When she leads a gathering at the stone circle on the hill between the chocolate shop where Caitlyn lives and Huntington Manor, where Lord Fitzroy lives, an angry mob comes to protest, and the woman begins to throw insults. A thunderstorm begins and lightning hits one of the protesters, and many in the town immediately blame the self-proclaimed witch. But when the woman is found drowned in a pool of water in the estate’s ice house, Caitlyn is eager to discover what happened, because some in the village are accusing her of casting a spell on Lord Fitzroy to make him fall in love with her. There are other puzzles she’s eager to solve: why won’t her kitten grow? And why does the elegant pendant cousin Pomona received from an eccentric billionaire give her a uneasy feeling? Lots of mystery. As in the last installment, I liked the mystery, but some of the things Caitlyn does make me wonder why she doesn’t have more common sense.
First I would like to say that I'm a big fan of H.Y Hanna and I read the other 5 books in the series and loved them. But I was really disappointed with this one... 🦥The beginning was too slow...nothing happens in the first 120 pages...it's just a recap of the characters and their personality...I understand that it's a series and that you need to introduce the setting to new readers but it was too much... 🍂it's too repetitive and in the end it's not funny: Evie making a mistake again? 🌺 the best part of the book was the last 50 pages. But I became frustrated because the action ends abruptly. There's some interesting development in the series but it's going way too slow and all rushed at the end. I hope I won't be disappointed by the rest of the series.
I enjoy mixing mystery with magic, and this book did a good job of that. The mystery itself was well done, and I enjoy the characters in these stories. James's old family friend and a townswoman who hates witches were vicious enough to make great antagonists. The only part of the book that I stumbled over was the chicken subplot (and that's all I can say without saying too much). But this was an enjoyable read.
It's really hard for me to read or watch tv when the characters are doing things that are absolutely embarrassing, and can't seem to stop. I do enjoy how much Caitlyn is growing as a person but I keep having to put the book down because a mini disaster is about to happen. I love how cute and quirky the series is, but it is one I have to read in small doses.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, but I had trouble getting into this book. Too much was going on & nothing seemed to click this time for me. None of the characters, Caitlyn, Pomona, & Evie seemed fleshed out in this book. I would have enjoyed reading more about Widow Mags & Bertha.
Every chocolate mystery book has been fantastic. I listened through Audible. The narrator was a great fit for this story. Can't wait for the next book, 7 due 2021. The characters and story line were great. Really love the fruit bat. Magic, death, mystery, love, and so much tasty chocolate. I'm gaining weight just reading about it. Worth reading. Fun, light, witch mystery adventure.
I have loved all of the books in this series. They draw you in. Lord James Fitzroy the handsome lord of the manner, Caitlin the shy american girl who comes back to England after finding out she was adopted by her late American mother. She wants to know who her real mother was...or is. Can't wait for more from this series of books.
Caitlyn is very engaging as a character. Overshadowed by her cousin Pamona, she probably doesn't realize how special she is. The lord of the manor does, though. Caitlyn and James will get together, I'm sure. Add in a little kitten as matchmaker, they are destined for each other. I just hope that she will save cousin Pomona before it is too late.
Still enjoying this series although Caitlyn's ongoing inability to have an up front and regular conversation with James was a bit annoying. Looking forward to finding out what's going on with Pomona and why Nibs is still so small and kitteny when the next book is available!
Maybe my mistake was reading the first six of this series in a few days. The first few were fun , if not slightly repetitive, characters doing the same thing in every book never learning from mistakes. Now , 6 books in & the bare minimum in the overall arc of the story. I'm calling it quits here.
This book was funny and exciting with lots of twists and surprises. Loved the part about the cow poo. Plot was interesting, flowed well and intense enough to keep the reader engaged. Characters likeable and endearingly eccentric.
I have been away from this series for awhile and I have to say I really enjoyed jumping back in. I enjoy the characters and the way that H.Y. Hanna mixes the enchanted world of magic into the English Countryside. Can't wait for Book 7 to be released.
I’ve binged my way through this series and was thrilled to see that this book made a giant leap forward in a number of areas. Please hurry with the next one!
Book 6 the storyline on this one is a little odd and the slow burn romance is the same as always.the black stone necklace is funny because I just read another series with that in (different author)
